As Simon Ekpa comes to judgement

    • By Zayd Ibn Isah

Simon Ekpa, the self-styled leader of the Biafra secessionist movement, appears to be facing his long-overdue reckoning following his arrest by the Finnish government on allegations of terrorism. Ekpa has consistently stirred the hornet’s nest for years with his incendiary remarks and actions, so much so that his name has become synonymous with terror in the once peaceful and thriving south-eastern region of Nigeria.

Ekpa rose to prominence after the erstwhile leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria to face justice under the administration of former president, Muhammadu Buhari. Like Kanu, Ekpa’s leadership and influence enabled the perpetration of a cycle of violence and instability that has made lives nasty, brutish and short (apologies to Thomas Hobbes).

Even now, following his arrest, IPOB has emerged to distance itself from Simon Ekpa, vehemently denying any affiliation with him and declaring that he was never a member of the group, let alone its leader. Whether this claim is believable remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: Ekpa’s self-proclaimed sit-at-home orders, enforced through fear and brutality, have crippled the region’s economy and inflicted unimaginable suffering on the people he claims to represent. Schools, markets, and businesses have been forced to close and innocent lives have been lost—all in the name of a misguided separatist agitation.

Ekpa was reportedly appointed to oversee the affairs of Radio Biafra following Kanu’s arrest in June 2021. However, after being dismissed from the role, he formed his own faction. From that point onward, Ekpa began issuing orders, including the controversial sit-at-home directives, which IPOB’s leadership has publicly and repeatedly disavowed.

This faction, led by Ekpa, has been linked to escalating violence in the region, including attacks on security forces and the destruction of public property. Recently, Ekpa declared himself the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE) and oversaw the formation of an armed group called the ‘Biafra Liberation Army.’ What Ekpa and his followers fail to grasp is that justice cannot be built on a foundation of injustice and blind brutality. There is no strategy for agitation more self-defeating than one that amounts to cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Throughout history, true leadership has required accountability and a commitment to the welfare of one’s people, rather than the reckless perpetuation of fear and violence. This is something Simon Ekpa fundamentally failed to understand—until his recent arrest.

The consequences of IPOB’s activities are staggering. A recent report estimates that sit-at-home orders and violence have cost the south-eastern economy over N5 trillion in lost productivity over the past two years. Small businesses, which form the backbone of the region’s economy, have borne the brunt of the crisis, with thousands closing their doors permanently. Education has also been severely disrupted, with countless children missing significant periods of schooling due to fear of attacks. Healthcare systems, already strained, have seen delays in critical services as movement is restricted on declared sit-at-home days.

Now, Simon Ekpa has come to judgement—not equity. For he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Ekpa’s hands are stained with the blood of innocent Nigerians in south-eastern Nigeria. At the height of his reign, as stated earlier, he declared himself “Prime Minister” and created an office—a position he later denied in a Finnish court. Imagine a king denying his kingdom! What manner of “Prime Minister” is this? If Simon Ekpa were Moses, I doubt he would have been able to lead his people to the Promised Land.

This is someone who was almost running a parallel government from Finland, barking orders to his foot soldiers at home, who wreaked havoc at will. Faced with the prospect of jail, he is now backtracking. Doesn’t this betrayal of trust confirm the allegations of using the secessionist agitation to enrich self and cronies?

If there is anything his arrest and subsequent remand in prison have demonstrated, it is that the long arm of the law, though sometimes delayed, is relentless. Interpol’s involvement in investigating his activities sends a strong message: incitement to violence and terrorism knows no borders. Nations that once served as safe havens for such agitators are waking up to the consequences of harbouring individuals who incite chaos abroad.

Simon Ekpa’s rhetoric and actions have exposed the dangerous intersection of diaspora activism and local instability. From his Finnish base, he exploited digital platforms to spread propaganda and issue directives, while the real cost of his commands was borne by Nigerians on the ground. This disconnect between the instigator and the affected is emblematic of the broader challenges posed by globalized radicalism. Tragically, this chaos was allowed to go on for far too long.

As Simon Ekpa faces the prospect of repatriation to face the full wrath of the law, it is imperative to reflect on the broader implications of his actions. The Southeast, a region historically known for its industrious spirit and resilience, has been hijacked by a narrative of violence, stagnation, and division. Yet, the people of the region deserve better. They deserve leaders who prioritize dialogue over belligerence and unity over division. It is high time right-thinking Nigerians in the Southeast rise up to counter rhetoric that unfairly cripples the progress of their homelands.

This moment should also serve as a wake-up call to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. While grievances and aspirations are valid in any democracy, the methods employed to address them must remain lawful and constructive. Ekpa’s judgement should not only be seen as a reckoning for his actions but also as a deterrent to others who might consider taking a similar path.

His arrest also reminds me of another self-acclaimed secessionist leader, Adeyinka Grandson (now forgotten), who was advocating for a Yoruba nation with his platform, Young Yorubas for Freedom. He spoke ill of other tribes, especially the major tribes, on social media, but it wasn’t long before he got his comeuppance. He is now serving a four-year jail term in a UK prison. Sadly, the country is bedevilled by secessionist agitations left, right, and centre, more than 60 years after independence. Almost all the regions feel marginalized. And this has given rise to mutual suspicion.

As the curtain begins to fall on Simon Ekpa’s campaign of terror, one can only hope that his arraignment will herald a new dawn for peace, progress and genuine leadership for the Southeast. More of his ilk should now understand that the perpetration of violence and instability will no longer be tolerated. Nigerians have already endured a great deal due to ongoing reforms under the new dispensation. While they hope for a light at the end of the tunnel, they cannot afford to suffer more pain and loss from the likes of Simon Ekpa. At this juncture, there must be a resounding reminder that no one is above the law and that the path to freedom should never be paved with the blood and tears of the innocent citizens.

Finally, the jubilation that greeted Simon Ekpa’s arrest in Finland points to the fact that many Nigerians are still committed to a peaceful, prosperous and indissoluble country. As I always say, what binds us together is stronger than what tears us apart. The fault lines are always there, but, as someone once said, we will continue to disagree to agree, but never to disintegrate. Just as our national anthem reminds us, “though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand”.

The Enugu State Government has praised the Republic of Finland for the arrest of Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based leader of the criminal group Autopilots, describing him as a common criminal and terrorist with no regard for the welfare of the Igbo people.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government labeled Ekpa a murderer and fraudster who thrives on the suffering of his people while living extravagantly abroad.

The state pledged its readiness to provide evidence of Ekpa’s alleged atrocities against the Igbo community to ensure his prosecution and conviction, whether in Finland or Nigeria.

“The Enugu State Government welcomes the arrest of the Finland-based terrorist, Simon Ekpa.

“His arrest and trial will no doubt go a long way in strengthening peace, security, and stability in all parts of the South East.

“This arrest is in line with the demand of Governor Peter Mbah Administration, which has repeatedly made it known that Ekpa is a megalomaniac, common criminal, murderer, and fraudster, who takes joy in feeding fat on the manipulated emotions of Ndigbo and inflicting misery on the South East region.

“Ekpa has for long, and unfortunately from Finland, made a living by creating a siege climate and mentality in the South East, destroying lives, property, and the Igbo trademark of entrepreneurship and hard work. He thrives on manipulating, exploiting, and extorting the people on the pretext of fighting for their interest and for the restoration of Biafra,” the government said.

DHQ: Ekpa’s arrest in Finland victory for anti-terror battle

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) yesterday described the arrest of the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile  Simon Ekpa as a key victory in the anti-terror war.

It stated that his apprehension by Finnish authorities indicated that the international community was in synergy with Nigeria in its efforts to end terrorism.

Ekpa was arrested alongside four others on suspicion of terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and terrorism financing.

The development came barely 10 days to the December 2 date he declared as the day for unveiling the map of a proposed 40 “United States of Biafra”  and the official declaration of Biafra’s independence.

His arrested also came a few days after deadly attacks in the Southeast by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network/IPOB, which he allegedly controls from his base in Lahti region of Finland.

The  DHQ had in March declared Ekpa who is the factional leader of the  Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and 96 others wanted for terrorism, violent extremism, and secessionist threats against the country.

A  Finnish local publication Yle, reported that he was remanded in Police custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court on charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

The publication claimed that the Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrests in a statement, adding that the other suspects were apprehended for allegedly financing terrorist activities.

“The detention demands are related to a preliminary investigation in which a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, born in the 1980s, is suspected of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” the police said.

According to the report, Ekpa is accused of coordinating violent actions against civilians and authorities in Nigeria’s   Southeast from Finland, using social media platforms.

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen, who leads the investigation, said:  “The man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels.”

Finnish police stated that international cooperation has been crucial to the ongoing investigation, with hearings for the suspects scheduled for the same day of his arrest.

In his statement, Brig.-Gen. Gusau said  Gen. Musa hopes that Ekpa’s  arrest ‘’will be a step towards his extradition to Nigeria so that he will face justice.”

Although the Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB had since distanced itself from him, Ekpa commands a large followership of many criminal elements in the Southeast.

Since Kanu’s detention in  November  2015, the Nigerian–Finnish citizen is reported to be coordinating the Monday sit–at–home in the Southeast from Finland.

In 2023, Ekpa  declared in a widely circulated social media video that “Nigerian elections will not be allowed in Biafran territory.”

Ekpa is a known figure in Finland where he is a member of the National Coalition Party (NCP) and  Lahti’s public transport committee.

In 2023, he was briefly detained in Finland on allegations of fundraising fraud.

Our members killed four policemen, woman, Simon Ekpa claims

The controversial Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, has claimed responsibility for the killing of four policemen on Monday in Owerri, the Imo State, capital.

On Monday, gunmen had attacked and killed four policemen along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway.

Also, the gunmen killed a Point on Sale (PoS) machine woman operator.

Ekpa, based in Finland, heads Autopilot, a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Biafra agitator also founded Biafra Defence Forces and Biafra Liberation Army, which are armed militant wings of the Autopilot IPOB.

He has been linked to some deadly attacks in the region.

In a post on his X handle shortly after the attack, Ekpa announced that members of his Biafra Defence Forces had killed the operatives in Owerri.

“The Biafra Defence Forces Owerri Command has recovered weapons from the terrorists after neutralising them in numbers,” he wrote on the microblogging platform at 8:50 p.m. on Monday.

Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen, often refers to Nigerian security operatives as “terrorists.”

The Biafra agitator said he and his group are demanding the withdrawal of Nigerian security forces from the Southeast and that they were committed to enforcing the demand.

“If you think you will continue to use force and terrorism tactics to force us to remain in the union, this will continue to be your faith in Biafraland,” Mr Ekpa stated, referring to the latest attack on the police.

Although the word “faith” was used by the source, it is grammatically wrong and should, therefore, be changed to “fate.”

The Biafra agitator often shares on his X handle details of attacks in Nigeria’s south-east.

Like IPOB, which Nnamdi Kanu leads, Ekpa is seeking the secession of the south-east and some parts of the south-south from Nigeria to form an independent state known as Biafra.

Ex-DSS director demands extradition of Simon Ekpa

A former director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has called for the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based leader of the Biafra in exile prime minister of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ejiofor in a statement on Tuesday, June 4, described Ekpa’s actions in Finland as “worse than those of Nnamdi Kanu” and demanded that he would be sent back to Nigeria for trial.

“Simon Ekpa is not a genuine representative of reasonable people, but rather an influencer of misguided elements.”

Ejiofor stated: “If he’s serious, he should come back to Nigeria and direct people to commit crimes. He’s a voice for misguided elements; he’s not a voice for reasonable people. I can’t be listening to him; most people cannot be listening to him.”

Ejiofor urged the Nigerian government to initiate negotiations with Finnish authorities to repatriate Ekpa.

“What he’s doing in Finland is worse than what Nnamdi Kanu was doing. He should be repatriated for trial,” he emphasized.

Ejiofor’s comments come as Ekpa continues to mobilize support for the IPOB’s cause from Finland, sparking concerns among Nigerian authorities about his influence on youths in the region.

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, has sounded a note of warning to Simon Ekpa and his group of Biafra agitators to steer clear of the Niger Delta, saying that the Ijaw people are not part of Biafra and will never be.

The IYC made the assertion in response to an online video on X (Twitter) by Simon Ekpa, a Biafran crusader in exile claiming that Ijaws are part of Biafran state.

In a statement on Friday by the national spokesman for IYC, Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill, the foremost Ijaw group, said the Ijaw people would not tolerate any other reckless comment about their people and territories belonging to Biafra.

“In the said video, Ekpa expressed the point that  Nigerian soldiers attacked his Biafra people and Biafra republic. He was simply referring to the Okuama attack in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State on March 14, 2024 wherein 17 soldiers were killed and the subsequent onslaught carried out by the military on Igbomotoru and Peremabiri, Ijaw communities in Bayelsa State.

However, the IYC spokesman said the Council was already dealing with a lot of issues regarding the attack on the soldiers and the subsequent invasion of Ijaw communities by the military, resulting in the loss of many lives.

He noted that the Ijaw people had never at any point in time been part of Biafra and can never be part of Biafra.

Princewill reiterated: “The attack on the soldiers has been condemned and it remains condemned just as the IYC  has also charged the military to go after only the criminals and not killing of innocent people which we have also condemned in Igbomotoru and Peremabiri.

“For the purpose of clarity, the IYC is putting the records straight that the Ijaw struggle for a better living condition in Nigeria is older than the so-called Biafra agitation.

“Our late Ijaw hero and foremost nationalist, late Major Isaac Adaka Boro, who is regarded as a champion of minority rights movement in Nigeria, declared the ‘Niger Delta Republic’ on February 23, 1966 a year before late Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu who was the then Governor of the Eastern Region declared the Biafra Republic on May 30, 1967.

“As Ijaw people, we are Nigerians, original occupants, and dwellers of the Niger Delta region. We  reiterate that no part of Niger Delta belongs to their so-called imaginary Biafra.

“The struggle of the Ijaw people is majorly in resource control and not a secessionist movement. We have our own struggles, and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) also has their own separate struggle. The Ijaws are not part of their Biafran struggle and ideology.”

He said while the IYC was not opposed to the IPOB agitation, the Ijaws remain law-abiding people in the Nigerian State.

Princewill warned that going forward, the Ijaws would not tolerate watching Biafrans laying claims to their territories.

The spokesman insisted: “We are Ijaw people. We are Nigerians in the  Niger Delta. We don’t have any ties or whatever with the Biafran people and their agitation.

“Finally, the IYC is using this medium to inform the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian military that all the areas mentioned are not part of Biafra and can never be part of Biafra. IYC will not allow any purported attack on the military in our territories.”
