  • Man gets six months for stealing

    An Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State has sentenced a 35-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Segun Olufeyimi, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing and escaping from custody.

    The Magistrate, Mr. Banji Ayeomoni, found the convict guilty of a two-count charge of stealing and escaping from police custody.

    Ayeomoni, who did not give the convict any option of fine, said the sentence would act as a deterrent to others.

    The convict, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

    The prosecutor, Zedekiah Orogbemi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on February 19, about 4:15 am at 45, Oluwanisola Street, Okitipupa.

    He said the accused burgled the home of Emabire Olowofoyeku, the complainant, and stole one necklace valued at N2,500, one Itel phone and one Techno phone worth N18,000 and N15,000.

    Orogbemi said the accused escaped from police custody a day to his arraignment, but was later rearrested by the police.

    He said the offence contravened sections 390 (9) and 135 (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

  • Man jailed three months for stealing girlfriend’s phone

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, yesterday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Daniel Bidem, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing his girlfriend’s  phone, valued at N47, 000.

    Bidem, of Garki II, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing.

    The convict was sentenced after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

    The Judge, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave him an option of N20,000 fine.

    He ordered Bidem to pay N40,000 as compensation to the complainant, and warned him to desist from crimes.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Dalhatu Zannah, told the court that Mibiola Olajumoke, of 13, Matadi Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station on February 19.

    He told the court that on February 16, about 2:30 pm, Bidem, the complainant’s boyfriend, took her to a hotel at Wuse II to buy her food.

    “Bidem dishonestly and smartly stole the complainant’s Techno CX phone, worth N47, 000,’’ the prosecutor said.

    He said the convict sold the phone to an unknown person at Wuse market at N10,000.

    The prosecutor told the court that efforts to recover the phone proved abortive.

    He said during police investigation, Bidem confessed to selling the phone for N10, 000.

    Zannah said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    Court jails man for stealing wire

    An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Edo State has sentenced Tochukwu Nwachukwu to two years’ imprisonment for stealing a cable wire and a generator, both valued at N168,000.

    He was jailed after he pleaded guilty to the four-count charge.

    Nwachukwu was said to have committed the offence on February 1, at 42, Wire Road, Benin City.

    His co-accused, Emmanuel Felix, and Samson Simeon, however, pleaded not guilty and were remanded in prison custody.

    Police prosecutor Patrick Agbonifo told the court that the offences contravened sections 413, 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol II Laws of the defunct Bendel State, now applicable in Edo State.

    The Magistrate, F.E. Akhere, jailed Nwachukwu two years. He was, however, given an option of N40,000 fine.

    Couple, two others caught on CCTV ‘stealing’at Oshodi

    Four persons, includinga  couple, Segun Latoye and Toyin Samuel, have been arrested  after being caught on camera in Oshodi, dispossessing passersby of their belongings.

    The others are Jelili Ganiu, 19, and Samson Owolabi, 23.

    The couple were caught on camera thrice stealing from people.

    A statement by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS said the couple dispossessed a woman of her bag containing two mobi1le phones and an unspecified amount of money.

    “After hypnotising their victim, they fled with her belongings. The woman regained her consciousness few minutes later and reported the incident to RRS officers who contacted the person in charge of the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) mobile camera. Their pictures were shown to selected people in Oshodi who could identify them and notify RRS on their whereabouts. They were later arrested. The suspects, who claimed to be husband and wife confessed after watching their video,” RRS said.

    Ganiu and Owolabi were caught on camera stealing what looked like mobile phones from a passerby on the pedestrian bridge.

    They were monitored through the camera exchanging the stolen items with another suspect, who is  at large, before returning to the flyover.

    The suspects were trailed by RRS operatives and arrested near the bridge.

    They confessed to RRS that they stole an Infinix Hot mobile phone from a passer-by on the bridge, saying the person they gave it to,  keeps  the stolen items.

    Jelili added that the fleeing  Omo Nla sells the stolen items and they later share the proceeds.

    The suspect was quoted as saying :  ‘’Owolabi and I are conductors in Oshodi but when there is no  work or we arrive late at the park to reunite with our bosses, we steal phones, purses and other valuables from the users of the pedestrian bridge in Oshodi’’.

    Police spokesman Chike Oti said  the suspects would be charged to court soon.

  • Passenger accused of stealing N1m on board faces trial

    The Lagos Airport Police Command will today arraign a male suspect, who allegedly stole N1, 008,000 aboard an Air Peace flight from Abuja to Lagos.

    Command spokesman Joseph Alabi told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos that the suspect would be arraigned at an Ogba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for stealing.

    He said the suspect, who lives in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, allegedly stole N504, 000, N350, 000 and N154,000 aboard the flight.

    Alabi said the money belonged to Messrs. Olaniye and Abubakar Jimoh, his co-passengers.

    He said the suspect was apprehended by vigilant passengers and crew while pilfering from luggage aboard the flight, about 11am on Saturday.

    Alabi said the suspect was thereafter handed over to the command upon landing in Lagos for investigation and prosecution.

  • Pupil gets six strokes of the cane for stealing

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, has ordered that an 18-year-old pupil, Victor Obadiah, be given six strokes of the cane for stealing a phone.

    Obadiah, who lives at Kado village, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of theft.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty, and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    He said the court might not be lenient with him  next time.

    The prosecutor, Mrs. Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that the matter was reported by Deyoung Ikpi of Dape village, Abuja, at Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on February 10.

    She said the convict on that day snatched  the complainant’s phone at Angwa Cement bus stop, Abuja, while going home.

    Avhioboh said the convict was chased and caught, while the complainant recovered his phone.

    The prosecutor said during investigation, the convict confessed to the crime.

    She said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    Female banker arraigned for stealing

    A 27-year-old female banker, Ogunumoye Oluwaseun, was yesterday arraigned at an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for allegedly pilfering depositors’ money.

    She was alleged to have stolen N691,050, belonging to Astra Polaris Micro Finance Bank (APMFB) in Abeokuta.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing.

    She denied the charge, but police prosecutor Sunday Eigbejiale insisted that the accused committed the offence from May 2016 to August 2017 at Astra Polaris Micro Finance Bank, Onikolobo branch, Abeokuta.

    He said the accused, a marketer, collected money from customers and failed to remit same to the bank.

    “The accused collected N691,050 from customers and failed to remit it to her employer.

    “When the theft was discovered, the accused absconded from work from October 4, 2017 and efforts to recover the money proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.

    The offence contravenes Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

    The Chief Magistrate, Adeola Adelaja, granted her bail at N500, 000 with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till March 21 for hearing.

    Transporter arraigned for ‘stealing’ goats

    The Ekiti State Police Command yesterday arraigned a commercial tricycle operator, Osunla Idowu, 30, at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing four she-goats.

    Police prosecutor Sergeant Monica Ikebuilo told the court that the accused committed the offence on February 3 at 8:30 p.m on Olorunsogo Street in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    She said the accused stole the she-goats valued at the of N100,000, property of Mrs. Apeke Bakare of Olorunsogo.

    Idowu was said to have packed the animals in his tricycle, popularly called Keke NAPEP.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravenes Section 383 of the Criminal Code, Cap C. 16, Vol. 1, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, while his lawyer, Mr Tunde Falade, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms.

    The lawyer promised the court that the accused would not jump bail.

    Presiding Magistrate Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo granted bail to the accused for N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the matter till March 15 for further hearing.

     

  • Farmers in court for allegedly stealing tubers of yam

    The police yesterday arraigned four farmers at a Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja for allegedly stealing tubers of yam.

    The defendants are Philip Tekaa, Joseph Sabe, Demenege Sabe and Nyiyong Gabriel.

    The defendants, residents of Iddo Sarki, Airport road, Abuja, are standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal trespass, joint act and theft.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Adeniyi Oyeyemi, told the court that Colonel Solomon Ngbede (retd) reported the matter at Garki Police Station on December 20, 2016.

    He said the complainant alleged that on December 19, 2016, the four defendants trespassed into his farm land and stole tubers of yam.

    Oyeyemi alleged that the defendants were apprehended with the loot and they confessed that Sunday Peters of the same address sent them to commit the crime.

    According to the prosecutor, “the total value of yam and products stolen and damaged was worth N470,000.’’

    He said the offences contravened sections 348, 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    The judge, Mr. Sidi Bello, granted each of them bail at N100,000  and  a surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the matter till April 10 for hearing.

    Court remands Ondo monarch, four others for alleged stealing

    A Magistrates’ Court sitting at Idanre Magisterial District of Ondo State at the weekend remanded a traditional ruler of Bolorunduro, near Egbede-Owena in Idanre Local Government Area, Oba Oluade Adeniyi.

    The monarch was remanded alongside his four accomplices for alleged stealing, defrauding and malicious damages of people’s property.

    The charge sheet reads: “Oba Oluade Adeniyi, 54, and four others – Eniola Isaac, 49; Olajimi Akinyosotu, 40; Ade-Olubodun, 35 and Olowogbade Moyinoluwa, 38, sometime in September 2016 and March 2017 at Idanre in the Idanre Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony to wit obtaining money under false pretence/stealing, assault/malicious damages.

    “The accused persons on the same day and time in the aforementioned magisterial district did, with intent to defraud the following persons of their property, including a cash sum of about N1 million from the inhabitants of Agbelere camp through collection of illegal fees under the name of Bolorunduro Development, also stole N1 million from the inhabitants of Agbelere camp.

    “The monarch and others did steal N22,000 property of Ajigbade Samson and another cash of N6,000, property of Kola Oladayo.

    “The accused also did steal N10,000, one Tecno handset valued at N22,000, property of Ojo Omolekulo and threatened the lives of some people, including Ajetomobi, Kola Oladejo, Ajigbade Samson and Ojo Omolekulo by attacking them with a gun and cutlasses.”

    The accused were said to have unlawfully and maliciously damaged two motorcycles, one Honda and Haojue motorcycles valued at N200,000, property of Ojo Omolekulo and Ajigbade Samson.

    The alleged offences contradict and are punishable under sections 516, 419, 383, 390, 86 and 451 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

    The state government’s lawyer Olorunfemi Ayegbusi said since the matter was taken over by the police, the Office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) was consulted for legal advice.

    He prayed the court to act on the recommendation of the office of DPP, dated January 29.

    Counsel to the accused, Adeyinka Adeyosoye, called for the report of the DPP and asked for a copy.

    Chief Magistrate Mrs Yinka Omole said: “Consequent upon the earlier bail granted the accused, which the court lacked jurisdiction to grant, it is hereby revoked because the court lacks the jurisdiction over the case.”

    The court ordered the five accused to be remanded in prison custody till they are arraigned before a competent court of jurisdiction.
