3,500 home units coming, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu has said his administration is working on not less than 3,500 home units across the five divisions of the state, to address housing shortage.

He said the units would be ready for inauguration soon.

Speaking during the 50th year celebration of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI), Nigeria chapter, in Lagos yesterday, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, reiterated the determination of the government to make a huge impact in the housing sector, to address the state’s ever swelling demography caused by rural-urban drift and migration from neighbouring countries.

The governor said providing accommodation for the ever growing population had always been a challenge for successive governments in Lagos.

He noted that there were efforts towards the realisation of affordable and decent mass housing for Lagosians.

Former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr Tunde Lemo, who was the chairman of the occasion, said Nigeria’s population is projected to reach 400 million by 2050.

Recent figures, he noted, put Nigerian housing deficit at 28 million units as at January 2023.

The statistics, he said, is worrisome.

President FIABCI Africa, Near East Region, Adeniji Adele, said the federation had contributed towards the growth of the industry.

He said FIABCI members are located in all continents and represent 40 professions of the real estate industry.

  • Sanwo-Olu and the Film City project

Sanwo-Olu and the Film City project

    • By Tayo Ogunbiyi

Many industry watchers have continued to applaud the Lagos State Government for coming up with the audacious US$100 million Lagos Film City project. So much has been said about its potential to create jobs, support creativity and advertise our culture to the world.

But, Bola Bolawole, a former editor of “The Punch”, in a piece titled, ‘Why Sanwo-Olu Should Revisit Film City project’, chose to express misgivings on the venture.

In the piece, Bolawole expressed fears on the viability of the project, advising Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop it. The writer’s ignorance about the project was impeccably reflected in his referring to it as “another major scam in the offing”.

He was however honest enough to admit that his major source of information on the project was gotten from a chance meeting with a veteran frontline film maker, Ola Balogun, who interrupted his discussions with a friend at the Ikeja Mall during a business lunch.

It is, however, essential to make some clarifications that could further throw more light on some of the issues raised by the writer in the article.  The intention is to ensure that the public is not misinformed.

First, the writer’s fear over a supposed scam does not by any means arise. His allusion to the possibility of a scam certainly indicates his lack of understanding of the idea behind the Lagos Film City project. It, thus, needs to be stressed that the initiative is fundamentally based on the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) concept. The government will not finance the project from its balance sheet.

It is an arrangement between the state and private investors, hence, no public fund will be spent. The government’s partners of the project, Del-York, will solely be responsible for sourcing of funds and other issues relating to finances. Not a dime of public fund will be expended on it.

Second, Bolawole’s admission that a similar experience failed elsewhere is not a basis to conclude that the fate awaited the Lagos Film City project. Since coming on board in May 2019, Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated sufficient competency that has made Lagosians trust his judgment. He has successfully completed many landmark projects across various sectors. A few examples will suffice. The Lagos Blue Line project had been on for over a decade. Seeing that it is a people- oriented project capable of addressing the state’s traffic challenge, the governor promised to complete it before the end of his first tenure in office.

He kept his word. Today, the Blue Line is a testament to the possibilities of “A Greater Lagos”. In fact, the Red Line is slated for commissioning before the end of the year.

Sanwo-Olu also promised to ensure the completion of the multi-million dollar Lekki Deep Sea Port. On this too, he kept to his word. He also pledged to complete the Lagos Rice Mill in Imota, Ikorodu, which has since been completed and commissioned.

The governor equally swore, upon his inauguration in 2019, to complete all ongoing housing schemes. By the time he was rounding off his first tenure in office, his administration had completed over 20 housing schemes.

The whole essence of recounting the governor’s string of successes is to show that Sanwo-Olu is not one to embark on wasteful expenditures.

He is a conscientious planner who meticulously goes through the minutest details of programmes and projects before spending public funds on them. This, no doubt, explains why the state is yet to experience any case of a failed project under his leadership. Sanwo-Olu has eyes for details. Nothing, no matter how seeming insignificant, escapes his scrutiny.

Now, let’s go back to the Film City. The initiative isn’t something that just happened on the impulse. It is part of the administration’s holistic and carefully thought-out plan to transform the state’s tourism and entertainment industry.

Since his first term in office, Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated a strong resolve to reposition the state’s tourism and entertainment industry. This is based on his conviction that the sector, if properly structured, has huge potential for wealth and job creation.

This, of course, is a stark reality. In America, for instance, the entertainment industry is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, creating jobs for thousands of young creative minds.  Lagos is the entertainment capital of the country; developing the sector not only holds a brighter prospect for Lagos, but the country at large.

An integral part of the government’s plan to further develop the sector is the Lagos State Creative Industry Initiative (LACI), a partnership between the government and renowned film making academies. Through collaboration with organisations, such as EbonyLife Creative Academy, Del-York Academy and Ogidi Studio, AMAA, among others, new leaders and stars have emerged in the creative industry.

Till date, the partnership has produced over 6000 graduands with the likes of Genoveva Umeh, Moshood Fattah, Desmond Bryce, Obinna James, Promise Egwu, Peter Joshua and Hannah Sampson, among others, becoming newest super stars in the sector.

After the pandemic, the government supported the sector with a N1 billion naira interest free grant, which was accessed by several film producers. The essence is to ensure that the sector remains vibrant and productive.

Prior to the post-COVID-19 grant, the government had disbursed N200 million as loans to 37 indigenous filmmakers. This is in addition to the completion of the J.K Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture, Onikan, Lagos as well as the Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos. The latter, a state-of-the-art amphitheatre like other theatres built by the government, have been concessioned to Lufodo Production Limited, owned by veteran actress Joke Silva, for effective management.   Cheerfully, the modest efforts of the government are beginning to pay off. A recent PwC report shows that Nigeria’s film industry contributed 2.3% ($660 million (N239 billion)) to the GDP in 2021.

Lagos is not only the commercial nerve of Africa, it is the birthplace of Nollywood and the location of a majority of the cinemas in Nigeria. Lagos has also been described as the cultural, financial, and entertainment capital of Africa, and is a significant influence on commerce, entertainment, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, and fashion.

In New York, the movie industry creates 185,000 jobs annually, $18.1b in wages and $81.6b in total economic output. Thus, the Lagos Film City project is part of the all-inclusive efforts of the government to further enhance the growth of the industry.

The proposed Film City will be a total hub for movie production; it’s not just about studios. It is a testament to the government’s commitment to nurturing the arts and supporting the dreams of aspiring filmmakers, actors, and technicians. It will create numerous job opportunities, stimulate economic growth and attract investments. It will be a hub for film production, post-production, visual effects, and all the ancillary services that support the film-making process.

It is envisioned to be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, sound stages, editing suites, production offices, and everything necessary to bring the magic of the silver screen to life. It is designed to be a one-stop-hub for movie production.

    Sanwo-Olu, Oyebanji open Oyingbo Bridge

Ekiti state governor Abiodun Oyebanji has described Lagos as appealing to other states because ‘everybody is interested in the Lagos miracle.’

He spoke when he joined Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to open the new Oyingbo Bridge.

The 717km long bridge is part of the five essential infrastructure rail level crossing of the Red Rail Line.

According to him, the projects speak for what is possible when there is a listening leader in charge.

He said: “Lagos has become a model for infrastructure leadership and Ekiti has a lot to learn from Lagos. Everybody is interested in the Lagos miracle, especially because Governor Sanwo-Olu is a mentor to many of us. I will not be tired of returning to commission more projects.

“I urge Lagosians to treasure this path so they can continue to benefit from it. They must guard jealously everything the progressive government has done because it is a testament to the continued progressive administration.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the government is investing so much in transportation infrastructure to support commerce and ease movement, ‘especially considering the importance of Oyingbo as a major link between the mainland and the Island’.

He added: “With these overpass bridges, we are providing a permanent solution to the avoidable fatal accidents often recorded at railway crossings. The siting of these infrastructures in this area is strategic and intentional to achieve a seamless integrated intermodal transport system for the people.

“As the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge starts, this bridge will provide a lot of relief to motorists. I, therefore, appeal to our motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic and law enforcement officers in order to minimize the inconvenience that will be experienced during the period of rehabilitation.”

Test running of the red rail line will be in Q1 2024.

Sanwo-Olu signs executive order establishing Lagos International Financial Centre Council

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed an Executive Order establishing the Lagos International Financial Centre (LIFC) Council.

This, the Governor said, is in furtherance of Lagos’ position Lagos as Africa’s premier financial centre.

Sanwo-Olu said the LIFC Council is being propelled in partnership with EnterpriseNGR, an advocacy group that promotes the growth and development of Nigeria’s Financial and Professional Services (FPS) sector as a catalyst for economic development.

Lagos State and EnterpriseNGR will make history as the first African participants invited to join the Lord Mayor’s Show’s 805th procession in London.

The Governor, who will chair the Council, said participating in the Lord Mayor’s Show is to showcase the investment potential of Lagos and to elevate the state as a global investment destination.

He noted that LIFC Council’s objective, established with Executive Order 3, would help to align strategic partnerships that contribute to the economic prosperity of Lagos and Nigeria, by establishing Africa’s premier International Financial Centre in Lagos, in line with the economic recovery plans of the Federal Government.

Chairman of EnterpriseNGR, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, who is co-chair of the Council added: ‘‘EnterpriseNGR stands as a catalyst for transformative change in Nigeria’s Financial and Professional Services sector. Our vision extends beyond advocacy; it’s a commitment to incentivise investments that go beyond financial gains.

Chief Executive Officer of EnterpriseNGR Ms. Obi Ibekwe, said: “EnterpriseNGR’s participation in this historic delegation to the Lord Mayor’s Show underscores the critical role we play in driving transformative change within Nigeria’s Financial and Professional Services sector.

“We are not just advocating for growth; we are actively working to create a dynamic, interconnected and thriving FPS sector. Sanwo-Olu, royalties, grace Eti-Osa monarch’s 30th coronation anniversary

Ajiran town in Eti-Osa Local Government was agog Monday, as its monarch, Oba Tijani Adetunji Akinloye, Sateru II, the Ojomu of Ajiran land celebrated three decades on the throne.

The event, which held at the centre of the town, was climax of weeklong activities, and had frontline traditional rulers in Lagos and environs, the Lagos State governor, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bolaji Kayode Roberts, and notable dignitaries, including billionaire businessman, Rasak Okoya and Lagos APC chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi in attendance.

Speaking through his representative, Governor Sanwo-Olu said Oba Akinloye’s reign has brought a lot of development to the town, which has also rubbed off on adjoining communities.

“The Awori obas look up to you, not just as a leader but as a visionary leader. You will not drop from that enviable position God has placed you; the legacy you’re laying will not be destroyed. God will grant you more long life and good health,” the governor prayed.

Responding, Oba Akinloye thanked all that graced the occasion. He also prayed long life and good health for everyone, and especially the obas and dignitaries who found time even on a busy Monday to grace the occasion.

Fadipe Olajide, who described himself as son of the soil said Akinloye’s impact on the community since ascending the throne has been tremendous in terms of development, education access roads, hospitals and other necessary living amenities.

Landlords beg Sanwo-Olu, LCDA chair to stop ‘illegal’ demolition

The landlords of Agric and Owutu in Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the council chairman to stop the proposed demolition of their buildings  following the issuance of a seven-day notice to vacate same.

At a protest at the Governor’s Office, Alausa, the protesters alleged that their houses were marked for another round of demolition, five years after the houses were partly demolished.

The landlords’ coordinator, Mr. Mustapha Abdulganiu, explained that the Akinwunmi Ambode- led administration met with them in 2018, showing the road construction plans, which involved the demolition of parts of their houses, with the promise of compensation but nothing was given to them.

He said they were surprised that the Sanwo-Olu administration wants to, again, demolish their re-erected buildings after the near-completion of the Agric-Isawo Road.

He begged the government to address the issue swiftly by honouring the agreement they had in 2018.

Abdulganiu claimed that some people were using the road construction, misleading the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Ministry of Works and Ministry of Physical Planning, to render them homeless.

In a similar protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly last Tuesday, the House promised that no building would be brought down without due diligence and adequate compensation.

Abdulganiu, who was in a wheel chair, alleged that the officials of the ministry had been compromised by land grabbers,  and LAMATA to redesign the road that was almost completed.

They residents made similar allegations when they took their protest to the Chairman of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area, Mr. Kazeem Sulaimon.

They alleged that NURTW, Market Women Association and land grabbers in the local government connived some the officials of the ministry, who helped to re-design the road.

The landlords said they had reconstructed their houses into two-storey buildings after the state government partly demolished them five years ago.

On the allegation of the landlords, Sulaimon said it might be true. He said: “Some people actually came to me, claiming to be the original owners of the land and that they had secured a court judgment in their favour. They said they wanted to partner  the Local Council to construct a shopping mall on the said land. I declined their request because I don’t want troubles. I will never dabble into land matters. It could be the same people who are behind this, only God knows.’’

Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, assured the Owutu/Agric landlords that the state would not demolish any building without due diligence or adequate compensation.

Obasa, who was represented by Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry Constituency 2) and about 10 members, said neither would the state hide under the guise of road construction or any other developmental projects to rob residents of their legitimate properties. He assured them that justice would be done.

He thanked the residents for being law abiding and pledged that the House, as representative of the people, would look into their case.

Addressing the lawmakers on the premises of the Assembly, Abdulganiu appealed to them to assist them to secure the  reconstructed structures from being demolished by some men hiding under the state government to commit crimes.

He said: “We are taken by surprise to witness another strange red marks for demolition on our buildings again, when it is obvious that the setbacks and stipulated highway distance are observed and maintained in respect of the road construction exercise.

“We find it absurd, inconceivable and inconvincible that after the road construction, some agents of the Lagos State Government working on the road had earlier demolished part of houses around the area five years ago, with property owners not compensated, despite promises, steps are again being taken to unjustifiably make people homeless with another round of demolition.

“We are surprised that, after many had managed to renovate the remains of their partly demolished structures, in line with the authorised setbacks, another set of construction workers suddenly surfaced without notice, to hide under the Lagos State Government to commit heinous crime against innocent citizens.

“Our findings revealed that the intended demolition is being surreptitiously planned by some unscrupulous but influential men and women within the Ikorodu West LCDA, including leaders of transport unions who are conniving with the construction company to rob the landlords of their properties that were not ordinarily affected by the construction work.”
