    Soludo boom or bust?

After his historic inauguration on 17 March 2022, the poetic Sam Omatseye serenaded Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo as the Boom of Anambra Orchestra, on account of his rather enthralling baritone.

Nearly two years down the line, Soludo seems the Bust of Anambra Confusion — or how would you describe Anambra government agents, behaving like common thugs, wilfully destroying people’s livelihood: newspaper vendors and other low folks, eking out honest living, in harsh economic times — and by a governor that claims to know economics?

Ba!  How can a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, now elected to govern a real state, the same that waxes poetic over monetary theories, ever justify such wilful onslaught on value, no matter how low that end of the market is?

How can Prof. Soludo, PhD Economics, for whatever noble reasons, pounce on newspapers?  What’s the grouse?  The newspaper content?  Newspaper copies as environmental litters?  Or just hare-brained muscle-flexing?

To those Anambra government agents that reportedly boasted they’d, at all costs, shut out the physical sale of newspapers, how on earth will they curb the online editions — by crashing the websites of all the circulating newspapers?  Ridiculous?

Besides, which government that lays claims to civilization ever wars with the media and lives happily ever after to tell the tale?

No, it’s not because the press is exceptional, as many arrogant journalists often love to mislead themselves.  It’s just because a robust news culture is central to civil rights, which drives the democratic culture.  So, how do you war against that and survive?

Worse: mid-term to re-election — or otherwise — Soludo and agents are busy warring against the masses that control the vote (newspaper vendors and sundry poor folks), the Anambra traditional institution (as permanent as elected terms are fleeting) and now, the media!  Does someone, somewhere harbour an electoral suicide wish?

Governor Soludo had better change tack.  He should caution those hot heads giving his government a bad name.  They are all nameless.  But Soludo would carry the can.

Keeping Awka clean need not equate stripping folks of their livelihood.  It could be a win-win for the government and the people, though to be fair some folks could be stiff-necked.  But the government must think deep and hard to get to its goals.

Let it not be written of Soludo and his avant-garde government that knows the economy and preens civilization but still wars against the media as Don Quixote tilts at windmills!

Tragedy would not even cut it!  A word is good for the wise!

  • Again, Soludo’s ACTDA officials seize Nation, Sun, Vanguard, Thisday newspapers

Again, Soludo’s ACTDA officials seize Nation, Sun, Vanguard, Thisday newspapers

Officials of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Awka Capital Territory Development Agency (ACTDA) have again seized all the newspapers found with vendors.

It was the second time in two days that ACTDA officials would harass vendors in the city and subject them to beating.

“Let us see who owns Anambra, whether it is Tinubu or Soludo. Any newspaper we see in Anambra, we will destroy it,” a heavily built official told the vendors at Aroma.

“You people had the guts to report our activities online. Let us see who owns the land,” he further threatened.

On Thursday, the officials had beaten up some vendors, destroyed their wares and smashed all the PoS machines as well as tables and umbrellas belonging to them.

The newspapers they seized around 10 am yesterday included The Nation, The SUN, The Punch, Thisday, Vanguard and The Guardian.

The officials of ACTDA maintained that the state government did not want any newspaper to be sold again on the streets.

The Nation learnt yesterday that the thugs being used to enforce ‘keep Anambra clean’ are being prepared for the 2025 governorship election in the state.

It was also gathered that the vendors in the state were summoned by the Department of State Service (DSS) yesterday.

At the time of filing this report, they were still at the DSS office at Amawbia, near Awka.

It was further gathered that the summons by the DSS was meant to fashion the way forward on the problem between the vendors and the agency.

The harassment has not been against newspaper vendors alone but every petty trader on the streets in Anambra State as part of government’s ‘keep Anambra clean’ project.

However, a government official who spoke with The Nation said: “What they are doing is good. It is to make Anambra look good. But what people are complaining about is the crude way the enforcers are going about it.

“They don’t have to burn the wares of people who want to make little money to feed their families, destroy the bananas of petty traders or smash people’s PoS machines,” he said.

JUST IN: Soludo ‘s agency destroys Nation, Sun, Vanguard newspapers in Anambra

Tension heightened in Anambra state on Thursday, February 15, following the destruction of newspapers and beating of vendors in the state by the men of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA).

It was gathered that they brazenly declared their disregard, suggesting the matter be left to God, while insisting that the state government forbids newspaper sales on the streets.

Among the newspapers destroyed were The Nation, The Sun, Vanguard, Punch, and Guardian.

The aides also attacked individuals at the popular Aroma junction, including security personnel, and destroyed the vendors’ PoS machines.

The action of men of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority ACTDA, made passersby and petty traders in the area, to rein curses on the operators of such mayhem.

The Nation reports that the reckless action by  the ACTDA drew curses from onlookers and local traders.

The vendors have therefore vowed not to resume newspaper sales until there is a change in Soludo’s administration.

The tables of the vendors were equally destroyed while their umbrellas were confisticated by the agents of the government.

Last week, such inhuman treatment by Soludo ‘s aides attracted the attention of the state lawmakers, who advocated for a mini market to set up for them in the state.

According to the lawmakers, such was to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.

The sponsor of the motion, Henry Mbachu, is the member representing Awka South 1 Constituency.

While making his submission during plenary, Mbachu said poverty rate was on the increase, adding that creating avenues for people to earn a living had become mandatory.

“There are many quarters within Awka metropolis which create the need to establish local mini-markets to serve the people living within those areas.

“It is nearly impossible to secure a shop within the already established markets and the limited shops available are in high and exorbitant price to rent.

“The creation of mini-markets within Awka metropolis, will be a solution to solve the menace of shanties, street trading and serve as a means of encouraging micro businesses thereby achieving the goals of making Anambra a livable and prosperous homeland, ” the lawmaker said

Soludo ‘s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, told The Nation, that he was not aware of the situation, but promised to reach out to the MD of the agency.

Aburime maintained that keeping Anambra clean was for everyone, adding that even in Lagos, newspaper vendors were allowed to exist at their different designated areas.

The Nation overheard one of the ACTDA officials saying, “our Governor is behind what we are doing, if they like, let them report to Tinubu, nothing will happen.”

The destruction had not been against the vendors alone, but to every petty trader along all the streets in Anambra state as part of government’s ‘keep Anambra clean project.

Soludo: monthly birth rate has risen from 200 to 1,600

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has said birth rate in the state has increased from 200 to 1,600 per month in less than two years.

He attributed the development to huge investments his administration had made in the health sector, including introduction of free ante-natal and child delivery.

Speaking at the 65th birthday ceremony of Sir Emeka Offor at Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government, the governor said 52 per cent of the free ante-natal beneficiaries were non-indigenes.

He said: “We have made a lot of progress in health care. When I assumed office, the state was recording birth rate of 200 monthly, but now, it has increased to 1,600 with zero mortality.

“This is because of the free ante-natal and child delivery we have instituted.

“Out of these beneficiaries, 48 per cent are Anambra indigenes, while the rest are from outside the state.”

Soludo hailed Offor for living an impactful life and reaching out to the poor and widows, describing him as an example of the “Anambra spirit” of philanthropy and community service.

Offor thanked friends and well-wishers for celebrating with him on his birthday, promising to spend the rest of his life in the service of God and humanity.

Soludo’s agency destroys newspapers, sack vendors in Anambra

There is tension in Anambra State following the destruction of newspapers and the sack of vendors on the streets by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agency.

Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has been packing and destroying goods of widows and less-privileged masses in the State since December.

The development has forced the vendors to down tools in the State in preparation for a massive protest any moment from now.

One of their leaders who preferred anonymity told The Nation Thursday in Awka that they were putting up à petition to the Governor to that effect.

The situation has heightened tension as newspapers were not sold in Anambra.

The tables of the vendors were destroyed while their umbrellas were burnt by government agents.

Anambra Assembly urged Governor Soludo to direct the Special Adviser on Trade and Market and the Managing Director ACTDA to commence the construction of affordable local mini-markets within Awka metropolis.

This, according to the lawmakers, was to control the menace of street trading and associated effects on the state capital.

Hon Henry Mbachu, representing Awka South 1 Constituency, sponsored the motion.

While making his submission, Mbachu said the poverty rate was on the increase, adding that creating avenues for people to earn a living had become mandatory.

He said there should be designated places for vendors in the State, adding that everywhere in the world, vendors, especially, those at the designated centres, were not affected by such policies.

Aburime maintained that keeping Anambra clean was for everyone, adding that even in Lagos, they were allowed to exist in designated areas.

  • Soludo, Anambra traditional rulers and 2025 politics

Soludo, Anambra traditional rulers and 2025 politics

    • By Ike Willie-Nwobu

Sir: Anambra is a unique political experiment. The Anambra voter is sophisticated and defiant. The Anambra political terrain is full of landmines and banana peels. Veteran politicians and age-long political dynasties have known sudden defeats in a state that has consistently mocked the Nigerian existing state of affairs.

Charles Soludo leads the current government. He has two full years before he tests his popularity again at the polls. Next year, he may have Ifeanyi Ubah to contend with. The senator representing Anambra South in the senate has the guile, pockets, and people to knock Soludo off his perch.

Soludo knows this just as well as he knows the unpredictability of those who would determine his fate at the polls when the date is due. It is why the state governor is railing against the chieftaincy title conferred on Ubah in Neni.

It is also the reason the Anambra Traditional Rulers Council in the state has been dissolved. Soludo says the council had to be dissolved because it was not properly constituted.

It is curious that it took the conferment of a chieftaincy title, a string of suspensions, and criticism from the council for the state government to discover that it was not properly constituted.

Nigeria’s crisis has disoriented even those who have always played such key roles in stabilizing the country. Infiltration and interference have also been such powerful disruptors.

The traditional institution has been hard hit. Those unfit to be even courtiers in any palace have somehow found their way to thrones, supported of course by mischievous government officials. Royal appointments have known no little government interference. This has denigrated the traditional institution.

But Soludo’s insecurity is worrisome. The conferment of chieftaincy titles on his potential rivals should not worry him so much if he is so sure he is the solution to his people’s problems. Since he fancies himself the solution to Anambra’s myriad problems, he should not be too bothered by what others are doing. He should not be having sleepless nights because of the activities of other politicians. Especially when they have tried and failed to be governor before.

But Soludo seems disconnected in a way that is so disappointing for many people who have invested hope in his administration.

He won his election to much fanfare in November 2021. His March-2022 swearing was dubbed a new dawn for the state. However, that dawn has since been replaced by dusk, the light going off as quickly as it came on. Controversy after controversy has greeted his every move.

In going out of his way to court even more controversy, he has lost credibility. Traditional rulers in Anambra State should be kept out of politics. Their appointment and work should be insulated from noxious politics.

Soludo may need to check the excesses of traditional rulers some of whom have forgotten what they represent.  But he should also remember that the traditional institution is where it is today because of interference.

State governors have been known to appoint their cronies to exalted royal seats. They have been known to politicize traditional institutions and turn their custodians into sycophants. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo came under fire last year for humiliating traditional rulers at an occasion in Oyo State. Yahaya Bello who was governor of Kogi State until days ago, was known for his vendetta against traditional rulers in the state.

It amounts to playing with fire to toy with traditional institutions. Soludo should know that.

The custodians of age-long traditions should never be dragged into the infantile tussles of those whose tantrums are as brief as the transience of their power is swift.

Disaster looms if key pillars of the Nigerian society continue to be pulled down one after the other.

Soludo decries battering of 11-year-old housemaid

A lawyer has allegedly brutalised an 11-year old housemaid in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The Nation learnt that the victim, who was rescued by the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, was allegedly beaten up by her madam, a lawyer, for touching her daughter’s body.

She said the suspect, an indigene of Nkpor, but living at Igwilo Street, Akapka, Onitsha, allegedly used broken bottle, iron, knife and pistol on her within two weeks of her stay with her.

Sources said the lawyer had been on the run, while Governor Chukwuma Soludo had promised to intervene.

The Nation gathered that the suspect also burnt the victim’s clothes and dropped her off stark naked with her relative, Ifeoma Muoghalu.

Speaking at the hospital where the victim was first taken to in Ogidi, Muoghalu said the suspect boasted that nothing would happen, as she was lawyer, who knew how to work her way out.

“We handed over the victim to her on January 5, only to be disfigured within the short period of her stay with her.

“The woman burnt the little girl’s clothes and dropped her off stark naked with her relation.

“Since the incident, she has not been picking my calls,” Moughalu said.

Commissioner Obinabo said she was notified of the incident by a human rights group, Defend Your Rights Foundation.

She said she immediately swung into action by dispatching her team to the scene.

Lamenting the incident, Obinabo vowed to do everything to apprehend the suspect.

“The Soludo administration will not rest until justice is served to victims of domestic violence,” she said.

The visibly traumatised victim has been admitted in an undisclosed hospital in Awka where she is receiving treatment.

Anambra 2025: You’re scared of me, Ubah tells Soludo

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has alleged that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s recent actions against him stemmed from fear.

Ubah, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) told reporters Monday, January 29, in Nnewi, said that since declaring his intention to vie for the 2025 governorship election, Soludo has persistently targeted him.

However, he pledged that he would do only four years if given the opportunity by the people of Anambra while advising Soludo to concentrate and give the people the good governance he promised them instead of being afraid of his shadows.

Explaining the rationale behind a single term, Ubah emphasized the commitment to honour the rotational arrangement established by a gentleman’s agreement, ensuring equitable representation for the Anambra South Senatorial District.

This arrangement has governed the zoning and rotation of the state’s governorship position since 2014.

Soludo, is also, from Anambra South Senatorial District and is in the second year of his first tenure in office.

Ubah said he would not only do one term of four years but also conduct local government elections in the state within four months if allowed to serve ndi Anambra.

He said four years were enough for any focused governor of a state to do great things and change the lives of his people positively.

Describing the development in the state as very slow, Ubah said 80 per cent of his blueprints or ideas for the development of the state were innovative and beyond the capacity of his opponents.

He said if voted as governor, Anambra state would be both the commercial and health hob in the Southeast and Nigeria in general.

He expressed disappointment with the way the incumbent governor of the state, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, was disrespecting the traditional institution in the state

He said the governor’s action was petty and unfortunate, adding that he would do much better in the classroom than in government.

Ubah said: “Everybody has his or her calling. Some are in the classroom, others in business and vice versa. The Governor is not good at what he is doing now, we have to tell ourselves the truth.

“My plans for the development of Anambra State are huge.  As a private person and politician, I have done great in the transformation of the lives of many people.

“I have equally done it both in sports, education, commerce, employment and in overall youth and women empowerment. I have the capacity to make the people of my state happy again and I am ready too.”
