  • Sound Sultan, friends hold United4Food music concert

    To drive home the importance of food and agriculture, musician Sound Sultan and his friends in the entertainment industry have held the second edition of #United4Food music concert.

    The free concert which was held last Sunday at the Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, was sponsored and supported by Oxfam and HEDA Resource Centre in collaboration with Sound Sultan and friends. It had in attendance artistes like Sheyi Shay, Ice Prince, CDQ, Small Dr, Vector, DJ Consequence, Blackah and Lami Phillips.

    Sound Sultan said the 2018 edition of the concert, among other things, was to show appreciation to the millions of small-scale farmers who ensure food security for Nigerians.

    “It is unacceptable that nearly a billion people go to bed hungry every day and about a-third of that number lives in sub-Saharan Africa with Nigeria accounting for the highest percentage,” said Sound Sultan, a Food Security/agriculture Ambassador for Oxfam.

    “Small scale women and men farmers are the ones who produce about 70% of the food we consume in Africa, yet they are not well appreciated and do not get the support that they deserve. They are confronted by myriad of challenges including climate change, insecurity and inadequate government support among others.

    “Most importantly, we are also organised this concert to enlighten and encourage our young fans and friends to see agriculture as cool and trendy. We wish to change the wrong perception about agriculture and to let young people appreciate that agriculture can bring them that their dream lifestyle. That with agriculture you can live the life of a celebrity everyday if you are determined, innovative and business-like about it.”

    The musician further said that millions of young people around the world especially in Africa and Nigeria are making good waves in the business of agriculture.

    “They are changing their narratives from jobless and unemployed youth to agroprenuers who are creating values and employing others to work for them.”

  • Nigerians saxophone player need to improve – OLUJAZZ

    A professional saxophone player, Olu Alabi popularly called Olu Jazz has said some Nigerians saxophone player needs to up their game as most saxophone players in Nigeria are not playing the right way and needs to improve.

    Olu Jazz made the call during his mentorship session for young Nigerians saxophone players held for beginners and intermediate saxophone players recently in Lagos.

    The training according to OLUJAZZ is geared towards helping young and aspiring people become better saxophone players.

    OLUJAZZ in interview said he got inspired to organize the training after the noticing that a lot of Sax players in Nigeria need improvement.

    “I started playing sax in the 90’s. It wasn’t all rosy for me though as I had to quit school after I couldn’t afford money for my tuition fee. There was a time I didn’t have a personal saxophone for 3years after learning, but i thank God that everything is going as planned now and I have I spent two years training on saxophone in America.”

    “I decided to oganise this training after noticing that most saxophone players in the country needs upgrade on their sax skills and it also a form giving back to the society and it was why the lecture was organised for free to young sax players. I see this as an alternative to provide job to young once, just like i also make my living through this instrument.”

    On how he got the name Olu talkative, Olujazz said the name became a household name after ace comedian, Kofi, said he talked too much on the sax.

    Also, Issac Gerrad a singer and song writer said he has been playing the saxophone for the last nine years.

    He said, “I have been a professional R&B singer for the last 10years. I play drums and this training is opportunity for the younger generation.”

    “I have worked with Falz, Tiwa Savage, MI, Sound Sultan and i believe music itself is a work and if you keep on working hard, at the end of the day you will get there”.

    A student of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAB) participant at the training, Boluwatife Ojo said the organizer; OluJazz has been a very good mentor to him.

    According to, “I have been playing this instrument for past four years now and what has really helped me is meeting sax players like with Yemi sax, Yori Omole, and other professional saxophone.

    A saxophone engineer in interview The Nation, Akintoye oluwaseun said young saxophone players need to learn from professionals’ sax players.

    “I am a sax repairer and I have worked on all types of saxophone. I also play saxophone, though for fun as I prefer repairing. I have been working on saxophone for the last sixteen years.”

    “I learnt this work from Y.S Akinbosun who once worked with Fela Anikulapo Kuti. I know every single part of this instrument. I know fault of  the sax I already know the faulty parts, once I have my tools am good to go no matter the problem of the saxophone I’ll fix it.”

    “I have worked with Yemi sax, Yori Omole, Olu Jazz, Segun Atoyebi, Lagbaja, almost all popular professional saxophonists in Nigeria.” Akintoye said.

    Oluwaseun further advice young saxophone player to learn from professionals, keep rehearsing and be committed.

    Register for Lagos City Marathon, Sound Sultan urges

    Sound Sultan, an ambassador of the Lagos City Marathon scheduled to hold on February 10, 2018, has urged everyone to go and register for the race.

    He said this as the General Manager for the Lagos City Marathon, Yusuf Alli, disclosed that over 100 top runners from various part of the world are expected to compete for honours in Lagos.

    “Across the world, we should have a minimum of 100 top-class runners even though we originally penciled down 84,” he said.

    Alli revealed that entries for the 2018 Lagos City Marathon from both home and abroad has been overwhelming especially in the newly-introduced 10km Family Race.

    Alli however said that it is not a free for all as only the best and those capable of adding value will be officially invited. “We have raised our game and we are only bringing the best from all over the world, the first criteria we have set is that any athlete that would be invited or given any form of appearance fee should be doing below 2:10mins.”

    Alli also expressed optimism that Nigerian athletes should be able to give their counterparts from across the world a run for their money especially with the improved incentives by the organisers.

    “I am aware our home groom athletes have been training well, we expect them to improve on what that they did in the first two editions,” Alli said.

    “As for the organisers, we have increased their prize monies, so we hope that will spur them to better performance.”

    It was a carnival of music, comedy and food penultimate Friday at Queens Park Centre, Oniru Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos, as top Nigerian entertainers teamed up to sing against hunger as well as pronounce the significance of agriculture.

    Organised by HEDA Resource Centre in conjunction with Voice for Food Security and Oxfam Nigeria, the “United for Food Concert” was headlined by Naija Ninja sensation and Oxfam ambassador, Sound Sultan. It equally paraded some other popular artistes like Vector Tha Viper, Baba Dee, Niniola, Blackah, Lami and Lawizzy while DJ Spinall was on the wheel of steel.

    Anchored by MC Ushbebe, the show opened with a coterie of up and coming acts before Vector Tha Viper came on stage to sing hits like ‘Lose Myself’ and ‘King Kong’. Other artistes followed in quick succession.

    Rocking a black top over a black pant, Niniola wowed the audience with her performance of tracks like ‘This Is Me’ and ended with ‘Maradona.’ By the time Sound Sultan mounted the stage, the show had reached its climax, as he was joined by Baba Dee.

    However, the revelation of the night was Vanessa Jones, a five-year-old sensation, who dazzled the audience with her vocal prowess and acrobatic display on stage. Other highlights of the day were dancing and eating competitions that saw many going home with prizes including mobile phones, T-shirts, Faze caps, recharge cards and food items among others.

    Commenting on the concert, Sound Sultan urged Nigerians and governments at all levels to invest in agriculture so as to ensure food security in the country.

    “The ‘United for Food Concert’ is part of our efforts to inspire Nigerian youths to become active citizens and demand accountability from our leaders,” he said.

    “Today, one person in three in the world lives in poverty.

    “Our vision is a secure and prosperous Nigeria, where the benefits from economic growth are shared so the basic needs of all people are met… As the giant and largest economy in Africa, no Nigerian deserves to go to bed hungry.”

    Top celebrities including Sound Sultan, Vector, Niniola, Harrysong, Lami Philips and Illbliss among others are billed to perform at ‘United for Food’ concert which holds November 24 at Queens park event center, Oniru, Lagos.

    The concert, which is a brainchild of OXFAM, is targeted at inspiring Nigerian youths to become active citizens and demand accountability from the leaders.

    Speaking on the concert, OXFAM’s brand ambassador, Sound Sultan, said that 70% of Nigeria’s poor live in rural areas and derive their livelihood from small-scale agriculture.

    “Investing in agriculture remains the most viable way for the country to achieve an economic revival and sustainable and inclusive national development. So, efforts to be made in fighting hunger must prioritize agriculture and climate change adaptation. The agric sector deserves the attention that was given to Abuja airport runway” he stated.

    Sultan further called on the right authorities to act fast on the improvement of food securities.

    “As we prepare for the 2018 fiscal year, I would like to call on the government to ‘walk the Talk’ by putting money where our mouth is (as we popularly say in Nigeria) by increasing the amount of budget that goes to agriculture. Nigeria is the giant of Africa, no one deserves to go to bed hungry,” said sultan.

    Abdulazeez Musa, a representative of OXFAM in Nigeria also stated; “We are using this medium to reach out to a particular target group that is hard to reach. We know their interest is music and the Nigerian music today is the in thing, anywhere you go is Nigerian music so we are using that as an entry point to drive home our message to get a target population that we want, you know these are the population that also have the power to pressurize the government who also have access to these policy makers so that they can also talk to them.”

    MUSICAL taliban Sound Sultan, Timi Dakolo, Nosa, Soma of Big Brother and comedians Seyi Law, ATM and Ball Joint are among artistes set to grace the Voices of Hope Awards which will hold at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos on Friday, September 29, 2017.

    The awards which is part of events to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dignity For The Helpless Foundation (DHF), a non-governmental organisation, which was founded in 2006 by Samuel Brown, a musician, pastor and author. DHF was set up to care for less privileged members of the society.

    According to the co-ordinator of the awards, Ebitari David, 50 Nigerians who have showed care to less privileged Nigerians would be presented with an Appreciation Award in 12 different categories. DHF organises its activities within five pillars which include Healthcare Assistance, Youth Empowerment, Social Development, Poverty Alleviation and Legal Help Help Support.

    Through this, the NGO with the slogan, ‘passion to serve,’ has intervened in assisting less privileged Nigerians without the sponsorship of of government or corporate bodies.

    “My reason for living is to put smiles on people,” said Brown who is a pastor of New Life Amazing Grace Church, ShaSha, Lagos and has a single, titled ‘Na Grace.’

    Some other monthly and quarterly events which are organised by DHF include ‘Becoming an Entrepreneur,’ ‘Health Outreach,’ and ‘Legal Gathering.’

    Sound Sultan Launches Creative Mind Competition

    Oxfam in Nigeria Food Security Ambassador and ace musician Sound Sultan has launched a #United4Food campaign in collaboration with The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre). The project is part of a global food security campaign by Oxfam, and Voices for Food Security (VFS) which is the main collaborating network in Nigeria.

    According to the organisers of the competition, it is time for young Nigerians to get involved in agricultural issues and shape the narratives and direction of these conversations.

    Mr Sulaimon Arigbabu, Executive Secretary of HEDA said “This competition is not for everyone. It’s for those who have the capability to see how much farmers contribute to our society and economy at large and feel concerned about the numerous challenges confronting the average small scale farmers in Nigeria. It’s for youths who completely disregard the boxes of conformity and are not afraid to express themselves. Matter of fact, it is for youth who love food enough to care about those who grow the foods.

    There are  3 themes that applicants (students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria) can enter for. Entries are required to speak to at least one of these:

    a. Put your mouth where your Food is: SpeakUp for Farmers

    Ever wondered what would happen if farmers went on an indefinite strike? No jokes. It could happen! The #Beneueflooding wreaked so much havoc on so many farms and so did other flooding across the Country! Farmers need help. But importantly, they need you to #SpeakUp for them.     Where hunger begins, rationality ends!!! So, put on your ogbonge thinking ‘helmet’ and help draw attention to our call that NASS and the Presidency and all States Legislatures and Governors urgently make FOOD a RIGHT in Nigeria.

    c. More Money to Farmers, More FOOD on the TABLE. Lets Walk the Talk.

    The most important restructuring we need in Nigeria is Stomach Restructuring through correct agriculture. Small scale farmers need more money and support to continue to feed us and help grow this economy.     ACTDF’S ‘Unleash Your Talent 2017’ to hold grand finale on Sept 8

    The stage is finally set for the grand finale of the ‘Unleash Your Talent 2017’ of African Children Talent Discovery Foundation (ACTDF)’s Unleash Your Talent 2017, an initiative that seeks to discover talents in singing, dancing and acting.

    The event has been scheduled for September 8, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

    Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, president of the foundation, Noah Dallaji, said the show will give hope to young Nigerians in despair; while integrating them for the purpose of nation building.

    He expressed optimism that the grand finale would afford participants the chance to celebrate life and enjoy it to the fullest.

    “When we see our efforts impact positively on the needy and watch them, in turn, use their God given talents to influence the larger society positively, we become satisfied,” he said.

    He explained that the foundation had continued through thick and thin to uplift human lives in a most spectacular and humane way across the nation and beyond the shores of Africa.

    He added that while the foundation scouts for talents and help in developing same, it believes that harnessing human resources could help improve all aspects of tourism.

    Dallaji said the foundation would use its participation at the summit to showcase the potentials in Nigerian youths to the world.

    He said the winners would also join the foundation on a trip to New York for the United Nations (UN) summit later in September.

    Dallaji said the first and second runners up at the grand finale would get varied contracts in their respective fields worth millions of naira and cash prizes.

    Some of the celebrities expected at the event include ACTDF’s ambassadors- Ejike Asiegbu, Emeka Rollas, Tonto Dikeh, Thelma Okoduwa Ojiji, Lilian Esoro, Alex Usifo, Kate Henshaw, Marvelous Benji, Black Solo, Faze, Yemi Blaq and Sound Sultan among others.

    Also expected at the occasion is the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike who is going to host the massive guests expected in the state on the said date.
