  • NLC scores BPE below 10%

The factional President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero has scored the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) below 10 per cent in performance on the premise that most of the companies the agency privatised are now moribund.

He advised the in-coming government of Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) to review the activities of the agency with a view to ensuring that the interest of workers are properly taken care of before embarking on privatisation.

Comrade Ajaero made this remark at the end of the Central Working Committee meeting of the congress held Lagos.

According to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the congress resolved to develop a blue print on how to achieve steady electricity supply, adding that there should be a road map on how many megawatts of electricity should be generated yearly over a period of time.

The congress reaffirmed its commitment to the unity of the labour movement in Nigeria based on the principles of trade union independence, fairness, strong internal democracy, equity, solidarity, gender balance and justice.

Members of the CWC also reiterated their commitment to genuine dialogue with an independent reconciliation committee to be constituted by labour veterans and civil society leaders with a view to addressing the current challenges facing the congress.

Ajaero enjoined the government to focus on expanding the frontier for job creation through value added activities in agriculture and manufacturing.

“The president-elect must muster the political will to confront the hydra headed challenge of smuggling, electricity failure, faking and counterfeiting of made-in-Nigeria goods.

“We demand special attention to address the challenge of electricity supply in the country and in particular in the immediate term accelerated solution for industrial power needs,” he said.

He pointed out that once power needs of industries are addressed and the new government is able to create stability in the micro-economic environment, the power prospect for expanded industrial development and job creation is huge.

He also urged the in-coming administration to address income inequality and widening gap between the poor and the rich through wage improvements and progressive tax administration, even as the minimum wage committee was mandated to develop and send a proposal to the Federal Government and the transition committee.

  • One killed, scores injured at Ibadan rally

    •Parties trade blame

An attack on supporters of Accord at Odinjo, Iyana Modina in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday, left one dead and an unspecified number of persons injured.

Two Accord candidates- Gbenga Adewusi (House of Representatives) and Ademola Ige (House of Assembly)- organised the rally.

Hoodlums attacked their supporters, which led to the death of one of the party supporters.

Accord, in a statement by the Director General of the Rashidi Ladoja Campaign Organisation, Adeolu Adeleke, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of sponsoring the hoodlums.

It posited that the party carried out the attack because of the perceived rising profile of Accord in the state.

Though Adeleke claimed that two Accord supporters were killed, police spokesman Kayode Ajisebutu said only one person was killed. The police spokesman said three people had been arrested.

Adeleke said: “Worried by the growing popularity and acceptance of Accord in Oyo State, scores of APC thugs swooped on a peaceful rally of our House of Assembly and House of Representatives candidates, Ademola Ige and Gbenga Adewusi at Odinjo-Ode-Ige, Iyana Modina in Ibadan South-East Local Government.

“The thugs carried guns and other weapons when they stormed the rally and opened fired on our supporters and killed two of them on the spot. Fifteen people were injured, more unknown number of our supporters left with varying degrees of injuries.

“A team from SARS arrested three of the thugs with pump action guns; other members of the gang fled.”

But the APC denied the allegation, saying thugs among Adewusi’s supporters engaged urchins in a supremacy battle.

The party added that Adewusi had been fingered in a recent unrest when he allegedly led thugs to attack some residents and APC members in Aremo and Ode Aje, to announce his arrival in Accord from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It pointed out that the APC is a party of intellectuals, stressing that it does not habour thugs.

The APC‘s Director of Media and Publicity, Olawale Sadare, said: “Neither our members nor supporters were involved in the fracas, which was recorded at Odinjo yesterday.

“We had it from sources that some thugs in the campaign team of Gbenga Adewusi (aka Arole), who is the Accord Party candidate for Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency engaged some street urchins in a supremacy battle and this resulted in a free-for-all.

“We recall that the same Arole was allegedly involved in an unrest at Aremo/Ode Aje  shortly after his defection to his new party from the PDP, when he led political thugs to attack some residents and members of our party in what a source close to him said was to create an awareness of his arrival in Accord.

“APC does not harbour political thugs and we do not sponsor violence in whatever guise.

“Therefore, we urge law enforcement agencies to carry out necessary investigation and ensure those found culpable are prosecuted.”

Scores dump PDP for APC in Benue

The Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded its campaign rallies yesterday in Benue North East Senatorial District with the reception of scores of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defectors into its fold in Logo.
The venue was the LGEA Primary School at Ugba, the headquarters of Logo Local Government Area, where Governor Gabriel Suswam hails from.
APC chieftains, including its governorship and senatorial candidates, Chief Samuel Ortom and Senator Barnabas Gemade, were elated at the defection.
It was the climax of the tour of the seven local government areas in the district.
Leaders of those in Logo, who renounced PDP membership and burnt their cards, included a former Logo Local Government Chairman Mike Kondoun and Mr James Anbua, who won election into the House of Assembly during the aborted Gen. Sani Abacha-led transition programme.
They said they dumped the PDP in solidarity with Ortom and Gemade.
Anbua recalled that in 1998, he persuaded majority of Logo residents in the defunct All Peoples Party (APP) to join the PDP.
He said history was repeating itself as APC, which they just joined, had become the preferred choice of most Nigerians.
Gemade said he had a special affinity with the people of the area, which started with his father.
The senator said he would always carry them along in his political affairs.
APC State Chairman Abba Yaro said the large turnout of party faithful and the defection showed that Suswam was not on ground in his home.

    Ubali scores 2014 high

Veteran tennis coach Mohammed Ubali has described 2014 as a fruitful year for tennis , adding that he looks forward to better run this year.

One of the highlights of 2014 was  the addition in the tennis calendar that saw NPA national tennis championship as well as the Ikoyi Masters all of which added to the regulars, Governors Cup and Dala Hard Court respectively.

The year, especially towards the end provided a  tight schedule for tennis players in the country, insisting that the only way players can get better is by playing regularly.

“I would say the 2014 was a good year for tennis, we recorded additions in the calendar and our players had more challenges aside from opportunity of earning points and prize money.  You can recall how the players moved from the CBN Open to the Governors Cup then the NPA tourney to Dala.  That is how it should be and I must say if we can continue like that the game will find its way back to the top,” said Ubali who encouraged corporate bodies who identified with the game last year to be part of the show this year.  He disclosed that the new year will open for Nigeria with participation in Africa Junior Championship (AJC) billed for Togo from January 9 to 17 .

“We are hoping that 2015 will also record impressive run.  It will start with the Africa Junior Championship in Togo and I am optimistic we will come out tops in Togo and other championships that will follow,” he enthused

    Ike Uche scores, injured again

Out of favour Super Eagles striker, Ikechukwu Uche scored but suffered an injury setback on his return to Spanish La Liga side Villarreal as they held Borussia Monchengladbach to a 1-1 draw in their 2014/15 UEFA Europa League Group A opener at the Borussia Park in Germany last night.

Monchengladbach, two-time UEFA Cup winners, went into the break with a 1-0 advantage following Patrick Herrmann’s 21st-minute strike before the Nigeria international, who came in as a second-half substitute, rescued a point for the Yellow Submarines in the 68th minute when he steered Manu Trigueros’ pass into the net with his first touch of the match.

Uche had just recovered from a muscle strain he sustained during Villarreal’s 2-0 away victory over Levante on 24th August 2014. The injury forced him out of the club’s UEFA Europa League home and away matches against Astana, League game against Barcelona, club friendly against Celtic and he also failed to recover for last weekend’s La Liga match against Granada.

The former Real Zaragoza striker, who could be described as a super substitution, scored with what proved to be his only touch of the contest, before being stretchered off due to a clash with onrushing Monchengladbach goalkeeper, Yann Sommer.

Uche received treatment to try to continue, but the Villarreal goalscorer was led down the tunnel by the club’s physios. He was later replaced by Jonathan Dos Santos.

This latest injury will no doubt be a setback for the 30-year-old who is eyeing a return to the Super Eagles.
