His first official game will be Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana of South Africa in June and will be followed by the second game against Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively. Sodje slams lack of contract terms

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has defended its choice of  former international winger Finidi George as the new  Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

George was on Monday named as the substantive  Head Coach by the NFF following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee.

A member of the influential technical committee and erstwhile Nigeria International, Felix Owolabi, has shed light on why George got the nod, adding that the committee picked the former Ajax winger due to his vast  knowledge of the domestic league.

“What the NFF, government and the people of Nigeria wanted  this time is for an indigenous coach to be given a place of pride in our football and I think it’s not out of place; and a very good direction and constructive idea,” Owolabi, a star member of the Green Eagles that won  the country’s  first AFCON title in 1980, said. “I think this is good for our football since the federation  has decided to do this, because I have always said it  that the destiny of our  football as far as this country is concerned lies in the local league .

“Incidentally, Finidi George is holding fort at one of the best clubs in Nigeria and by virtue of his position in the league, his team is not doing badly and his team (Enyimba) is ranked among the top four. That is to tell you that he’s aware that something must be done to improve the standard of our league.

“The very best way to do this is to have one of us  who knows about the local league; one of us who would be  committed  to ensuring that a great percentage  of our players from the local league  form the bulk of the national team,” added Owolabi in an interview  with Brila fm.

But another ex-international, Sam Sodje, has slammed the NFF for being evasive over George’s contract terms and emoluments as it would have done were the Enyimba coach a foreigner.

“It’s very unprofessional the way they have done it (the announcement) and it makes George look so cheap  because you just don’t announce a national team’s coach without telling us the contract terms and this is why people always look down on local-based  coaches,” the former Charlton Athletic defender quipped.

“They should have named the assistants with him, how much he’s going to be paid and do things properly  because  they would have done that with a foreign coach.

“Why can’t they do the same with  George and that’s the down side?” he noted.
