  • World Cup: Eagles train for set-pieces on volleyball court

Super Eagles players on Wednesday put their heading skills to test as they trained on set pieces ahead of Iceland crucial clash on Friday.

The Eagles players conducted the training in a chalk drawn volley ball court with three players in each side of the court for their next match at the 45,000 spectators Volgograd Arena.

They volleyed the ball with their legs and exchanged passes with their heads across an erected pole at the middle of the court on Wednesday morning in training that lasted for hours.

While William Troost-Ekong (Bursaspor), Tyronne Ebuehi (Ado Den Haag), Elderson Echiejile (Cercle Brugge KSV), were on the left side of the court watching from a video post Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor), Alex Iwobi (Arsenal), and Leon Balogun (Brighton) were on the right side.

Head coach Gernot Rohr and his assistants were on ground making corrective input as they supervised the session.

The three-time African champions like other African sides in the ongoing FIFA World Cup have not been able to maximize their set-piece advantage and have also falling prey to poor defensive lapses from corner kicks.

  • Eagles over cloud, ready to soar – NFF

Seyi Akinwunmi, the first Vice-President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Tuesday said the Super Eagles had put behind them the disappointment of defeat by Croatia to face the next matches.

He said that the Eagles were now ready to go for the maximum points in their remaining encounters in Group D at the FIFA World Cup.

Akinwunmi’s words of assurance were contained in a statement by the Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, on Tuesday in Lagos.

He quoted the Chairman of NFF organising committee saying the football house is expecting a match winning performance against Iceland on Friday.

“Akinwunmi told a gathering of the cream of Nigeria’s media representatives in Saint Petersburg that the NFF expected a match-winning performance from the three-time African champions against Iceland on Friday.

“Like all Nigerians back home, and like the team itself, the NFF was not happy with the loss to Croatia. But the Eagles have climbed that cloud now and ready to conquer.

“They have put behind them the defeat and looking ahead with determination to the remaining two games.

“I can confirm to you that the team is not lacking motivation in any way. Our agreement with them was that they would get their entire money for the group phase once they qualify.”

He added that “it is not a match-by-match basis. So, they are aware that if they win the remaining matches or just achieve the minimum to qualify from the group.

“’Regardless of this, they will still earn the money for all three matches.”

Akinwunmi praised Sports and Youth Development Minister, Solomon Dalung, for rallying Nigerians behind the team and staying behind in Russia to support the team in the remaining matches.

“We cannot fully express our appreciation to the Sports Minister, who has called on Nigerians to keep supporting the team and personally expressed belief in the team’s ability to reach the knockout rounds.

“We still have him with us here in Russia and he will lead the delegation to the match against Iceland in Volgograd.

“The Sports Minister led a Federal Government delegation to Russia and led the delegation to Kaliningrad for the first match, alongside the Nigeria Ambassador, Prof. Steve Davies Ugbah.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to speak to the team before the match, adding that government support is total for the team.

According to him, motivation is huge, so they have no reason not to go all out on Friday.

“Dalung also greatly inspired the Eagles during the qualifying race, personally leading the delegation to the matches in Zambia and Cameroon.

“He was also on ground in Uyo for all the home matches against Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.

“It is now left for the team to go all out and give Nigerians joy by winning their remaining games.

“He also disclosed that the Eagles will depart their Essentuki team camp in the Stavropol region of Russia to Volgograd on Thursday, ahead of Friday evening’s clash,’’ the statement read in part. (NAN)

  • Volgograd clash: Mikel adopts Ronaldo’s approach

Super Eagles Captain John Obi Mikel may have adopted Cristiano Ronaldo’s approach ahead of Nigeria’s second group game against Iceland at the Volgograd on Friday.

The Tiajin Teda of China captain who is eager to turn the table after the Eagles   lost 2-0 to Croatia in the opening match at the Kaliningrad Stadium, was seen training 10 minutes ahead of official training time on Monday, apparently aimed at improved performance.

Mikel who reportedly received a call from Nigeria’s President  Muhammadu Buhari, a few hours to the Croatian tie that ended in defeat received some bashing from the ever critical Nigerian fans and analysts alike for posting a below par  performance against Croatia.

But in a video posted Monday on Youtube the Nigerian captain was seen burning the calories even before his other teammates arrived the training groundin Essentuki.

Mikel’s show of added commitment is comparable to that of  Portugal international and Real Madrid forward Cristriano Ronaldo known to have the habit of  to stay behind after training for further personal training both in the club and national levels.

His extra training some say may be responsible for his sometimes out-of-this-world performance on a good day.  The five time Balloon d Or winner produced a spectacular performance in Portugal’s opener against Spain in Russia scoring a hatrick in the 3-3 thriller, garnishing his feat with breath-taking free-kicks that stunned spectators.

Meanwhile the Presidential call put to Super Eagles captain just before the tie against Croatia has generated mixed reactions.  While some fans believe it was to serve as a ginger for the team others said it put undue pressure on the boys

“I thought they said we have psychologist in the team what is their job?  How come they couldn’t underscore that such a call could mount pressure on the team? “Queried a group of fans who expressed their views in a chat with Sportinglife.ng on Eagles performance in Russia so far, recalling that the team visited the President who prayed and wished them well at the Villa before they left for Russia

After losing the first match Nigeria will need to pull a win against Iceland to stand a chance of progressing to to the next stage.  The thinking is that with at least three points in the kitty before the last group match against Argentina the Eagles can scale through.

  • Dimeji Lawal: Accept Eagles results in good fate

Former international Oladimeji  Lawal , has declared that it won’t be a tea party for the Super Eagles when they face Iceland on Friday, even as he advised Nigerians to accept whatever the team is able to achieve in Russia in good fate.

He noted that the World Cup is not an experimental platform and that no nation gets more than it has invested in the Mundial.

Preparation for the world cup according to him is a cumulative effort over the years devoid of ad hoc approach.

Dimeji who was baring his mind ahead of Friday’s make or break encounter further said  that the nation’s expectations are often higher than level of input.

“The world cup is not a platform for experiment.  We put in so little and expect so much” he said

On the 2-0 loss to Croatia in the opener, the former K.V. Kortrijk of Belgium midfielder noted that the strikers lacked cohesion and made no attempts on goal.  He did not however leave the blame on the laps of the players alone but frowned at the idea of drafting the players to play roles different from their traditional roles in their clubs.

“Players are invited to the national team based on their performance and the role they play in their clubs, “You cannot change that overnight and expect instant positive result,” he submitted

The former Shooting stars ace nicknamed ‘Kabongo’ in his days in the national team, noted that lack of developmental plans in a country of over 180million people is a major drawback which affects the discovery and nurture of play makers.  He cautioned against heaping so much blame on the players insisting that they are doing the best under prevailing circumstance.

“The team’s performance is just a reflection of the state of affairs in the country and you don’t expect magic from a system with so many shortcomings,” he added.

Iceland a country with a population of about 330,000 people are making appearance at the world cup for the first time, and ranked 22nd on the FIFA log.

Iceland national team nicknamed Strákarnir okkar (Our Boys) began their campaign in Russia on a bright note holding Argentina to a 1-1 draw and will be hoping to consolidate when they face Eagles on Friday.

  • Open letter to Super Eagles

Sir: Before you get carried away you have to decide the real reasons why you are in Russia. You each need to ask yourselves the following questions – Why am I here in Russia? What am I here to achieve? What are my goals for this World Cup? Who can help me achieve these goals? And how can I achieve these goals? Where can I go from here after I have achieved these goals?

Let me make it easy for you by answering some of the questions. You see you may not realize it but you were all born for a time such as this in the history of our nation Nigeria. We are living in a critical stage of our nation’s existence. And it is crucial you understand your role in the scheme of things.

Let me make it clear to you what you are not there to do. You are not there to be distracted by the fine “Russian babes”- so don’t get detracted. You are not there to see the beautiful tourist attractions in Russia – so don’t become a tourist. You are not there on vacation. You are not there to just play football, no no no! Let’s get that straight! This is not a training session, this the real deal! You are not there to just participate and make up the numbers of teams to play at the World Cup. You are not just numbers. You are not just there to win extra money for yourselves. You are not in a casino.  You are not there to just make a name for yourselves and get a better deal from your clubs at the end of the World Cup – this is not the time to be transacting any business!  You are not there for that kind of business. Nonetheless, you are there for business but a different kind of business.

You are there to play to win every match you play in. You are there to WIN the WORLD CUP, period!

You are there for one purpose to play for Nigeria and to win the World Cup. You must understand that the nation that the colours of your jersey represents is more important than the name and number on the back of your jersey. You are there to represent Nigeria, play for Nigeria and win for Nigeria!

Each one of you must go into the inner recesses of your mind, soul and being and determine in your heart that you are the man that your team can count on. That you are the man that will do whatever-it-takes to ensure that victory is yours. That you are the warrior that must have the victory and nothing and absolutely nothing will get in your way of winning and carrying that cup! You must encourage your team-mates to also become a whatever-it-takes player. You must play as a team and you must have a great team spirit.

How can you achieve this gigantic goal of winning the World Cup? This question is just like the question “How do you eat an elephant?” The only way to eat an elephant is a little bit at a time. Likewise, the way for you to win this year’s 2018 FIFA World Cup is to focus on each match before you and focus on winning it. Go into the game to win the match. Go into each game with a winning mind-set. Go into each game with a winning attitude.

First of all focus all you energy on winning the first half of the match. Then after half time focus all your energy on winning the second half of the match. You must always play to win. You must win every first half of each match you play in, EVERY FIRST HALF of each MATCH! You must also win every second half of every match you play in, EVERY FIRST HALF of each MATCH! You must win every match you play in, EVERY MATCH! When you enter the pitch to play any match you must know that you are there to win at all cost. Failure to do so is not an option. Once you step into the pitch it immediately becomes your battle ground to fight and win the victory. You must see yourselves as the winners of the match even before you the starting whistle sounds. Always remember to play to win. And when you win every match you automatically become the CHAMPIONS.

Being the World Cup Champions will open up REMARKABLE OPPORTUNITIES for you and our nation. Being the World Cup Champions will create INCREDIBLE POSSIBILITIES for our nation Nigeria and you.

    Make it happen!

  • Mikel under pressure to fulfill promise to Buhari

Super Eagles’ captain Mikel Obi has been put under intense pressure to lead the team to a resounding victory against Iceland on Friday, as well as fulfill his promise to President Muhammad Buhari that he (Mikel) is a man of his words.

NationSport confirmed that President Buhari spoke with Captain of the three-time African Champions few hours before Nigeria tackled Croatia in their first World Cup fixture in Russia, where Mikel reassured the President that the team would not disappoint.

Presidential delegation led by Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung as well as CBN Governor; Godwin Emefiele with the Nigerian Ambassador to Russia Steve Ugbah facilitated the phone conversation.

“If you can see that after the defeat, Mikel was down and withdrew more than his teammates, to the extent that he could not explain the defeat in a post-match interview. He knew the weight of disappointment.

“I can tell you for free that Mr President spoke with him(Mikel) on behalf of the team before the Croatia match.

“President Buhari reassured him(Mikel) of the full support of the nation. You can remember that team visited the President at Aso-rock before their departure for the England friendly where he had gave his assurance,” source in the know who asked to remain anonymous told NationSport.

Odediran Ogunsanya, a sport psychologist/analyst who shared views on the development said: “Super Eagles would have ordinarily won the match because the Croats were not at their best, but they could not because of the pressure they shouldered.

“The president’s call few hours to the kick off of the Croatia match should have been done days earlier. The timing for the call apparently pull up weight on the team.

“Was there any need for that? For me, I do not think so. The team psychologist should not have allowed these big shots from the Presidency to have access to the team. The team did not get the right inspiration from them. Their presence was a direct pressure which should not have happened.

“See, this is psychology, I can tell you that Eagles would beat Iceland with less pressure from government and from the team officials. Nigeria fans should please let the boys enjoy the game and with ease they will score and secure the much needed victory against Iceland.”

Mikel’s promise to President Buhari even though it fell flat in the face of the 0-2 loss inflicted by Croatia on Saturday, still hold hope as the Nigerian captain is now ready to make Nigerians smile in the next game against Iceland on Friday.

  • World Cup: Don’t give up on Super Eagles, Ekweremadu urges Nigerians

Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has urged Nigerians not to give up on Super Eagles after their Saturday loss to Croatia in ongoing World Cup competition in Russia.

Ekweremadu made the call in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu, on Sunday in Abuja.

The Eagles went down 0-2 in their first match in Group D, which also has Argentina and Iceland.

The deputy president of the senate expressed optimism that the team would get better as the tournament progressed.

“No doubt the team made costly mistakes and Nigeria is in a tight corner after the loss to Croatia.

“However, I am sure that the players and coaching crew have picked some lessons.

“The technical crew might have to rethink the team’s formation.

“Maybe, also, we stand to gain more from the players in their natural wings.

“I am an optimist. It is not over yet for the Super Eagles in Russia, especially given their traditional resilient spirit.

“I have no doubt also that they understand that they bear the expectations and hopes of over 180 million people on their shoulders.

“But, we owe them total support and prayers,” he said.

The Super Eagles will meet Iceland on Friday in their next group game.

Iceland had played a one-all draw with Argentina in their opening encounter, leaving Nigeria at the bottom of the group at the moment. (NAN)

  • Russia 2018: Okocha blames loss to Croatia on lack of creativity

Former Super Eagles midfield maestro, Jay Jay Okocha has blamed the team’s 0-2 loss to Croatia in their opening World Cup game on lack of creativity.

Okocha, who was a guest on Super Sports TV, said the team lost because the players played in wrong positions which didn’t bring out the best in them.

“We didn’t have a creative midfielder today. Mikel Obi has been a great servant but I think his best position is sitting in front of the back four.

“We saw him play as a defensive midfielder in Chelsea and he did so well,” he said.

The veteran player also added that Alex Iwobi was the most creative midfielder in the national team at the moment but playing him as a winger “was taking his strength from him”.

“Iwobi can play from the wings in Arsenal because there is a Mesut Ozil who brings creativity.

“I think the only reason why we lost this game is because our players played in the wrong positions and we didn’t get the best out of them,” he added.

Nigeria will take on Iceland on June 22 and play their last Group D game against Argentina on June 26. (NAN)

  • Russia 2018: Nigerians react to Super Eagles lost against Croatia

Some football fans on Saturday described the Super Eagles opening match at the 2018 FIFA World in Russia as “`unimpressive”.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Vatreni of Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

Mutiu Adepoju, an ex-international told NAN that it was sad that the team could not get a point from their first match.

Adepoju advised the team’s  coach Gernot Rohr to calm the players down and restrategise ahead of their second group match.

“”The defeat is a very sad one, going into the game. I previewed that the encounter against Croatia would not be easy owing to their level of technicality.

“”The coach should come up with another game plan for  the next match and also calm the players down,” he said.

Ifalade Oyekan, a board member of the Lagos State Football Association, told NAN that the players should step up their game.

Oyekan urged Nigerians not to write the team-off in the competition.

“”It is very unfortunate that the team was defeated but Nigerians should not be discouraged because this is football where anything is possible,” he said.

Also, Idowu Hassan, a grassroots coach in Lagos, told NAN that the Super Eagles formation against The Blazzers was bad.

Hassan urged the coach to come up with formidable tactics in their next encounter against Iceland.

“The formation adopted by Rohr cost us this game, if we still want to remain in the competition,  the coach must come up with something better in our next match.

Also, cross section of football fans in Abuja, who spoke to NAN at a viewing centre in Maitama, said the Eagles got their tactics and formation wrong against the Croats.

Temitope Badmus, a Civil Servant said the players were not coordinated, adding that the coach failed to make the necessary substitutions on time.

“I believe the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) did their best to ensure that this team was adequately prepared for the World Cup this time around.

“I must confess that I am really disappointed in the players as none could muster a good shot at goal.

“Mikel seemed lost, Moses kept falling and complaining at every slightest touch by the opponents and Coach Gernot Rohr made his substitutions too late.

“The coach must learn to substitute any player not playing well on time. I must say he failed in that regard today,” he said.

Obi Uchendu, a businessman noted that the goals conceded by the Eagles were “school boy errors”.

“We conceded all our goals through set pieces which clearly shows that the team is yet to learn the right approach in defending set pieces, which has been our major issue.

“The own goal conceded by Etebo could have been avoided and William Troost-Ekong had no reason wrapping his arms around Manduzkic the way he did.

“It was undoubtedly a clear penalty call by the referee,” he said.

Robert Akpan, a lawyer blamed the coach for the poor performance of the team.

“I think a lot of things did go wrong. Firstly, I think it was about the fitness and positioning of the players.

“In a situation where you field players like Wilfred Ndidi and Leon Balogun, who were reportedly injured and not a 100 percent fit to play in a crucial World Cup opening game what result do you expect to get?

“Balogun struggled throughout the week and only had a light training session on Friday.

“Ndidi was also not 100 percent fit and struggled throughout the Super Eagles pre-world cup preparations as he only got 90 minutes in the friendly against Czech Republic.

“It was therefore surprising to see that these players were allowed to play for the whole 90 minutes in a high profile match such as this one,” he said.

Akpan also added that most of the key players were played out of position which distorted the formation of the team.

“For instance, Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses who are natural wing players often dropped to deep to get the ball before they attack.

“Odion Ighalo was also starved of the necessary supply and had to track back often times to get the ball.

“This destabilized the whole formation of the team as the midfield struggled to keep position and lacked the necessary bite upfront to cause the Croats any serious problem.

“I hope the coach and his technical crew saw the flaws in the game and will hopefully get back to the drawing board to correct the errors,” he said.

Yisa Audu, a salesman, on his part said the Eagles were the better side, especially in the first half in which they dominated and dictated the pace of the game.

“We played well, especially in the first half but for the errors, we could have gone ahead to win or at most get a draw.

“I still believe that this our young team have the potential to go far in this tournament.

“We still have six points to play for and hopefully the team can up their game a little more and get maximum points or at least four from our remaining games,” he said.

The Super Eagles would play against the Strakarnir Okkar of Iceland on June 22 at the Volgograd Arena. (NAN)

  • World Cup: Why Super Eagles lost to Croatia – Rohr

Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Gernot Rohr, on Saturday said the team’s 0-2 loss to Croatia in their opening match of Russia 2018 was due to “many mistakes’’.

Rohr, while speaking at the post-match conference of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group D fixture, said he and his players were aware they made some important mistakes during the game.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the match played in Kaliningrad, the Eagles lost through an own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo and a Luka Modric penalty kick.

“We know we made some mistakes, too many important mistakes, and it is clear that we need to get better in order to move on,’’ the coach said.

He said the entire team was disappointed at the result, adding that they needed to work on being professional with the set-pieces.

“Our organisation was good, that is clear just as the tactics were not wrong, but we need to be more professional in the way we take the set-pieces. We need to be better before our next game,’’ he added.

Rohr, who admitted that the loss had made their task more herculean, said team Captain, Mikel Obi’s performance in the game was satisfactory just as he equally praised the defenders.

“Mikel has since I took over always been playing the way we deployed him today, and this has yielded results for us.

“But, he couldn’t have done better than he did today, because of the quality of those he was playing against.

“He had Ivan Rakitic of FC Barcelona and Luka Modric of Real Madrid playing against him, and they are of good quality and playing for clubs bigger than that of Mikel who plays in China.

“So, he really did well,’’ he said.

On the 62nd minute substitution of Alex Iwobi, the coach said it was not done out of poor performance by the Arsenal FC player.

“Iwobi deserved his starting place, based on his performances in the last few days. He only had big work to do with the full back, and this took much out of him.

“However, he did well and I don’t think he shouldn’t have started the game,’’ he said.

Rohr, however, assured that he and his assistants would go on to ensure the team was improved upon before their June 22 date with Iceland in Volgograd.

“We will improve because it is important for us. We have to get better in order to move forward,’’ he said. (NAN)
