  • Two in trouble for ‘scaling fence’, stealing

    Two men, Adeniyi Dada and Isaac Samson, who allegedly scaled the fence of a house at night to steal household items, have been arraigned at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun State.

    The accused were, however, granted bail at N200, 000 each and two sureties.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Fatima Sodamade said the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should show evidence of tax payment to the government.

    The accused — Dada, 20, and Samson, 19 — are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecutor Adekunle Bukola told the court the accused committed the offences on March 8 at 11:25 pm., at Zone VII, Ayekale in Osogbo.

    He alleged the accused conspired and broke into the apartment of the complainant, Adekunle Wasiu, by jumping the fence to steal household items.

    “They were, however, apprehended,” he said, adding that the offences contravened sections 413 and 509 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The lawyer to the accused, Mr. Dada Abosede, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

    The case was adjourned till September 11 for hearing.

  • Court jails mechanic three months for stealing bag

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja at the weekend sentenced a motor mechanic, Murtale Useni, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a bag.

    Useni, 20, who lives at Jayi Tipper Garage, Abuja, was arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing.

    The convict pleaded guilty.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, gave the convict an option to pay N10,000 as fine.

    Sadiq said the punishment was less severe because he pleaded guilty, and saved the court the pain of prolonged prosecution.

    He warned him against taking to crimes again.

    The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told the court that on August 18, Simon Shaapela, of Behind Water Board, Katampe Extension, reported the matter at Gwarinpa Police Station.

    She said on the same date, about 7 am., the convict went into the complainant’s house without his consent.

    Auhioboh said the convict broke into the complainant’s room and stole his bag, containing his ATM card, clothes, electrical cable and other items.

    She said when the convict saw the complainant coming, he jumped through the window and ran. But he was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    The prosecutor said during  interrogation, the convict admitted committing the offence.

    She said the offences contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    Following his plea, the prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015.

  • Man in trouble for ‘stealing’ photocopiers

    A 49-year-old man, Olabisi Adeogun, was yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft and fraud.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing charges of theft and fraud.

    He committed the offences in April 2014 at L88, Irewole Estate, Ado-Ekiti, according to police prosecutor Caleb Leranmo.

    Leranmo alleged Adeogun stole three photocopier machines (Sharp AR200), valued at N240,000, property of Mrs Janet Akintoye.

    He added that the accused sold one of the photocopiers, valued at N100,000, without the consent of the owner.

    The offences, he said, contravened sections 390 (9) and 457 of the Criminal Code Cap 77, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012. The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and bring his witnesses.

    But the accused pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Mrs Florence Nwadishi, urged the court to grant him bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted the accused bail at N100,000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till September 18 for hearing.

  • Businessman gets six months for stealing stove

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja has sentenced a 20-year-old businessman, Abdulreman Yusuf, to six months imprisonment for stealing stove and other cooking utensils.

    The Judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced Yusuf after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge bordering on brake-in and stealing.

    Sadiq ordered the convict to pay N40, 000 as compensation to the complainant.

    He, however, warned the convict to be of good behaviour and desist from committing crimes after serving his punishment.

    Yusuf, living at Angwan Shehu by Zango village at Life Camp in Abuja, was charged under sections 349, 356 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    Cattle rearer, seven others remanded for ‘stealing’ N6.5m

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court has ordered that a cattle rearer, Attahiru Abubakar and seven others, now at large, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly attacking a businessman and stealing his N6.5million.

    Other accused now at large are Jafa’ar Abubakar (a local security man), four students: Mikailu Umar, Ileja Abu, Ibrahim Bururus and Barade Ibrahim; and Mittahu Aliu, whose occupation was not stated, as well as a teenager, whose name is being withheld.

    The accused, who live in the Sokoto metropolis, were charged with criminal conspiracy under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Division) Act, Cap. R. II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2001.

    Police prosecutor Na’allah Jibo told the court that the accused conspired and stole money from the complainant, Alhaji Yahaya Gora, a businessman of Minonata, Sokoto.

    Jibo said the accused armed themselves with cutlasses, knives and sticks and attacked the complainant in his home, where they inflicted injuries on him and dispossessed him of N6.5 million.

    The prosecutor told the court that the complainant reported the incident at Ungwuan Rogo Police Station, Sokoto, after he was attacked.

    He said the offences contravened sections 97 and sub-sections (1) (2) (9) of the Penal Code Law.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, for further investigation, except for the teenager among them, who should be sent to a remand home in the metropolis.

    Adamu adjourned the case till September 7 for hearing.

  • Two held for stealing N16m tomato paste

    Two workers, Obadiah Ogi, 42, and Adeyemi Abaekere, 40, have been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N16 million Vitali tomato paste.

    The accused were arraigned on a four-count charge for conspiracy, stealing and forgery.

    They denied the charges.

     Police prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the accused had committed the offence on May 31, at Ogba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused who were entrusted with N16 million worth of Vitali tomato paste for delivery to a customer in Kano state, had failed to do so.

    It was said the accused had also forged documents, letter head papers and recommendation letters which they had presented to their employers.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 365(3)(i), 366 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja admitted the duo to a bail of N2 million each with two sureties in like sum.

    The case has been adjourned until September 13.

  • Labourer arraigned for ‘stealing’ friend’s motorcycle

    A 26-year-old labourer, Musa Abubakar, who allegedly stole his friend’s motorcycle, valued at N120,000, was yesterday arraigned at a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court sitting in Aso Pada, Nasarawa State.

    Abubakar, who lives on Calvary Road Mararaba, is being tried on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Agabi Auta, told the court the case was reported at Calvary Road Police Station by Abdullahi Mohammed of Tudun Wada, Mararaba, on August 10.

    He said sometime last year, the complainant bought a Bajaj motorcycle and gave it to the defendant (his friend) for commercial purpose.

    Auta said the defendant entered into an agreement to remit N30,000 monthly to the complainant, but after paying two months, he stopped.

    “The defendant then sold the motorcycle to another person and informed the complainant that the motorcycle had been stolen.

    “When the complainant asked of the money the defendant made before the purported theft, he promised to bring it to the complainant, but he never did,” the prosecutor said.

    He said the defendant ran to an unknown destination until August 10 when he was arrested.

    Auta added that during investigation, the defendant confessed to have sold the motorcycle to Isiaka Ahmed, now at large.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Judge, Albert Maga, granted the defendant N150,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

    He said the surety must live within the court’s jurisdiction, submit a passport photograph or a national identity card.

    Maga adjourned the case till August 31 for further hearing.

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja yesterday sentenced a 22-year-old labourer, Labaran Babangida, to two-month imprisonment for attempting to steal.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5,000 fine.

    He advised him to desist from committing crimes, saying the sentence would act as a deterrent to others.

    Babangida, who lives at Jabi Garage, Abuja, was convicted on a count charge.

    The convict, who pleaded guilty, urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu had told the court Windy Eyo of Eda Plaza, Jabi, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on August 8.

    Dalhatu said the complainant reported that on the same date the convict entered the plaza with the intention to steal.

    The prosecutor said the offence is punishable under Section 95 of the Penal Code.

  • Woman gets one year for stealing officer’s N99, 000

    A 35-year-old woman, Micheal Modupe, is to spend the next 12 months in prison for stealing a police officer’s N99,000 in his office, an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State ruled at the weekend.

    Modupe, whose address was not provided, was arraigned for stealing.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the light-fingered woman pleaded guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Adelaja, said the court had no option but to sentence her since she had pleaded guilty.

    The sentence was without an option of fine.

    Police prosecutor Sunday Eigbejiale told the court that the woman committed the offence on April 7 at 4p.m. at Onipanu Police Station, Ota, Ogun State.

    He said the accused stole N99, 000, property of a police officer, Mr. Akinleye Akinwale.

    Eigbejiale said Akinwale, the complainant, is attached to the Divisional Crime Office at the station.

    According to him, the complainant kept the money in his bag in the office and discovered that the money was missing.

    “The woman was the only person with him in the office when the money was stolen.”

  • Delivery man in court for ‘stealing parcels worth N529,000’

    The police in Lagos have arraigned a 35-year-old Delivery man, Charles Akinsipe, before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing parcels worth N529,000 from his employer, Jumia Company.

    Akinsipe, a resident of Ogba, Ikeja, is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Raji Akeem, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 19, on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja.

    He alleged that Akinsipe stole parcels valued at N529,000.

    The prosecutor said when the defendant delivers parcels to customers, he tells them to transfer the money to his own account, instead of paying into the company’s official account.

    Akeem said when the company discovered that the defendant had been stealing from them, they reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The Magistrate, T.O Shomade, granted the defendant bail at N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till August 15 for mention.

  • Man gets two years for stealing employer’s N1.7m

    An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State has sentenced a 42-year-old man, Adeleke Olalekan, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing his employer’s N1.7 million.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr. S.O.Banwo, however, gave the employee an option of N100,000 fine.

    Olalekan, who lives at 28, Temidire Street, Ota, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the employee and his accomplices stole the sum from Purechem Cement, Ota, on July 28 at 4p.m.

    He said the offences contravened sections 90(6) and 465 of the Criminal Code of Ogun, 2006.
