  • Man arraigned for allegedly stealing cocoa trees

    A 37-year-old man, Kunle Omotosho, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for allegedly stealing cocoa trees.

    The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of malicious damage and theft of cocoa trees.

    The prosecutor, Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 25, about 10 am, at Igbo Aso Farm, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that Omotosho damaged the cocoa trees, valued at N100,000, belonging to Chief Sunday Ogunleye.

    Leranmo alleged that the accused stole logs of tree, valued at N120,000, belonging to the complainant.

    He said the offences contravened sections 451 and 390 (9) of the

    Criminal Code Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

    His counsel, Mr. Peter Ogunkinle, urged the court to grant him bail, promising he will not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the defendant at N50,000 with two sureties, who must have verifiable addresses and voter cards.

    She adjourned the case till November 21 for hearing.

    18-year-old charged to court for stealing phones

    Eighteen-year-old Tope Ojo yesterday appeared at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft of three phones, valued at N20,000.

    Ojo, of unknown address, is facing a charge of stealing.

    Police prosecutor Monica Ikebuilo alleged that the accused committed the offence on October 14 at Atikankan Street, Ado-Ekiti.

    She alleged that the accused went to the shop of Yahaya Saadi, and stole a Nokia phone, valued at N8,000, and two Itel phones, valued at N12,000.

    The prosecutor said the accused had been stealing phones in that area, and was caught by the complainant and his friends.

    She said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    Ikebuilo urged the court to adjourn the case, to enable her study the case file and assemble witnesses.

    Counsel to the accused Mr. Simeon Ojo requested the court to grant his client bail, promising he will not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Omolola Akosile, granted the accused bail at N20,000 with two sureties, and adjourned the case till November 9 for hearing.

  • Labourer jailed 10 months for stealing tyres

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Nasarawa State, has sentenced a 23-year-old labourer, Dominic Etim, to 10 months’ imprisonment for stealing four tyres valued at N80, 000.

    Etim, who lives at Aso B in Mararaba, was arraigned on a charge of theft.

    The Judge, Mr. Albert Maga, however, gave the convict an option of N8, 000 fine.

    He said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt; therefore, the convict was guilty as charged.

    “The prosecution presented three witnesses and had established beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty.

    “I hereby sentence you (Dominic Etim) to 10 months’ imprisonment with an option of N8, 000 fine,” Maga ruled.

    He ordered the convict to pay N70, 000 as restitution to the complainant for the stolen tyres.

    The labourer was first arraigned on August 28 for theft, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Agabi Auta told the court that the case was reported at Aso Police Station by the complainant, Pius Ejiofor of Tudun Wada, Mararaba, on August 26.

    He said on the same date at 8a.m., the accused entered the complainant’s mechanic workshop at Mararaba while he was making a phone call and stole four tyres valued at N80, 000.

    Auta said the accused also stole the complainant’s clothes valued at N10, 000.

    “Etim was seen on August 26 by the complainant at Mararaba when he was about to board a bus and was arrested.”

     

  • Man arraigned for ‘stealing’ girlfriend’s tablet’

    A 20-year-old man, Akeem Alhassan, who allegedly stole his girlfriend’s tablet

    valued at N45,000 and sold it, has been arraigned at a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Akpan Ikem said the accused committed the offence on September 18 at J5, Seme border between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

    He said the accused’s girlfriend, Beatrice Agbor, gave him the tablet for keep when she was travelling.

    “The accused sold the tablet and used the money to buy cartons of biscuits.”

    Ikem said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Jimoh Adefioye, granted bail to the accused at N100,000 with a surety and adjourned the case till October 25 for mention.

  • Man gets two years for stealing church property

    A 27-year-old driver, Ishaq Bala, who broke into a church and stole drums and iron rods, has been jailed two years.

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court in Nasarawa said Bala, who lives at Mararaba, was found guilty of the three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking and theft.

    The Judge, Mr. Albert Maga, held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the defendant was guilty.

    “He is hereby sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for the three-count charge,” he said.

    Maga, however, gave Bala an option of N10,000 fine, warning him to desist from crime.

    The accused was first arraigned on August 18 on a three-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Agabi Auta told the court that Pastor Habila Dasat of Cocin Church, Base 4, Aku village, Mararaba, lodged a complaint against the accused on August 15 at `A’ Divisional Police Station.

    He said the accused and three others at large, broke into the church through the fence and stole a set of drums and iron rods.

    “The security guard apprehended the accused, others ran away, but the stolen items were recovered from him.”

    The offences contravene sections 97, 288 and 347 of the Penal Code.

  • Accused in court for ‘stealing’

    A 34-year-old man, Wale Adegoke, was yesterday brought before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for alleged break in and stealing.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adegoke of Apete, Ibadan, is facing a two-count charge of break in and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Olalekan Adegbite, told the court that Adegoke, on October 1, allegedly broke and entered into the office of Omenai Shulemate.

    He alleged that the suspect entered the office and stole N55, 580 found on the table and one HP laptop valued at N50, 000.

    Adegbite said the value of the stolen items was N105, 580, belonging to the complainant of 2, Olusogo Street, Mokola, Ibadan.

    He said the offences were allegedly committed on October 1 about 8a.m. in Veterinary, Mokola, Ibadan.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 390 (9) and 413 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    Adegoke pleaded not guilty.

    Counsel to the defendant, Mr. O. Erezeifor, asked the court to grant his client bail in most liberal term.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.K Omotosho, granted the accused bail at N50, 000 with two sureties.

    She said one of the sureties must be a relation to the accused.

    Omotosho adjourned the case till November 7 for hearing.

    Boy jailed for stealing church’s property

    An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced a boy, Muideen Nasiru, to 39 months imprisonment for stealing aluminum frames and other items, worth N500,000, from a church.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.K. Omotosho, sentenced Nasiru, 18, after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, break-in and stealing.

    Omotosho said the convict should spend his prison term at Agodi Prisons, Ibadan.

    “The young boy is a thief, no doubt; he has a godfather, who buys stolen items from him.

    “The society will be better for it if he is incarcerated; he may learn a thing or two in prison.

    “He is hereby sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on count one, 18 months on count two and 18 months on count three,” she said.

    Omotosho held that the sentence should run concurrently.

    Police prosecutor Olalekan Adegbite told the court that the accused committed the offences with others at large at Christ’s Ambassador Church, Inalende, Ibadan.

    He said the accused stole four church bells, a drum set, window frames and four gas lamps.

    Adegbite said the property belonged to the complainant, Rev. Faith Ikumapayi, the church founder.

    The offences contravene sections 390 (9), 415’and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2,000.

    Man in court for stealing cosmetics

    A 30-year-old man, Fasheyi Olateju, has appeared at an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun State for alleged theft of cosmetics, valued at N785, 297.

    He is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Police prosecutor Sunday Ajayi said the accused committed the offences in 2015 in Omobolanle, Osogbo.

    He said the accused broke into AB Fountain General Services Ltd and stole cosmetics, worth N785,297.

    The accused was apprehended by the police after the theft, Ajayi said.

    The offences contravene sections 383, 516 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

    The accused pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Mr. Okobie Najite, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Sodamade Fatima, granted the accused bail at N500,000 with one surety.

    She said the surety must be resident in the court’s jurisdiction and should show evidence of tax payment.

    The case was adjourned till November 11 for mention.

    Man gets two years for stealing cables

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja has sentenced Abdullahi Inuwa to two years’ imprisonment for vandalising a transformer and stealing its power supply cables.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Inuwa an option of N25,000 fine.

    Sadiq advised him to desist from crime, and hoped that the sentence will act as a deterrent to others.

    “It is even dangerous to go close to a transformer,” he said.

    Inuwa, who lives at Jabi Garage, Abuja, was convicted on a three-count charge of conspiracy, trespass and theft, after he pleaded guilty.

    He had prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, claiming he acted in ignorance.

    The prosecutor, Mrs, Florence Avhioboh, told the court that Inuwa scaled a fence after stealing the cables but was arrested at Panda Supermarket, Jabi, where he jumped into.

    She said Mr Chukwu Ugbo, of the supermarket, reported the case at Utako Police Station, Abuja, on September 19.

    The prosecutor said the cables were valued at millions of naira.

    She said the offence was punishable under sections 79, 343 and 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Employee pleads guilty to stealing soft drink

    A 24-year-old casual worker, Michael Okafor, yesterday admitted stealing 30 bottles of 7up from the bottling company.

    He pleaded guilty at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, where he was arraigned on a one-count charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O.I. Raji, remanded Okafor at Kirikiri Prisons custody, and adjourned the case till October 11 for review of facts and sentencing.

    The prosecutor, Yomi Egunjobi, said the accused stole the drink, worth N3,000, on September 17, at Seven-Up Bottling Company premises, Oregun, Lagos.

    “The accused stole his employer’s drink after the day’s job,” he said.

    “The security guard on duty saw him throwing the bottles of drink through the fence to the other side.

    “When he accosted him, the accused wanted to escape, but the guard prevented him.

    “The accused, who confessed to the crime, attributed it to the devil and pleaded for mercy,” he said.

    Egunjobi noted that the offences contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
