  • World Cup: I don’t know these Eagles – Messi

Both teams clash on June 26 in the last game of group D at the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Saint Petersburg, a result that Messi says won’t be as important as the Iceland and Croatia encounters which the South Americans are aiming to win before facing their Africa opponents.

“It will be important to start strongly. Iceland did well in their last tournament so the first match
will not be comfortable. But these are the ones to win if you don’t want the next matches to be even
    more complicated.”

We don’t know so much about Nigeria but the African teams are normally compact, tough and strong. So it will be no walkover,” Messi told UK tabliod, Express.co.uk.

“We know it won’t be easy but I’m certain that Argentina has a squad capable of being a champion in
Russia. If the players all believe the same then we can be contenders.”

Argentina and Nigeria will be meeting for the fifth time at the World Cup with Nigeria yet to win the
    La Albiceleste in previous outings.

  • Super Eagles’ World Cup travel outfit causes stir on social media

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have caught the attention of the football world again with their unique travel outfit to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The team’s World Cup jersey has been the most talked-about in the build-up to the Coupe de Mundial, with many rating it as the best.

Football fans queued outside stores to get their hands the kits produced by Nike on it the day it was officially released into the market.

The Super Eagles had flown out of their Avita Resort in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Austria, to Russia on Monday for the 21st FIFA World Cup finals.

The players and officials landed in their Essentuki base in the early hours of Tuesday.

Pictures of the players in the traditional wear flooded the social media on the day of the team’s departure for Russia.

“First, it was the announcement of their tournament kits that sent football supporters crazy. Now it is their travel attire that has got everybody talking,” the Daily Mail wrote.

“They nailed it with their kits, and have delivered the goods yet again as they boarded their plane to Russia, wearing traditional Nigerian clothes – Buba and Sokoto.

“From head to toe, the Nigerian squad indulged in their culture and clearly has no intentions of blending in with the crowd.

“While sticking to tradition, however, designers of their outfits have also kept faith with football by placing footballs on the collars of the white-and -green outfits.”

BBC Sport reporter and presenter, John Bennett, tweeted: “First the amazing shirts, now these outfits… The Nigeria team is not only just getting on the plane to Russia but already winning.”

United Kingdom news outlet, The Sun, also wrote about Nigeria’s travel outfit.

“Nigeria once again won the fashion stakes at this year’s World Cup with their incredible travel outfit.

“Captain John Obi Mikel led his side to Russia in the head-turning green-and-white attire that featured footballs below the collars.

“The Nigeria squad looked every inch the dapper chaps as they arrived in Russia.

“This formal look has sent everyone into a frenzy all over again, with the immaculate design being complemented by matching shoes and hats.”

The Sun also compiled some social media users’ reactions about the outfit.

“Nigeria should be advanced to the World Cup final for the team’s travel outfits alone,” one social media user wrote.

Another wrote: “Why the hell are Nigerians’ everything so ‘yes’? First their kits, now these outfits!”

Another user posted: “Nigeria is winning this 2018 World Cup fashion parade.”

“If the Russia World Cup is all about fashion, Nigeria will lift the trophy before even kicking a ball,’’ another fan wrote, with one other writing, “Looking dapper guys.”

Yessentuki is a city in Stavropol Krai, Russia, located at the base of the Caucasus Mountains.

The Super Eagles fell 1-0 to Czech Republic last week in a friendly match in Russia after which Coach Gernot Rohr admitted that more work needed to be done ahead of the World Cup. For John Ogu, “After three weeks of Intense training , we off to Russia with full energy . May God lead us and give us the ability to function.”

Ahmed Musa simply announced on his handle that the Super Eagles were “off to Russia”.

Nigeria will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with the first match against Croatia in Kaliningrad, on Saturday 16th June.

  • FA sets semi final target for Argentina

Group stage opponents Argentina will throw all the arsenals in their armory into the tie against Super Eagles when both teams clash at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on June 26th.

Indications to this effect emerged Monday when Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia declared that the least the country desires to have is a semi final finish.

The submission implies that the FA expects the team not only to merge from the Group D where they have been pitched against Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria with flourish  but also fight their way to the last four.

Tapia who is hoping that Messi’s desire to clinch his first senior national team trophy comes to pass, noted that contribution of the Barcelona forward and 5-time Ballon d’Or winner has helped development of the game in the country on one hand and the football federation on the other.

“Being in the top four is a positive goal,” Tapia told TyC Sports and while speaking on Messi he described as best player in the world added “He gives a lot to Argentine soccer, let’s face it, “The growth we have in the AFA is because we have the best player in the world.”

Argentina will open their World Cup campaign against Iceland in Moscow on Saturday, and will round up their group stage ties with a clash against Nigeria on June 26.

Forecasts ahead of the battle of Saint Petersburg gave Argentina 65% chance of winning the encounter with Eagles having only 13% chance of winning while the possibility of the game ending on a draw is put at 22%.

  • Russia 2018: David Alaba in Super Eagles Camp

Blood it is said is thicker than water, a statement of fact which scientist are yet to prove wrong.

Friday June 8th 2018 was special if you like in the Super Eagles camp in Vienna Austria.  The team received what you may call an August visitor in June, less than five days in fact to the start of the World Cup in Russia.

It was the visit by the Austrian National team led by David Olatukunbo Alaba, the 25 year old Nigeria born Austria international and Bayern Munich midfielder.  The visit was confirmed by the team informing “@NGSuperEagles had guests who came to see them train on Friday. It was the Austrian National team led by David Alaba, a Nigerian by blood. #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong”

Born to a Nigerian father,George Alaba and mother Gina who migrated from Philippines, Alaba has made over 190 appearances for the Bundesliga side Bayern Munich carting away so many awards with the team and basketful of individual awards including a record 6-times Austrian footballer of the year award and back to back Austrian Sports personality of the year 2013 2014 just to mention a few.

You wonder what could have been going on in his mind in the course of the visit to Eagles camp.  No doubt if he had chosen to play for his fatherland his current age completely fits into the age bracket of the team coach Gernot Rohr had chosen for this year’s world Cup and you bet, with his exploits in bundesliga side Bayern Munich, he would have made both the provisional and final list.

Although Alaba did not make his impression of the Eagles known on his handle choosing to rather congratulate compatriot and Austrian tennis player Thiem Dominic for reaching his first French Open final and then announcing that he can hardly wait for Sunday’s Friendly match between Austria and Brazil, it is safe to say that the Nigerian blood in him may have imagined what it would have been like being in the Super Eagles jersey!.

Austria will take on Brazil at the Ernst Happel Stadium, Vienna on Sunday just four days to the start of the World Cup.

Austria have not qualified for the World cup since 2002. Their last appearance was in France 1998 where they made Group stage exit after playing 1-1 draw against Cameroon and Chile and then losing 2-1 to Italy.

Super Eagles are expected to depart Austria for Russia on Sunday. Alaba’s visit is a goodwill mission which could be summed up into “Wish you luck brothers, go there and do you best”

  • Eagles bank on ‘Positive anger’ against Croatia

Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that there is “positive anger” among his players and backroom staff, adding that he hopes that will translate into result yielding determination as the team prepares to open shop in Russia against Croatia.

Rohr, who believes he has taken the players through quality training and friendly shape ups, insists that the players have the capacity to up their game with a view to excelling in Russia.

The former Gabon and Burkina Faso handler maintained that everyone has learnt useful lessons from the friendly matches played and the results that were recorded, submitting that the unanimous agreement is that there is need for improvement even with six days to the start of the World Cup.

“After the loss to the Czech Republic, there is positive anger among the players & staff. This keeps us focused & humble. “Said Gernot Rohr whose contract with the NFF will see him equally take the Super Eagles to the next Nations Cup in Cameroon in 2019 irrespective of the performance achieved in Russia.

The back to back defeat of the Eagles by England and Czech Republic, has triggered off mixed reactions among soccer fans in the country with some insisting there are positives to be taken from the defeats, while others say the defeats is an indication that the team will struggle to survive the group stage.

“It is better for them to lose the friendly matches and play better in the competition. If they record easy wins in the friendly matches they will assume they have arrived and that will be counterproductive” Said a group of sports enthusiasts at one of the newspaper stands Friday in Lagos

Eagles will begin their quest for glory against Croatia on June 16, a match which many say they must win if they are to lay the foundation of survival in the Group stage.

Those who hold this view insist that winning the first match even with a small margin will boast the team’s confidence to tackle Iceland and Argentina respectively.

Nigerians will however be praying that prediction by Google forecast does not come to pass as it will mean starting the campaign on a losing note.  The forecast indicate that Nigeria has only 17% chance of winning the June 16 tie while Croatia stands 57% chance of winning.

The match is predicted to stand 26% chance of ending in a goalless or score draw.

  • Russia 2018: Super Eagles midfield needs right combination, says Bewarang

Bitrus Bewarang, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director, has urged Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, to strike the right balance in the team’s midfield ahead of the World Cup.

Bewarang gave the advice on Wednesday in Abuja while reacting to the Super Eagles 0-1 loss to the Czech Republic national team in pre-World Cup friendly match.

The match, played in Austria where the Super Eagles are camping for the World Cup, was the final warm-up match slated for Nigeria before the team departs for Russia.

A Tomas Kalas 25th minute strike condemned the Super Eagles to their second consecutive defeat, having lost 2-1 to England in their previous friendly match at the Wembley Stadium on June 2.

Bewarang, who was a former Super Eagles Assistant Coach, said Nigeria’s midfield had to be more mobile.

“I feel that we need to get the right combination in our midfield. We need speed and more mobility in the midfield so that the attack could function better.’’

Coach Rohr made two changes to the team that started against England on June 2, with Wilfred Ndidi and John Ogu given a nod in place of Joel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi.

Bewarang, a former Plateau United Coach and General Manager, however, expressed the belief that with 10 days to Nigeria’s first match against Croatia, the coach had to stabilise his team.

“I think the coach has been trying to build a team and I believe that now he has seen all the players from the various friendly matches.

“With 10 days left before Nigeria’s first match, I am sure what is next for him will be to stabilise the team.

“Hopefully, by the time we play our first match on June 16, we will be able to get the result we desire,’’ the former Green Eagles player said.

He, however, said he was optimistic that the Super Eagles would perform well in Russia.

“As a coach I always believe that we should always expect the best from our players.

“Our players under Rohr have been doing well in terms of passion and dedication.

“That is why everybody has the confidence that they will do better than in previous competitions and I believe that too,’’ Bewarang said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles managed to win only one of their five pre-World Cup warm up matches.

A Victor Moses penalty in the 61st minute gave the team a narrow victory over Poland in Warsaw on March 23, before they fell to a 2-0 loss to Serbia four days later in London.

The Super Eagles also drew 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Port Harcourt on May 25 before subsequent defeats by England and Czech Republic. (NAN)

  • Fans raise alarm over Uzoho, Super Eagles’ defence performance

Football fans in Ebonyi have raised alarm over the performances of Super Eagles’ first choice goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, and the entire backline as the team prepares for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The fans were reacting to the Super Eagles’ 0-1 loss to the Czech Republic national team in an international friendly in Austria on Wednesday in Abalkaliki.

Benjamin Umeh, Goalkeeper Trainer of the defunct Nitel Vasco Dagama FC of Enugu, noted that Uzoho was culpable in the lone goal scored by the Czech Republic in the first half of the encounter.

“Uzoho should have held the ball instead of parrying it to an opponent as he has proved vulnerable to dead ball situations in his previous Eagles appearances.

“The Eagles defence should realise that its opponents in the friendly matches are mince meats compared to more competitive opponents it would meet in the World Cup,” he said.

Harrison Obasi, Coach of Ebonyi FA Cup Runners Up, Alter Nite FC, noted that Nigerians should not be alarmed if Uzoho falters at the World Cup in Russia.

“Ikechukwu Ezenwa bailed the country during the qualifiers when all goalkeeping hopes were lost following Daniel Akpeyi’s erratic performances against South Africa in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers.

“Ezenwa performed creditably in subsequent World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon, Zambia and Algeria and it is still a puzzle how Rohr preferred Uzoho to him,” he said.

Supporting Obasi’s assertion, Chima Ojigwe, a soccer Historian, said that with the goalkeeping predicament, Nigeria found itself during the World Cup qualifiers, Ezenwa could had been the best bet for the team.

“Uzoho was drafted into the team after the qualifiers and if experience becomes the determining factor between him and Ezenwa, the latter who was in goal during the qualifiers, could have been the better bet.

“It is instructive to note that countries which have excelled in the World Cup opt for experienced goalkeepers as exemplified with Egypt which recalled veteran Essam El-Hadary and Germany, which worked towards Manuel Neuer’s fitness,” he said.

Ojeikere Aikhoje, Chief Executive Officer of Match Room Sports and Media Ltd, however, urged Nigerians to accept the fact that Rohr had accepted Uzoho, as his first choice goalkeeper.

“Rohrs body language suggests that he intends to use Uzoho as his first choice in goal by fielding him in all the friendly matches from the Poland game to that of Czech Republic.

“My concern is that he should have tested Ezenwa in the friendly matches but as the coach, he knows the reasons for opting for Uzoho instead of Ezenwa and other keepers,” he said.

Miss Chinelo Akpa, a Youth Activist, however, urged Nigerians to pray for the Eagles instead of blaming their poor performances in the friendly matches to certain players in the squad.

The defence has not lived up to expectations but the entire team should take responsibility for the team’s not-too-impressive performances.

“We should instead pray for the team to imbibe the lessons of the friendly games and give Nigerians, a credible World Cup performance that they desire,” he said. (NAN)
