  • Sanwo-Olu unveils infrastructural roadmap for Lagos

The Lagos State gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to embark on massive infrastructural investment, if elected in this year’s general elections.

Sanwo-Olu revealed this during the Annual End of the Year Dinner and Award Night of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Lagos chapter.

The Lagos APC gubernatorial candidate, who was represented  by his running mate, Obafemi Hamzat, an engineer, as the guest speaker, assured civil engineers and Lagosians that his government would improve on existing facilities as well as initiate new ones across the state.

Hamzat, a former Lagos Commissioner for Science and Technology, as well as Works and Infrastructure, said his principal, and himself were not novice to governanace having been in the system for quite a while.

Speaking on a theme: ‘Bridging the infrastructure gap, the Lagos we know,’ Hamzat said given that infrastructure affects the development of any society, the theme was not only apt, but also timely.

According to him, the state is the melting point where the nation’s economic, social and political activities concentrate. He noted that one of the reasons pressure is mounted on Lagos infrastructure is the continuous influx of people into the state.

“You are all aware that population of Lagos is over 20 million, with a projected figure of close to 30 million in the next decade. This is despite her being the smallest State in Nigeria with a land area of 3, 577 sq.km; which translates that it occupies a paltry 0.4 per cent of total land area of Nigeria, which is 923,768 sq. km,” he said.

Drawing from statistical figures obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Hamzat disclosed that about 260, 000 people come into the state daily, while only about 25 percent of this figure return to their original places of migration. This huge migration influx to the city, he noted, is overstretching the existing infrastructure and facilities, thereby making for an urgent need to be innovative in providing infrastructure in the state.

Hamzat, nonetheless, said the challenges are surmountable with innovative approaches and collaboration with every Lagosian, especially, the professional groups, business communities and every man and woman of goodwill.

“Our plan will be to expand and improve on existing infrastructure project. Government is a continuum and we will continue with existing projects to the benefit of Lagos. Our focus remains ‘Towards a Greater Lagos: A Collective Effort’, he added.

To this end, Lagos APC deputy gubernatorial candidate said their government would work with an acronym: ‘THEME.’

“Our Promise to Lagosians is ‘THEME Lagos.” The pillar includes traffic management and transportation; health and environment; education and technology; making Lagos a 21st Century economy; entertainment and tourism.

On transportation and traffic management, Hamzat said: “Our plan will be to build an Inter Modal transport system by integrating road, rail and water transportation in Lagos to solve the problem of commuting within the metropolis. Therefore, we will move very fast to complete the ongoing Blue Line rail project from Okokomaiko-Marina and in the process aggressively prosecute the rehabilitation of Lagos Badagry Expressway; explore the actualisation of the Red line from Agbado to Marina.

Efforts will also be geared up towards fixing various inner roads across the state. To achieve this, Hamzat revealed that the three Asphalt plants in the state will be turned around and made ready to put people to work in order to make the roads motorable throughout the year.

On waterways transportation system, Hamzat said their government would improve navigation on the waterways to facilitate water transportation and promote private investment.

“Sanwo-Olu government would rejig the waste management system by getting the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), to deliver better on its mandate as the regulator, while the PSP model will be made to respond better in collection of waste in Lagos. We have plans to turn waste to sustainable wealth. This we will do by incentivising waste sorting by our people.

“Our administration, if elected would focus on increasing 220 million barrel per day water capacity to the needed 550 million gallons per day.  It is the responsibility of government to ensure continuous flow of clean and portable water.  Our vision of a Lagos hyper-city cannot afford a shortfall of such a critical resource,” he submitted.

While reacting to the lecture, the State Chairman of NICE, Lola Adetona, an engineer, hailed the vision of the APC candidate. She expressed satisfaction with the roadmap saying it is capable of turning the fortunes of the state around if implemented, and called for the involvement of indigenous engineers in the implementation of the projects.

  • Indigenous Lagosians endorse Sanwo-Olu for governor

The Committee of Indigenous Associations of Lagos State, an umbrella body of all indigenes of Lagos, has set an agenda for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, an indigene.

If Sanwo-Olu is elected in the next month’s election, the Lagos indigenes prayed the APC candidate to push for a special status for the state.

They also called for the restoration of Lagos environment and incorporation of indigenes in the governance of the state.

At a consultative meeting at the Awori House in Oregun, Ikeja, the state capital, the association, which comprises leaders from the five divisions of the state, endorsed the candidacy of Sanwo-Olu with an agreement that he would get a special status for Lagos.

They promised to stand by the APC candidate in his effort to take the state to greater heights of development.

Describing the Awori, the indigenous Ikorodu, the Epe inhabitants as well as the people of Isale Eko extractions as “original stakeholders” in the Lagos project, Sanwo-Olu said his intention to govern the state was not to fulfil an agenda against any ethnic group in the state.

He said the meeting was necessary to listen to the concerns of the indigenes.

The APC candidate said his reason for running for the Lagos top job was not for personal aggrandisement but to deploy his three-decade of professional expertise in public and private sectors to increase the fortunes of the state for the benefit of residents and the indigenes.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Since I declared my intention to run for the governorship seat of our state, I have consulted widely with various interest groups and stakeholders in the Lagos project. I believe my consultation would not be complete without meeting with the indigenes of the state. I’ve come to listen to your concerns as indigenes of Lagos.

“I am also a son of the soil. My lineage is a full-fledged Lagos. My father and grandfather are indigenes of Okepopo area of Lagos Island. In fact, my great grandfather’s house is still seating at Omididun on Lagos Island. My mother is of the Cole family of Lagos Island. I’m also married to a Lagosian, who has Brazilian and Yoruba ancestries.

“However, I am not seeking to become the governor of Okepopo or Lagos Island. I’m not fulfilling any agenda against any ethnic group whose people are part of indigenous people of Lagos. I will be the governor of all.”

Sanwo-Olu allayed the fears of Awori indigenes of Lagos, saying his government, if elected, would address their grievances.

Beyond the quality of his academic qualifications and professional experience, the APC candidate said the most valued credential he would bring to governance is his integrity. Sanwo-Olu promised not to betray the trust reposed in him by the amalgamation of the indigenous Lagosians.

He said: “Integrity is the greatest qualification I am putting at stake in this race to govern Lagos. My Five-Point programmes contained in my manifesto are carefully designed to take Lagos to a new level of development. Everybody will be part of our government and no discriminatory agenda will be initiated against anyone, irrespective of ethnic group or status.”

Sanwo-Olu allayed the fear of a women leader, Alhaja Aishatu Onitiri Kuye, that his choice of running mate was a discrimination against womenfolk.

The APC candidate said he had always enjoyed working with women because of their efficiency and result-oriented.

He promised that women would be the driver of his administration.

One of the leaders of Awori extraction and chairman of the coalition, Prof Rasheed Ojikutu, described the meeting as family affair.

The expert said it was the first time the Awori were united to meet and support a candidate they believed in.

He urged members of the association to support the APC candidate, adding that Sanwo-Olu would fulfil his promises.

  • Tunji Bello urges Lagosians to support Sanwo-Olu

It was all sweet memory, pleasurable excitement and tears of joy, as friends, families, Islamic brothers and residents of the Aroloya community and its environ gathered at the Akanni Mosque, in remembrance of Alhaja Rafatu Amobi Amode nee Akesode, a notable religious and community leader, who hailed from Lagos Island. She passed on a year ago, aged 95.

On the occasion, Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Hon. Tunji Bello, sent a message through his Special Assistant on Political Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Alao Megida, in which he (Tunji Bello) paid a glowing tribute to Alhaja Amode, describing her as an exemplary mother and God-fearing woman who led by example.

Alhaji Megida said though Hon. Bello is a childhood friend of Hakeem Amode, one of Alhaja Amode’s children based in London, the SSG still regarded Alhaja Amode  as his own mother, whose prayers and mentoring had impacted tremendously on him. He prayed that the Lord will continue to keep her in perfect peace and protect his children.

Megida said: “Hon. Bello is also using this opportunity to appeal to Lagosians to give their massive support to the APC gubernatorial candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to emerge victorious in the election coming up next year”.

Hon. Bello described the APC flag bearer as a great visionary and exemplary patriot imbued with the dynamism, resourcefulness and willpower to lift Lagos, to hitherto unsurpassed heights, adding that Sanwo-Olu will project Lagos State to the zenith of its glory, as a model state, not only in Africa, but the world as a whole.

Hakeem Amode described her mother as the greatest gift of God to him. “Though departed in the flesh, I continue to feel her in the spirit, as her presence continues to open doors of success and breakthrough for me, just as her good name and the legacies she bequeathed have continued to be a source of inspiration to me and my family”, Hakeem Amode said.

Others who equally spoke in glowing terms about the departed matriarch of the Amode family, included Alhaji Abdulrafiu Amode, head of the Amode family, Abdulrahman Amode, her son, and Alhaji Abubakar Amode, Imam of the Akanni Mosque, who is a grandchild of the deceased.

Prayers were rendered for Alhaji Shuaib Alao Amode, Alhaja Amode’s husband, who passed on in 1985 and other departed members of the family.

  • Sanwo-Olu celebrates Christmas with ailing babies, newborns

The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, visited the paediatric section of the Gbagada General Hospital on Christmas Day to lift children battling various health conditions.

Sanwo-Olu also visited the Gbaja Hospital for Maternal and Child Care in Surulere, where he donated gifts and medical consumables to new-borns and their parents.

He also had chats with adult patients at Gbagada General Hospital, cheering them up and praying for their recovery.

The APC candidate’s presence at the hospitals created moments of excitement as families of the patients gathered in groups to pray for him for showing care and identifying with them in their low moments.

Sanwo-Olu said the gesture was informed by the spirit of Christmas and his personal conviction to lift the downtrodden in their times of need. The PAC candidate noted that the hospital visits were deliberately planned on the Christmas Day to put smiles on the faces of families that could not celebrate because of ailments.

He said: “It is Christmas Day and this season is significant because it teaches us love, compassion and selflessness. While majority of us have our families and friends with us to mark the day, we need to understand that several families are in pain because their loved ones are battling various ailments at hospitals. So, it’s no Christmas for these people because they need to be with their ailing relations.

“On a day like this, I thought it necessary to identify with these families and celebrate with them. I believe this gesture will cheer them up and give them reasons to be happy. We hope that the little we have come to share with them today will strengthen them to get out of the sickbed quicker and better.”

  • Sanwo-Olu gets Jakande’s blessing

The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, has blessed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Jakande prayed for Sanwo-Olu’s success in next year’s election.

At a private visit to Jakande’s home in Ilupeju, Lagos Mainland, yesterday, the APC candidate received the blessing of the 89-year-old former governor to contest for the Lagos top seat.

Describing the octogenarian as his father and political mentor, Sanwo-Olu said the visit was to seek Jakande’s blessing and intimate him with the strides taken so far in his efforts to govern the state.

Sanwo-Olu said: “As the first executive governor of Lagos, Baba Jakande is well-respected. He is someone all of us look up to for political direction. He is an arrowhead of progressive politics and constitutional democracy. Coming to greet him in this festive period is appropriate.

“But I am also using the opportunity of this visit to draw on his experience and seek his blessing, as a leader, in my intention to govern our dear state.”

  • Ambode supporters rally for Sanwo-Olu

***says governor committed to Sanwo-Olu’s victory at polls

***denies alliance with any other party

Hundreds of supporters of Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday staged a solidarity rally to reaffirm the governor’s commitment to the election of the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state in next year’s general elections, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The rally was organised under the auspices of Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG) and was attended by thousands of the governor’s supporters.

The crowd of supporters marched from the State Secretariat in Alausa to APC’s secretariat on Acme Road in Ogba where they were recieved by the State APC Chairman, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, alongside other State executive officers of the party.

Leader of the delegation and Director General of AMSG, Hon Akeem Sulaimon said the solidarity walk was embarked upon to reaffirm the commitment of Ambode to the victory of the APC in 2019 elections at all levels in the State

He debunked any purported alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party as reported in some sections of the media.

Sulaimon, who is also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communication, said it was also important to emphasize that Ambode had truly accepted the choice of the party, adding that any contrary information is a lie.

“We are here because a lot of people lately seem to be talking for our principal, His Excellency Mr Akinwunmi Ambode claiming to be representing his interest and we need to let the whole world know that if anyone will represent his interests, it can only be those of us that belong to his campaign.

“His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode is a man of God; he is a man who believes that the party is supreme; he is a man who has accepted the choice and the position of the party. He has accepted that Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is the candidate of our great party, APC and he has equally been mobilizing not just members of his group but he has been mobilizing the party to ensure victory for Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu come 2019,” he said.

Speaking specifically on the alleged declaration of support for the opposition party by some supporters of the Governor, Sulaimon said though the rally was planned long before now, nonetheless, there was no truth in the said rumour, adding that the Governor, as a loyal party man, would not do anything to rock the boat.

“We are organizing this to show to Lagosians and Nigerians that our principal bears no grudge; he has no ill feelings. If he had wanted to fight at that time, he could have fought and so if he did not fight then, why would anybody be insinuating that he wants to fight now?

“We are here to let you know that he (Ambode) is not fighting. The Governor’s directive to us is that we should all go out and mobilize for Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Irrespective of how things might have happened, the Governor has equally benefited from the party and he says that he will not destroy the party that he has benefited from,” Sulaimon said.

Responding, Balogun commended the supporters for showing commitment to the party, saying the rally was a demonstration of Ambode’s loyalty to the party.

“Trekking from Alausa to this place under this scorching sun is a tough task no doubt and it is a demonstration of your commitment and loyalty to this party; it is a demonstration of the commitment and loyalty of Governor Ambode to APC and I want to commend you all for this,” Balogun said.

Among those who led the rally are Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muslim Folami; Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Hon Benjamin Olabinjo; Chairman of Lagos Ferry Service, Hon Paul Kalejaiye; APC chieftain, Chief Denge Anifowoshe and others.

  • Arewa Community in Lagos to hold mega rally for Sanwo-Olu

THE Arewa Community in Lagos State has promised to hold a mega rally for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in the coming 2019 governorship election in Lagos State.

The group stated that the action was part of the efforts to ensure victory for Sanwo-Olu as next governor of Lagos State.

The declaration was made by the leader of the Arewa Community Support Group for Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (BOS), Alhaji Muhammed Alhassan who, with some members of the group, presented a communique containing other relevant support plans to the candidate in his Lagos office yesterday.

Alhassan said Sanwo-Olu had won the hearts and minds of the Arewa Community in Lagos State by his initial gesture of paying a visit to the Arewa Council of Chiefs.

He also noted that the candidate had shown a commendable sense of responsibility and appreciation, which had endeared him to their chiefs and the entire Arewa Community in Lagos State.

“You have demonstrated an exceptional sense of responsibility and appreciation with your initial visit to our Council of Chiefs in this state, who are our respectable leaders with tremendous influence on our conduct and well-being in Lagos State.

“From that very kind gesture and other positive things we have heard about you, we have come here to say thank you, to present a communique with support activities and officially declare that the Arewa Community in this state will be giving you all the support to win the coming election and be declared the next governor of Lagos, In Shaa Allah.

“It will also interest you to know that we are holding a mega rally for you in Tafawa Balewa Square in January 2019, where we will attract more voters for you and sensitise over one million people from the Arewa Community with Permanent Voter Cards  (PVCs) to campaign vigorously for your victory”, he said.

Sanwo-Olu, while appreciating the group, said the Arewa Community in Lagos State was an important component in the socio-economic development of the state.

He added that he would, if elected, address all the yearnings of the community and ensure that all the various leaders of the group are part of the deliberations regarding education support for and improvement of their children who are living in Lagos State.

“We thank you so much. Lagos is a home for you all. We appreciate your contributions to the socio-economic growth of this state. We’ve heard your concerns and demands. We promise that we will address all the issues, including educational support for your children here in Lagos when we are elected. Let me say it again that ours is going to be a government of inclusiveness where we are going to work together to achieve greater results”, he said.

  • Sanwo-Olu hails Okotie at Grace 2018 night

Lagos State APC governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was the special guest of honour at the GRACE programme of the Household of God, Church, Oregun, on Sunday December 16.

His presence created a huge buzz inside the ultramodern auditorium as he quietly walked down the aisle with just two aides. He was met by the host and visioner of the GRACE programme, flamboyant Rev. Chris Okotie, who never fails to impress as a style icon, platform orator, singer/performer and Bible expositor.

On the special night, Okotie totally ignored his political ambitions and concentrated on the proceedings which included donations to four charities and giving the late Reginald Akpofure, first Nigerian principal of the iconic Kings College, the posthumours Karis Award 2018. The most exciting highlight of GRACE is usually the Queen Esther costume pageant, given to the contestant whose costume best portrayed a female Bible character. This year’s contest was won by Ruth Michael who beat 15 others to the coveted crown.

Sanwo-Olu stunned the audience when he mounted the podium. Not only did he prove to be a consummate political tactician, his brief, on-point remarks covered all highlights of the GRACE night.

As always, Rev. Okotie was the star of every GRACE event. He rendered two riveting songs that could hit No. 1 on the dance music charts anywhere in the world.

Okotie’s call for “Household Ladies” to come forward and dance, spurned an explosive Holy Ghost party that lasted for about an hour. The compassion of Rev. Okotie towards the less privileged was clearly evident in the donations to four charities-Spinal Cord Injuries Association, Sunshine Foundation, Little Saints Orphanage, and Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted- and the KARIS Awardee.

Each of the charities went home with N2million naira, including the KARIS recipient,

  • U.S group stages rally for Sanwo-Olu

Hundreds of supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, under the platform of Pathfinders Group U.S.A, staged a rally yesterday to mobilise voters in Ifako-Ijaye and Ojokoro areas to vote for the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other candidates of the party in next year’s general elections.

The rally, which kicked off from Excellence Hotel in Ogba, Ikeja, took the massive crowd through Ifako-Ijaye APC secretariat and ended at the party’s secretariat in Ojokoro.

The crowd comprised of youths, men and women wearing branded white T-shirts with the embossed photographs of Samwo-Olu and his running mate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as well as the party’s flag and logo.

The crowd’s solidarity songs blared from speakers mounted on vehicles.

The people sang and dance in solidarity with Sanwo-Olu and APC.

Addressing reporters, President of the Pathfinders Group U.S.A, Alhaji Hakeem Yusuf said: “As a group, we are all over Lagos with our campaign activities. We have banners, posters and other souvenirs.

“We believe that this rally will be an advantage to mobilise more people and create awareness for Sanwo-Olu. We believe in him; we believe in APC; we believe in Lagos; we believe in Nigeria. It is a party of change that is going to give us the dividends of democracy.”

Yusuf expressed confidence that Sanwo-Olu would win “definitely with a wide margin and by mass votes because the people believe in the APC”.

He added: “If you see all the development we have been experiencing here, Sanwo-Olu is continuity in Lagos State. You will understand that there is so much rapid development across the state.”

  • Sanwo-Olu’s royal acceptance

It wasn’t meant to be so but it turned out that way at the end of the one week courtesy visits to the ranking monarchs in all the five divisions of Lagos State by the governorship flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

Mr Sanwo-Olu decidedly wanted to be refreshingly different from the norm of party candidates on the hustings, first visiting the palaces of the monarchs in the communities or area where they were to mount the soapboxes for campaigns.

He felt he has to do his own in a different way, uniquely his.

He designed the format, and allowed his directorate in charge of traditional and chieftaincy affairs to flesh it up. Contacts were made by the directorate, headed by a veteran in politics and the profession, Prince Bayo Osiyemi, to reach out to the foremost monarchs in the state, across the five divisions of the state namely Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos and Epe from where IBILE was coined.

The mission essentially was to knock at the doors of tradition, to explain why Sanwo-Olu’s project came to be and why as a firm believer in our tradition and culture, their custodians must first be consulted and their royal blessings obtained before venturing out for open campaigns. But that initial narrow effort assumed a life of its own and blossomed into what this writer will correctly dub “electioneering before electioneering”. The idea was novel, the effect was unprecedented.

Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu chose to kick off from his base, in his belief that charity, as they say, must begin from home. In case, one needs to be reminded, the APC candidate was born and raised in the Omididun area of Central Lagos, the area from where the first chairman of the Lagos Town Council, as it was then known, Alhaji Ganiyu Olawale Dawodu, emerged; an area next door to Epetedo that produced the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.

First port of call was the Iga Idunganran, home of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Aremu Osuolale Akiolu. The quintessential monarch, who is the permanent chairman of the state’s council of Obas and chiefs, was in his best element and tradition of talking truth to power.

He made it known that Sanwo-Olu is a good man against who he had no objection if he was voted in as the next governor , after incumbent, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode. He averred that the nimble Lagosian has a good upbringing and pedigree and cautioned those around the APC flag bearer to be true, sincere and committed to him.

Oba Akiolu, who was surrounded by his white cap chiefs, told his eminent audience that Lagos State was too precious to be left in the hands of political neophytes or mediocres, pointing out that he was pleased with the choice of Sanwo-Olu, who has served in crucial areas of government where he had distinguished himself.

That seemed to set the tone as other paramount rulers of Badagry, Ikorodu and Epe, Oba Akran, the Aholu Menu Toyi; Oba Kamaldeen Sotobi, the Ayangburen; and Oba Animashaun, the Oloja respectively; spoke in similar vein while urging Sanwoolu to live up to his promise of making Lagos greater, if voted into office.

The massive reception by thousands of party faithful and other residents of Lagos Island, Iru, Ajiran, Epe, Badagry, Ijanikin, Ikorodu, Igando and Isolo, who thronged the palaces, made a cab driver, Mr Samuel from Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State, wonder what remained, if what he saw could not be regarded as real electioneering campaign. To him, Sanwo-Olu was “a done deal”.

If Ikorodu put up the most organised reception for a governorship candidate, what played out in Epe was incredible and confounding. Being outgoing governor Ambode’s hometown, the initial scepticism of a cold reception, gave way to a huge assemblage of people who received the APC candidate at T- junction, the entrance to Epe township, and led him in a motorcade, swarmed by party enthusiasts, to the palace of the Oloja of the town, where Sanwo-Olu was  welcomed by other eminent monarchs in the division like the Olu of Epe, the Aladesonyin of Noforija, the Usen Araka of Poka as well as the traditional rulers of Ibeju and Lekki.

It is evident from the one week visits, that when proper electioneering begins this week, a sure head start had been gained by Mr Sanw-Olu, whose ICG’s Director-General, Mr Tayo Aýinde has evolved unique campaign strategies that would make other parties candidates’ have a good run for their money.
