  • Ighalo scores again

Super Eagles’ striker, Odion Ighalo scored the first goal to help Shanghai Shenhua secure a 2-1 over Henan Jianye in a Chinese Super League game played yesterday at the Zhengzhou Hanghai Stadium.

Just back from international duties where his seven goals ensured Nigeria clinched top spot in the AFCON qualifiers, the ex-Watford forward was handed a starting shirt by manager, Quique

Sanchez Flores and he justified that inclusion by putting his team ahead in the 52nd minute after the first half ended goalless.

The Nigerian International buried a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner after teammate Wang Wei had set him up.

Ighalo nearly grabbed his brace in the 76th minute when his speculative shot narrowly went wide of the left side of goal.

That goal was his second for the club since joining last month, having played three games for  the Hongkou Stadium outfit in the topflight. The victory placed Shanghai Shenhua on the tenth position in the league’s latest standings  ahead their next game on April 7 at home against Beijing Renhe.

  • 10 killed, scores injured in Imo cult war

Ten students have been killed and several others injured in a cult war at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State.

The killings by rival cults on vengeance mission have been on in the last one week.

Victims were either shot or clubbed to death before being decapitated by the cultists.

It was gathered that the clash between two rival cults, the Ayes and Baggers confraternities, had lasted over two weeks.

Residents have fled their homes for fear of being attacked.

Academic activities have been grounded at the polytechnic. Students have deserted their hostels.

The management of the institution, The Nation learnt, had restricted movement in and out of the school after 6pm.

One of the students, who preferred anonymity, said: “We are under attack by cultists. Please help us to inform the police because our lives are in danger. Since 10 days now, there have been clashes between two rival cults. They said it is a supremacy war. No fewer than 10 persons have been shot dead.”

The visibly scared student added: “Since I gained admission into this polytechnic, I have never witnessed this kind of violence. The gunshots are frightening. Please don’t mention my name.”

An indigene of one of the host communities, who also does not want his name in print, said since the deadly cult clash started, they had been locking themselves inside their rooms.

Police spokesman Orlando Ikeokwu said officers had been deployed in the polytechnic and other troubled areas, adding that suspects had been arrested.

The Rector, Martin Aligbe, in a phone chat said: “We have not confirmed any of the victims to be our student. The cult clashes are happening in the villages, they are not occurring on our campus. But we are worried because some of our students live in these villages. We have reached out to the police to tighten security.”

  • Two dead, scores injured in Ojo tanker fire

Two persons were killed yesterday when a fuel tanker exploded at Barracks bus stop, Ojo, near Mile 2, on Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Ojo.

Scores were injured and five vehicles burnt in the incident

The 33,000-litre fuel-laden tanker fell on a bad portion of the road and exploded when a container truck and three other vehicles ran into it.

An eye witness said passersby ran for safety.

The incident, he said, occurred around 8am, adding that the area was deserted for over an hour.

It was learnt that the fire was put out around 10am by Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other security officials.

Another eyewitness, Mr. Ralph Nwafor, said the tanker fell in front of Ojo Military Cantonment, adding that the road was blocked following the inferno.

Nwafor said: “I saw two bodies burnt beyond recognition. A fuel tanker, a container and other vehicles were also burnt. Many people were injured as a result of the fear caused by the fire. People ran helter-skelter, they ran for safety. Those on okada were injured.”

He said although the road was under construction, the bad portion made the tanker to fall, resulting in the fire.

“The suffering here is too much. This is not the first time trucks will fall at the bad spot. A similar incident occurred here last year, claiming lives and damaging cars. The government must do something urgently about this road.”

Lagos Fire Service Acting Director Rasaki Musibau, who visited the scene, warned motorists to avoid parking their vehicles at the spot overnight, to avert fire.

In a statement by his Chief Public Affairs Officer Bola Ajao, Musibau confirmed the death of two persons and the wounding of five others. Witnesses said the injured were many.

Musibau said the fire gutted an IVECO tipper loaded with sand, a Mack trailer carrying Sumec and Elemax generators, a parked car and others.

  • Scores walk for clean environment

Scores of environment conscious people have commemorated this year World Environment Day in Kwara state by staging a walk in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The walk which was organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Vicfold Recyclers in conjunction with the state ministry of environment kicked off at the popular Post Office area, went through Murtala Muhammed way and ended at the Ipata Market.

Some of the participants wore hand gloves and picked refuse in gutters, putting them in nylon bags. They also urged shop owners along the highways on the need to keep their environment clean.

Speaking with The Nation, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Vicfold Recyclers, Amusa T. Victor said his organisation was celebrating the day with such sensitisation.

He lamented people’s awful approach to waste disposal and management generally in the country.

He said, “Everybody does not like waste. People don’t want to see waste. People’s attitude to waste management and disposal has been terrible. That is why we are raising awareness on the involvement of all in waste disposal, as government alone cannot do all things. It all boils down to our attitude to our environment.

“Members of the public are encouraged to take good care of their waste. There are better good values that can be given to waste. As they say, a man’s waste is another person’s treasure. We should appreciate our environment by keeping it clean always. We should make sure we don’t liter our environment with wastes and we should not block the drains. And then a big no to air pollution, people should stop burning waste as it does not do us any good.

“I am advising that in commemoration of the world environment day, let there be an improvement of how people take care of their environment. It will do us a world of good. We are connecting to nature.”

On the exercise, Mr. Victor added that “we are celebrating the World Environment Day today. We are all out to raise awareness about protecting our environment and getting people involved. That is why I am saying this is our planet and our home. Everyone needs to play his role.

“Vicfold Recyclers is a social enterprise and what we do is to give value for waste. We actually give people reward in exchange for their waste. We collect waste especially solid waste in exchange for gift items like electronics and cash and even food items.”

  • German cup: Ujah scores

    German cup: Ujah scores

Anthony Ujah put a difficult week behind him by scoring the winner for Werder Bremen in a DFB Pokal (German Cup) game on Tuesday night.

Ujah missed a penalty which ultimately cost his side two points in the 1-1 Bundesliga draw at home for FC Cologne and received stick from many of the faithful.

The Super Eagles attacker, however, showed great mental strength to put the set back behind him in an impressive performance for the Die Werderaner (The River Islanders) on Tuesday.

Ujah netted Werder’s fourth goal in the 4-3 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park in a feisty third round game and thus progress to the quarter-final.

Werder’s Florian Grillitsch won the ball against Julian Korb and beat three Gladbach players with his outrageously stunning pass to Ujah who proceeded to dummy yet another defender as he honed in on goal.

He then cut inside before striking home unerringly and with frightening force past the Gladbach goalkeeper, Yann Sommer to temporarily make it 4-2 to the visitors.

The hosts then pulled a goal back through Branimir Hrgota to set up a tense final few seconds but the Nigerian’s goal proved to be the decisive moment in the game.

He spoke afterwards to the club’s official website, www.werder.de.

“We knew that every team has a chance in the cup and we embraced that today. We piled on a lot of pressure in the first half but we didn’t score a goal.

“The fact that we put four past Gladbach in one half makes me very proud. It was a superb performance from us and we’re all pleased to be in the next round,” he said.

Ujah has now scored 10 goals for Werder in all competitions this season.

  • Scores injured as cultists strike at IMT

Scores injured as cultists strike at IMT

A final year Mechanical Engineering student of the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu cheated death, last Monday, when a three-man gang attacked him on the campus. The attempt to kill the victim failed as the gun held by his assailants failed to discharge, but many students got injured in the incident. EMMANUEL AHANONU reports.

What could have been a bloodshed was averted at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Enugu State, last Monday. While activities were at the peak on the campus, some hoodlums, suspected to be secret cult members, struck. There was pandemonium as everyone ran for dear life, turning the campus into a ghost town.

The cultists’ target, a witness said, was a burly final year Mechanical Engineering student, who was in a storey-building classroom when the assailants arrived. The three-man gang isolated their target from the crowd and pushed him to the floor, pulling out their gun.

The witness told CAMPUSLIFE that the suspected cultists made attempts to shoot at their victim but their gun could not discharge bullets.

While this was going on, students, who were around the building, ran in various directions. Some, who were trapped in the classrooms on the upper floor of the building, jumped down. Many students got injured as they tried to escape from the scene. Some girls, who could not run, stood dazed, watching the horror scene.

A student, who simply gave her name as Norah, told CAMPUSLIFE that the assailants aimed at their victim’s head but their gun’s trigger seized. She said two of the cultists continued to hit the victim with hard materials, while one of them reloaded the gun.

“When he was done, he made another attempt to shoot at the victim, who was now bleeding profusely, but the gun still could not discharge bullets,” she said.

When it dawned on the assailants that their mission had failed, they fled the scene, abandoning their victim in a pool of blood. The cultists, CAMPULIFE learnt, escaped through AfriHub Building, where they joined a waiting car and drove out of the campus.

One of the victim’s classmates, who pleaded anonymity, said it was the second attack in the building by secret cult members in one week.

He said: “The cult members visited exactly a week earlier. When they arrived in our class, they brought out a gun and ordered everyone to lie down. After a while, they ordered us to raise our faces and looked around. When they discovered that the person they were looking for was not in the class, they left. Now, they have come back again to terrorise us in the class. While all these happened, the school security officers were nowhere to be found.”

Another student, who also did not want his name in print, said the school authorities deployed Man O’ War cadets, more than 20 minutes after the assailants left the campus, to harass students and search their bags.

Investigation by CAMPUSLIFE showed that the campus has become unsafe because of the incessant attacks by cultists. A lecturer, who simply gave his name as Mr Ugwu, said cult clashes were becoming a common occurrence in the school.

It would be recalled that government had recently embarked on “operation wipe out cultism”, following cult clashes that led to the death of students in Nsukka zone.

The institution’s Director of Public Relations, Dr Ifeanyi Ojobor, denied the incident when he spoke to CAMPUSLIFE on telephone.

He said: “I was on campus till the evening on that day and I never heard of such cult attack.”

But, students have appealed to the management to strengthen the security on the campus. They urged the authorities to equip the school security officers to combat the growing violence on the campus.

  • Scores feared dead in Arepo pipeline fire

Scores feared dead in Arepo pipeline fire

Scores were yesterday feared dead at an oil facility at Arepo, Ogun State.

They died in the System 2B pipeline fire that erupted from a clash of two rival gangs, whose members stormed the facility to scoop product from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

It was gathered that an explosion occurred during a gun duel between the rival gangs, who regularly storm the area in boats laden with plastic containers to steal petrol.

The victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition in the inferno, which occurred after midnight on Tuesday.

The owners of the facility, the Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a NNPC subsidiary, said it had cut off supplies through the affected pipelines, but the fire was still raging in the swampy area last night.

Some eyewitnesses said they saw floating bodies on the Majidun River. Others claimed that some bodies were evacuated by security personnel.

But, PPMC spokeman Nasir Imodagbe said nobody had access to the scene because of the fire.

A source claimed he sighted five bodies on the river, adding that more may have been removed by security personnel.

He also confirmed that there were several others burnt beyond recognition.

The incident came few weeks after the Federal Government stopped the multi-billion naira pipeline protection contract awarded to the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) by the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.

System 2B is an important pipeline that transports more than 11 million litres of petrol daily from the Atlas Cove Jetty across the Southwest, spanning some 512 kilometres.

The pipeline has been a source of attraction to vandals due to its accessibility, despite huge investment by the NNPC to adopt horizontal directional drilling (HDD), that could have buried the pipelines deeper than the previous 1.5-feet installation layout.

A major attack occurred in Arepo early in the year.

At the time of filing this report, the actual casualty figure could not be confirmed, as rescuers were yet to gain access into the scene for fear of being killed.

It was learnt that neither the police nor the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the bodies mandated to protect pipelines, were on duty when the vandals struck.

A source told The Nation that the security agencies had abandoned their duty posts, adding that emergency workers said they could not enter the canal where the fire was raging for lack of protection.

Another source identified the victims as the vandals, their relations and those who buy stolen fuel in canoes, buses and tankers.

Because of the lucrative nature of their activity and the availability of a market, it was learnt, the vandals make between N300, 000 and N2 million daily, depending on their level of involvement.

Imodagbe told The Nation on phone last night that the fire broke out in the morning and that PPMC had mobilised to put it out after which the damage will be assessed.

However, he noted that because the Arepo pipeline right-of-way is located in a difficult terrain, it had not been possible to access the point where the pipeline was vandalised. Until we have access to the pipeline, we may not be able to put out the fire but we have cut off fuel supply to the line, he added.

He said: “We are aware of the Arepo fire but you know it is in a difficult terrain and we have not been able to get access to the scene. We have stopped pumping product to the pipeline to bring down the  level of combustion. We are working with other agencies of the government, including fire-fighters, to get access to the fire point and put out the fire.

“Currently, we are not able to assess the damage including the casualty figure – if any. It is only when we put out the fire that we will be able to assess the damage, repair the pipeline and resume pumping of product.”

On measures against vandalism and product theft, Imodagbe said that the police were monitoring the pipeline. He noted that even the Office of the Inspector-General of Police is involved in the policing of the pipeline.

“Towards the end of past administration, we engaged the services of community security (the Odua Peoples’ Congress).  The community policing contract has just elapsed,” he added.

Arepo has been a pipeline vandals’ haven for years. In September 2012, vandals killed three members of staff of NNPC who were sent to repair vandalised pipe there. Between September 2012 and April 2013, about four incidents of vandalism occurred there claiming several lives.

However, another source claimed that the fire broke out after the vandals’ boat developed a fault and went up in flames in the canal.

The source said: “They said that the guys had finished their business but their boat developed a fault and in the process of fixing it, an explosion occurred. Others were injured but more than a hundred were burnt beyond recognition. We could not recognise them.

“It is a very sad day for those guys because it is  not just a job where one person is involved. It is like a family business because they introduce their relations to it and even buy jerrycans for them to join.”

Although rescue workers alleged that the scene is about two kilometres away from residential area and doubted the possibility of innocent citizens being victims, unconfirmed reports claimed that over 100 persons might have died in the mishap.

An eyewitness said: “We cannot enter that place. No one has been able to gain access into the canal. We do not have security protection and even the security personnel are afraid of their lives.

“It happened behind the NUJ estate and about two kilometres from the residential area. I think only the vandals are likely victims, since there is no possibility of innocent people going 50metres close to the canal.

“We cannot enter that place unless we are sure the vandals have removed their casualties, else we may be killed.”

Police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said policemen do not work in pipelines. His NSCDC counterpart, Emmanuel Okey, said he had not been briefed on the development.

Ojukwu said: “I do not know the casualty figure. It is a calamity and we are investigating the cause of the clash as well as the fire.”

Asked why policemen attached to the pipeline were not on duty, Ojukwu said: “Policemen do not work on pipelines. We are only involved now because of the incident.”

Also confirming the incident, the Southwest spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the vandals’ clash occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

He said: “An unconfirmed report on a clash between different groups of vandals at Arepo around midnight has led to pipeline explosion.

“NNPC has been alerted about the explosion and it immediately shut down supplies to suffocate the fire, while the NNPC safety unit is making effort to put out the fire.

“No one can confirm if there are casualties or any injuries because we have not accessed the place.”
