Spyro: I thought my collaborations with Davido, Mayorkun would give me a career boost

Singer Spyro has shared a heartfelt account of his struggles in the music industry, revealing that after collaborating with music stars Davido and Mayorkun, he expected a career setback.

Speaking during an interview on HipTV’s “Trending”, Spyro said he believed his breakthrough had arrived when the song featuring Davido and Mayorkun became popular.

However, he said that when his song gained traction, he was suddenly forgotten, and his former collaborators became unreachable.

Speaking in an interview on Hiptv Trending, Spyro recalled feeling devastated, often breaking down in tears.

“I had a song back then, and I had Davido and Mayorkun on it. I thought my life was about to change,” he recalled. “The song came out and it was big, but suddenly everything went back down. They stopped picking up my calls. I’d sit on the staircase and cry.”

Spyro described the experience as emotionally devastating, admitting there were moments he felt abandoned by those he once worked closely with.

He also took a swipe at some gospel artists, accusing them of prioritising money over genuine faith.

He, however, commended singer Tems for her consistency and strength, calling her a powerful role model for young women in the music industry.

“She’s really talented and has remained true to herself. That’s the kind of example we need,” he added.

“People who claim to be gospel ministers are just artists. They are just in the business to make money. They’re just like us in the Afrobeat industry. Then there’s a lot of pressure on female artists. Tems is holding out decently. One of the biggest in the world. She has it together, we should put Tems out there for the world to see, for our girls to look up to as role models”, he said.

Gospel, secular artists seek financial gain – Spyro

Singer Spyro has argued that many gospel artists are motivated by financial gain, similar to secular artists.

Speaking in an interview on HipTV ‘Trending’, Spyro said there’s no difference between gospel artists and their secular counterparts in terms of financial motivations.

He said: “The people that claim to be gospel artists or gospel ministers are just artists -they are in the business to make money just like us in the Afrobeats industry.”

Recall that some industry stakeholders believe that gospel artists should be paid for their work, citing the financial realities of pursuing a music career while others argue that gospel music is a ministry and should not be treated as a business.

Spyro also highlighted the challenges faced by female artists in the music industry.

He emphasised the importance of role models like Tems, who has maintained decency and integrity while achieving global success.

By holding up Tems as an example, Spyro encourages young female artists to prioritize their values and artistry.

“There is a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is holding it down decently yet she is one of the biggest [female artists] in the world right now. She is decent. She has it together.

“Sometimes, I’m just like, how is she able to do this? We should put Tems out there for our young ladies to be looking up to as a role model,” he said.

He wrote on Instagram: “The people that owe the most are the RICH. Always wanting free things, especially your so-called billionaires. They can spend hundreds of millions on women, but when it comes to paying for value tendered, they begin to misbehave.

“Sha don’t bring it near me o, I worked really hard to be here and I ain’t pøor so if you want my services you pay my price. Simple”.

I’ll never marry without N500m in my account – Spyro

Singer Spyro has stated that he will not tie the knot until he has amassed N500m in his bank account.

In his post on Instagram, Spyro reflected on his challenging upbringing and his determination to secure a stable financial future for himself and his future family.

He also emphasised the importance of proper guidance, urging his followers to focus on breaking the cycle of poverty, insisting that it is crucial for parents to direct their children toward a brighter future.

He expressed concern that many individuals in his generation seem to prioritise superficial pursuits over significant personal growth, describing it as “gallivanting and indulging in frivolities.”

Spyro shared that he was not privileged enough to have toys as a child and faced numerous obstacles.

Spyro further stressed that financial provision is not enough; parents must also instill strong moral values and a sense of responsibility.

He wrote: “I blame all these on bad parenting….”Train up a child (male/female) the way he should go and when he grows, he will not depart from it. A lot of us should be focused on ending the circle of poverty so that our children won’t be victims too but unfortunately, my generation just dey gallivant about, indulging in frivolities..hmm

“I was talking to someone earlier today about how I was never opportune to have toys as a kid; my childhood wasn’t the easiest, but one thing I told myself from a very tender age. My kids will never have to go through what I did and so I put myself to rigorous work. In fact, I will never marry without having N500m in my account. I fought, cried, and prayed, and today, I can afford to give my kids the life they want so they don’t become prey as I almost became one.

This should be what we should focus on not criticizing.

“Nevertheless, it’s not enough to provide, it is very Germane to also train them with the fear of God as that’s what separates a man from beast tendencies. The spirit of God in man is what regulates him and keeps him level-headed. Didn’t the Bible make reference to the heart of man? Desperately wicked who can know it? God over man is what keeps him sane”.

Spyro responds to Paulo Okoye’s claims, counters allegations

Singer Spyro has replied former label boss Paulo Okoye after the latter debunked his claims of struggling financially while signed to the label.

Spyro had alleged in an interview that he had to take a loan to support himself, despite Okoye’s claims of spending N12 million on him.

In a series of posts on his Instagram story, Spyro maintained that he didn’t lie about his experiences and that Okoye’s receipts actually proved his point.

He shared a personal anecdote about being chased out of a hotel at Wembley and having to rely on the kindness of strangers for food and accommodation.

Spyro acknowledged that he appreciates Okoye’s support and the opportunities he provided, but emphasised that he faced significant challenges as an upcoming artist under the label.

He hinted at the mistreatment of upcoming artists in the industry, sharing his own experiences of being belittled and treated poorly by label workers.

Despite Okoye’s absence from the country for most of the time, Spyro praised him for handling a specific incident well, but reiterated that the label’s treatment of him was inadequate.

Spyro wrote on his Insta Story: “I didn’t lie, Oga @pauloo2104. Your sheets further prove my point, and these travel figures tho. I didn’t vet it because I remember being chased out of my hotel after One Africa at Wembley because the room was booked for one day and I was in the cold for hours before @superkunle got his sister to book me an Airbnb, was there without food and the lady in the house was the one that fed me for two days before I moved my flight forward and ran to Lagos and till date nobody asked how I fared.

“I am a very appreciative person, and you know it, sir. I appreciate you for putting me on all, and this was all part of the process for me to be the Spyro I am today, and of this, I am grateful, and Baba, if we are to say the truth, you know you and I are cool to date. We did a tour together recently, and you were really nice, we had fun. All love baba

“Should I also go into detail about how upcoming artists are treated by label workers? Oh, I was treated like shit, like my words meant nothing. I was battling an inferiority complex at that point, and they made it worse. One of the workers one day then spoke to me like I didn’t even exist. I reported the case to Oga Paulo, and in all fairness, he handled it well and scolded the person, but he was never present in the country most of the time. If I begin to talk wetin my eyes see, but that’s no talk for today, but yeah, no one cares how the artiste feels; after all, he is just an acquired commodity. This was me as a graduate of the University of Ibadan. I saw hell”.

I face discrimination as a ‘Jesus boy’ singer – Spyro

Afrobeats singer Spyro has spoken out about the difficulties he face in the industry due to his public proclamation of faith in Jesus Christ.

In a recent interview with Echo Room, Spyro claimed Banky W, a popular R&B star-turned-pastor, warned him about the challenges of being a Christian in the industry.

He mentioned Banky W’s similar struggles after proclaiming his faith publicly.

According to him, Banky W allegedly told him that his career flourished when he was perceived as a “bad boy,” but faced opposition when he decided to take a more godly approach.

According to Spyro, being labeled a “Jesus boy” has led to discrimination and lack of support from industry moguls.

He claimed that many media outlets and influencers refuse to promote his music despite his talent and success.

Spyro stated that this is a deliberate attempt to “pull him down” because of his faith.

He said: “My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination. I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand and I’ve received the biggest criticisms,” he said.

“If you want to be truthful to yourself, how many media moguls support or post me when I drop songs? You see them posting other artists but outside from the blogs that I paid to post me, how many media moguls post me?

“Do you see these guys post me? Sometimes, I ask myself why because people who are not doing as well as I am, they post them. The answer is simple; once you come out and declare Christ publicly, you enter a war.

“It’s like the whole system is designed to pull you down. Banky W told me that his problem started in the industry the moment he proclaimed Christ.
“He told me to be sure that I am ready for this. He said when he was a ‘bad boy’, everything was going well but immediately he decided to do it in godly way, war started.”

Spyro, Ubi Franklin bicker over alleged $5,000 fraud

Singer Spyro has alleged music executive Ubi Franklin used Davido’s name to scam him.

In an interview on Echoo Room podcast, Spyro claimed Ubi Franklin approached him to perform at an event, claiming Davido had invited him and would get $5,000.

However, Spyro clarified Davido had no knowledge of the arrangement.

He said: “I have an issue with Ubi Franklin. Ubi was one of the people I ‘respected’. Ubi just came down and said David said we should come perform at the birthday party that he was invited to that he was going to give us 5k. I called him to the side and said ‘bro first of all, I don’t charge 5k.’ My Nigerian currency wey I dey charge, the least I would do is N20 million.

“On getting there, David was on stage, he came back from the stage and Ubi just came to me, he said ‘you’re going on the stage now’ before you know it, MC don announce, Spyro! And right after, I said okay Ubi, shebi you don sha make me, I don perform now, where my money wey you say David say him go give us?

“He said ‘no don’t go and buzz David o, he’s not the one actually, let me tell you the truth, he’s not the one that said you guys should come and do the show’. I was like are you kidding me? So David doesn’t even know anything about this, so you just used David’s name, this is broad daylight scam bro!”

But Ubi Franklin denied the allegations, dismissing them as misinformation aimed at damaging his reputation.

He countered Spyro owes him N10.5 million, being 10% of the cost of a car he helped Spyro purchase.

Ubi Franklin demanded that Spyro pays the owed commission and offered to settle the debt by offsetting the $5,000 he’s holding.

He said: “I will not allow anyone to destroy my name. And please, it’s time you all stop trying to use David’s name to make your story sweet or get people to pay attention to your story.

“Why would I tell David’s friend who is a growing artiste that David said when I know you have direct links to him? How does this make sense?

“I don’t even understand this at all and gullible people will believe ( I have never used David to take anything from anyone ) you want to use me to start your PR for the year, it’s not me cos a lot is at stake and I won’t let you do that.

“Pay me my 10% from the car I helped you buy and told you to pay me my 10% you said I should wait till you finish paying. I know you have finished paying since December. Kindly credit me the balance cos I have 5k dollars meant for you and you have N10.5m meant for me. If we do plus and minus, you owe me N2.5million cos 5k Dollars is 8m.”
