  • Drogba: I’ll be at Chelsea next season

Drogba: I’ll be at Chelsea next season

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says he will remain at the club next season, despite his current deal expiring in the summer.

The 36-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge in July after stints with Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray, signing a one-year contract with the Blues.

Drogba has made 27 appearances, many as a substitue, in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s men this season and says he is happy to continue in west London.

“My project for next year will be on a pitch with Chelsea,” he told Telefoot.

Drogba was left out of Chelsea’s starting line-up for the clash with Manchester City on Saturday, despite Diego Costa’s suspension, featuring only as a late substitute as the Blues drew with Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Loic Remy was preferred to the Ivorian and scored the opening goal of the game, but Drogba says he has no problems with the decision to start him on the bench.

“He played a great game against City. That shows that he is resourceful,” he added.

“We’ve showed that we can present a strong offensive force despite the absentees.

“It’s obvious that I would like to play, but I’m not miserable.”

  • Fed Govt okays N26b for dry season farming

Fed Govt okays N26b for dry season farming

President Goodluck Jonathan at the weekend announced the release of N26 billion by the Federal Government for this year’s dry season farming.

Jonathan, who spoke at the 2015 Agrifest at the Eagle Square, Abuja, pledged the support of his administration to farmers.

The president used the event to highlight his administration’s successes in agriculture.

Nigeria, he said, would not be held hostage by rice importers, adding that the country is working to attain self-sufficiency in rice production.

Jonathan said: “To further boost your efforts to produce more food for our nation, I am pleased to announce here today the release of N26 billion naira towards the 2015 Dry Season Farming Programme.

“Nigeria, our dear country, will not be held hostage by rice importers. There will be no sacred cows under my watch. All those owing Nigeria on rice import duties must pay.”

The president said the private sector have put over N45 billion private investment in new oil palm plantation.

The investment, he said, would allow farmers to cultivate 70,000 hectares of new plantations to allow Nigeria to become self-sufficient in palm oil production by 2016.

He said: “I am excited that today, Okomu, Presco, PZ – Wilmar and medium size oil palm estate operators such as Wilbahi are taking the lead in revamping our vast oil palm plantations.

“We will continue to support the revamping of our oil palm industry and support the private sector to build new refineries to process crude palm oil produced in Nigeria.”

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said government was supporting 27 Nagropreneur with N122 million take-off grant to do their business.

The youths were given N5 million each under the Youth Empowerment in Agriculture Programme.

The minister added that the ministry would work closely with all states government to ensure capacity-building for youths.

Also, Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said most of the 1.2 million jobs created in 2014 were in the agriculture sector.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala explained that without agriculture, the nation would not make much progress.

“Because of agriculture, inflation has reduced. We are showing that we can feed ourselves,” she said.

  • ‘How to avoid fire this season’

The Abia State Fire Service has warned residents to be careful while handling inflammable materials and steer clear of firecrackers in order to prevent fire outbreaks in the dry season.

Speaking with our reporter on the telephone, Mr Victor Gbaruko, the fire service chief, said it is more economical to prevent a fire outbreak than fight it.

According to him, most of the fire outbreaks recorded in the state in 2014 were attributable to the depletion of the ozone layer and faults in electrical circuits.

“We recorded over 90 fire incidents in the state this year and most of them occurred during the rainy season and now that we are entering the dry or harmattan season, it would not be out of place if we record more fire outbreak.

“And this calls for caution on the way we handle inflammable and combustible materials in our homes, offices and among others. The ban on the use of fireworks and knockouts are still in place. People should not endanger the lives and property of others simply because they want to play fireworks and have fun.

“The truth is that it is more beneficial and cost effective for us to avoid fire outbreak than attending to it. People that have warehouses should make sure that they make them to be airy as the changes in the weather condition due to the depletion of the ozone layer can instantaneous heat that could lead to overheating and where there is no enough space, it could trigger off fire outbreak.

“People should avoid panic-buying, storage of PMS and other inflammable materials in their homes as storing such materials could be a catalyst to fire during an outbreak.

“Because of the epileptic power, supply Aba and Abia residents should cultivate the culture of switching off and unplugging their electrical appliances during bedtime, going out for work or business and when those appliances are not in use. Electrical appliances at home and in offices should be the one that has been certified and approved for use by the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON)”.

On shortage of manpower and logistics facing the agency, Gbaruko declined comments but however stated that the fire agency would try to work effectively with the number of the personnel at its disposal, even as he admitted that there was the need to boost the agency’s workforce to match their work rate in the state.

  • Why Buhari is man for the season

Like the drop of rain that brings relief after a prolonged period of drought, the emergence of General Muhammad Buhari (GMB) as presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, has already brought considerable joy and relief to a few Nigerians who see the Generals’s General as yet another hope and the APC as the only credible platform that can save Nigeria from the current state of hopelessness.

Of course the PDP never believed the APC could manage the presidential primaries successfully considering the pedigree of aspirants and considering the way such exercises had gone in the past. But with the outcome of the delegates election and the unwavering support other contestants have openly given to endorse GMB, it is clear to everyone now that APC means business with this election and the party is set to give Nigeria the type of real leadership that can bring about genuine transformation, not the types we see on television adverts that derive from artist impressions of development projects.

There is somehow a semblance between the GMB candidacy and HOPE 93; the campaign platform used by the late business mogul, Chief MKO Abiola. The general acceptance of the former head of state was just like the case with Abiola; cuts across tribes and religion even when the other party tried with a lot of sweat to paint the APC flagbearer in negative religious and ethnic colours. The level of trust that the low and mighty have expressed towards the General, deriving from his track record of integrity in public and private undertakings, is akin to the general trust men and women, the old and the young had towards Abiola. We all knew Abiola would not tamper with our collective wealth because he already had more enough, and today we  know that GMB cannot do it; he did not do it when he was much younger, it is not now that he would start the ugly game that the present ruling party has elevated to statecraft.

GMB offers us hope, against the present gloom and despair in the land. The gloom is all around us as a nation. It is present in the failure of the ruling government to offer any reasonable explanation for its inability to end the spate of killings in the north-east, the gloom is there in the home of every mother who has a daughter among the over 200 Chibok girls now gone without trace for almost 300 days; it is there in the home of every mother who has lost a son or daughter to the slaughter’s slab of Bokko Haram, it is there in the heart of every woman who has suddenly become a widow because of the failure by government to provide security for the nation. It is there in the heart of every Internally Displaced Person, men and women who were once home owners but have become homeless today, men and women who used to feed others but today depend on rations given by Victim Support Fund etc. The gloom is there in the downturn in our national economy where the naira has defied their economic logic and continued its free fall. The gloom is compounded by the federal government’s refusal to satisfactorily give account of our collective wealth there by denying states governments their statutory portions and the people the necessary dividends of democracy.

Nigerians are appalled, the atmosphere is uncertain. It is  sad that we have a leadership that has so much divided us along ethnic and religious lines that differences we thought were gone are suddenly appearing and becoming stirring factors in dealing with one another. The labour of our heroes past; those who told us that though tribe and tongue may differ in brotherhood we stand, have since been frustrated because we have a leadership that mocks the leaders of yesterday and deride their contributions to the growth of the nation all because they want to become the ‘founder ‘of a new Nigeria. They have so much elevated sycophancy and deceit to high heavens, that the only thing you need to get their attention is form a group of ‘transformers’ who go about collecting dubious signatures to ‘convince’ a man they knew was going to run to run. We have ‘transformers’ who sing and dance on the grave of thousands of victims of Boko Haram while the transformers we need to power our home are not available.

And that is why the Buhari candidacy is offering something better. It is giving us hope that Nigeria can still be what our forefathers dreamt it to be. The APC has practical records of doing it well, of nurturing hope and bringing joy to people in the states where it hold sways today that the developments in those states are enough campaign about what the party can do. Go to Lagos. Go to Rivers. Go to Kano. Go to Sokoto, Kwara, Edo and other states under the rule of APC and compare the rate of genuine transformations there with what the PDP has been able to do even when they have access to fund better than their counterparts.

GMB is running with these states. GMB is offering the same opportunity for Nigeria at the larger scale. A GMB presidency will bring to bear on the nation the collective contributions of all men of goodwill who desires genuine transformation for this nation, men and women who have seen the lies and deceit of the PDP which in many states have been unable to manage its primaries. Day by day, the PDP is losing the confidence of Nigeria and with the emergence of GMB as candidate of the APC, the tide is turning against the ruling party because Nigerians want real change, not cosmetic projections by armchair economists.

Listen to the words of hope offered by the people’s General:  ý”My nomination is not because I am better than any of the other contestants. I see it as a tribute and mark of confidence to carry the torch as we all join hands to rescue our dear country Nigeria, from those who have led us into the current state of insecurity, poverty, sectarian divide and hopelessness among our people.

What I say today is for all Nigerians: Christian and Muslim, southern and northern, rich and poor, young and old, man and woman. We are all citizens of Nigeria. There is no dividing line among us that I care to honour. Either we advance as one or fail altogether.

My choice and my colleagues’ choice and wish are that we progress together. Preserving the nation’s future is a scared obligation to all of us in this party. Leaders should be wholly committed to fulfilling this obligation otherwise they have no business being leaders. Sadly, the current administration does not believe in this obligation. By their actions they are leading us to calamity.

At international conferences, the Nigerian delegation is usually among the largest but at the same time the least effective. Our president should have the status and the voice of Africa’s largest nation. But in political influence we are among the weakest.”

Finally, Buhari asked: “Shall we continue in a situation where 250 of our daughters have been abducted and the government has been unable to rescue them or provide credible information about what steps they are taking?

“Shall we live in a nation where several people were trampled to death in search of jobs in a stadium and yet no one has taken responsibility for the tragedy?

This is the man for the people, the leader long awaited.

  • Is your home dressed for the season?

Christmas is around the corner and dressing up your homes this time is fun and exciting. Just bring the colours, the bells and festivities together to get into the mood.

Preparing everything in advance is important, so, get into the spirit of the season by decorating your homes. While you are at it, remember to always have a common Christmas theme all over your home. In this case, let your colours go with your theme.

Clean up spaces for your decorations. Detoxify over stuffed corners and put away things that gather dust. Start by accessing the area where you will place your Christmas tree and other decorations.

Clean up your furniture and window blinds and make them ready for a Christmas makeover.

The front door to the living room should be the centre of your decoration. This will invite people to your theme. Since your living area is where you receive people, it should get the most attention. Place flowers that remind you of Christmas all over the house whether they are fresh or artificial.

Place Teddy bears and dolls all over your house, especially if you have children, they look like they are celebrating with you.

You can either group them together or place them around your Christmas tree. It will be more fun if you can dress them in Christmas clothes. Decorate your doors and windows with colourful papers and lights.

Christmas books can be placed on your side tables to commemorate favourite Christmas stories and entertain visitors; likewise picture frames and albums with last year’s Christmas pictures and even more vintage ones.

Your dinning space should not be left out; use bright colours and name it ‘my Christmas dinning set’ for this season. Bring out your best dinnerware because sharing meals with family, friends and guests is the centre of the festivities.

If you do not have one, you can buy a set of red plates to compliment the season.

Red flowers, especially seasonal flowers, are nice for the table. Choose something neutral, but classy. White flowers with silver, or cream with gold, or choose a peacock with turquoise, purple and gold. Add peacock feathers to your flower arrangements for height, and decorate your table with the same jewel colours.

You could also add candles and ornaments such as cones, evergreens, or small fir tree branches. Get the best colourful Christmas napkins you can find, with Christmas bells and decorations drawn on them.

Ribbons could easily be tied, untied and retied to all sorts of items in your house such as chairs, stair-case railings, flower basket handles and door knobs. You could even reuse them another yuletide season. Scented candles could be used to commemorate the mood.

Adorn your trees and shrubs with lights if you have them in your compound. You could hang Christmas lights in your garden, balcony and compound. Not only do they look nice, they make your entire home lovely.

Remember it is supposed to be fun. Keep it simple because simplicity is elegant and beautiful.

  • Season of jail breaks

•In this period of widespread insecurity, there must be zero tolerance for jail breaks

The startling progression of insecurity in the country is unfurling another routine pattern of criminality: the relentless and disconcerting level of jail breaks.

The most recent is the troubling news that not less than 270 of the 323 inmates of the Minna Medium Prison, Niger State, escaped after an attack by six gunmen.

Before this horrific incident was a similar attack on the Federal Prison, Afao-Ekiti Road in Ado- Ekiti, during which another 320 of the 446 inmates escaped.

Not far from memory is also the report in early November that gunmen, armed with grenades and heavy fire arms, attacked the Nigeria Federal Prison in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, freeing over 140 inmates in the process.

Sadly too, yet another prison attack, in Bauchi State, remains a conundrum that still defies noticeable solution till date.

The Minna incident introduced an especially frightening dimension, with the revelation that the freeing of two notorious robbers- Ayo (a.k.a Eze ego), a dismissed Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer, and Osama, convicted in Kebbi and Edo states, and respectively serving jail terms in the prison, were the motive behind the condemnable attack.

Apart from a prison official that was seriously wounded by the rampaging gunmen, they also reportedly carted away arms and bullet proof vests meant for prison warders. The sad occurrence will not be mitigated by subsequent purported re-arrest of about 20 of the escapees barely two hours after the operation.

We ask: What makes the nation’s prisons so vulnerable to attacks?

Dr Peter Ezinwa Ekpendo, Comptroller-General (CG) of prisons, reportedly recommended the reprimand of the comptroller of the prison and at least 58 wardens in the Minna prisons. But beyond this, there is the need to find out how attackers in Ado-Ekiti and elsewhere succeeded in using dynamites to break prison entrance; and why, for some time, successive attacks on prisons usually happened on Sunday nights.

Is this a coincidence or sheer failure of intelligence? Why are our prisons so vulnerable to attacks without any immediate solution?  Why are modern surveillance appliances not the forte of Nigerian antiquated prisons at this contemporary technological period?

The prisons across the federation are witnessing unbelievable security laxity that needs to be urgently addressed. We know that prison officials are badly paid; and the near-relic infrastructure are in near-collapsed shape; thereby putting prison officials under tremendous strain; and undue pressure to bow to temptations of inducement from rich and powerful inmates, capitalizing on these stark inadequacies.

Though this sad reality should not serve as excuse to tolerate possible collusion by prison officials in jail breaks, it just shows the disturbing reality that Nigerian prisons to have become a mirror of the tumbling disarticulation of the Nigerian system, which is a sad commentary on its own.

The nation cannot afford to sit with hands akimbo and allow convicted felons,  yet to serve out their sentences, take over the streets at this period of monumental insecurity, especially in the north eastern part of the country; and not in any part of the country.

The government must do all within its power to apprehend criminal inmates still at large; and who could still cause serious trouble for an already troubled society.

We call for collective efforts of all security agencies to bring back to justice all absconding inmates wherever they might be hiding in the country.

Also, the issue of possible internal complicity should be looked into to unravel the brains behind this dangerous criminal pattern of setting inmates free, as such practice is detrimental to the nation’s national security.

Still, does a government regrettably yet to see the need for long overdue prison reforms have the capacity to achieve this desirable goal?

This is a question that should be quickly addressed because the incessant jail breaks must stop, if this administration wants the people to take it serious.

  • ‘Keep our roads accident-free this season’

‘Keep our roads accident-free this season’

The Ota Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Commander,  Sunday Omafu, has advised motorists to imbibe the culture of defensive driving, urging them to avoid aggression.

He spoke during the Command’s Ember Months’ Campaign, at Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, Ota, Ogun State, tagged “Road safety is a shared responsibility; it depends on you and me”.

He said the FRSC was established to address road crashes which had become a social problem with their attendant miseries to the people.

According to him, many have been killed or maimed while several others have become unproductive.

He said researches have shown that the most potent antidote to these avoidable crashes is ‘attitudinal change’, appealing to Nigerians to double their efforts at being safety conscious.

“To tackle this ugly trend, individuals’ responsibilities must be involved,” he said.

Omafu said all road users have a great role to play to guarantee safety on our roads.

“Drivers should stop reckless driving and avoid turning their vehicles to ‘weapons of mass destruction’. They should use them carefully and courteously on the road.”

Pedestrians, he said, should desist from acts capable of endangering their lives, while motorcyclists should stop competing for the right of way with drivers.

He urged road users to develop the habit of self-respect as doing that would make the roads safer.

The Principal Road Traffic Officer (RTO), Ota Branch of the Vehicle Inspection Department (VIO), Commander Osukoya Paul Kehinde, appealed to motorists to always ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on a journey, urging them to maintain utmost discipline while driving.

He said the only obstacle on the roads during ember months is the attitude of road users, noting that ember months are like other months (January – August).

“There is nothing wrong with the days or months, but the individual’s attitudes need to be changed to end crashes on our roads during the ember months. All road users must change their attitudes by mastering traffic rules and regulations.

Osukoya also urged motorists to follow due process of obtaining drivers’ licence, saying drivers’ licence is the only certificate that qualifies one as a driver.

“The consequence of obtaining drivers’ licence through the back-door, according to him, is incessant crashes. Because such person would not undergo the normal training and he/she would lack adequate knowledge of road/traffic signs,” he said.

He urged the agencies responsible for issuing drivers’ licence such as Board of Internal Revenue, FRSC and VIO to be strict in the issuance of drivers’ licence. Mr. Osukoya said it is a serious offence on the part of any motorist who drives using fake drivers’ licence. Such a person will not only be punished but will also risk a jail term.

The Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Comrade Rotimi Rahmon, also urged motorists to ensure compliance with road safety rules and regulations for their own interest and those of other road users.

He said the incessant crashes on the roads result from negligence on the part of motorists, adding that drinking and driving, over-speeding, overloading, wrong overtaking, making and receiving phone calls while driving and other forms of distraction are major causes of road accidents.

He appealed to commercial drivers’ union to amplify their efforts in monitoring activities of their members in order to ensure safety of lives and properties during the Yuletide period and beyond. He also said the unions should ensure that no alcoholic joint exists within the garages.

Comrade Rahmon appealed to those who trade on the highways to leave and look for a safer place, adding that the highways are accident-prone.

Treasurer, Allied Truck Transporters’ Association of Nigeria (ATTAN), Mr Adeniyi Ayeni urged to both federal and state governments to regulate the system of commercial vehicle operations.

He said the rate men of traffic management agencies extort money from transporters is too high.

He also said lack of genuine spare parts contributes to high rate of crashes on our road.

Present at the event were The Ogun State Sector Commander of FRSC, CC Adegoke Adetunji, zonal Public Education/Enlightenment Officer, ACC Olusegun Ogungbemide, Public Relations Officer, Sango Branch of National Union of Petroleum and Gas (NUPENG), Comrade Adebayo Hassan, Managing Director, Skiddo Foods Limited, Mrs Julia Shinaba, Executive Vice-Chairman, Missak Agency International Limited, Mr Jackie A. Kassim, representative of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Ota Zonal Command, Comrade Salako Solomon, Coordinator, Isaka/Igbala Special Marshal and Partnership, Chief Samuel Ajayi and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ibiok Monday.

Others present were Secretary of ATTAN, Mudashiru Taiwo and Secretary of ACCOMORAN, Miss Kafila Kehinde.
