How Sound Sultan’s death affected my music career, by Seyi Shay

Singer and songwriter Seyi Shay has revealed how the death of her mentor, Sound Sultan, deeply affected her music career and personal journey.

In an interview with TVC, Seyi Shay described Sound Sultan, who passed away in 2021 after battling angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, as a father figure who played a pivotal role in her career.

She said his passing left her feeling lost and directionless.

According to her, at the time of his death, she was filming Nigerian Idol and had to push through the project despite her grief.

What hurt her the most, she noted, was not getting to see him before he died, as she had planned to visit him in New York with a gift he had requested.

She added that the loss, coupled with the toxic pressures of the music industry and intense public scrutiny, made her decide to take a step back from music.

The singer noted that around that period, she also discovered she was pregnant with her daughter, which further strengthened her decision.

Seyi Shay remembered Sound Sultan as a kind and supportive mentor who introduced her to key industry professionals and stood by her career from the start.

His death, she said, pushed her to prioritise her mental health and overall well-being.

She said, “During the filming of Nigerian Idol, my mentor, also my best friend, who is like a father figure to me, and also the person who brought me to the Nigerian music industry, died. He passed away; Sound Sultan.

“When I first came to Nigeria, I was living with him and his wife in FESTAC for a year. He was the one who co-signed me and introduced me to everybody in the industry to make sure that those who were his people look out for me.

“So, when he passed away, it was really hard for me to complete the filming but I made it to the end. What hurt the most is that I didn’t get to see him before he passed away. I was supposed to fly to see him in New York that weekend when we had a break. He asked me to bring him something specifically. It just torn me apart. I felt like I didn’t have the will to continue to do music without Sound Sultan, my peace of mind, and my mental health. So, I decided to go on a little break.

“Also, during that period, I got pregnant and I told myself there’s no way I’m going to have my child in the toxic music industry that I’m in and under the scrutiny that I was constantly under. So, I just thought I should take a break.”

Sean Tizzle pays tribute to Sound Sultan’s enduring legacy

Singer Sean Tizzle has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mentor, Sound Sultan, who died of cancer in July 2021.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Tizzle described Sultan as a big brother, guide, and quiet force who believed in him when others didn’t.

He recalled how Sultan discovered his talent and supported him, teaching him not just music but also humility, grace, and the importance of using his voice for more than just melodies.

Tizzle expressed regret for not expressing his gratitude earlier, wishing he had told Sultan how much he impacted his life and career before he passed away.

He described Sultan as selfless, giving without expecting anything in return, and stated that his impact lives on in every song, stage, and performance.

He wrote: “A Letter to My Mentor…Dear Sound Sultan, It’s taken me years to find the right words. Maybe I was scared they wouldn’t be enough. Maybe I was still trying to understand how to say goodbye.

“You were more than just a legend to me. You were a big brother, a guide, a quiet force who saw something in me before the world ever did. You gave me a chance when others wouldn’t even look my way. You believed, and that belief lit a fire that still burns in me today.

“I remember the early days your words, your encouragement, your way of making greatness look effortless. You didn’t just teach me about music. You taught me humility, grace, and the importance of using my voice for more than just melodies.

“You were selfless. You gave without expecting. You showed up when you didn’t have to. And though you’re not here with us in the physical, your impact lives on in every song, every stage I step on, every time someone says “Sho Lee still hits different.”

“I wish I had said this earlier, to your face. I wish I hugged you tighter. But now, I say it to the world:

“Thank you, Sound Sultan. I am because you were. I carry your spirit with me always. Forever grateful. Sean Tizzle”.

Sound Sultan: Remembering the 6ft entertainer four years after

If Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiyu Fasasi aka Sound Sultan was alive today, he would have expanded his self-styled #EdideEmuSariJe bant with many corporate organisations backing his ideals.

Sadly, Sound Sultan is no more. He passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 in the United States of America, after a brave battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The lanky singer, rapper, songwriter, comedian, producer and actor, who stood at 6ft 4inch while alive, would have discovered more young and upcoming talents, probably produced more films, recorded more songs, and made more money with his investment in the Lagos Islanders Basketball Club. He would also have been looking forward to his 48th birthday on November 27.

But as it is with the world, people move on a few months after anyone and everyone’s passing. Many promises from friends, associates and family might have gone with the wind and gram!

However, Sound Sultan’s lovely widow, Chichi Morah, also known as Faridah Fasasi is doing well, while his three lovely children, Mayowa, Bidemi, and Zara are growing faster than many know.

In furtherance, one man took a liking to Sound Sultan while alive and has vowed to keep his legacies and memory alive. The man, Idris Olorunnimbe, is the founder and Group Chief Executive of The Temple Company and Ogidi Studios.

Following Sound Sultan’s passing in 2021, Olorunnimbe, who knew about the singer’s passion for his Islamic beliefs and contribution to the religion, inaugurated the Sound Sultan Ramadan lecture. The annual lecture is to keep the memory of the devoted entertainer alive while Islamic scholars offer prayers for the repose of his soul with his family in attendance.

To this end, The Temple Company has held four editions of the event since Sound Sultan’s passing with some of the late entertainer’s colleagues attending.

Wednesday, March 6, 2024 herald the fourth Sound Sultan Ramadan lecture. The event held at the Temple Management headquarters on Victoria Island, Lagos and had in attendance, Idris Olorunnimbe, L.A.X, Bisola Aiyeola, Bisola Bata, Mimi Onalaja, Tunde Folawiyo, Sheerafat Andu (Arabel boss), Rasheed Muri Okunola, amongst other individuals.

The National Missioner of the Ansar Ud Deen society of Nigeria, Sheikh AbdulRahman Ahmad, was also in attendance to lead in prayers and deliver a Ramadan lecture.

While alive, Sound Sultan defied the notion that the consumption of alcohol, cigarette, cannabis and other vices are a must on the road to fame, stardom, and fortune on the entertainment scene. He proved the notion wrong as he remained not only true to his values and he was for most of his life a non-smoker and teetotaller till death. He never engaged in any vices till his passing at the age of 44. Rather, Sound Sultan set an example as one of the few Nigerian entertainers in Hip Hop, who practiced Islam.

Reminiscing on Sound Sultan’s life as a true Muslim, actor, and comedian, Tomiwa ‘Sage’ Kukoyi says, “During every Ramadan since 2010 #EdideEmuSariJe was a bant we all jumped on, on Twitter. Egbon would tweet this at Tahajjud hours and at Sahur. He would do a little giveaway for those who fasted. But in all, SoundSultan Lived heavily, like a true Muslim, lived a life of service.”
