  • StarTimes ON saves 40% data cost

    StarTimes has launched a new brand, StarTimes ON, for its online video streaming service with its App can save 20- 40 per cent data cost for users when they are watching videos with the application, ON Operation Director, Ariel Lin, has said.

    “The data saving is realised with adopting our self-developed and world’s leading video encoding technology,” he stated, adding that the encoding technology will increase the data compression ratio greatly, but meanwhile won’t damage the video quality.

    Besides the advanced encoding technology, StarTimes satellite transmitting system will also help reduce internet bandwidth cost of StarTimes ON CDNs.

    “That’s a natural advantage of StarTimes as a leading digital TV operator…and yes, we have satellites in the space,” Lin explained.

    In further, StarTimes ON is also cooperating with over 20 African telecom operators and has co-established CDNs in different African countries.

    The integrated CDNs with telecom networks lower huge internet bandwidth fees for StarTimes ON and telecom companies, being able to provide high quality video data bundle products for users at affordable prices.

    And the high-efficient and stable CDNs also require less space, less power consumption and less maintaining costs.

    Lin said: “StarTimes ON utilises video cloud platform based on hybrid networks to provide stable video streaming service to users. The hybrid Cloud network guarantees the full internet coverage, flexible expansion and quick start of StarTimes ON service.”

  • StarTimes drums support for people living with HIV/AIDS

    As part of activities to mark the 2018 World AIDS Day, pay-TV company, StarTimes have called for more support to be given to Nigerians living with the virus across the country.

    This was communicated during on the sidelines of the 2018 World AIDS Day commemoration event held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja as it joined other stakeholders in the fight to increase awareness and fight against HIV/AIDS in a bid to eradicate the virus completely from Nigeria and Africa at large.

    According to Justin Zhang, the CEO, StarTimes Nigeria, “StarTimes is committed to the complete eradication of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria using its media footprint across the country and its’ ability to reach millions of Nigerians even in villages where aid workers are not able to access” He added that “the company would assist in the area of broadcasting informative content and engaging youths via entertaining mobile engagements that educate”

    Also speaking, Abdul Dangirma, the National Secretary, Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) commended the Federal Government for its effort to treatment and prevention of spread of the virus while calling for more to be done in the area of user-fee charged to beneficiaries of antiretroviral drugs.

    In May 2017, UNAIDS and StarTimes signed a memorandum of cooperation in Beijing to officials a cooperation to reduce the impact of HIV across Africa by disseminating messages to the general public to increase awareness of HIV and UNAIDS’ work and to reduce the stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV.

  • Christmas: StarTimes offers 50% discount on Subscription

    Ahead of the Christmas celebration, Pay TV Company, StarTimes has announced a 50% discount off subscription rates this for its subscribers.

    According to the company, the offer kicks off on December 1 till January 31, 2019.

    During this period, subscribers who renew their subscription for two months will automatically get 50% discount on their 2nd month subscription.

    Commenting on the initiative, the Public Relations Manager, StarTimes Nigeria, Kunmi Balogun noted that “The Christmas season often come with a lot of expenses hence our reason to make it a bit more bearable by offering 50% discount when you pay for 2 months”

    ‘‘When subscribers pay for two months on any bouquet, between December 1st and January 31st, they enjoy 50% discount on the second month plus instant gifts at any StarTimes business hall nationwide”

    He reaffirmed that during this period, blockbuster Nollywood movies and those in movies would be aired by its self-owned Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba channels to provide unlimited entertainment to subscribers.

  • Oga Bello, Dayo Amusa, others star in new series

    Veteran actor, Adebayo Salami popularly known as Oga Bello, has completed the production of a 26-episode Yoruba series titled ‘Alagbara’, produced exclusively for a pay-TV company, StarTimes.

    Reports say that the series is currently undergoing post-production edits to bring it up to top standards.

    Oga Bello disclosed in a statement that the partnership with the pay-TV on this project was borne out of his desire in promoting the Nigerian culture through the production of educative and enlightenment movies and series that cut across everyone living in this society.

    According to him, ‘Alagbara is a beautifully crafted indigenous series that sheds light into lives of different men from all walks of life and how they are controlled, manipulated, influenced, and reshaped by the women in their lives’

  • Startimes set to sponsor 22 children on healthcare

    Desirous of creating a sustainable social value of meeting the needs of the less privilege in the society, StarTimes is donating to Save Our Soul (SOS) Children Villages Nigeria, to support the health care needs of 22 children under their care.

    The company revealed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that it will con-tinue to add value to the society while uplifting the lives and general wellbeing of young people. According to its Public Relations Manager, Kunmi Balogun, the global CSR strategy of StarTimes seeks to enhance the quality of life of youths and children across Africa and StarTimes Nigeria has demonstrated this through vari-ous CSR projects across Nigeria.

    “This initiative is in furtherance to our initial support to SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria a few months ago. Having visited their facility in Gwagwalada, Abuja, we realized there was need for further support, outside of what is contained in the MOU especially in the area of healthcare for some of children in the facility, hence the decision to give more funds towards this course.”

    Balogun added that StarTimes focuses on children because they are the most vul-nerable in the society and require the most attention. “Less privileged children suf-fer the most because they go through unthinkable things in a bid for survival. We will stop at nothing to ensure that their wellbeing is taken care of to the best of our capacity.” He concluded.

  • Freestyle Football: Subscribers hail StarTimes for live coverage

    StarTimes subscribers across Africa have commended the pay-TV company for transmitting live the first ever African Freestyle Football Championship.

    The 3-day event which took place at Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos saw freestyles from various part of the continent compete fiercely for the star prize and was broadcasted live on StarTimes mobile app and on ST Sports Focus Channel 240/250, much to the excitement of subscribers.

    Some of the subscribers who took to social media to express their satisfaction hailed the organisers for a well put together competition and commended StarTimes for the quality of broadcast and extending the viewership to its mobile app for free.

    African Freestyle Football Championship 2018 organized by Feet ‘n’ Tricks International and broadcasted live on StarTimes produced the first African Freestyle Football Champion from Ivory Coast. Ivorian, Abdul Titi Kone emerged winner with a prize money of $3,000 and a GAC car while the 1st runner up, 2nd runner up and 3rd runner up also went home with various prizes.

  • UNAIDS, StarTimes unveil mobile app on HIV/AIDS awareness

    UNAIDS and StarTimes are collaborating on increasing HIV/AIDS awareness among young people with mobile online video application.

    This was unveiled during a meeting with First Lady of the Republic of Malawi Gertrude Mutharika, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé and StarTimes Group Vice President Guo Ziqi in China.

    The theme of the meeting was  “Value of new media in African HIV/AIDS Prevention Campaign”.

    Sidibé said: “We have seen progress in most countries today, but the biggest challenge that we face is complacency. The young people don’t have information, they don’t have knowledge, so they don’t protect themselves…So, information, knowledge and education, and that’s why StarTimes is very important for us.

    “I just want to say sharing information, bringing knowledge and making sure that we can change young people will be key for ending AIDS.”

    Sidibé said for most African countries, 70 per cent of the population are below the age of 35 and they are not getting information. “Our recent approach will completely change the situation and help us to go for a generation free of AIDS,” he added.

    With smartphone use and internet penetration soaring, Africa is set for a communication way revolution. Similarly in Europe, US and China, more and more African young people, get used to watching stream videos on phones.

    Ziqi said: “Based on this trend, StarTimes launched its video streaming service in African market with StarTimes App in June. Within three  months, StarTimes App has had 8 million downloads and the figure is expected to be 15 million at the end of this year.” He added that StarTimes App right now is streaming the “Zero Discrimination” PSAs as a trial cooperation with UNAIDS through the online video.

  • Europa League: A gift to Arsenal, Chelsea fans – StarTimes

    StarTimes Nigeria on Tuesday revealed that adding the UEFA Europa League competition to its list of football offerings is simply a gift to fans of Arsenal and Chelsea Football clubs who also happen to be its subscribers.

    In a statement on Tuesday, Kunmi Balogun, the company’s Public Relations Manager described the surprise move as “simply a gift to all our subscribers for their love and for sticking with StarTimes and for Chelsea and Arsenal fans who have been wondering how to watch the games on Thursday”.

    According to him, “We have signed a 3-year exclusive broadcast rights of the Europa League across sub-Saharan Africa. This means that our 10 million plus subscribers all over Africa can enjoy the games from the comfort of their homes or on the StarTimes mobile app, because they deserve it”

    The company had on September 1 announced a crash in subscription fee of its classic bouquet, reviewing the price downward to N1,900 from N2,600, a move which received many positive reactions from subscribers across the country.
