  • Eagles lose 0-1 to Czech Republic in Austria

Super Eagles on Wednesday in Austria lost by a lone goal to Czech Republic in their last friendly match ahead of the World cup in Russia.  Eagles who had earlier lost 2-1 to England at the Wembley had hoped to post a spirit lifting performance against the Czechs but that failed to come to pass.

Both teams had played a very cautions game in the first half devoid of any impressive run.  It was however the Czechs who intermittently showed signs of hunger to earn a victory.

The team mounted pressure harvesting as many as eight corners kicks in the first half one of which was converted in the 25th minute thanks to Tomas Kalas. In comparison to the match against England where the Eagles failed to come to the party in the first half, the first half against Czech though not too impressive was better.

On resumption of second half the Eagles made some interesting moves equally earning over a dozen corner kicks none of which was converted.

Moses and Odion Ighalo had a couple of shots on goal that however failed to beat the Czech Republic goalkeeper Vaclik.

The match itself had to be suspended for at least 10 minutes after the 59th minute following heavy down pour.

Despite the dull nature of the match it provided opportunity for Wilfred Ndidi to return to action.  Nigeria played a total of six friendly matches as part of the preparation for the World cup which kicks off June 14.

The matches were against Argentina, Serbia, Poland, Dr Congo, England and Czech Republic.  The team won two of the matches against Argentina and Poland, drew against DR Congo and lost to Serbia, England and Czech Republic.

  • Super Eagles are unbeatable without Messi – Rojo

Argentina defender Marcos Rojo has revealed that without Lionel Messi it will be difficult for the Albiceleste to win against Super Eagles in Russia.

The Manchester United centre-back also revealed that the Albiceleste wants “payback” for Argentina’s World Cup final agony four years ago, but conceded the three-time African champion as blocking stone in the Group D fixtures for the Russia mundial.

He however hopes that Messi – considered the best player in the world and regarded by many as the greatest of all time- will be in full form into the World Cup and at his best form against the Super Eagles on June 26 at Saint Petersburg Stadium.

“It’s Nigeria again!, yea I think it’s three or four times now we’ve been drawn with Nigeria and it will be a difficult group. Croatia and Iceland are in there too. Hopefully, Lionel Messi will be in form and can do something for us against the Africans and the rest.”

The 26-year-old continues, “Obviously, it’s a really important thing and a big deal for any Argentinian to wear the national team shirt,” he told Inside United.  “We really feel the shirt a lot and we defend our colours.

“We give everything when we are wearing it and we want payback for the way things happened at the last World Cup. We will do everything to give our fans the possibility to celebrate winning the trophy again,” he added.

Though Argentina have a final warm-up fixture against Israel on Saturday before the action gets under way in Russia, they however hope for fancy chances in Russia, despite struggling to actually clinch a spot, before Lionel Messi bagged a hat-trick against Ecuador in the final South American qualifier.

  • Making a point with Kanu’s lost but found N4m

It is no longer news that the $11,000 about (N4millon) stolen from former Arsenal and Super Eagles forward Nwankwo Kanu at the Sheremetyevo airport in Russia has been recovered by the police and given back to him.

The former Portsmouth ace had hit Russia via London to participate in FIFA legends game which took place at the Kaliningrad where Nigeria incidentally will open her quest for glory with a clash against Croatia on June 16.

The robbery which was reported by the Russia News Agency, TASS revealed Kanu on arrival at his hotel discovered that the money had disappeared from his baggage leading to the involvement of the police, and within a short time the police had taken two luggage handlers into custody confirming later that the money has been recovered and handed back to the two time African Footballer of the Year.  An elated Kanu confirmed that he has indeed received the cash back.

The swiftness with which the Russian Police handled the issue ensuring that positive result is achieved in less than 48 hours is no doubt worthy of commendation and an indication that the Russian Authorities are indeed set for the World Cup.

Theft and Robbery according to a recent report by Moscow Times Account for 42% of Crimes in Russia

There is no denying the fact that light fingered persons abound everywhere and more so at venues when the entire world would be converging.

The Kanu missing but found cash episode may have sent warning signs to those heading to the world cup to be very careful at the same time it has left no one in doubt that the Russian Authorities are prepared to battle such vices to a standstill if and when it occurs. With CCTV cameras reportedly mounted virtually everywhere it is certain that those who chose to be on the wrong side of the law during period of the World cup will not be having a tea party.

The lesson to be learnt in this short episode is that a system that works can be trusted to deliver when it matters most.

Few months ago it was reported that thieves broke into the home of former England captain John Terry while he was away on holiday with his wife.

He had posted a picture where he was skiing with his wife Toni on holiday on Instagram. The thieves carted away jewelries and other materials worth over £400,000. It didn’t take long before the burglars were caught and jailed. With a system that works those who choose to run foul of the law will ultimately be boxed into a corner by the law!

  • Winning the World Cup

From the picture painted on Wednesday at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, those who do not believe in the present Super Eagles would need to have a rethink.

Not only is the team that is bound for the 2018 FIFA World Cup starting on June 14 in Russia expected to do well at the championship, the Eagles are also being tipped to return to Nigeria in July with the prized trophy.

The occasion was the official presentation of the team to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung.

Some of the present team’s strengthen, which is expected to work for them in Russia, according to the handlers included their youthfulness, discipline, unity, and the clearance of all their welfare allowances.

They are also scheduled to play some friendly matches that will prepare them better for the championship.

Speaking on the team, the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick said “This Super Eagle’s you are seeing today is the most disciplined, the most united in the historiographic literature of the annals of football in the country.

“And I am happy to tell you that according to FIFA statistics, this team is the youngest going to the World Cup, which means this team will serve you for long, this team will serve you in the next five years. We have a team that will prosecute this World Cup and a team that will go for the next World Cup in 2022 and we have a team that will also go for the World Cup in 2026, because you have created that environment for us to thrive.

“I can assure that this team you are seeing today  will make Nigeria very proud. It is a team that is very disciple and discipline is the bedrock of any success.

“We thank you for providing that fatherly love at all times and we know when we go to Russia, with your magic wand, by the special grace of God we will come back to this same chamber with the trophy.” he said

Dalung said, “Once again Nigeria is drawn in difficult group along our perennial opponents Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.  It is difficult but by no means a mission impossible. The team and the technical crew are in high Spirit and are highly motivated to soar above their opponents at the World Cup.

The captain of the team, Mikel Obi, also sure of victory said: “This is the first time we will be going to a tournament like this without any issues on money, bonuses or anything like that. I think everything is sorted now for us and all we have to do is to go out there as players and make this country proud.

“And with your support as the father and leader of this country, we will go out there, give our best and come back with the trophy.” he assured

This, to some Nigerians sounded like a wild goose chase considering the poor performance of their predecessors in the past editions of the FIFA World Cup at the senior level.

The present team, according to some football loving Nigerians, also haven’t got the experience and exposure most of the World Cup finalists have to their advantage.

As a starter, they noted that the team may find it very difficult to scale through the group stage as they are up against world football giants including Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

Sensing that it was not going to be an easy task to win the World Cup trophy in Russia, the Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, in his remarks at the short ceremony simply said “Your Excellency, to come out of this difficult group with Argentina, Croatia, Iceland is the first step but I think the players are able to do it.”

Notwithstanding the hurdles the team would have to contend with in Russia, President Buhari gave the team his fatherly blessings.

“This is our time; we look up to you to make us proud. All Nigerians join me in saying to you, best of luck,” he said.

No doubt, many football loving Nigerians will continue to pray and hope that such luck will take the Super Eagles far in tournament.

    Osinbajo humour

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last Tuesday night again showed that he was very well qualified to go into comedy.

Those who attended the 2018 Democracy Day Dinner / Gala Night at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja will not agree less that Osinbajo will rank high with the best comedians in the country or perform better than them if he ventures into comedy.

When it was his turn to make remarks, Osinbajo made the gathering to laugh and laugh with jokes after jokes.

He started by saying “I for one can say that five years ago if someone had told me that I would be Vice President at all, let alone celebrating three years in office, I would have doubted that they were thinking right, but here we are.

“One of the reasons why I never thought I would be in politics is because I always thought I had enough baggage already.

“I recall that when I was about to rent a place to live, the landlord said to me that there were two kinds of tenants he didn’t want. He did not want a lawyer and he didn’t want an Ijebu man.”

The hall, which was filled to the brim, immediately erupted in laughter.

After the laughter subsided, Osinbajo went on “And I qualified on both disqualifications. So, now you can imagine what it is like to add one more – a politician, to all of that.

“In fact, I was greatly discouraged when a gentleman at an event like this, told a story about how an armed robber walked into a bank and there were three people standing there and he said to the first, pointing a gun at him saying, “Give me your money,” and the man said, “I am a doctor”, and he said “bring your money”. The robber pointed to the next man and said, “I am sure you are a teacher, bring your money.”

“He went to the third person and said give me your money,” and the man replied, “I am a politician”, and he replied saying, “okay, give me my money”.

The gathering again burst out laughing and clapping for the Vice President.

Not done, he added “I think, with all these baggage, one must be careful about being a lawyer, a politician and then an Ijebu man.

This again made the guests to almost laugh out their hearts from their chests.

    Shattered hope

The expectations of some athletes were last Tuesday dashed at the 2018 Democracy Day Dinner/Gala Night held at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The occasion was used to receive the Team Nigeria that participated at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia.

While making his remarks at the occasion, the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung had disclosed that athletes and officials that excelled at the Games were rewarded with cash bonuses for winning medals.

According to him, Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists were rewarded with $5000, $3000 and $2000 respectively.

But from what played out at the end of the dinner, it was clear that the athletes were still expecting some cash reward from the Presidency.

After Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made his remarks, he went ahead to cut the cake.

Rather than make pronouncement for additional cash for the athletes after Osinbajo cut the cake, the Master of Ceremony (MC) immediately called for the rendition of the national anthem.

Sensing that the event has come to an end without any cash splash on them, the athletes immediately started grumbling before they filed out of the hall to their waiting bus at the car park.

  • Czech friendly: Eagles eager for better performance

Super Eagles Captain John Obi Mikel has expressed satisfaction with the support the team received despite playing what has been dubbed below par at the Weekend in Wembley.  The match according to him is an excellent test for the team ahead of the next friendly against Czech Republic on Wednesday. The former Chelsea ace and Tiajin Teda midfielder remained positive ahead of the next shape up match.

“Thank you for your support this weekend! ??It was a good test against a strong side – onto the next game.  #SoarSuperEagle” he submitted Monday.

Meanwhile the team engaged in total training in Austria on Monday, with the players apparently determined to post a better outing when the face the Czechs.  Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr had shortly after the match against England hinted that further comprehensive training will be done with a view to performing better, insisting that the team  was poor against the Lions who were however checkmated better in the second half.

“We just have to train harder making the best use of the few days available before the world cup “said Rohr who announced his final 23-man list after the Wembley showdown leaving Ola Aina and Mikel Agu.

Information from the team ‘s base  indicate that all the various depart of the team where specially given extra drills even as the three goalkeepers took their turn to face some well taken close range shots.  Just as Nigeria lost to England, Croatia equally lost to Brazil.  The two teams put all the experiences they have had in the works when the open campaign June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Russia.

  • Tiwa Savage catches the Eagles jersey bug

Sensational songwriter and singer Tiwa Savage is not one to come  last in any front.

The diva whose songs and collaborations never fail to draw attention has equally joined in the frenzy of the forth coming world cup, identifying with the wave making Super Eagles jersey.

The Gernot Rohr tutored side took on the Three Lions of England at the Wembley on Saturday, in a tie most people said would be the real test of Eagles readiness to for the World cup.

Though the team lost the match 2-1 it did not remove anything from attention drawn by the jersey. In the first half when Eagles appeared  not to have come to the party many took to the social media to imply that they were merely showcasing their new outfit.

But the song mistress was not in the mood to join issues with reports concerning the match but rather dished her photo decked in a camouflage version of the Super Eagles jersey.  Looking over her shoulders in the pix that appears   to ask, “what do you think?

The Business Administration graduate of Kent University whose collaborations with Wizkid has remained a talking point among his teeming fans with some insinuating that the greeting has gone beyond the elbows.

The Laba-laba exponent is among the top entertainers expected to further garnish the fun that will be at the disposal of soccer fans when the world cup kick off in 10 days especially at some corporate viewing centres.

Super Eagles currently in Austra are set file out against their Czech Republic counterparts in the final friendly match before hitting Russia where they will confront Croatia June 16, Iceland June 22nd and Argentina June 26 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr who was visibly disappointed by his team’s performance against England at the Wembley will be hoping that the team blend better against the Czechs on Wednesday June 6th.

  • Rohr’s final selections will make the country proud-Izilein

Former Super Falcons’ coach Godwin Izilein has said that Nigeria’s national team coach, Gernot Rohr picked the best players that would make the country proud at the World Cup in Russia.

Izilein gave the assurance while speaking with the News men on Monday in Benin.

According to him, the team has had the best of preparation and played quality friendly matches, adding that what the team needs now is prayers.

“As for the players picked by the coach and comments over his selections, I quite commend the coach for appearing not ruffled by the comments.

“Rohr’s critics may not see why the coach picked those he picked.

“He knows what he wants and if he feels those he picked will give him what he wants, let’s wish him the best,” he said.

Speaking on the Super Eagles friendly match with England, Izilein said he was not disturbed with the outcome of the game.

The former Super Falcons tactician noted that those that spied on the Eagles tactical play would have been disappointed.

“Our opponents came in there to pick one or two things about the eagles to prepare their team against us, but I am happy that they saw nothing.

“They are still wondering if this is the team they will be playing against.

“To me, I am happy about the outcome. The Eagles will surprise the world in Russia; I am very convinced that the Eagles will do well at the World Cup,” Izilein said.

It will be recalled that Rohr on Sunday released the final names of 23 players that will represent Nigeria at the World Cup.

  • GERNOT ROHR: ‘I’m not superstitious, no lucky suit for Russia 2018’

Though no formal dress is required to manage a soccer team let alone at the FIFA World Cup, many national team managers at Russia 2018 would expectedly turn up with neatly cut suits from leading brands such as Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Boglioli, Gucci, Hugo Boss and Burberry.

Of course, style is the man hence it was not a coincidence that the five previous coaches that had managed the Super Eagles at world’s most-watched championship actually turned up in different style and attire

For instance, Clemens Westerhof who led Nigeria to her maiden World Cup appearance was ubiquitous with his brown and patterned jacket he reportedly referred to as his ‘lucky charm’.

At France’98, Bora Milutinovic who is a member of the FIFA TSG (technical study group) in Russia,  turned out in different shades of  suit (black and blue colours) while the highly revered Chief Adegboye Onigbinde caught the suit bug at Korea/Japan 2002.  At South Africa 2010, Swede Lars Lagerbäck was resplendent in Nigeria’s national team gear, as was the late Stephen Keshi at the last Mundial in Brazil.

Perhaps, no coach at Russia 2018 will be more anxious about his attire than French coach Herve Renard – the only foreign coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two different countries, Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire in 2012 and 2015 respectively. Renard claimed his tight-fitting white shirt was a lucky charm.

But Super Eagles’ Franco-German manager, Gernot Rohr, says he’s not going to be encumbered by such worries as he sets his sight on leading Nigeria to glory at her sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

“I do not have any lucky suit for the World Cup,” Rohr who will celebrate his 65th birthday on June 28 told The Nation. “I am not a superstitious person; I just try to be professional at all times. I hope my lucky colours in Russia will be the green-white-green of Nigeria.

Rohr, appointed in August 2016 can truly be described as a football man through-and-through, featuring for top European sides like Bayern Munich and Girondins Bordeaux in France, before he retired into coaching.

As a manager, he earned his stripes in European football when he led Bordeaux to runners up to Bayern Munich in the final of the now rested UEFA Cup (now known as Europa Cup) in 1996 and earning that famous thrashing 3-0 thrashing of Italian giants, AC Milan in the quarter-finals. After Bordeaux, he was briefly sports director at Eintracht Frankfurt. He has also coached at FC Nantes; Étoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia and served as national team coach of Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso before berthing in Nigeria last year.

He won his first game in charge of the Super Eagles, defeating Tanzania by a lone goal in Uyo, Nigeria and last October, Nigeria-led team became the first African side to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a 1–0 win against Zambia.

On the eve of the team’s departure to England en route to Russia, Rohr provides a glimpse of what to expect of the Super Eagles at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 in an interview with MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN. Excerpts…

    Friendly with England

The friendly against England is just another build up game for us. Of course, we like to win every game and play good football all the time but we want to see more and try out more things during friendly games. I also believe that a big, beautiful stadium like Wembley with the fans coming out in large numbers will provide a real World Cup atmosphere for us.

Picking the right squad for Russia 2018

It is always a big challenge to pick some players from a pool of talents especially for a big football country like Nigeria. It is a good problem for coaches to do this sometimes. For me, I know these players, young, talented, disciplined, hungry and very committed players. We worked together to pick the World Cup ticket from a very tough qualifying group, so I can trust them to do it again at a bigger stage like the World Cup. The goalkeeping position in a team is a very important one. We have confidence in the goalkeepers we have in the team right now. Our goalkeeper coaches Alloy Agu and Enrico Pionetti have also been working extra hard with these goalkeepers to help get them to the level we desire and the response has been encouraging. We should all get behind these goalkeepers, support and encourage them so they can be motivated and be able to give their best for the country when called upon.

    Backbones of Super Eagles

We have a few very experienced players, such as our captain John Obi Mikel (Tianjin Teda, China). Our two central defenders William Troost-Ekong (Bursaspor, Turkey) and Leon Balogun (Mainz, Germany) are also very important to us. We have players such as Victor Moses (Chelsea, England) and Alex Iwobi (Arsenal, England) – they are also very important for us. We have many young players, and everyone has a role to play in our team. But the most important leaders are our captain Mikel, the vice-captain Ogenyi Onazi, and Ahmed Musa also.

    Target at Russia 2018

We all want to make it out of the group, and that’s already difficult enough. Of course, our fans dream about Nigeria making it out of this difficult group and perhaps even going far in the tournament after we beat Argentina. But we are no dreamers. As coach and technical team, we will enter the tournament with realistic and modest expectations, but also with ambition.

Group D as Group of Death

My honest assessment is that this is a very tough group, maybe the toughest at the World Cup. We are not the favourites to make it out of this group because we are the least ranked team here. However, we are confident, hungry and very determined to fight to qualify from this group. Remember we were not the favourites in our World Cup qualifying group in Africa but we made it, so we can do it again. Iceland is a good team with very strong and highly motivated players. They will be difficult to beat. Our group will be very tough together with them, Croatia and Argentina. We will need to be at our best for all the games. Of course, I would have wanted an easier group. But it is what it is. Now we have this strong group. If you look at our FIFA ranking, we are only in 52nd position – the others are far ahead of us. I think they sit in position 14, eight and four. That means we are the underdogs. We were only in pot four in the draw, we mustn’t forget that. But we are an underdog with ambition and we want to get into the knockout stages, even though it will be very difficult. That’s our target.

Reflection on victory over Argentina in friendly

Beating Argentina was good for our confidence but do not forget it was just a friendly. We should expect a tougher, more difficult match at the World Cup. We respect them but we will not be afraid of them. Our fans believe in us and have very high expectations but we must let them know that the World Cup is a very tough tournament. We must remain humble, stay hungry and committed. We must take things step by step, one game at a time. Lionel Messi is the best player in the world and he was not there when we played them in Krasnodar last November. At the World Cup, we will not be playing against Messi alone; we will be playing the entire Argentina team. We are not playing against one player; we will be facing 11 players. So we have to prepare very hard to stop this great team with so many great players.

    Super Eagles vs. Messi

Of course, we all know him and we know of his quality. But we also played against some really good players in our qualification and were able to deal with them. We had Riyad Mahrez at Algeria; we played against Sadio Mane and Senegal in a friendly. We know how to organise our defence against top quality players. What I can tell you now already is that there will be no man-marking of Messi. We did this in the old days, even I, but it’s not used too often these days. We will deal with Messi or any big player as a collective. But often you won’t be able to keep top players quiet over the whole 90 minutes.

Surpassing Super Eagles’ second round record

I am happy and so privileged to have finally achieved this target of leading a team to the World Cup. Every coach dreams of being a part of the biggest football fiesta in the world. I have had big experiences with some clubs in the major European club competitions but the World Cup is very special. Our plan and preparation is to get beyond our group. We have at least three games to play at the World Cup. We want to give our best in these games so that we can stay in the competition and then have more games to play.

Chances of African teams in Russia

Good chances. Egypt is the best team in Africa as voted by CAF. They have the best coach. They have a chance in the group with Russia. The whole world will follow the group with the hosts. They also have the best player in Africa in Mohamed Salah. I also think Senegal is strong, Tunisia, too, based on their strong league. A lot is possible for the African teams. I believe that the African teams have the capability to do well at the World Cup. African football has improved greatly and African players are now at a high level like their European and South American counterparts. I hope this is reflected in how the African teams play in Russia.

    Relationship with NFF

I am happy to be working for Nigeria. I have had a very cordial and professional relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation. I have been able to operate without any interference and also work in a very good, conducive environment. These are the most important things for me. I have very good relationship with my players, technical assistants and backroom staff. The fans have also been wonderful.

Most difficult decision as Super Eagles’ coach

I have not had to make any difficult decision since I came to Nigeria. This is because we take all our decisions together as a team. We work collectively. We have a policy of strong solidarity as a team. We want to win together, lose together, enjoy together and suffer together both on and off the pitch. We stand together at all times.

Likely winner of Russia 2018 World

The favourites at every World Cup are Brazil, Germany, Argentina together with Spain, France. These teams have big players with huge experience, winning mentality and quality. Talking about the stars of the tournament, I hope some of the young players in my team become the stars of this World Cup and my team also shines like a million stars at the tournament.

    KICK-OFF

    England 0-0 Nigeria

There is a minute’s applause before kick-off at Wembley in memory of England’s World Cup winner Ray Wilson and former midfielder Ray Wilkins, who both passed away recently.

  • Eagles Captain buys headphones for teammates

Remember Shakespeare?  I don’t think you have forgotten him neither have you forgotten his play Twelfth Night. “If music be the food of love, play on, Give me excess of it; that surfeiting, the appetite may sicken and so die”

Music no doubt is not only the food of love, but has also been found to be the food of concentration depending on the type you listen to.

Soft rhythm and even sometimes just instrumentals like the Saxophone some say could aid maximum concentration.

Perhaps that was what Super Eagles Captain John Obi Mikel was thinking when he decided to buy every member of the World cup bound Super Eagles team a head phone.

Certainly a headphone is meant to help the user listen to music, video of his choice without necessarily distracting a neighbour who may not at that moment be interested in what you are watching or listening to.  It hands you an opportunity to select and privately listen to inspirational song or track that can help you focus and ultimately serve as ginger.

The World cup is 14 days away and every team hoping to make an impact will not only need to train well but will also need to be focused. Ability to concentrate is a plus which can aid action on the pitch.

Captain Obi Mikel wants maximum cooperation and concentration from every player, believing it is the only way they can as a team give their all. A leader is not only reactive but equally proactive.

A captain who knows his onions will mobilise his team, lift their spirit to achieve set target. Although the former Chelsea ace who now plays and captains Chinese Super League side Tiajin Teda will lead his team in a friendly match against Three Lions of England later today at Wembley, the gesture is not aimed only at today encounter but is expected to sow seed of maximum concentration on the players all through the duration of the world cup in Russia.

Of course his teammates appreciated his effort. John Ogu revealed this appreciation when he displayed his own headphone on social media.

“The Super Eagles captain @mikel_john_obi bought each member of the @NGSuperEagles a @beatsbydre head phones said @ogujohnugo at their camp the @HiltonWembley Saturday.

Eagles will open their campaign at the world cup on June 16 against Croatia before taking on Iceland and Argentina respectively.
