    • ‘Nigeria has lost foremost corporate lawyer’

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and erstwhile Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Chief Bayo Ojo, have paid glowing tributes to the late corporate lawyer and frontline philanthropist, Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the Lagos governor condoled with the Ogunbanjo family and Erunwon community in Ijebu rae of Ogun State on the passing of the industrialist.

“The legacies of Chief Chris Ogunbanjo, who died on Saturday a few months before his 100th birthday, cannot be forgotten because of the positive impacts he made during his lifetime and his extraordinary life of service to humanity, his community and the nation.

“I commiserate with his family members, friends, associates, legal practitioners in Nigeria and the people of Eruwon in Ijebu, Ogun State, on the death of the elder statesman.

“I pray for the repose of the soul of the late Chief Chris Ogunbanjo and that God grants the deceased family and loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Obasanjo described the late Ogunbanjo as an exceptional legal luminary whose vacuum would be difficult to fill.

Chris Ogunbanjo died on October 7 at the age of 99.

In a statement yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, ex-President Obasanjo said: “On behalf of my family and on my own behalf, wish to commiserate with the entire members of the Ogunbanjo family, the Awujale of Akile Ijebu, Oba Dr. Sikiru Adetona, and the entire people of Ijebu land and, by extension, of Ogun State, on the transition of Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo, who was one of the prominent and great sons of Africa.

“He was a successful captain of industry, philanthropist and exceptionally excellent legal luminary who I can safely call an outstanding Nigerian corporate lawyer.

“Only a few days ago, I remember him at a discussion and the only name that was coming to memory was ‘the corporate lawyer’, ‘the corporate lawyer’. Yes, he was distinguished and truly deserving of that appellation…

“In all respects, he was a Titan and a brilliant attorney: a good man, an inspiring leader and a remarkable statesman and nationalist whose intellect, integrity, hard work and vision impacted significantly on the legal profession. It is to the eternal credit of the late Chief (Ogunbanjo) that he strove to carve a niche for himself in several spheres.”

In his statement, Chief Ojo (SAN) described Chief Ogunbanjo’s death as a huge loss.

The statement reads: “Indeed, Baba Ogunbanjo was a foundation of knowledge. He knew the law in its purest form. A distinct repository of knowledge and blend of condor, intelligence and humanity throughout his lifetime, he was a cerebral whose advocacy was top notch.

“He was a ‘Life Force’ and hugely sought-after lawyer and many private individuals and corporate organisations within and outside Nigeria relied on his legal advice and counsel and he will be remembered not only for his sharp intellect, but also for his impeccable appearance.”

Sanwo-Olu, U.S. Consulate, others pledge support for AFRIFF 2023

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has announced the 2023 programme for its 12th edition.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who hosted a briefing to announce the programme at the State House in Marina, pledged support for the festival and creative industry.

He was joined by U.S. Consul General, Mr. Will Stevens, as well as industry veterans, movie producers, and Nollywood stars.

This year’s festival, with the theme ‘Indigenous 2.0 Global’, holds between November 5 and 11 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos.

AFRIFF said it is expanding its focus on indigenous content and the need for authenticity as the most important ingredient to connect to a global audience.

Founder of AFRIFF, Chioma Ude, stressed that the festival has assumed even more importance as creatives now have the potential to earn more.

But they need to upskill to become global players, she noted.

Ude said so far, AFRIFF has received over a thousand great film submissions since it opened entries.

She said: “If you don’t think global, you won’t go global.

“This edition of the festival stands out due to the heavy emphasis on our films leaving a mark on the global stage.

“In line with AFRIFF’s ethos of capacity building, creatives would be exposed to a series of trainings cutting across filmmaking, makeup, art designing and more.

“We need to understand international policies and laws to be able to sell our indigenous contents globally.

“Whether you’re a make-up artiste, filmmaker or designer, you’re going to be earning in dollars, and invariably such earnings will boost our economy too.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the $100 million African Film City project in Epe, Lagos State, which groundbreaking he said would begin in the coming weeks.

The goal, he said, is to further empower Nigeria’s creative talents, 5000 of whom he said had already been trained.

“We are doubling our financial and training support.

“This means more opportunities for skill development in modern filmmaking and increased grants for short stories. Elevating the creative industry is our goal,” the governor said.

He pledged his support to AFRIFF, adding: “We commit resources to anything that will boost creative minds.

“This 12th edition of AFRIFF will be one of the biggest and boldest.

“There is no better moment than now to work together to put forward our narratives that Africa is ready, Nigeria is ready, Lagos is ready.

“The creative industry knows no boundary and we’re happy to be part of this.”

Stevens also pledged the American Consulate’s continued support.

“It’s been amazing supporting AFRIFF for nine years in a row,” he said.

The diplomat underscored the powerful role movies can play in shaping narratives and how Nigeria’s entertainment is fast gaining global acceptance.

“The American brand was built on what is seen in movies, and viewers wanted to live the dream.

“Now it’s Nigeria’s time,” he said.

Aisha Umar-Mumuni, the Chief Digital Officer of MTN, AFRIFF’s partner and sponsor, said her company has “vested” interest in the Festival.

Umar-Mumuni added: “Digital entertainment has become an integral part of our day to day lives.

“The growth in the use of smartphones and digital services has compelled the need to provide digital solutions and partner with organisations like AFRIFF to distribute indigenous African content, making them accessible regardless of geographical locations.

“We are well-positioned to lead the charge as the biggest ICT operator in Africa, committed to using technology to promote the continent on the global stage.”

AFRIFF is a rich gathering of original storytellers and audiences seeking new voices in Cinema and fresh filmmaking perspectives.

The annual programme showcases emerging trends in storytelling and cinematic expression from established and new talents from Africa and the diaspora.

It consistently delivers a rich programme to foster invaluable exchanges of ideas, production connections, and business relationships.

It creates an exciting hub for entertainment industry professionals to make rewarding connections and has gradually gained a reputation as the most vibrant festival experience in Africa.

Since 2010, hundreds of films launched at the festival have gone on to gain critical acclaim and reach new audiences worldwide.

Last year, for the 11th edition, the festival played host to some of the most exciting talents and experts who contributed to industry sessions and keynote conversations around the theme: Indigenous for Global.

With arguably one of the best programmes it has ever had, AFRIFF 2022 delivered an excellent experience.

“The programme gave our audience the chance to connect with Hollywood Director Ryan Coogler, as well as producers, casting directors, talent managers and top executives from Amazon Prime Video, Paramount, Showmax, the Red Sea Fund and other strategic partners,” the organisers said.

Sanwo-Olu to Edu: Don’t allow bureaucracy to undermine President’s welfare initiatives

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged those entrusted with the responsibility to implement the social safety net programme of the Federal Government to undertake the assignment in a way that must reflect the sincerity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to protect vulnerable families and households from the impact of the current economic shocks shaking the country.

Sanwo-Olu said the social security programme was a well-thought-out initiative of the President to engender inclusive governance by providing means of livelihood for people living below the poverty line. The Governor said bureaucracy must not come in the way of the intervention, stressing that the target population must be identified and get the benefits of the intervention.

This was Sanwo-Olu’s remark when he received the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, and management team of the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) in a courtesy visit yesterday at the State House, Marina.

Edu’s visit to the Governor followed the verification exercise carried out by the ministry to validate Lagos data in the National Social Register.

The verification is part of the conditions to be fulfilled before the Federal Government commences its conditional cash transfer programme aimed at providing succor to Nigerians affected by humanitarian crises and multi-dimensional poverty.

Sanwo-Olu said the Ministry remained vital to the success of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, reiterating Lagos State Government’s readiness to work in synergy with the Federal Government’s steering committee to effectively implement the social safety net programme in the State.

The Governor pointed out that Lagos had generated verifiable data that would be useful in rolling out the intervention, noting that the State had captured almost three million residents living below the poverty line in almost one million households.

He said: “Data is key to effectively implementing the President’s social safety net programme. We have generated a transparent list that both teams can look into. We have captured close to a million households, which gave us almost three million people. We can work out a plan to compare the data we have and create a unified data structure that will make the implementation of the intervention possible and impactful.

Sanwo-Olu gave a commitment that the State’s Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget would work with the Federal Government’s steering committee on data, while the Ministries of Wealth Creation, Women Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation would support the effort with actions in the area of reimbursement.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated the commitment of his administration to promote high standard environmental health practices.

He said this is in line with its priority on environment and health, according to the second pillar of its THEMES Agenda.

The governor spoke at the World Environmental Health Day 2023, organised by the Directorate of Environmental/Occupational, Health and Safety, Ministry of Health.

The event with the theme: ‘Standing up to protect everyone’s health each and everyday’, was held at the Directorate Conference Hall, Alausa, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the THEMES agenda would be pursued through government’s organs covering environmental monitoring, food safety policies, robust climate mitigation and adaptation plan, including One Health Initiatives.

He said the government was serious about the agenda because environmental pollutant could cause health problems such as respiratory diseases, heart diseases and cancer.

“According to World Health Organisation (2016), global environmental issues account for more than 12.6 million deaths each year.

“Among the challenges we face are climate changes, deforestation, pollution and biodiversity loss” he said.

He listed a few of the environment challenges posing threat to include pollution through obnoxious chemicals, food safety, poor sanitation and traffic congestion.

Lagos State Public Procurement Agency has held a roundtable discussion with stakeholders in the hospital sector.

He urged the medical directors to constitute functional procurement planning committees comprising heads of departments and units in their facilities.

According to him, needs assessment is crucial in procurement.

Onafowote said in recognition of the peculiarities of the operating environment of the health facilities where health emergencies involving human lives occurred frequently, the Lagos State Public Procurement Law had provision for emergency procurement to take care of such emergency situation.

He said public procurement law did not permit a situation where procurements made by health facilities were treated as emergency; adding that the health facilities must have their procurement plans and adhere to such plans “as much as this is practically possible.”

He said the agency had secured the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to onboard the procurement process of the 28 general hospitals and LASUTH on the e-procurement platform of the state, adding that the integration of the procurement process of the health facilities on the e-procurement platform would facilitate transparency, accountability and enhance the ease of doing business with the health facilities.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr. Ademuyiwa Eniayewun, enjoined the medical directors to feel free to consult with the director general of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency and director of procurement in the commission, to resolve public procurement issues.

    Sanwo-Olu opens Ogombo High School

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday opened the Ogombo Senior High School, Ajah, with a promise to remain committed to promoting quality education.

The school was built from the scratch by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), chaired by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu noted that COWLSO, since its resuscitation by the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, when she was wife of the governor, has continued to play a vital and complementary role to the government’s efforts, especially in achieving its THEMES+ Agenda in Education and Technology.

He said: “These have been especially evident through its several initiatives that directly impact the lives of children, women, the elderly, youth, physically-challenged and the less-privileged. These initiatives, which cut across various sectors, have contributed to the growth and development of Lagos State in the last two decades.

“The commissioning of this purpose-built 15-classroom block is another success story in the efforts of our administration to provide educational infrastructure for effective learning and teaching in a conducive  environment. It is important to note that this block of classrooms, comprising three floors, was designed with adequate provision for the needs of physically-challenged pupils. This is in compliance with global standards and our T.H.E.M.E.S+ policy thrust of not leaving anyone behind.”

Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said the project was done in partnership with Lagos State Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS).

She said: “This journey started in December 2021, when COWLSO realised that Ogombo community was in dire need of a secondary school. Students had to trek for over an hour to neighbouring communities to access secondary education.

“This led to the swift intervention of COWLSO in embarking on this building project, which is in line with the founding objectives of the committee, to impact lives positively and contribute immensely to the political and socio-economic development of Lagos State.

“Standing before us today is a fully equipped three-floor educational structure, comprising 15 ultra-modern classrooms, 30 toilets, libraries, laboratories, ICT Center, offices for teaching and management staff, as well as a well-equipped sick bay.

“There are also staircases and a ramp to ease movement for physically-challenged persons. To the Glory of God Almighty, this magnificent edifice was completed in November 2022.”

Lagos will open Yaba, Ikeja along vehicular bridges October, says Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has said the Yaba and Ikeja Along bridges would be opened to vehicular movement in October.

Sanwo-Olu spoke on Wednesday, September 27, when he inspected the infrastructure component of the Red Rail Line.

According to the governor, more bridges would be built in conjunction with the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

While the red rail line has eight major stations – Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Mushin, Yaba, Ebute Metta and Iddo/Oyingbo, the trains would use the tracks built by the federal government.

It will take a minimum of 1,000 passengers per ride.

The governor reiterated that government is on track to deliver the project before the end of the year.

He also hinted that Phase 2 of the Blue Line has been awarded, and will hopefully be completed faster than the first phase.

He said: “We have seen the state of infrastructure on our Red Rail Line corridor, and we are impressed. We are also on track to deliver the project before year end.

“However, there is still work to be done, especially clearing of illegal structures around the tracks and general clean up of the axis. While some of the bridges are completed, some are about 98 per cent ready, and we will start opening them to vehicular movement from October before the train starts work officially.

“We will also step up security enforcement to prevent intruders from accessing the railway corridor. We have spoken to traders and other illegal occupants to vacate because we have to ensure security of passengers.

“Change is an attitude and a way of life; people cannot remain on the tracks. We might also consider erecting concrete barricades as a security measure.

“We also want passengers to have a total lifestyle experience within the train stations, that is why they are large enough to accommodate a variety of ventures.

“The Ikeja station is the largest in Africa and even Europe because we want it to be a hub of mega businesses. Passengers can have a total lifestyle experience connecting the train ride to the BRT ride as the red line is also accessible with the cowry card.”

Sanwo-Olu also urged passengers taking the Blue Line to exercise patience while boarding.

He appealed to them to be orderly and allow passengers to disembark before boarding as that is the normal procedure.
