  • Life for an ‘international terrorist’

    Life for an ‘international terrorist’

An uncouth child, untrained and untrainable, is fated to a harsh tutorial outside — Yoruba saying.

It was “Six for the PM” (September 9): Simon Ekpa’s terrorism conviction in Finland.  Now, it’s “Life for an ‘international terrorist’”:Nnamdi Kanu’s life jail for terrorism, on November 20.

As Ekpa’s Finland canning, it’s Nigeria’s renunciation of atavistic savagery, veiled as self-determination.  Any polity, ruled by law, logic and decency, has no other way.

So, if some South East elite still huff and puff; and the ignorant hoi polloi spewing emotive rubbish — both on X and allied social media — can’t still see the clear folly of terror tactics clothed as “self determination”, then the cruel joke is on them.

Even if the rest of Nigeria, victims of Kanu’s violent ethnic chauvinism, decide to “move on” (and that is far from certain!), what of his fellow Igbo: from Orsu, Ozubulu, Agulu, Orlu, Okigwe and Arondizuogu, hacked and slain by Kanu and his IPOB/ESN terrorists?

Their lives are worth nothing, so long as Kanu and co-criminals claim they shed their blood to water a neo-Biafra — a neo-Biafra where the Igbo, under whatever guise, are free to slaughter fellow Igbo? How long will such an enclave even last, before sinking in its own violent contradictions?

Besides, the South East elite should explain: how a rogue Eastern Security Network, busy devouring its own, thrived; and the Ebube Agu (Igbo for “Fear/aura/glory of a lion”) hardly made it beyond the conception slate, despite the opening salvo of ex-Ebonyi Governor, David Umahi?

Indeed, Ebube Agu, a regional security bloc, was to the South East, what Amotekun (Yoruba for Leopard, but formally: the Western Nigeria Security Network) is to the South West; just as the numerous Joint Civilian Task Force (JCTF) cadres are to the North — already integrated into that region’s anti-terrorism/banditry security buffer.

So, the South East orchestrated anguish, loud and tactless, echoes the opening quote of this piece: a child with no home training is yoked to a shattering lesson outside.

That essentially is the Kanu tragedy: loud, rude, uncouth, cocky and insufferable!  He just birthed where he belongs.  Good riddance!

So, those claiming his jailing is tantamount to jailing the entire Igbo are entitled to their self-deceit. They should walk their talk, though: join him in the slammer!

Besides, has it ever happened anywhere: that a docked person would bawl at his trial judge: “Omotoso, show me the law!”? — and all that from what has turned out to be no more than combative ignorance?  In the open court too!  What heresy!

Now if after, the South East elite still deign to muster such indignation at a criminal getting his glaring desert, they must accept they have been horrible “parents”, that unleashed such a horrible — nay, evil! — “child”, on their entire Nigerian “neighbours”.

Instead of this empty blather and bluster, they should show contrition and — pronto — apologize to other Nigerians!

Indeed, for an elite ever eager to clamber on tales of victimhood, they show pretty little sensitivity on how, by their reckless jibes, they routinely bruise others.

Which takes the matter to another post-jail campaign: instant mercy and pardon — an unthinking call, after the illogical pre-trial thunder: “Release Kanu unconditionally!” Isn’t it sheer lunacy to do exactly the same thing, yet expect a different result?

Even if you were to credibly beg for Kanu, where would you begin?

The courts whose sedate practitioners he throatily traduced, in his empty attempt to subdue?  Remember these four Justices: Ahmed Mohammed, John Tsoho, Binta Nyako and James Omotoso, all sitting as justices of the Federal High Court, Abuja?

Kanu bludgeoned three out of the four to recuse themselves.  Justice Omotoso, that eventually convicted him, was patient and long-suffering to defeat Kanu’s stalling tactics.  Even then, he cursed, yelled and growled at the judge like some mad dog!

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, Kanu’s prosecutor-in-chief?  He insulted him twice  — first, with Justice Nyako; and after with Justice Omotoso, after Kanu’s unruly conduct earned him expulsion from the courtroom on judgment day!

Yet, the same court, peopled by same jurists, will handle his appeal, after his crude boast that no court could convict him!

The security agents that he goaded his goons, via his insane EndSARS broadcasts in 2020, to go slaughter during the EndSARS riots?

The sitting President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose alleged assets he told his IPOB thugs in Lagos to go raze, or possibly kill him if they could get him?

The late President Muhammadu Buhari, a proud son of the North who, when ill, Kanu’s evil tongue floated the morbid lie that he had “died”; and that the “clone” that made it back as President was some Jubril of Sudan?

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), who he cursed, dubbed his church a “Yoruba church” and  every Igbo that worshipped there, an “imbecile”?

Will Lagos ever forget the evil of the atavistic savage that incited an IPOB mob to set on fire its historic monuments and landmarks, aside razing a new fleet of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses — among other investments Lagos made to ease life for his fellow Igbo and other ethnics in the Lagos cosmopolis?

Will the Igbo ever tolerate a non-Igbo savage, direct his co-savages to go on an arson spree, on the Igbo cherished landmarks, in the Igbo homestead?  That’s what Kanu did to Lagos — and jail is where he eternally belongs!

Indeed, which section of Nigeria has Kanu not profaned?  Where will this so-called “political solution” issue from — his rogue exceptionalism that because he is Igbo, and he’s fighting for Biafra, so he can destroy others’ lives and livelihoods, and walk free?

How would that even sound with victims in Kanu’s Igbo homeland: Miracle Nwobodo, Dr. Chike Akunyili, medic and spouse of the late but impactful Dora Akunyili, and the Army couple, Gloria Matthew and her beau, Linus Musa Audu, humiliated, beheaded and desecrated by IPOB, among thousands of nameless others?  And Ahmed Gulak, will Adamawa ever forget?

Again, those who continue to mouth “injustice against Kanu” can enjoy their wilful lies.  But even his lawyers knew he had absolutely no defence for his terrorist acts — so did Kanu himself.  Thus, their stalling tactics that dragged the case for 10 years.

Fittingly on judgment day, his loose tongue nailed him — and spectacularly so.  Indeed, had Justice Omotoso handed down the death penalty, that tongue would have handed the authorities a long rope to hang the condemned.

All of a sudden, the scriptures become so haunting: it’s the nonsense you spew that nails you, not the chaff you eat! The blood of his IPOB/ESN victims cried for justice –and secured judgment.

Let the lifer endure his life jail.  But that’s even his least worries.  The blood of his terror victims cry, will taunt him and challenge him for the rest of his life.  It’s hard, lonely, miserable road to travel!

DSS files terrorism charges against nine IPOB commanders linked to Simon Ekpa

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed terrorism charges against seven commanders of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) linked to Simon Ekpa before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Its Deputy Director Public Relations and Strategic Communications Favour Dozie dropped the hint in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, in the three separate cases, FHC/ABJ/CR/632/2025; FHC/ABJ/CR/633/2025 and FHC/ABJ/CR/634/2025, filed on 19 November, the seven suspects were accused of receiving funds and other material support from Simon Ekpa and other foreign-based members of IPOB.

The statement reads: “A key suspect, Ibrahim Ali Larabo, accused of terrorism financing, is an illegal immigrant from the Republic of Niger, operating a Bureau de Change (BDC) without a licence.

“He provided financial services for the Simon Ekpa-led proscribed group, receiving and disbursing large sums of money for IPOB terrorism activities in the Southeast.

“The suspects were established to be IPOB commanders, arms dealers/couriers, ESN fighters, and foot soldiers funded and directed by Simon Ekpa, who has been convicted of terror-related charges and sentenced to six years imprisonment in Finland.

“Also, the DSS has successfully prosecuted Ismaila a.k.a Mai Tangaran, the terrorist who coordinated the 2012 attacks on the IPolice Headquarters in Bompai, Kano State and other critical facilities, resulting in many injuries.

“Ismaila was convicted and sentenced by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The trial, which began in 2017, ended on 18 November when Justice Nwite pronounced his verdict.

“Ismaila, one of the leaders of the Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP), was convicted on the four-count charge brought against him by the Department of State Services(DSS) under the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013.

“Justice Nwite sentenced him to 15 years in relation to count one and 20 years on counts two, three and four. The sentences are to run concurrently.”

According to statement, the DSS had earlier filed cases against two internationally-wanted terror suspects – Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Mamuda) and Abubakar Abba (aka Abu Baara) – whose trial will resume before Justice Nwite (of the Federal High Court in Abuja) on 15 January 2026.

“The prosecution of Khalid Al Barnawi, accused of being the mastermind of the UN complex bombing on 26 August 2011. Al-Barnawi continues. Barnawi, alongside four others, is being prosecuted for his involvement in the bombing.

“Five others are arraigned on a nine-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja in suit FHC/ABJ/CR/301/2025 over their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

“Equally, being prosecuted by the DSS are 10 suspects arrested in connection with attacks in Benue and Plateau states. The suspects were arrested following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to apprehend the perpetrators.

“Also to be arraigned are the recaptured Abdulazeez Obadaki (aka Bomboy), believed to be an internationally known ISWAP leader, who confessed to having masterminded attacks on St Francis Catholic, Owo and Deeper Life Church, Okene and one Musa Abubakar, a key manufacturer and supplier of arms and ammunition, who was arrested in Plateau State.

“The DG-DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, upon assuming office in August 2024, ordered the review of all the cases he inherited. He also directed that forensic investigations be conducted on these cases to aid diligent prosecution in accordance with Nigerian laws.”

  • Southeast residents point way forward after Ekpa’s sentence

Southeast residents point way forward after Ekpa’s sentence

The jail sentence clamped down on Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, in Finland, has triggered mixed reactions in the Southeast.

While some are calling for the same treatment to be meted out to his fellow Biafran anarchist and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigerian government, others argue that they both should be hanged.

Ekpa was recently handed a six-year jail term by the Finnish court for terrorism and activities fueling violence in Nigeria’s Southeast. Kanu, on the other hand, is being prosecuted for related activities by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In the wake of Ekpa’s sentencing, many residents of the Southeast have stated that it will take time for Igbo land to recover from the devastating effects of the Monday sit-at-home, kidnapping and killings introduced by Kanu and Ekpa into the region.

Consequently, many have called for more decisive action to be taken against Kanu, hoping it would serve as a deterrent to others inclined to emulate him. Yet some others have called for his release, for peace to return to the region.

For instance, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, one of the leaders in the Southeast, told The Nation that he is of the belief that Kanu will be released by President Bola Tinubu soon.

He said, now that Ekpa has been jailed by the Finnish government, President Tinubu should release Kanu to bring everlasting peace, and added that the Igbo must exercise a little patience and have more trust in Tinubu’s administration.

Elizabeth Odili also argued that Ekpa was the major culprit terrorising the Southeast and not Kanu, and thus Kanu should be set free, she said.

But another resident, who simply identified himself as Engineer Johnson, disagreed with Odili, stating that the ongoing crisis of insecurity in the Southeast was caused by Kanu, before Ekpa joined the fray. According to him, Kanu does not deserve pity.

“Both Kanu and Ekpa deserve to be killed because they have brought sorrow, pain and agony to many homes in the Southeast,” he said.

    Ebonyi: Disquiet in Ekpa’s community

There has been disquiet in the Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area (LGA) following the jail term handed to Ekpa by the Finnish.

When The Nation visited his Ngbo community, residents refused to speak to the news medium, for fear of being attacked.

However, an indigene, James Odom, said there are mixed feelings in the community over Ekpa’s imprisonment.

He recalled that Ekpa was born a Prince into the family of the late Traditional Ruler in the community, Ekpa Nwangbo.

Odom, one of Ekpa’s kinsmen, described the court’s action as “a welcome development.”

He noted that it should serve as a lesson for Ndi Igbo and others who may attempt to pursue liberation through violence.

According to Odom, Ekpa, once regarded as a promising son of Ngbo, came from a reputable family.

“His father was a complete gentleman who stood for truth and justice throughout his lifetime. Simon, himself, started well, helping people from our community and beyond.

“Many who travelled abroad did so through his assistance, and some are still on scholarship in his name,” he said.

However, he lamented that Ekpa later derailed, making “inciting and dangerous statements” that fueled insecurity across the Southeast.

He recalled calling on community leaders to intervene, adding that many traditional chiefs were too scared to act because of the “boys who allegedly worked for him.”

“Each time he talked, his words threatened the relative peace our people were enjoying. We lost great men and women because of his actions.

“So many businesses were shut down, and investors fled the Southeast due to the insecurity he created,” Odom stated.

He further narrated the devastating impact of the crisis, saying that a lot of children have been rendered fatherless and more women have been widowed as a result of Ekpa’s actions.

“Now, the monster he helped to create has outgrown him, and people are still afraid to walk freely in the Southeast,” he added.

While acknowledging the widespread discontent with Nigeria’s structure, Odom emphasised that independence or justice cannot be achieved by “killing our own people.”

Looking ahead, he expressed hope that Ekpa’s jail term in Finland will give him time to reflect.

“We pray he comes out a changed man. Let this be a lesson to all of us,” he concluded.

Anambra: Kanu started well until power corrupted him

A veteran journalist, Uche Okafor, commended the Finnish authorities for the judgment, but said the jail term was not commensurate with his offences.

“The lesson here is that his followers should know that his life is at risk. Some of them who disrupt activities in the region under the guise of sit-at-home should know that if they’re caught, their condition will be worse.

“They should have a rethink, particularly in Anambra, where Soludo has urged them to return for rehabilitation.

“You can see the people are happy. For Kanu, he should face judgment because you can’t rule out the fact that he’s culpable to an extent,” he said.

A cleric, Chijioke Nwokeke, expressed joy over the judgment, saying the level of insecurity has reduced in the zone.

“I thought they would have extradited him to Nigeria to suffer for his deadly activities, which brought serious chaos.

“You’ll notice that the tension in Southeast has reduced, no thanks to his jail term. If you ask me, they should have added more years to his sentence.

“Nnamdi Kanu was more civilised in his approach. But like the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

“He started well, but along the line, the power entered his head. But his can’t still be compared with Ekpa. But I think his release will bring relative peace to the region.

A lecturer, who simply identified himself as Victor, said the judgment might trigger insecurity in the region as some of his followers might try to react with the intention to save their boss.

“On the other hand, it may douse tension. It depends on how both federal and state governments handle it.

“There’s a need for political intelligence so it doesn’t escalate like Boko Haram in the North and insurgency in the Southsouth,” he adde

Enugu: Inclusive government, solution in Igboland

Residents of Enugu have said that the conviction of Ekpa in Finland will not bring an end to the agitation for Biafra, insisting that only inclusive politics and the elimination of long-standing feelings of marginalisation can calm separatist sentiments in the Southeast.

In interviews across the city, many residents acknowledged that Ekpa’s sit-at-home orders and threats from abroad deepened insecurity and crippled local economies. However, they argued that his fall has not erased the deeper grievances of neglect, poor infrastructure, and lack of federal presence in the region.

At Ogbete Main Market, Ifeoma Eze, a trader, said: “People are happy that this man has been stopped because he caused us suffering. But Biafra agitation is not just about him. Our children need jobs, our roads are bad, and our region is not treated fairly. Until that changes, the agitation will continue in another form.”

For Chukwuma Ani, a lawyer, the solution lies in political inclusion. “The Igbo need stronger representation at the centre. The solution is not to silence agitators but to address the reasons why they gain followers: marginalisation, lack of federal appointments, and neglect of our infrastructure,” he noted.

A university student, Amara Nwachukwu, added that young people want to feel hopeful about their future. “Most of my mates just want opportunities. If we see government investing in our region and creating jobs, there won’t be a need for all these agitations,” she said.

Similarly, a commercial bus driver, Peter Okafor, said residents are tired of violence but fear new groups could emerge. “We want peace, but peace comes when people feel carried along. If nothing changes, another Ekpa will rise tomorrow,” he warned.

Analysts argued that Ekpa’s conviction may weaken IPOB’s diaspora network but also offers an opening for Southeast leaders to work with the federal government in redirecting the agitation from violence to dialogue and development.

For many residents, the consensus is clear: ending separatist agitation requires building an inclusive Nigeria where no region feels left out.

Abia: Nigerian judges should emulate Finnish judiciary

Residents of Abia State have tasked Nigerian judges to emulate their Finnish counterparts in executing judgments following the sentencing of the factional leader of IPOB, Ekpa.

Some of the respondents described Ekpa’s sentencing as a victory in the war against insecurity in the Southeast.

Chukwu Bartholomew, for instance, told The Nation that, “For us in the Southeast, Ekpa’s imprisonment is very good for democracy, although the sentencing is too short, compared to the level of carnage and atrocities Biafran agitators have caused in the region.

“The Federal Government should activate their bilateral relationship with Finland so that it can extradite Ekpa to Nigeria for a proper trial in the country, where his actual crime was committed.”

  • Simon Ekpa’s conviction

    Simon Ekpa’s conviction

A victory for the anti-terrorism war for which the Fed Govt deserves commendation

Since 2021, Simon Ekpa, the Finland- based 40-year-old terrorist who had been coordinating attacks on innocent Nigerians and security agents in the South East, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. He consistently incited violence and called for Biafran secession.

He probably thought he was immune from arrest and prosecution since he was based abroad.

However, the long arms of the law in an increasingly interdependent world has finally caught up with him, as a district court in his country of abode found him guilty of inciting violence and provoking terrorism in Nigeria.

This is triumph for the rule of law.

For almost one decade, the South East has been boiling, with many killed and maimed, schools and shops shut every Monday, government facilities attacked and razed, while minds of the people were turned against the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Had he been caught and brought to justice in Nigeria, he would have been charged with treason that would have attracted the death penalty.

But then, it could have taken so many years to prosecute. His erstwhile leader, Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is still being tried.

Ekpa’s matter came up for hearing in Finland on May 30, and had been concluded before the end of June. On September 1, the three judges who heard the case sentenced him to a six-year jail term. This, hopefully, would serve as deterrence to those who think they could escape justice by switching jurisdiction.

READ ALSO: North frantic about 2027

The main victims of the Ekpa campaign are innocent people brainwashed that no force could contain the fire he had helped to ignite and kept aflame. Many of them lost their lives, many children were made orphans and school children missed external examinations, thus prolonging their education journeys.

Propaganda on Radio Biafra and activities of the IPOB foot soldiers have subsided since the terror kingpin was arrested by the Finnish authorities, thus giving hope that insurgency on the Nigerian eastern flank would eventually peter out.

But, government has a duty to ensure that substantial action is taken on the root cause of the aberrant behaviour. While it could be said that there could be no justification for citizens to take up arms against the government and embark on wanton killing of others, those recruited to join the crusade were easily cajoled by a perceived persecution and marginalisation.

This general feeling among the people has to be countered by activities of government in terms of appointments and distribution of amenities. Whereas the Federal Government has consistently insisted that it is not working against any section of the country, propaganda can only be suppressed by sensitisation of the people to the truth and the consequences of joining forces against the country.

The Federal Government deserves commendation for the role it played in supplying facts and documents that aided the prosecution and conviction of Ekpa. The Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and his officials left no one at home and in Finland in doubt that nothing other than a conviction would serve the end of justice. This should serve others in the same boat with an indication of what awaits them if they continue travelling the same route.

However, the fact that the action against Mazi Kanu is still pending before the Supreme Court does not speak well of the Nigerian Judicial System. Despite the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan shortly before he left office in 2015, justice remains generally delayed in the country. There are matters pending before the courts for almost one decade, and many even appear to have been forgotten as they no longer come up for mention in the courts.

This is unacceptable in a democracy.

The Bola Tinubu administration has taken a major step in motivating the judicial lords to faithfully discharge their responsibility, but the structure ought to be reviewed in the same way that he handled the system in Lagos when he was governor.

Mr Ekpa may be in jail now, but he still has followers who believe in him. Besides, individuals could easily be replaced by organisations if urgent steps are not taken to dismantle the cells in Nigeria and root out those who had teamed up with him to torment the people.

At a time when virtually all parts of the country are affected by various forms of insecurity, it must be noted that the fight should not be left for the armed forces only. All hands must be on deck to stem all forms of terrorism in the East, West, North and South.

Fed Govt hails six-year jail for Simon Ekpa in Finland

For pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, the end  came yesterday. The Päijät-Häme district court in Finland  sentenced him  to six years in prison for terrorism offences.

In a judgment delivered, the court found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist group.

Acording to Yle, a Finnish newspaper, the court said Ekpa had used his “significant social media following” to stoke tensions in the Southeast  between August 2021 and November 2024.

In a unanimous ruling, the three-member panel of judges also stated that Ekpa was an influential member of a militant separatist movement whose goal was to actualise the carving out of a Biafra state from Nigeria.

The district court also noted that Ekpa had supplied certain groups with weapons, explosives, and ammunition “through his network of contacts in the region, and he was also found to have encouraged his followers on social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria”.

The court also convicted Ekpa of aggravated tax fraud and violating the provisions of the Attorneys Act.

Ekpa is a self-acclaimed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

After Kanu was extradited to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021, Ekpa was appointed as the lead broadcaster of Radio Biafra.

Weeks later, IPOB announced Ekpa’s dismissal, citing his refusal to sign the rules of engagement of Radio Biafra.

The development strained the relationship between IPOB and Ekpa, with the Finland-based lawyer going on to form a splinter secessionist group.

The separatist used his social media platforms, especially X, to issue sit-at-home directives in the South-east geopolitical zone, while calling for attacks on security operatives.

On numerous occasions, IPOB distanced itself from the activities and directives of Ekpa.

In November 2024, Ekpa was arrested by law enforcement in Finland.

He was subsequently sent to prison by the district court for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media”.

In March 2025, the Federal Government designated Ekpa a “terrorism financier”.

    Fed Govt, CDS  hail Finland

The Federal Government  and Chief of Defence Staff(CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa yesterday celebrated what they described as the landmark judgment  which sentenced the self-styled pro-Biafra agitator, to six years’ imprisonment.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris described the ruling as a watershed for counterless innocent Nigerians whose lives and livelihood had been impacted negatively by Ekpa’s activities.

Musa, in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, said the ruling reinforced the principle that perpetrators of terrorism would face justice regardless of their location.

According to him, this judgment sends a strong message that there is no safe haven for individuals or groups who sponsor or encourage acts of terror against Nigeria or any other sovereign state.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria commend the Finnish authorities for their diligence in ensuring that justice is served,” Gen Musa said.

The Federal Government therefore urged those who have been influenced by the convicted self- acclaimed agitator to carry arms against their fatherland to immediately lay them down and embrace the path of peace.

Idris  stressed that Nigeria is big enough for all its people, but there can be no progress where violence and division prevail.

He stated: “This ruling stands as a watershed moment – not only for the countless innocent Nigerians whose lives and livelihoods have been brutally disrupted by the reign of terror incited and financed by Ekpa and his collaborators—but also for the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Finland.

“For years, Ekpa’s reckless incitement and orchestration of violence through IPOB terror activities unleashed unspeakable pain: families shattered, businesses destroyed, children orphaned, and entire communities forced to live under fear. Hundreds of lives were lost, and many more maimed, in pursuit of a destructive and unlawful agenda that sought to undermine the peace, unity, and sovereignty of our nation.

“By upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served, the Finnish judiciary has not only vindicated Nigeria’s consistent position on this matter but also sent a clear signal to extremists everywhere that the world is watching, and justice will catch up with those who seek to destabilize societies through terror.

“The Tinubu administration remains unshakable in its resolve to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and protect the dignity of every citizen. We will continue to mobilize every resource, diplomatic, military, and judicial, to preserve the peace, unity, and territorial integrity of our country.

“We urge all those who, under the misguidance of Simon Ekpa and others, have taken up arms against their fatherland to immediately lay them down and embrace the path of peace. Nigeria is big enough for all its people, but there can be no progress where violence and division prevail.

“The Federal Government also extends its profound gratitude to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the security and intelligence agencies, and the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Police, whose sacrifices, courage, and commitment continue to secure our homeland in the face of daunting challenges. Their service and the resilience of the Nigerian people remain the backbone of our enduring unity.”

“As we mark this turning point, the Federal Government enjoins all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to work together for national unity, peace, and security of the country, ”Idris said.

The CDS hailed Nigerian security, intelligence, law enforcement agencies and diplomats for their “unwavering collaboration” in providing actionable evidence that led to Ekpa’s conviction.

He added that the success highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational threats.

Gen. Musa reaffirmed the armed forces’ resolve to continue working with global partners to dismantle terrorist networks and ensure lasting peace across Nigeria.

He also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and support security agencies in the ongoing fight against insurgency and violent separatist movements.

In January,  Gen  Musa, said the arrest of Simon Ekpa by the Finnish government has helped to reduce tension in the South-east .

He  made this claim while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence to defend the budget of his armed forces.

AGF Fagbemi: Govt will take necessary actions

    • From Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) has expressed delight over the conviction of one of the leaders of the proscribed separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa by a court in Finland.

Fagbemi, in a statement yesterday, said the Federal Government will take  appropriate actions upon the receipt and understudying a certified true copy (CTC) of the judgment of the Finish court.

He said: “We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court.

“His conviction for the charges of terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the Southeast.

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigerian in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration.

“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgment of the court.”

‘It’s his burden, IPOB won’t carry it’

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday  distanced itself from  Ekpa.

It described his conviction as his own burden.

A statement by the group’s Spokesperson, Emmanuel Powerful,  said Ekpa had told the Finnish court that he is not a member of IPOB but a ‘content creator’.

Powerful said before the arrest and trial of Ekpa in Finland, he disowned IPOB and vowed to ‘destroy the organisation’.

“IPOB, under oath in a Finnish court, testified that Simon Ekpa has never held any position in IPOB or ESN,” the statement reads.

“Ekpa created his own parallel contraptions: ‘Biafra Government in Exile’, ‘Biafra Liberation Army (BLA),” and “Biafra Defence Force (BDF)’ — entities repudiated and condemned by IPOB

“Any narrative linking Ekpa’s personal downfall to IPOB is therefore deliberate misinformation — a calculated lie, knowingly repeated to deceive.

“Simon Ekpa’s conviction is his burden and his alone. IPOB will never carry it.”

Powerful added that Ekpa’s conviction should not be used as a plot to ‘contaminate’ the ruling on the no-case submission filed by Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Ekpa is the self-acclaimed disciple of Kanu. He fell out with IPOB after Kanu was extradited to Nigeria from Kenya in June 2021.

After the relationship between Ekpa and IPOB turned sour, the Finland-based agitator formed a splinter secessionist group.

On numerous occasions, IPOB had distanced itself from the activities and directives of Ekpa.

Finnish Court sentences Simon Ekpa to six years in prison

Päijät-Häme District Court on Monday slammed a six-year prison term on Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed Biafra agitator.

Ekpa, who is based in Finland, was found guilty of terrorism-related charges.

The long-term Lahti resident and one-time councillor in the Finnish city faced a long list of charges, including participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly inciting crimes for terrorist purposes.

The court ruled that Ekpa had participated in a terrorist organisation and publicly incited crimes for terrorist purposes.

The charges relate to Ekpa’s alleged activities aimed at re-establishing an independent state in the Biafra region.

In its verdict, the court said that Ekpa had used his significant social media following to stoke tensions in the Biafra region between August 2021 and November 2024.

It added that Ekpa was an influential member of a Biafran separatist movement, which established armed groups aimed at bringing about Biafran independence by force.

The District court’s ruling further noted that Ekpa had supplied these groups with weapons, explosives, and ammunition through his network of contacts in the region, and he was also found to have encouraged his followers on social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria.

Ekpa, a long-term resident of Lahti and one-time local councillor, committed the crimes from the Finnish city, the verdict added, which gives the Finnish court jurisdiction in the case.

Ekpa had denied all the charges in court. Born in the South-East, he moved to Finland in 2007 as an athlete.

The court on Monday also convicted him of aggravated tax fraud.

Though the district court’s verdict is not final, meaning it can be appealed to a higher court.

    • It’s business as usual in Ebonyi as markets open

A six year jail term in Finland awaits self- styled prime minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, if the court now trying him for alleged terrorism in that country accedes to the request of his prosecutors.

Ekpa, who was arrested last November by the Finnish authorities, appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court yesterday to face terrorism-related charges in a preparatory hearing.

His court appearance coincided with the fresh sit at home in the South East called by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra ( MASSOB), to mark ‘Biafra Day’.

Social and economic activities were grounded in many parts of Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo states more for fear of attack by miscreants who might want to enforce the protest than in obedience to the organisers.

But residents of Ebonyi defied the call to sit at home. It was business as usual across the state as people went about their activities.

Finnish prosecutors accuse Ekpa of participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly inciting crimes for terrorist purposes.

They also allege that he has been actively involved in a separatist movement seeking independence for Biafra.

According to them, the accused person’s activity, conducted online and coordinated from Finland, may constitute terrorism under Finnish law.

They claim to have a lot of evidence against him and are demanding a six-year prison sentence for him.

Said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala: “We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications.”

The prosecution, however, said obtaining detailed information about the alleged terrorism-related acts was difficult, as they took place in Africa.

Ekpa’s lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, raised concerns about the reliability of information coming from Nigeria.

Finnish police have investigated the case together with Nigerian authorities.

During police interrogation, Ekpa denied the charges, including suspicions of ordering weapons for pro-Biafra groups.

The district court is also examining allegations of aggravated tax fraud.

Ekpa moved to Finland in 2007 as an athlete. He has been a member of the National Coalition Party (NCP) and served on Lahti’s public transport board.

IPOB disowns him; says he’s not one of us

However, IPOB yesterday sought to distance itself from Ekpa and claimed that he was not a member of the group.

It claimed that Ekpa himself had identified himself to the Finnish court as a ‘content creator’ rather than a freedom fighter or a representative of IPOB.

It described as fraudulent and malicious any attempt to link Ekpa’s actions to IPOB.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the decision of the Finnish authorities—undoubtedly influenced by the British Foreign Office—to schedule the trial of Simon Ekpa on May 30, a sacred day for Biafrans when we honour the memory of our five million martyrs murdered during the genocidal war against our people,” it said in a statement.

“This provocative timing is not a coincidence. It is a carefully calculated insult designed to mock our pain, distort our history, and distract from the continued illegal detention and persecution of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Let it be made unequivocally clear: Simon Ekpa is NOT a member of IPOB. He has been publicly disowned by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu himself.

“During his court appearance in Finland, Ekpa described himself as a “content creator”—not a freedom fighter, not a representative of IPOB, and certainly not a defender of the Biafra cause.

“Any attempt by foreign or Nigerian media to link his actions to IPOB is fraudulent, lazy and malicious.”

Biafra Day protests shut down Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo

Social and economic activities in many parts of these states were paralysed yesterday by the sit at home declared by IPOB and MASSOB to mark “Biafra Day’.

The only exception was Ebonyi where the residents went about their normal duties.

Enugu metropolis was a shadow of itself.

The Enugu State capital was deserted by residents.

Government offices, banks, shops, schools, market places and other offices were shut as were motor parks, filling stations and eateries.

Only a few commercial vehicles and tricycles operated.

Security operatives were seen patrolling the streets.

The situation was not different in Abia, Anambra and Imo states.

The popular Ariaria International Market, Ekeoha Market, Cemetery, Ahịa Ọhụrụ and other markets in Abia State did not open for business.

Schools, including public and private ones, asked their students to stay at home.

Government and private companies including commercial banks were similarly shut for business.

Markets, schools and offices in Imo and Anambra similarly shut down.

    The roads were largely empty.

The Imo State Police Command urged residents to disregard the IPOB/MASSOB order and warned against attempts to enforce it.

Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma reassured all residents that the Command, in synergy with other security agencies, had activated robust security measures to forestall any form of threat or attack across the state.

The Service Commanders and Heads of security agencies in Imo—including Brigadier General M. I. Abbas, Commander 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze; DSS Director DD Olushola Aguda; Air Cdr DE Bello, Commander Nigeria Air Force 211 QRG; as well as heads of NSCDC, Immigration, FRSC, and Fire Services, according to him, had jointly instituted proactive measures and were working to avert any sit-at-home threat and protect lives and property.

He said joint security operatives had been strategically deployed across the 27 local government areas of the state.

“These operatives are currently undertaking intensive confidence-building patrols and operation show-of-force to deter criminal elements and reassure members of the public,” the police boss noted.

No violence was reported at press time.

Ebonyi ignores order as businesses remain open

The sit-at-home protest was a non- starter in Ebonyi.

The roads, markets, shops, banks and most schools were busy as usual.

A resident, James Ikedieze, said the people were tired of the sit-at-home.

He wondered why the organisers could impose restrictions unilaterally on the people.

“They should look for a better way to honor our fallen heroes and agitate for whatever they are agitating instead of punishing the people they seek to liberate,” he said.

“They can organise symposia and lectures where people can brainstorm on the way to develop the region instead of these destructive actions.

“If they kill everybody and destroy the economy of the region, what and who exactly will they govern?” he queried.

Finland begins terrorism trial against Simon Ekpa

The trial of the self-acclaimed Biafra agitator, Nigerian-Finnish, Simon Ekpa, commenced in Finland on Friday.

Ekpa, who heads a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was charged with terrorism offences by the Finnish authorities on May 16, 2025.

The deputy prosecutor general in Finland charged Ekpa with public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and participation in a terrorist group.

Ekpa, who was arrested in November 2024 following Nigeria’s government request, appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday as the country’s government commenced his terrorism trial.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala.
