Super Eagles vs. Team Nigeria: Experts demand viable reward system across sports

The use of rewards as motivation is as old as the history of sports. Theorists and practitioners have felt the extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation were addictive, hence monetary and other rewards have long been used informally to control performance. Yet in view of the recent largesse showered on Nigeria’s national men’s soccer team, the Super Eagles,  stakeholders believe it’s about time for an all-inclusive sustainable reward system  for athletes across sports;  from football to judo and from athletics to wrestling, amongst others, write MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN and TUNDE LIADI

Straight from the Shakespearean legend, there  were so much comets seen for the Super Eagles for nearly winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations  recently concluded in Cote d’Ivoire, after the Federal Government rolled out the drums to celebrate  their silver-winning efforts.

Apart from flat gifts in Abuja, the players as well as their accompanied officials received national honours alongside landed properties in the Federal Capital city. For many, this was rather too much and not in consonance  with what used to be a term of reference, even in the ancient Greece where  shields and wreaths were used as rewards for athletes.

Besides, many further queried the fact that football is being accorded too much within the Nigerian sport eco-system, to the detriment of other athletes across other sporting endeavours, as far as  dolling out rewards and ribbons at the end of major championships or tournaments.

But foremost broadcast journalist, Deji Omotoyinbo,  has  canvassed  for a model reward system that is acceptable and embraced by all the sports, including football, adding that such reward system should be graded based on performance and the magnitude of the competition.

“I don’t have anything against any reward the government wishes to give to athletes, but I believe it should be standardised,” Omotoyinbo told NationSport. “Give the same reward across all sports and not just football, so no set of athletes are made to feel inferior to others. Grade the reward system along the lines of continental, international and global titles if you like, but all athletes must get the same reward based on graded performances.”

Between Team Nigeria and Super Eagles

But former Nigeria international Edema Fuludu, a member of the team that won the AFCON in 1994, affirmed that rewarding athletes that excelled at competitions would serve as impetus for other athletes to give their best, knowing that they would be recognised as such if they are victorious.

He also added that government gets good public relations, perceptions and more popularity when athletes are rewarded as due.

“First, reward encourages athletes to want to be the best and also serves as incentives to those who want to get involved actively in sports, but the reward system is a different kettle of fish,” Fuludu said in an interview. He added that it would be pretentious to compare  football  to other sports in respect of what is given as rewards at the end of a major championship.

He continued: “Those who reward also get mileage from rewarding either political or socio- political. Government will reward to prop up political image, especially if it has a low rating with public opinion.

“Therefore, I think any reward system should endeavour to evaluate properly whether it is commensurate with standard. It is not about how much money is doled out but the level of recognition.

“I understand that football has always been the king of sports, generally speaking. However, second place can never be first place. Second  is failure compared to first and cannot be celebrated as if it is first, period.

“I am of the opinion that other sports should get quality reward if athletes excel in major competitions. The recommended reward should be good financial take away and recognition as in a hall of fame, for example.

“But those who are clamouring for the same reward with footballers should know that their sports do not elicit public enjoyment and outcry like football,” added the former BCC Lions player.

He noted that the  federal government was not properly guided in the reward accorded to the Super Eagles, who came second at the 2023 AFCON, adding that government should therefore  extend the same olive branch to other sports that put the country’s map in the limelight in international competitions.

    Between AFCON and Africa Games

Speaking in the same vein,  President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF),  Daniel Igali, said the federal government  would make a whole lot of difference to the athletes at the ongoing 2023 African Games in Ghana by  offering  them similar recognition as much as  the silver medal-winning Super Eagles at the recently held AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

Igali noted that most athletes from other sports are finding it difficult to make ends meet and should be rewarded after they worked hard under very tough conditions to win laurels for Nigeria.

He stated that his six female wrestlers who won six gold medals across six categories did that without any budgetary provisions from the government and thus should be commended for braving the odds to achieve the unexpected.

“It beats my imagination how we rob the poor to feed the rich. Imagine our footballers from the group stage to the final they got over 10 million dollars. Most of the athletes  at this African Games in Ghana live on mostly N50,000 or N60,000 per month. Even the ones employed by their state government,” Igali told NationSport.

“Yet you give those multi-millionaires  houses in Abuja,  plots of land and national honours for winning a silver medal and now we have our athletes who have won gold medals in Africa.

“President Tinubu  has set a precedent and it must be extended to every other athletes. We cannot have sports on a different radar. You can’t tell me football is more important than any other sports. Our footballers are also here and we see how they are struggling winning and losing matches just like every other athlete.”

He said the golden silver medal won by Blessing Oborodudu in Wrestling for Nigeria at the last Olympic Games three years ago would bring about needed changes with the federal government shifting its focus to the sport, but that the reverse has been the case.

Igali called on government to pay more than the usual attention to wrestling  by giving a grand reception to the wrestlers as well as other Team Nigeria’s medallists  from the Africa Games in Ghana.

“Now we are going to celebrate these our athletes. Six wrestlers have won six gold medals. Is it because we camped for two weeks before going for this tournament? Is that what we are going to attribute this victory to?“ he asked rhetorically.

“We have all our priorities wrong. If the Wrestling Federation does not have a budget. We are going to look at some athletes whom we have groomed over the years and we milk them dry and the moment they are done, they are done.”

Similarly, President of  Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Dr.  Abdul Ibrahim, said the federal government should  handsomely reward athletes who have helped to propagate the image of the country positively in international competitions like they recently did for the Super Eagles.

“It is a welcome development for the government to reward athletes that have excelled for the nation because  these athletes are helping to shape the image of the country and it is just normal that they are given the necessary encouragement,” Dr.  Abdul told NationSport. “My weightlifters have performed beyond expectations and the 15 gold medals and other medals we have won are just testament of the hard work we have put in. We still  believe we are going to win some more.

“I will like the government to appreciate the athletes who have worked so hard to be here. Training with all they have to get to the position they are currently.”

    Kudos to President Tinubu

Nevertheless, US-based Olympian Prof. Sadiq A. Abdullahi was magnanimous in praises for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for raising the  bar by rewarding the  Super Eagles despite the fact that  Nigeria’s national men’s soccer team only came second  last month behind hosts Cote d’Ivoire at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Consistent with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision and mission for the sports and captured in the “Renewed Hope” agenda for the sports sector, the overarching goal is ‘to be the vehicle that brings back life and liveliness into Nigerian Sports so as to bring back the joy of following sports to families and become a source of national cohesion and livelihood for all who partake in sports’.

“Also, considering the economic and security challenges facing the nation and hardship faced by athletes, coaches and sports administrators, awarding athletes (and coaches) who won medals, will not only inspire them, it will renew hope and renew the spirit of nationalism and patriotism. The 2022-2026 National Sports Industry Policy (NSIP) proposed incentive package for the private sector, but yet to be implemented, to attract private sector investments. Rewarding athletes and coaches will also motivate them to be the conduits or change agents in the renewed hope process.”

Abdullahi, who doubles as President/CEO Sadiq Abdullahi Sports Enterprises, noted that  the issue of rewarding athletes in Nigeria was nothing new but he canvassed for a sustainable rewards system for Nigerian athletes.

He further said: “A reward system is an incentive package aimed at motivating an athlete to perform before, during and after a competition. Both public and private organisations provide incentives. Historically, Nigerian athletes have been rewarded for winning medals at continental and international competitions, especially at the All Africa, Commonwealth and Olympics Games.

“Most incentives are monetary. Others are non-monetary, such as the National Award. Monetary and National Award are given to athletes who have met certain criteria, high standards and have shown good character on and off the field. Monetary award is the most appropriate for those who achieve podium success.

“Athletes compete in and practice sport for a variety of reasons. These reasons fall into the two major categories of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Athletes who are intrinsically motivated participate in sports for internal reasons, such as enjoyment; whereas athletes who are extrinsically motivated participate in sports for external reasons, such as material rewards. Other forms of incentives include scholarship, training and sports development grant, athletes’ insurance waiver, coaching grants, promotion or elevation at the workplace, and equipment and travel support to tournaments.”

Between half full and half empty

Yet  the peculiar problem over the years  is that  there is no standard ‘scale of measurement’ as regards who gets what and for  achieving what, as it’s been done in many climes.

While some countries have  modelled reward systems  for athletes across sports, many in Africa particularly, have long left it to the whims and caprices of their administrators.

For instance, in neighbouring Republic of Benin, athletes usually get just a certificate of recognition and sundry gifts according to one of the  country’s foremost media managers, Elvis Dedjinou Zanclan.

“We don’t have a particular template for rewarding athletes, rather government issues letter of congratulations plus money and other gifts which they do according to their will,” the veteran Beninese journalist told NationSport. “Of course, footballers get more than other athletes.”

But in other places like Zambia, they have indeed achieved a standardised system of compensating athletes with similar package, irrespective of whether it is judo or football.

According to Elizabeth Chatuvela of Zambia Daily Mail, athletes from this southern African country get their just desserts equally.

“Yes, Zambia do rewards athletes from other disciplines aside football,” she told NationSports.

“The gold medalists (from the Olympics or African Games) are given US$5,000, with silver medalists getting US$4,000 and bronze medalists US$3,000 and  footballers get US$5,000 (if they win the AFCON),” she added.

But Abdullahi believes the panache, as far as Nigeria is  concerned, would be to follow to the letter the guidelines  already set by the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, where a template for awarding monetary and national wards to athletes, who won medals at continental and international competitions such as the All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics Games, has already been created.

    Sports Performance Reward Fund Needed

He elucidated in clear words:  “State governments have awarded monetary awards in millions of naira to athletes who won medals at National Sports Festivals to youths who won medals at National Youth Sports Festivals in the form of scholarships and employments. The federal government through the Federal Ministry of Sports Development has created a template for awarding monetary and national wards to athletes who won medals at continental and international competitions such as the All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics Games.

“The Sports Performance Reward Fund (SPRF), a private sector initiative, provides how the organisation intends to reward athletes who win continental and international medals. For example, for the All Africa Games, 3 million naira for gold; 2 million naira for silver; and 1 million naira for bronze are suggested. For the Commonwealth Games, 5 million naira for gold; 3 million naira for silver and 2 million naira for bronze. For the Olympics Games, 10 million naira for gold; 7.5 million naira for silver and 5 million for bronze.

With benefits of hindsight, Abdullahi, who worked in tandem  with the last two sports ministers, Solomon Dalung and Sunday Dare, equally  shared  the kernel of the articulated  reward systems for Team Nigeria athletes, even as he refrained from condemning  the largesse splashed on the Super Eagles, which was beyond the imagination of stakeholders despite not winning the big AFCON prize in Cote d’Ivoire.

“The Solomon Dalung ‘s (2015-2019) Sports Reform Committee recommended that “the performance reward should be strictly for each medal not medalists and offer the following breakdown: All Africa Games: 3 million naira for gold; 2 million naira for silver; and 1 million for silver. There are over 350 athletes and almost 100 coaches. It is expected that 25% or more will make the podium. As a result, the monetary rewards are budgeted,” he said.] “For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the template used by Sunday Dare (2019-2023) showed that $5,000 for gold; $3 for silver; and $2,000 for bronze,” he further remarked.

“The federal government decided before the finals of AFCON to reward the players, many of whom are professionals based outside the country. I cannot delve into the reasons why this decision was made.

“I believe that monetary award should have been sufficient. National awards should be reserved for athletes and coaches who have exemplified character, promotion and growing the sport, service to the nation, and inspiring the youth.

“Winning a silver medal should not be a benchmark,” he offered.

Over 600 apply to coach Super Eagles, Golden Eaglets

No fewer than 600 have applied for the recently widely-advertised Super Eagles and Golden Eaglets coaching positions recently by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Almost a fortnight ago, the NFF declared the Super Eagles head coach position vacant after Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro officially left the post at the end of last month after guiding the Nigeria’s national men’s team to a second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Asides the vacant Super Eagles’ managerial position,  the NFF equally declared  vacant the coaching position of the national Under-17 team (Golden Eaglets), last held by former Nigeria International defender, Nduka Ugbade.

Application for the respective publicised positions closed  on Tuesday with words rife that some high profile former Nigeria internationals that include Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, as well as Finidi George who  assisted Peseiro, beat the deadline to submit their applications to replace Peseiro.

But a decent source who pleaded anonymity has  exclusively told NationSport  that the NFF has received  hundreds of applications  for both jobs, adding that the  federation’s technical  committee would soon begin proper screening of the  applications.

“Of course, there are  so many interested coaches   ready to handle both the Super Eagles and Golden Eaglets but I understand over 600 persons actually applied for both jobs,” the source told NationSport in confidence.

Often regarded as one of the most sought-after coaching jobs around the world, consequently the apparent  deluge of interests for the Super Eagles managerial position. But many stakeholders are rooting for an indigenous coach to  succeed Peseiro.

Super Eagles: NFF  warns Bet9ja, Aiteo on ambush marketing

The Nigeria  Football Federation (NFF)  has called out Sports betting company, Bet9ja, Aiteo, an integrated energy company in Nigeria as well as others  to desist  from  ambushing the rights legally  granted to its sponsors and partners .

Speaking  through its marketing partner, Pamodzi Sports Marketing Company , the NFF warned the aforementioned  companies risk  legal action should they fail to stop using  any promotional, advertising, marketing , commercial exploitation and opportunities in relation to the football federation and the national football teams including the image  rights  of  national team players.

Pamodzi  in a statement yesterday  noted  both Bet9ja and  Aiteo and a few others , have  been  from reaping  where they did not sow by associating  their products and services with the Super Eagles, one of the properties of the NFF that had  been granted  exclusively  only to  its accredited  sponsors and partners.

“The Super Eagles’ impressive outing and the inherent potentials showed at the 34th  Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire of returning and even surpassing their best ever performance in the immediate future and leading to the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup have endeared them to Nigerians and corporate  citizens have been identifying with the team,”  the Chief Executive Officer of Pamodzi Sports Marketing Company, Mike Itemuagbor, stated.

He  noted that  Bet9ja’s activities around Super Eagles’ participation at the AFCON 2023 aimed at raising their brand awareness without the sponsorship  rights are unethical and unlawful.

“What Bet9ja has done  was  infringing on Premier Lotto’s trademarks and other property rights in relation to the Super Eagles around AFCON 2023,” he continued.  “This is unlawful and Pamodzi, as the agency responsible for the implementation of the rights between Premier Lotto and the NFF, will not watch the abuse of the rights Premier Lotto has paid for as the official bet sponsor of the National Teams since 2021,”

He  explained further  that  the rights granted to Premier Lotto by the NFF are exclusive in that the NFF have not granted and will not grant to any party, similar rights with respect to itself and the national team, in relation to the Company’s products, services or related products and services.

“The promotional, advertising and marketing and other commercial exploitation rights and opportunities granted Premier Lotto in relation to the national teams  cover such products as Lotto Games, Sports Betting and Virtual Games,” he said.

Similarly, he  warned Aiteo against future ambushing of any of NFF’s properties like they did at AFCON 2023 where the company branded the Nigerian Supporters Club attire at the tournament.

“We appreciate Aiteo’s contributions to the success story of the NFF and Nigerian football with its sponsorship activities in the immediate past but should consider renewing its sponsorship relationship with the NFF to continue to leverage on NFF properties including the Super Eagles,” Itemuagbor  said.“The NFF has not closed the door to those wishing to associate their brands with the national teams of Nigeria.

“The Super Eagles have renewed our hopes in them with the way they rose up to the challenge at AFCON 2023 in the true ‘can do’ Nigerian spirit, corporate  organizations and individuals who wish to associate their brands with our national teams are welcome to discus with us and the NFF and their rights will be  protected,’ Itemuagbor asserted.

  • Football fans call for strengthening of Super Eagles

Football fans call for strengthening of Super Eagles

Some football fans in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have called for the strengthening of the Super Eagles team  ahead of future competitions.

The fans, who recalled the Eagles performance at the AFCON finals against Cote d`Ivoire, stated this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles lost 1-2 to their Ivorian counterparts in spite of scoring the first goal of the match.

Ovie Anthony, who blamed the coach, Jose Peseiro for Eagles loss in the finals, said that the players never played like a team.

He blamed Peseiro for the selection of the players for both the quarter and finals of the tournament.

“Our players never played like a coordinated team. They seemed not to understand each other in that match and it resulted in their defeat by the Ivorians.

“We are not supposed to lose that match if we had a well-coordinated team that understood each other’s style of play.

“The Ivorians cashed in on our poor coordination to equalize and also score their winning goal,” he said.

He called on the technical crew of the Eagles to intensify efforts to strengthen the team, especially the midfield that is the engine room of a football team.

Benedict Benjamin, a medical doctor and a football enthusiast, said that the Eagles showed some level of capacity which was why they got to the finals.

He, however, said that the management of the team should improve on the lessons learnt from their loss at the AFCON finals.

Benjamin said that the inability of the Eagles to maintain their lead in the finals, calls for stretching of all departments of the team for better results.

He said that the technical crew must begin preparations for the 2026 world cup qualifiers, and the 2024 AFCON scheduled for Morocco immediately to avoid failure.

“There is an adage that when you fail to plan you have planned to fail. So now is the right time to begin by strengthening all the departments to ensure a better outing,“he said.

Kingsley Obasohan, who said that there was no need to cry over spilled milk, said that going forward, the handlers of the team must come up with new ideas to get better results.

He said that it is the duty of the technical crew to initiate strategies and tactics, while it is the duty of the players to execute in the field of play.

“I think the onus lies on the coach and his crew to come up with different winning tactics and strategies for different matches,“he said.

  • AFCON 2023 POSTMORTEM: Experts demand rejig of Super Eagles despite silver-winning effort

AFCON 2023 POSTMORTEM: Experts demand rejig of Super Eagles despite silver-winning effort

Nigeria came second  at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire to the delight of many  who celebrated the nation’s return to the final of the competition since 2013 but  some discerning stakeholders are not so impressed. Indeed the Super Eagles went close to winning the tournament again for the first time in 11 years but were undone in the  Final Match by hosts, Cote d’Ivoire who bounced from behind to secure a 2-1 win for their third continental title. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers continuing in June with doubleheader fixtures against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Uyo and Johannesburg respectively, experts  are calling for an instant rejig of  the Super Eagles, writes  TUNDE LIADI.

Fresh from the outcome of the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON), Cote d’Ivoire 2023, stakeholders remain divided over the performance of the Super eagles in spite of their silver-winning efforts.

In fact, majority are peeved that the coach Jose Peseiro-led side offered minimal efforts in the final as they slumped 2-1 to the hosts, Cote d’Ivore with clarion calls on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to do the needful by overhauling the team.

Though he applauded Peseiro, former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, said a new strategy must be embraced going forward as the Super Eagles bid for a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

At the AFCON 2023, Peseiro adopted a defensive approach which made the Super Eagles impregnable as the team secured four clean sheets from the seven matches played in Cote d’Ivoire.

Sodje, a defender during his playing , implored that Peseiro or whoever would be in charge of the team post AFCON 2023, must design another template that will help the Eagles return to winning ways especially in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles have only secured two draws from their opening two games in third spot behind Rwanda (four points) and South Africa (three points) and Sodje noted that the technical crew must discover quality midfielders who can make the work of the attackers easier.

“Before the AFCON the team was not playing very well. We were very poor and bad but he (Peseiro) found the rhythm at the Nations Cup,” Sodje disclosed. “I appreciate the way he played and the system he adopted to set his team at the AFCON. It is up to him to get his players to be able to create the chances and get the goals.

“If he carries on the way we were before the AFCON, there is no way he would be staying but we cannot play the same way we played at the Nations Cup in the World Cup qualifiers.”

Speaking in the same vein, former Nigeria international goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, has charged the Super Eagles not to allow the outcome of the AFCON final with Cote d’Ivoire to dampen their spirits ahead of upcoming engagements.

Idah who pointed out that the performance of the team heading into 2023 AFCON was not inspiring, praised the technical crew for the pleasant surprise that saw them winning the Silver medal at the 34th edition of the continental fiesta.

He, however, called on the NFF to consider changing a few things to ensure freshness within the rank and file of the Super Eagles.

“He(Peseiro) brought a little bit of confidence back to the team,” Idah said in an interview. “If we remember, we were struggling in the World Cup qualifiers. This should raise our morale especially knowing that we played against South Africa and we didn’t lose to them.

“Going forward, we should tinker with the team. There are players we must rest now knowing that we still have till June.”

Idah urged the Eagles technical crew to beam their searchlight to the Nigeria Premier Football League(NPFL) to fish out talents that can make immediate impact in the national team.

“The Nigeria Premier Football League is on. Let’s come home and see how we can include four to five players to the team,” Idah continued. “We have players that can work in and do well. We have players that we can bring in immediately. We need to start making changes in the team.”

For former Auxerre and Inter Milan defender, Taribo West, the Eagles’ defensive approach to the final game against Cote d’Ivoire was behind the team’s loss in the Final Match.

“The Eagles defensive approach in the team final game cost them the title,” West, who also played for AC Milan and Derby County began in an interview. “The match was lost in the dressing room before the game started. The bench should have worked better. I hold the bench responsible for the loss.

“ For instance, Nigeria lost 5-1 to Algeria in the opening match of the 1990 AFCON in Algeria. The Eagles were still able to qualify for the final despite that huge, setback and met the Algerian team again. The Eagles made the final very difficult for the host even though they eventually won 1-0.

“Also in 1996, we lost 1-0 to Brazil in the group stage at the Olympic games in Atlanta, and met the Brazilian again in the semi-final of the same competition.

“But they met a different Nigerian team and we won the game. With that experience, the coaches should have known what to do. They should have deployed another tactics to ensure they win again.”

Similarly, Abiodun Obafemi , a member of the 1996 Olympic Games gold medal-winning squad, has tasked the technical crew to come up with options on how to effectively use the team’s strikers.

He said while the goalkeeping and the defence were impressive at the AFCON, the midfield and the attack fell short of expectations because there was a disconnection between the midfield and attack which deprived the strikers of proper service.

He also faulted the tactical approach of Peseiro which left the Eagles without back up plans and predictable at the AFCON.

“I want to say congratulations to the Super Eagles for making us proud at the AFCON,” Obafemi said. “But going forward, there were some flaws that must be corrected. “Technically speaking, we were too predictable and there was no plan B. In the first 30 minutes of the final game, we were put under intense pressure and there was no plan B.

“If you look at the composition of the team too, we can beat our chest to say we have world class goalkeeper and a well organised defence but we are still struggling in the middle. We need a lot of creative heads that will feed the world class attackers the quality service they need to score goals.”

Meanwhile, former Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, has canvassed the keeping of the major components of the Super Eagles players from the AFCON 2023 but called for the addition of players that can give the team the needed push lacking in Cote d’Ivoire.

“The boys did very well. It is a pity that they came just short at the final moments. Obviously they just needed that strong push to cross the line,” Abdullahi, who was the Sports Minister when Nigeria won the AFCON in 2013 in South Africa, stated. “It has been a while we got to the final of the AFCON. I believe if we are able to keep the core of the team together, I am very confident they can do better next time.

“They have learned valuable experience from this. They are all mostly young and they still have their career ahead of them.”

On the part of former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze, the senior national team needs creative midfielders and he called on NPFL players to seize the chance.

He also charged the NFF not to disband the team but help keep the core of Eagles while adding players who can add value to the team with the World Cup qualifiers around the corner.

“We have strikers but they are starved of supply or ball distributor. Can I really blame anybody for our lack of creative spark in the midfield? Which creative midfielder do we have?” Udeze asked rhetorically.

“People are clamouring for us to look at the NPFL for creative midfielders but I am not aware of that because I am yet to see one. Our domestic league players too should seize the opportunity and step up their game so that they earn a call up to the Super Eagles.

“They played as a team. They did their best and even got to the final. The best thing is to keep the core of the team together with the World Cup qualifiers around the corner. We will just need the injection of a few players like injured Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Boniface when they are okay. Taiwo Awoniyi is another player that should be recalled.”

Meanwhile, Chairman, Brila Media Group, Dr Larry Izamoje, asserted that issues that bedevilled the Eagles in Cote’d’Ivoire must be sorted, adding the Super Eagles need a better coach that can have three or four tactical strategies to joggle with when the going gets tough during games.

He said the AFCON was a good competition for the Eagles but that other pertinent issues that prevented us from lifting the fourth AFCON title must be considered.

“More work still has to be done. We need a coach who must go to the battle with different strategies and not just one,” Izamoje stated.”We need to convince more Nigerian players to change nationality and play for Nigeria. At a stage our best person in the just concluded tournament was somebody who changed nationality, Ademola Lookman.

“If we can convince Ademola Lookman we should do the same thing to Eberechi Eze, Jamal Musiala who are partly Nigeria. Karim Adeyemi has been frequenting Nigeria recently even though he has played for the German national team.

“We shouldn’t rely on Osimhen alone like we did at the AFCON

“But if this coach refuses to give us three or four patterns let him go. I want to see flexibility, creativity in tactical approach. They should return back to Nigeria or back to their clubs with their heads held high.

“They did well but the team was too predictable. We can’t blame it on the boys it is the fault of the coach. Our transition from defence to attack was very slow and for some members of the team after this tournament they can also say let’s create one or two more spaces for Nigeria to start picking younger players.”

Yet the Federal Capital Territory Football Association(FCTFA) Chairman, Mouktar Mohammed , has urged the NFF to go in the hunt for an attack-minded coach in the light of the ultra-defensive approach by Peseiro at the AFCON 2023.

Mohammed enjoined the NFF to handle the Super Eagles’ payments and prize money with utmost professionalism to preserve the harmony in the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers which continue again in June with the double header against South Africa.

“Yesterday (Sunday) was an anti-climax,” the forward-looking football administrator said about the ill-fated AFCON 2023 Final loss to Cote d’Ivoire last Sunday . “We must quickly put our house In order as June key qualifiers is round the corner

“We must now see how NFF handles players’ payments and prize money which will ensure harmony and motivation.

“I believe long-term we need a more attack minded coach who can bring the best of our style.”

Interestingly, former Green Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami who rooted for the Super Eagles throughout the tournament, has also questioned the technical input of Peseiro, adding the Super Eagles’ lack of depth and predictable tactics was there for all to see at the AFCON 2023.

“Now is not a time for any forensics or audit of Nigeria’s performance in the final match. It is, technically, almost a replica of the semi-final match during which the drama and suspense of the match truncated the lives of four Nigerians, the ultimate price to pay for love of one’s national team,” Odegbami expressed. “Finally, I congratulate the Super Eagles for taking us to the final, and the effort they put up, for three weeks lifting the spirit of Nigerians and relieving them of some of the mental and physical pain the whole country is going through in these tough times in our history.

“The Ivorians showed clearly that they wanted to win the trophy more. And so they did!

“I watched on Social-Media yesterday, as Jose Mourinho told the world that he ‘sold’ Nigeria a dummy – Jose Peseiro- his closest friend in football.

“Is associated friendship the credential for coaching the Super Eagles?

“On behalf of Nigerians, we thank Jose Mourinho. We also thank his friend for the services he rendered the Super Eagles and fulfilling his limited target.”

He added: “Meanwhile, our sights are set on bigger targets now, and we would require a new coach with confirmed technical competence and qualifications (not friendship) and higher ambitions. Peseiro himself knows that his relationship with Nigeria should come to an end here.”

Whether the power-that-be would accede to the clarion calls of Nigerians as per Peseiro yet remains to be seen.

  • Super Eagles’ day at the Villa

Super Eagles’ day at the Villa

    By Oche Echeija Egwa

Nigeria’s high-flying, football team, Super Eagles, returned to a hearty welcome, and their visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, February 13, turned into an icing on the cake of a successful outing in the tournament. Apart from the cheers, hugs, handshakes and selfies that heralded their entry into the hallowed Council Chambers, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, quintessentially, had a surprise for them.

On behalf of a grateful nation, President Tinubu announced gifts of a flat for members of the team, a piece of land in Abuja, and also conferred national honours, Member Order of the Niger, on them. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in his characteristic, hands-on style of leadership, distributed land forms immediately to start the process of allocations.

The president’s warmth for the team members, who dazzled at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro, the Ivorian economic and political capitals respectively, was a humbling and revealing moment for many. The Nigerian leader shone brightly at the reception by calling players by their first names, and sharing his insight on the matches, particularly on the final with the host team, Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire.

President Tinubu described the vice-captain of the team, William Troost-Ekong as a “warrior” who provided strong leadership for the team, and the rampaging striker, who consistently tormented the opponents’ goalkeepers, Victor Osimhen, he called a “Trojan horse”. Although the Nigerian team lost at the finals2 – 1, to the Ivorians on Sunday, February 11, after scoring first, the magnitude of commendations and celebrations reflected appreciation for the zeal, diligence, and dexterity that the Super Eagles showcased in Abidjan.

Super Eagles defender Troost-Ekong was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2023 AFCON.

The Villa was upbeat and ready like the nation to receive the team. A combination of public officials and ordinary Nigerians watched the final play at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa Sunday, at the invitation of President Tinubu. After the match, an elated president said the Super Eagles represented the nation with panache and dignity.

“Let this passing event not dispirit us, but bring us together to work harder. We are a great nation bound as one by the green-white-green banner of resilience, joy, hope, duty, and untiring love.

“To those cherished Nigerian youths expressing their gifts in communities, drawing lines in the sand as they play football in their humble rectangles of play, you can be our heroes tomorrow; do not relent in your pursuit. My administration is here to make dreams come true,” the President said.

In an unusual show of support for the Super Eagles, President Tinubu had sent the Vice President Kashim Shettima to Cote d’Ivoire for the semi-final and final matches in less than five days, explaining that his role as ECOWAS chairman of Heads of State and Governments, restrains an open campaign against a member state. The vice president, Secretary to the Government George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Sports Minister John Enoh, Jamila, and Bio Ibrahim, were part of the reception at the Villa.

President Tinubu told the Super Eagles that he was moved by their “team spirit’’. He said their collectiveness should serve as an example to the political class that the country can thrive and succeed, with less rancour, tension, and division, by redirecting energy into building the nation.

“You were determined. We salute your resilience. You lifted our spirits, and you made us proud. You made us smile as Nigerians.

“It is not easy to absorb a loss, particularly when the expectations are high. But you have demonstrated sportsmanship, resilience, and teamwork throughout the entire tournament. That is what AFCON stands for, the unity and resilience of the continent. You have done a great job, and I am very proud of you,’’ President Tinubu noted.

To further accentuate his “open door policy” in the growing sectors of the country, the president assured the Super Eagles that they would be consulted on issues related to sports development while sharing his vision for a more structured, functional, and purposeful local football league.

“As your President, I will go out to attract greater private sector investment in the Nigerian Professional Football League. We have to grow our local league, and I promise to be a super promoter of sports in our country.

“Many of you may in the future become managers of our local premiership system. I want to say once again that I am proud of you, and Nigeria is proud of you. You are a lifter of spirits,” he said.

Doing an X-ray of Nigeria’s participation at AFCON, 2023, the Minister of Sports, attributed the success of the team to the support received from the president, from the preparation stage of the tournament to the finals, highlighting some areas of conflict that were carefully taken care of.

“For the first time, we have gone through a major competition; we have come back without any crisis, without any complaint, without any issues whatsoever relating to allowances, bonuses, or whatever. This kept the team focused on the matches in front of them with quality results,” the minister said.

The Minister of Youth was full of appreciation for the support received by the team, and the president’s focus on empowering youths in the country.

Ibrahim said the fatherliness shown by President Tinubu serves as a pillar for the youths to show more loyalty and commitment to the growth of the nation, pledging more dedication in ensuring the creation and integration of programmes, particularly in sports.

Alex Iwobi’s presence at the Council Chamber elicited more celebration as public officials and staff specially approached him for pictures while denouncing the cyber-bullying after the final match.

Troost-Ekong had some good words for the president and a promise for the future: “We are very grateful for your support during our time in Ivory Coast. We did our best until the final. I wish that we were here carrying the trophy for you.

“In 2019, I was here with a bronze medal. Now we are here with a silver medal. I have two gold-medal winners beside me here and all we can promise is that we will continue to work hard, and the next time we meet, hopefully, next year, we will be bringing home a gold medal,’’ the vice-captain said.

Speaking with newsmen, after individual and family photos, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, said, “This is a great day for all of us; you can see how the president received the team, and we are highly elated to say that we have been honoured with MON, to all our entire team, including myself and my general secretary.’’

The coach, Jose Peseiro, revealed it was the first time he had met a country’s president in the course of his managerial career.

“I would like to say thank you to the president. I am 60 years old, and this is the first time a president has invited me to his house,” the Portuguese coach said.

Peseiro, however, said it would have been better if his team had lifted the trophy. “Of course, I would have liked to bring the cup to the Nigerian people. I’m sad about that. But of course, I’m happy because I think we did a fantastic job. In the final, I think we felt that atmosphere.”

Team members, like goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, and Osimhen said they were already looking forward to the qualifiers for the World Cup, and AFCON 2024 in Morocco, assuring the nation of a better outing.

AFCON: Soldier faults national honour, gifts for Super Eagles

Adie Paul, a Nigerian soldier, has condemned the national honour, lands and flats given the Super Eagles team members who played the just concluded African Cup of Nation (AFCON).

The team came second in the tournament after it was defeated by the Elephants of Ivory Coast in the finals on Sunday, February 11.

Paul, however, questioned the rationale for honouring the Super Eagles while soldiers fighting insurgents were not honoured by the federal government.

The soldier expressed his anger on his X account, claiming to have been shot during while serving in the northeast.

Reacting to the post, the soldier, who shared a picture, wrote: “Yet, as a soldier, I stayed in the northeast fighting Boko Haram for four years plus, I was shot and I am still carrying the bullet in me till date, not even a medal from the Army/Nigeria government.”
