  • Sanwo-Olu promises women SSG, exco positions

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has promised to appoint a woman as Secretary to the State Government (SSG) if elected.

He also promised to appoint women into key executive council (exco) positions such as Finance and Budget Planning.

Sanwo-Olu said women had proved their worth as good managers of public treasury. He referred to former Ministers of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mrs Kemi Adeosun who, according to him, discharged their responsibilities very well.

The APC governorship candidate spoke yesterday in Lagos at an interactive session organised by the women’s wing of the party.  The theme of the discussion was: “Enabling, Empowering and Promoting Women: Our Pact”.

He said APC doesn’t discriminate against women, adding that the party made it possible for the likes of Mrs Sarah Sosan, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and Dr Ranti Adebule to become deputy governor at one time or the other.

“When I was in government, I remembered 65 per cent of the permanent secretaries were women.

“Our administration will be liberal to women. We will assign women to critical ministries such as Finance and Budget. We will surprise you. I can’t give the number of female commissioners we will appoint. If you empower women, you have empowered the nation. Where women’s rights are not guaranteed, there can be no human rights,” Sanwo-Olu said.

His running mate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the Sanwo-Olu administration would pursue vigorously the completion of light rail project, “although it is very expensive.”

He said the Lagos-Badagry road would be completed, blaming the delay on the recession that set in soon after the assumption of office by the present administration.

  • We ‘ll complete Lagos-Badagry expressway, says Hamzat

Concerned with the seeming slowpace at which some critical road projects in Lagos is moving, coupled with the attendant consequences in movement of people and goods, Lagos State goverorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to improve on the quality of living standards in the state if elected in this year’s general elections.

Echoing the commitment of his principal and his passion to ensure the completion of ongoing critical road projects that included the Lagos Badagry Expressway, Sanwo-Olu’s Running mate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, while fielding questions from respondents on Radio programme last week, assured Lagosians of their commitment to early completion of the expressway.

According to Hamzat, both Badagry and Lekki-Epe expressways are so critical to the economy of Lagos, that no effort must be spared to ensure their early completion. To this end, issue of the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge may be delayed.

“Specifically, the ongoing 60-kilometre Lagos-Badagry Expressway project being executed by the state government must be completed as early as possible. The project has two major intermodal transport schemes namely; the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and the Light Rail Mass Transit with their accompanying infrastructure- 10 lanes superhighway taking off from Eric Moore interchange and traverses westward through Orile Iganmu, Alaba Oro, Mile 2, Festac, Agboju, Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko, Iyana Era, Ijanikin, Agbara, Ibereko and terminated at Badagry.

“The goal is to connect Lagos with the ECOWAS countries. The initiative would no doubt, enhance the  commercial and other business activities between the affected neighbouring countries”. Hamzat said.

Besides, he acknowledged the importance of Lekki-Epe Expressway, which he said would be expanded and reconstructed, especially, from where it stopped now to the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) in Akodo.

“Just like the Badagry Expressway, Lekki-Epe axis is also critical, in view of the ongoing enormous development taking place in the axis, there is need to review the issue of Fourth Mainland Bridge. For now, the project must be put in abeyance, because technical reports from experts revealed that the volume of traffic along the axis cannot cope with additional ones that the 4th Mainland bridge will engender.

“What we intend to do, if we form government, is to begin the construction of Coastal Roads from Ajah axis to Ibeju-Lekki, and possibly compete the abandoned portion of the Expressway from Ibeju to Epe; linking it to Ijebu-Ode, where trucks and other articulated vehicles coming to LFTZ would avoid Ijebu-Ode-Itoikin road”, said the APC Deputy Governor candidate, who assured that their government would massively invest to boost the already existing facilities as well as initiating new ones across the state.

Hamzat, a former Lagos Commissioner for Science and Technology, as well as Works and Infrastructure, said his principal, Sanwo-Olu and himself were not novice to government, having being in the system for quite a while.

On the challenges of the ever growing population of Lagos, which its agreed that is currently over 20 million, with a projected figure of close to 30 million in the next decade, Hamzat emphasised the need to be proactive before the time comes.

“Lagos population is humongous,  despite her being the smallest State in Nigeria with a land area of 3, 577 square kilometres. This translates that it occupies a paltry 0.4 per cent of total land area of Nigeria, which is 923,768 square kilometres”, he said, adding that Lagos has more than two million vehicles on her roads, out of about 12 million vehicles on the Nigerian roads as a whole.

Drawing from statistical figures obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Hamzat disclosed that about 260, 000 people come into the state daily, while only about 20-25 percent of this figure return to their original places of migration. This huge migration influx to the city, he noted, is overstretching the existing infrastructure and facilities, thereby making for an urgent need to be innovative in providing infrastructure in the state.

He assured that their plan will be to expand and improve on existing infrastructure project. ‘Government is a continuum and we will continue with existing projects to the benefit of Lagos. Our focus remains ‘Towards a Greater Lagos: A Collective Effort’, he added.

To this end, Lagos APC deputy governorship candidate said their government would work with an acronym: ‘THEME.’ “Our Promise to Lagosians is ‘THEME Lagos.” The pillar includes traffic management and transportation; health and environment; education and technology; making Lagos a 21st Century economy; entertainment and tourism.

He stated that efforts will also be geared up towards fixing various inner roads across the state. To achieve this, Hamzat revealed that the three Asphalt plants in the state will be turned around and made ready to put people to work in order to make the roads motorable throughout the year.

The meeting, according to a statement by the Lagos State APC Woman Leader, Mrs Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, would further deepen the country’s democracy and situate it well as a venture for developing the society rather than just being played as a vote-seeking promotion of selfishness and corruption among politicians.

The lawmaker said it would situate them with the state’s developmental needs.

According tom her, the career women are important to the state as the drivers of the economic and social fabrics of the Southwest.

Its spokesman Bolaji Lawal said members have been advised to draw from various spheres of influence across the socio-economic spectrum of the state to ensure that the state’s progressive legacy of development is preserved with the election of Sanwo-Olu.

Lawal said the group took the decision to work for Sanwo-Olu after a careful study of the political environment and scrutiny of the profile and agenda of all candidates from the contending parties.

He said the open support for the APC candidate was timed to coincide with the aftermath of the mega rally to usher in the final push of the party for support from Lagos residents.

The spokesman said TEAM-30’s philosophy is driven by the desire to sustain the enviable development trajectory the state has been enjoying since 1999.

  • Group mobilises for Buhari, Sanwo-Olu, others in Lagos

A group in the Lagos State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), The Mandate Movement (TMM), yesterday mobilised thousands of its supporters in Ejigbo for door-to-door campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari, governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other candidates of the party in the forthcoming elections.

At a rally in the community, TMM said the move was meant to ensure that APC records landslide victory for all its candidates.

Speaking yesterday at the kick-off of the “Get Out And Vote For APC Candidates” at the Ejigbo mini-stadium, head of the movement and Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan, said the group remained committed to the principles and agenda of the APC.

The commissioner said it is in the vanguard of promoting, protecting and propagating the party’s manifesto.

He said: “The role of tendencies in parties is to act as energisers at critical periods, interpret the manifesto in a manner that advances its interests and the full development of the populace.

“We are aware that the general elections are near. On February 16, we shall go to the polls to elect our President, our senators, our members of the Federal House of Representatives. On March 2, we shall return to the polling booths to elect our governor and members of the House of Assembly.

“Our party, the APC, needs all the support it requires to accomplish this task. We are competing with over 60 parties nationwide and no fewer than 40 parties are contesting with us in the Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II.

“In an electioneering period like this, it is normal for other parties to try to put down the Herculean and heroic efforts of the Asiwaju Movement, which has moved from the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to the Action Congress (AC) and now the APC.”

Bamigbetan said the movement must have heard of the campaigns against the APC by other parties on radio, television and newspapers and how they tried to mis-interpret the programmes and projects of the party to give the impression that the APC had not done anything.

“We want to assure you that all these antics are just the efforts of the cobweb that says it will not allow an elephant to pass. As our people say, even it is predicted that an animal with horns will knock one to death, it cannot be the ambition of a snail,” he said.

Bamigbetan added that the achievements of the Asiwaju Movement in Ejigbo were legendary.

The commissioner said the establishment of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) was among the achievements of the APC administration.

According to him, the APC has executed several projects in Ejigbo, including Ejigbo Multipurpose Centre, modern secretariat, Bola Ahmed Tinubu Primary School, Oladele Alake Primary School, primary healthcare centres at Onaiwamimo, free meal, free uniforms, free General Certificate in Education (GCE) forms, free Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms and free vocational education.

This is a task that must be fulfilled. This is a task we shall fulfil. We use this opportunity to call for a free and fair election in Lagos,” Arogundade said.
