Come and Fight for Shirt, Alloy Agu Tells Enyeama

Super Eagles Goalkeeper Trainer, Alloy Agu on Monday confirmed that Vincent Enyeama will return to the national senior team now that he is back to full fitness and action with his club side.

Speaking in an interview on Brilla Fm, the former goalkeeper explained that the national team handlers have reached out to the 35-year-old who announced his retirement in 2015 to come and compete with the other goal keepers.

The decision to give Enyeama and other eligible players’ equal and unhindered opportunity to prove their prowess according Agu, was essential as the Super Eagles Manager is determined to get the best 23 players to represent Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia.

He further explained that there is no automatic shirt for Eyeanma when he returns stating that other goalkeepers who have so far proved their mantled under Coach Gernor Rohr are good in their own right.

He said, ‘It’s important for us to know that Nigerians want the best and safest hands at the world cup. We want to look around and give everybody the opportunity. It is good that Vincent has returned to fitness and is back with his club.

‘We’ve been in touch with him. The Coach has spoken with him too but, Vincent must fight for his place. It will not be an automatic place for him or any other goalkeeper.  I have told Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Dele Alampasu, Daniel Akpeyi, and others to match up as Vincent is being wooed back.”

There are however no indications whether Enyeama who has earned over a century of international caps will be invited for the last qualifier match the Super Eagles has with Algeria in November 10 and for the high profile friendly match the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has secured with Argentina which will be played in Russia, November 14.

Alloy Agu who described the high profile friendly match as a right step toward preparing for the 2018 World Cup explained that the two matches will be a test on who will eventually be the number one goalkeeper for the national team in Russia.

The goalkeeper trainer said the national team handlers are expecting a favourable draw of the world cup in the first week December.

Juve, Atletico plot N7billion Onyekuru raid

Super Eagles forward, Henry Onyekuru may leave premier league side Everton without kicking a ball for the club as Serie A giants Juventus and La Liga side, Atletico Madrid are keen to snap him up for £15m (N7billion), according to DailyMail.

The Toffees signed the 20-year-old Nigerian in a £7million deal from KAS Eupen last summer but had to send him out on loan to Belgium club Anderlecht because of work permit issues.

Onyekuru has since been banging in goals, scoring six times in his last five games and caught the attention of both Juventus and Atletico with a brilliant performance against Paris Saint German in the UEFA Champions League where he destroyed Brazilian defender Dani Alves before hitting the woodwork.

Anderlecht went on to lose 4-0 but the on loan Everton star did enough to make Diego Simeone consider him as a potential long time replacement for Fernando Torres at Atletico while the Old Lady are desperate to add a forward player after missing out on Senegal international Keita Balde to AS Monaco.

Everton lost 5-2 to Arsenal Sunday in the premier league and their topscorer is Wayne Rooney with four goals, two less than Onyekuru.

  • Leicester win: Ndidi goes philosophical

    Leicester win: Ndidi goes philosophical

Super Eagles forward midfielder Wilfred Ndidi gladly went philosophical Saturday after Leicester City earned a vital 1-2 away win at the expense of Swansea City.  Ndidi who has world cup ticket in the kitty following Super Eagles qualification for Russia 2018, addressed the three points garnered by the embattled former league champions as if it were a human being in his submission shortly after the match.”Hey 3 points, it’s good to have you here. Hope to have you next time. Cheers!!!!,” he enthused.

Ndidi played for the entire full 90 minutes with Leicester City posting 45 % possession as against Swansea’s 55%.  Same cannot be said of compatriots Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa.  While Iheanacho was put on the reserve bench, Musa was not dressed for the match. Interestingly Algerian international

Riyad Mahrez who is likely to face Super Eagles in the last world cup qualifier billed for Algiers  November 5, also saw 87 minutes action for Leicester posting an impressive performance and setting up both Leicester City’s goals to ensure first premier league win since August 19.

Ndidi got an impressive 6.5 rating with Mahrez posting 7.5 performance rating.

Under the stewardship of Michael Appleton, who was placed in temporary charge following Shakepeare’s departure on Tuesday, the three points took the visitors out of the relegation zone.

A rejuvenated Mahrez was directly involved in Leicester’s goals at the Liberty Stadium, sending in the cross that led to Federico Fernandez heading into his own net in the 25th minute for the opener.

Shinji Okazaki doubled their lead with a close-range finish from Mahrez’s cushioned pass early in the second half, although Leicester’s two-goal advantage didn’t last for long.

Alfie Mawson’s volleyed finish on the turn in the 56th minute gave Swansea hope, but Paul Clement’s side could not find an equaliser and have now lost four of their five home league outings this season.

Odemwingie tilting towards golf, congratulates Eagles

Strong indications abound that former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie may ultimately settle for golf as retirement game of passion.

The Madura United of Indonesia striker has in recent times been dishing out more tweets on his exploits on the golf course with strong feeling of satisfaction.

Odemwingie who joined the Indonesian side in April this year has so far made about 18 appearances for the club with 18 goals to show for his effort.  Madura are currently at the 5th place on Indonesian Liga 1 log with 59 points in 30 matches and a billed to host table toppers Bhayangkara on Monday.

Odemwingie however has been spending spare time on the golf course sharping his skills, competing and generally catching his fun. In a post Saturday the former Nigerian international asked after a shot on the course; whose finish is better? Mine or the Indonesian guys?

His engagement on the course and even on the pitch for Madura united did not however stop the former Stoke City forward from making time to congratulate Super Eagles over their recent qualification for the World Cup in Russia.

An elated Odemwingie had this for the team “Congratulations ??! Well done Super Eagles ? for securing a place in the World Cup #Russia2018”

Also in the mind of the 36 year old is heartfelt condolence for Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda who died few days ago after on the pitch collision with a teammate. “Unbelievable. I am deeply saddened. My condolences to his family. Choirul Huda, RIP brother,” said Odemwingie

Nigeria Can Lift 2018 World Cup, says CAF President

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ahmad Ahmad is hopeful that Nigeria makes history in next year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia by surpassing their previous records in the global mundial.

The CAF President who was recently in Nigeria for a football stakeholder forum described Nigeria as the strongest African contender tipped to lift the World Cup in July next year.

FIFA placed Nigeria as 5th best African football nation in its current ranking, this, Ahmad disagree with stating that Nigeria will lead an upset from the continent at the football fiesta.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are currently behind Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal and Congo DR, although they moved three places in the global ratings from 44 to 41st in the world.

“Nigeria is the strongest team from Africa going to the World Cup, hence much is expected of the Super Eagles in Russia next year.

“No doubt, going to Russia and we expect so much from the Super Eagles and Amaju Pinnick ( President, Nigeria Football Federation) has been spot-on in at least two major decisions this year: to support the change at CAF and to get the Nigerian fraternity to work assiduously towards Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

And the effort has to be doubled to make Africa proud. I know Nigeria is up to the task of making Africa proud at the tournament,” he said.

Nigeria’s participation in Russia 2018 will be a record of sixth appearance of the last seven FIFA World Cups. Since the first World Cup appearance in USA’94 where they reached the second round they have only missed the Germany 2006 FIFA World Cup and reached the round of 16 three times.

Ighalo on rampage grabs brace in club victory

Barely a week after helping Nigeria earn a ticket to the World Cup in Russia, Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo has taken the party mood to China, scoring two goals in his club’s victory over Guizhou Zhicheng.

The tie which ended 2-3 in favour of visiting Changchun Yatai at the Guiyang Olympic Sports Center saw business minded Ighalo shoot his side into the lead in the 50th minute of the match after enjoying an assist from teammate Sun Jie

Yu Rui increased the tally for the visitors in the 82nd minute further boxing the hosts into a tight corner.  As if that were not enough, Ighalo again found the net in the first minute of extra time.

Hosts Guizhou Zhicheng were able to reduce the tally in the 90th minute through Han Pengfei with a second goal coming just before the final whistle thanks to Croatian import Nikica Jelavić.

The match was however not without incident as Ighalo’s goalkeeper Yi Fan was handed the marching orders in the 74th minute.

Though Ighalo and his teammates were only able to maintain a 45% possession they nonetheless made good use of it running away with the three vital points at stake.

Changchun Yatai  are yet to lose a game  in the last six matches. Just before the break for the world cup qualifiers Ighalo also grabbed a goal in the 1-5 demotion of Tiajin Teda which incidentally had compatriot and Captain John Obi Mikel in action.

Mikel who proved to be a good ginger as Eagles claimed World Cup ticket at the expense of Zambia October 7 in Uyo, is expected to return to club action on Sunday when Tiajin Teda visit Shanghai Shenhua. The clash will see him face compatriot Obafemi Martins who is likely to be in action for the homers.

  • Eagles… How to do well in Russia

Eagles… How to do well in Russia

Last Saturday, the Super Eagles qualified for its sixth World Cup after a 1-0 win over Zambia in Uyo to become one of the 23 teams that have booked their place at the soccer fiesta in Russia next year. In this piece, ADEYINKA ADEDIPE takes a look at the road to qualification and what the authorities need to do to ensure that the team does better at the World Cup.

The celebration that greeted Nigeria’s qualification for the Russia 2018 World Cup (the sixth time) reverberated all around the country. Fans relished the performance of the Super Eagles against a resolute Chipolopolo of Zambia who were in Uyo to scuttle or delay Nigeria’s passage to Russia. The match will, no doubt, go down as the most difficult in the qualifying series for the Eagles who had to dig deep into their arsenal for the hard-earned victory. It was clear that the Zambians came to Nigeria with a strong conviction that they could upset the Nigerian team at its backyard.

They hassled the Eagles throughout the game and even had a goal disallowed for offside before Alex Iwobi finally scored the decisive goal in the second half. The ‘patient’ fans, who had stood by the Eagles all through the game singing and chanting the names of their heroes, rose in unison to begin the party. They had so much belief in the team and never gave the Zambians any chance of levelling the scores even when they threatened. Inspirational forward Victor Moses had the opportunity to put the result beyond doubt, but he missed a glorious chance in the dying minutes of the games.

Against the Zambians, the trademark pressing game of the Eagles was lacking as they failed to string passes together, but they made up for that deficiency with their physical presence and ensured that the Zambians were thwarted each time they had a goal scoring chance. The game was a nervy one for the Eagles who knew that a win was what they needed to take them to the ‘promise land’. The Zambians, on the othehand, were also aware that upsetting the Eagles would be put them in good stead for qualification. The Eagles inability to put passes together could also be attributed to the bumpy nature of the pitch.

Like the biblical Israelites who went through thick and thin to get to Canaan, the Eagles waded through the Zambians hurdle and eventually made it to the promise land. Just like Canaan flowed with milk and honey, Russia surely flows with good football artistry as top class players converge for the biggest football show from June 14 to July 15.

The beautiful scenes that heralded the vital win were breathtaking. Players threw Coach Gernot Rohr and boss of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick into the air, while they also went close to the stands to applaud the fans that have stood by them this far. Some went on their knees in prayers to thank God for the achievement; others simply danced before exiting the pitch.

No one would have thought that the Eagles would be home and dry after five games when the draws were made pitching Nigeria against reigning Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) champions, Cameroun and past winners, Algeria and Zambia. The group was labelled the proverbial group of death with many predicting that the fight for the sole ticket would go down to the wire. The four teams have strong pedigree in African football with Zambia the only team yet to play at the World Cup.

Despite winning three and drawing one after four games, including an opening day away win over Zambia in Ndola, Coach Rohr knew his ward were in for a torrid time in the reverse fixtures in Uyo. The Zambians had just recoded two victories against the Algeria national team, which boosted their morale before the game in Uyo. They knew they had nothing to lose but everything to gain if they beat the Eagles.

And Rohr was desperate to have his stars in camp early so he could put forward his match plan to them. He had admitted that the Zambians were tough customers and that the Eagles needed to be at their best to win. Though the game was very tough, the Nigerian side did what they had to do to nip victory.

After the victory in Ndola, the Eagles followed it up with a 3-1 win over Algeria, while the Camerounians also fell 0-4 to the Eagles in Uyo. After a 1-1 draw in Cameroon on match day four and amassing 10 points in the process, it was clear that the Eagles were on their way to Russia and only the Nigeria team could truncate its ambition of playing in Russia. However, the Eagles stuck to the plan by grinding out a 1-0 win over Zambia last Saturday to berth in Russia despite having an away game left against Algeria.

Pundits have suggested that the home-based Eagles should be allowed to play the’ inconsequential’ game in Algiers, but Rohr has insisted that the foreign-based stars would be used to prosecute the game as he continues to rebuild the Eagles into a world and worthy brand once again. Also, the Eagles performance in the qualifiers should boost Nigeria’s rating in the monthly FIFA ranking hence the need to approach the game against Algeria with upmost importance.

Rohr said he is not carried away by their qualification for the World Cup, describing the game against the Chipolopolo as difficult. “I must admit that it was a very difficult game for the Eagles. We didn’t underrate this team because we saw on video what they did to Algeria and Cameroon.”

“We knew it would be a very tough game and they gave us a chase. We didn’t want to concede a goal and we were lucky to get the goal which took us to Russia.Starting with Simon Moses and bringing in Alex Iwobi was not easy for us, but that made the difference.

“In five games, we have four victories and one draw – a result I didn’t believe because of the teams in this group. It is not finished because the most difficult will be to prepare for a good outing at the World Cup.”

Expectedly, congratulatory message poured in after the win. President Muhammadu Buhari through his spokesman, Femi Adesina, described the hard-earned victory as “very sweet, soothing and a 57th Independence Anniversary gift to the nation.” He applauded the Eagles for the feat of making Nigeria the first African country to qualify for Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament.

Buhari called on all Nigerians to apply the values of perseverance, resilience, discipline, hard work and team-spirit which propelled the footballers to excel since the beginning of the qualifying matches, to all sectors of national life.

He promised that the Federal Government would continue to support the team within available resources so that the nation would maximise the unifying potentials of sports in general and football in particular. He enjoined the entire team and Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) officials to remain steadfast and focused when they begin preparations for the global football fiesta in order to make Nigeria proud.

The President urged public, private organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to continue to assist the Super Eagles as the team heads for a sixth appearance at the summit of football competition. He also appreciated the government of Akwa Ibom State for the invaluable support it has been rendering to the football team, describing it as worthy of emulation.

With Eight months to the World Cup, it is clear that there is more work to be done than before the qualifier started. It is a welcome development that the coach has said he was not carried away by the feat of the Eagles. So, he will have to monitor the progress of his players at their different clubs, while also hoping that they stay injury-free and stay in top form for the fiesta. The NFF should take advantage of the international window to organise top friendly games for the Eagles. With proper planning it will not be difficult to get quality friendlies considering that the Eagles have qualified for the World Cup.

With everything in place, the Eagles should surpass their second round finish at the World Cup.

For us in NSA, we are most excited about the piece of news. We believe achievement such as this is a clear testimony to the improvement being witnessed in football and other sports in general. We believe it can only get better as we have seen in some other sports. I think commendations should go to all the players for giving everything to earn this most coveted ticket. We must commend the team, the coaching crew for putting up a gallant fight to secure the ticket. They truly deserve all the accolades. If you follow the last few matches, you would notice the level of consistency and skillful display by the national team. The victories over other arch rivals in the group alone are pointers that Nigeria has what it takes to beat any team if there is unity of purpose and drive to succeed. By this feat, it has shown that Nigeria football and sports in general can still get back to its rightful place that we were known for.

While applauding the role of the management of the Nigerian Football Federation and Federal Ministry of Sport on the Super Eagle sterling performance, he tasked them to support the team by starting preparation in earnest  to avoid a repeat of our last outing at the World cup.

According to him, with quality friendlies and adequate training, Nigeria has what it takes to surprise the world Cup by being the first African country to win the Cup

He said’ I need to state that we cannot afford to go to sleep now that we have secured the ticket. This is the time to begin preparation for the World cup if we are really concerned about putting upa good showing or winning the World Cup at best.

The management of the award however advised the table tennis federation to lend their support to the tennis sensation as World Cup draws near noting that Quadri needs all the backing to perform excellently.
