Onazi set for first Lazio game of season

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Serie A clash against Udinese today, Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has dropped a strong hint that Eddy Onazi is in line to play his first game for the club in the ongoing season.

Despite not being 100 percent fit, the central midfielder was patched up for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with Congo and South Africa.

But at club level, the Nigeria international has only made the substitutes bench on two occasions – against Genoa and Cesena – without tasting action.

“Onazi may also be available almost 100%. He came from the World Cup with an injury and has not played much with us.

“He’s getting in the mechanisms of the team and I think he’s ready to play with his qualities,” said Setafano Pioli.

Eddy Onazi made 29 appearances in the Serie A last term, including 19 starts, while he clocked up 15 appearances in the 2012 – 2013 campaign.

Nwankwo fit for season’s first game

Nigeria midfielder Obiorah Nwankwo has returned to training with his Portuguese club Academica de Coimbra ahead of the season’s opener this weekend after illness.

The former Parma and Inter Milan midfielder has been struggling with malaria for some days, but he looked to have got over the illness as he trained with the rest of the squad on Wednesday morning.

It seems he is ready and will be able to make a contribution to the team in the game against Sporting Lisbon on Saturday at the City of Coimbra Stadium.

The Kaduna-born player has played for Inter Milan, Parma, Gubbio, Padova, CFR Cluj and Cordoba. He has represented Nigeria at U20, U23 and full international levels.

2014/2015 SEASON: Moses’ Chelsea door beckons

Victor Moses may still leave Chelsea as the club are believed to be keen to dispose of the Nigeria international.

While doubts over John Mikel Obi’s future have been cleared, the same cannot be said of his compatriot, Moses, whose future at Stamford Bridge still hangs in the balance.

The London Evening Standard claims that Chelsea are keen to sell the Nigeria international winger, but are struggling to find suitors for the 23-year-old who had a disappointing loan spell at Liverpool last season.

Only West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa have reportedly shown strong interest in the player.

However both sides are only interested in taking the player on loan, whereas Chelsea want an outright sale. Moses has already returned to full training at Cobham, following this summer’s World Cup.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY: Mikel turns spectator in Holland

    • Chelsea hit  Vitesse 3-1

Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel watched from the sidelines as the premiership  side currently on pre-season tour demolished Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 yesterday.

Mikel was pictured along side returnee talisman, Didier Drogba on the bench watching proceedings as teammates Salah, Fabregas and Matic hit target for an elated Jose Mourinho.

The Dutch side could not find the net until late in the match when Djurdjevic found  space in the box to head past Beeney.

The position of Mikel who was part of Stephen Keshi’s squad to the World Cup in Brazil has become talking point in sports circles with some pundits insiting that his level of fitness and effectiveness has taken a drive.  Unlike  some World Cup players who immediately on return became hot cake for some suitors seeking to streghten their squad ahead of new season, the suitors refused to show face for the Nigerian with some insisting that he did not do well enough to attract suitors during the World Wup in which the Eagles crashed in the round of 16.

Pre-season win: Ike Uche scores for Villarreal

Nigerian international, Ikechukwu Uche, was on target for Villarreal in their 2-0 pre-season win over Reus on Saturday.

The former Getafe player grabbed the match opener in the 2nd minute, before Javier Espinosa Gonzalez’s strike fifteen minutes later.

In the second half, the Yellow Submarines made wholesale changes to their line up but failed to add to their tally.

In Finland, Vincent Onovo scored to help FC Inter earn a 3-3 draw at home to highly fancied Helsinki, while Henry Chidozie Ugwunna performed well and was on song in Haka’s 5-0 victory over JIPPO.

Yohan Blake to miss rest of season

Jamaica’s double Olympic sprint silver  medallist Yohan Blake has been ruled out  for the rest of the 2014 season after undergoing surgery on an injured hamstring.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury in the 100 metres at the Glasgow Grand Prix on July 11.

‘Right now he’s on crutches, he had to have an operation a couple of days ago,’ coach Mills said on Tuesday.

‘The injury was quite severe and the original prognosis was misdiagnosed.

‘He went to Germany and when they had a good look, they realised that it was more serious and required surgery, so he’ll be out for quite a long time.’

  • Season of anomie

The Nigerian Leviathan has finally decided to bare his fangs. He has moved from being an emperor to a Leviathan; one in whose temple all must worship or be sacrificed to the political gods of the land. I have always had reservation about operating a one-party state. It is the only reason why I rejoiced when a coterie of relatively weaker parties decided to fuse into one in order to challenge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The resultant All Progressives Congress (APC) was able to attract discontents from the PDP and it appeared the 2015 general elections would not be a stroll in the park for the party that has monopolized the hold on power in the past 15 years. It appeared that the boast that PDP would maintain its hold on the levers of power at all levels for 60 years could be vigorously challenged.

At the time, no one reckoned with what the man in the saddle could do to ensure that power did not slip off. We have since realised that the PDP has enough resolve to decapitate and decimate others and gobble up opposition leaders and democratic institutions. An obvious move has now been made to destabilize the APC. As was the situation during the Obasanjo regime, especially between 2005 and 2007, the Federal Government has now chosen to encourage dissension in the major opposition party and is using impeachment as weapon of enforcing compliance with its diktat.

As was the case under Obasanjo, institutions of state are being subverted and used to hound opponents of the government. Wherever the governor refused to dance to the music supplied from Aso Villa, the Leviathan deploys money and other weapons to suborn the lawmakers on spurious charges and, within a few days, the governor, and possibly his deputy are pushed away from the dais to make room for a quisling. It is a dangerous turn- dangerous for the President, his party and the country. It could be likened to using a hammer to slaughter a fly that perches on the eyelid.

Does the President have the moral right to raise issues with ethical standards in the states? What has he done with the popular quest to bring sanity to bear on the management of our oil revenue? How has he responded to the call for removal of the powerful Oil Minister-Diezani Alison-Madueke? She is being shielded from accounting for how the subsidy money is being expended. And, how has his Attorney General handled the prosecution of cases against former PDP national chairman Vincent Ogbulafor? What improvement has been made in terms of transparency in budgeting and financial management? Why is the country wittingly moving into the debt trap again? Could anyone justify what the money being borrowed is being used for?

While state governors and officials are being persecuted, what example is being set at the federal level? Stella Oduah was indicted in the reckless purchase of two armoured vehicles by the aviation ministry, but rather than make her face the music, she was helped out of the system and presented as a paragon of hard work. The journalists are also being hounded by federal agency. The outlook is indeed ominous.

Our President is desperate. The PDP would stop at nothing to win the next presidential elections and capture the states. The same gale that blew across the land in the Second Republic when the NPN could not read the mood of the nation and deployed federal resources to rake in fake votes from states controlled by the opposition is about being released on the political landscape now. Realising that the North and the discerning and politically conscious Nigerians would do all possible to halt the clueless administration of the man from Otuoke, the President is now resorting to strong-arm tactics. Knowledge of the Nigerian political history would help the President avoid pushing this country off the precipice.

As the Commander-in-Chief, he should also call military tacticians to teach him what happened to all Generals who decided to open too many flanks at the same time. Why would attempting to remove the governors of Rivers, Nasarawa and Edo be considered smart by anyone? Anyone who understands those involved would realise that Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole and Tanko Almakura would not go down like trhe lamb; they are unlikely to yield the other cheek as the PDP deals them slaps on one. They are suave and charismatic. Unwittingly, the President and his men could be setting this house on fire.

The Yoruba talk about the monkey who, trusting its dexterity at prancing from tree to tree decides to jump beyond the leavers of the tree. It finds itself calamitously writhing in pains or broken.

Let the hawks make way for the doves in the cabinet to have the ears of this President.

  • Season of open letters

Some how, this Christmas period has turned out a season of open letter writing. But unlike the usual pleasantries and goodwill messages that have become the hallmark of the season, these letters are largely directed at either getting even with key personages in the nation’s leadership or defending sweeping allegations that have been brought to the court of public opinion.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo fired the first salvo a forthnight ago when in a well publicised letter he accused President Jonathan of sundry misdeeds. The allegations were so weighty that the presidency directed all government functionaries not to comment on it promising that at the appropriate time, Jonathan will respond personally.

Ever since, there have been calls from several quarters for the president to respond to the indicting accusations and innuendos contained in Obasanjo’s letter.

Of all the allegations bandied by Obasanjo against Jonathan, two stood out in terms of their seriousness and overall impact for the peace, order and good conduct of governmental affairs in this country. These are the allegation that Jonathan was keeping 1000 people on political watch list, training snipers and other armed personnel secretly for political purposes like Abacha and in the same place Abacha trained his own killers. The other is the alleged non-remittance of about $7billion from the NNPC to the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN accruing from oil exports which Obasanjo said was further reinforced by the letter written by the CBN governor to the president on the matter.

The presidency has reacted to the first allegation asking Obasanjo to produce evidence of the training of snipers and killers especially since he claims to know where they are being trained. They are saying that the onus is now on Obasanjo to show evidence of this very dangerous allegation that is laden with vile innuendos.

For now, Obasanjo is yet to respond to this challenge. He may be hiding under the cover of such terms as “allegation” and “if it is true” which dominated the text of his letter. But that raises serious question on the motivation and intention of Obasanjo in making public weighty and destructive allegations even when he is yet to verify them. What of the suggestions that the training is taking place in the same institutions that a military dictator, Abacha trained his own killers? The purport of the comparison between Jonathan with Abacha given the sad end of that dictator may not be lost on very discerning people. It was therefore very uncharitable for Obasanjo to have gone public with such tendentious comparison if he was only relying on hearsay.

The other bothering on non-remittance of oil money has been substantially addressed by the same CBN governor when he said at the senate public hearing that the conclusion that $49.8 billion was missing is wrong. According to him, the letter he wrote to the president on the matter was an invitation to probe remittances to the Federation Account. He said that relevant agencies have commenced reconciling their accounts with about $12 billion still outstanding. With this clarification, we are inching closer to deodorizing the foul air generated by Obasanjo’s false and self-serving alarm.

Obasanjo’s letter has also attracted other letters from some of the personages he maligned. Politician and businessman Buruji Kashamu in his own letter has told whoever cares to hear that the aspersions cast on his person by Obasanjo’s letter cannot fly. He said that he is neither a convict nor a drug baron but a political son of Obasanjo. He recounted how Obasanjo used him to fight former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel and wrested the structures of the PDP from him for he (Obasanjo’s) political advantage. He queried why it is now he is seen to be close to Jonathan that Obasanjo is realizing he is not a good person after introducing him into politics and using him to achieve his selfish ends. Obasanjo still has questions to answer in respect of the claims of Kashamu.

But as if this was not enough, a letter purportedly written by Obasanjo’s first daughter Iyabo in which she described her father in unprintable words calling him a manipulator and two-faced hypocrite determined to foist on President Jonathan what no one would contemplate with him as president came into public domain. She among others accused her father of having an egoistic craving for power and living a life where only men of low esteem and intellect thrive.

Though Obasanjo is yet to comment on the existence of the letter, former Ogun State governor Segun Osoba confirmed that Iyabo had complained to him along the lines of the issues raised in the letter and he made Obasanjo aware of it then.

Before this article is published, we may be treated with some other open letters. But more fundamentally, most of the issues raised in these open letters have thrown doubts on the credibility and propriety of Obasanjo to author the damning letter on the Jonathan administration. The letter from his daughter says it all. Even as Jonathan is yet to respond to the moral issues and moral authority of Obasanjo to lampoon his regime in the way he did, most of the reactions have been unanimous in the verdict that Obasanjo lacks the moral bearing to accuse Jonathan of the alleged misdeeds since his regime had a surfeit of them. Those with patronizing views would want the nation to take the message and throw away the messenger. But for a greater majority, both the message and the messenger should be consigned to the nearest trash can.

It smacks of crass dishonesty for Obasanjo to pretend he is not aware the party’s national chairman acts at the behest of the president when during his regime he forced out at least two national chairmen and replaced them at will. Obasanjo cannot claim ignorance of the fact that he determined who should contest what position at all levels of election in all the states. If there are reverses which the party currently suffers, their foundation were laid by Obasanjo and if that party and democracy collapse he should assume full responsibility.

Obasanjo said he wants nothing from Jonathan as God has been very kind to him. He positions himself as a patriot whose motivations should be seen from their altruistic value. But this claim cannot fly in the face of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. A patriot will hesitate to bandy speculative allegations that can destroy his country if he is not moved by reasons that are less than noble. A patriot will not play God by talking down on the Ijaw ethnic group even when the nation’s resources are tapped from their backyard. It is not true that he wants nothing from Jonathan. He wants power. He is propelled by vaulting ambition to be the greatest Nigerian that has ever lived even when his ascendancy to power was largely accidental and opportunistic. And that is why he wants to control everything, anything. Now he is being consigned to the political dustbin for overrating his political relevance, the centre will no longer hold. That cannot qualify as an attribute of a patriot.

    • We’re not done yet – Abimbola Samuel

Prime Football Club has stated their readiness ahead of the new season as the technical crew at the weekend named its final 30-man squad ahead of the 2013/2014 Nigeria National League.

The chief coach of the Omoluabi Giants, Abimbola Samuel expressed confidence in a statement signed by the club’s spokesman, Tunde Shamsudeen.

The gaffer said the quality of players at the team’s disposal will help the club to secure one of the promotion tickets to the Globacom Premier League.

Abimbola, a former Flying Eagles assistant coach, said he and his assistants have no excuses of not getting the needed results desired. He stated further that the confidence shown to him and his assistants by the management, supporters and the good people of the State of Osun will not be regretted as the team has started getting its rhythm.

“We have the support of the chairman, the board members, the supporters and the good people of the state and I think this will be a season of happiness for Prime.”

However, the former Sunshine Stars merchant tactician, has hinted that much more work needs to be done with the 30-man squad he has listed.

The Ogun State-born disciplinarian, said his squad isn’t done yet for the new season, that his crew is working on the unity of the team.
