  • Delta bullion van accident: Police fail to arraign suspects

The Ovwian Division of the Delta State Police Command yesterday failed to arraign the three suspects in the bullion van accident in which a woman, Mrs Onome Akporode, was knocked down last Monday.

The accident occurred on Udu Road in Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area.

The case was scheduled for hearing at the Otor-Udu Magistrate’s Court but it was adjourned till August 4, following the failure of the police to conclude investigations on the matter.

Although the prosecutor declined to comment on the development, investigation by our reporter showed that the three suspects are: Tare Onome Joseph, Edozie Gabriel and Godwin Odobare.

A source, who spoke in confidence for security reasons, said the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), on completing its investigations, would be in a better position to say whether or not Odobare was an accomplice in the case.

The source said: “The VIO has not inspected the vehicles involved in the accident and the Ovwian Divisional Police Officer (DPO) failed to do the needful, which is a proper investigation on the case, before taking the suspects to court.

“When the commissioner of police called him in the morning (yesterday), he said he was yet to do so and having been ordered to conclude investigation on the matter.”

  • How we killed ex- FUTA VC , by suspects

How we killed ex- FUTA VC , by suspects

The suspected killers of the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Albert Ilemobade, yesterday narrated how they strangled him to death.

The suspects, who were his domestic workers Daniel Ita (guard) from Cross River State and his sacked driver, Olayemi Bamitale from Ekiti State, as well as the late Ilemobade’s red Toyota Rav 4, were paraded by the police in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The duo were arrested by the police in Ogun State before they were transferred to Ondo State.

Family members, members of the Archbishop Vining College of Theology, Akure, where the deceased was a member and representatives of Imade College, Owo Old Students Association, led by Yinka Akinola, besieged the police headquarters yesterday.

They were there to catch a glimpse of the two suspects, who killed the 78-year-old man.

Last Monday, it was reported that the don was abducted by unknown gunmen. His decomposing remains were discovered at an isolated store in his house on Sunday.

Bamitale (36) was said to have been sacked in April when he allegedly stole the deceased’s Toyota RAV4.  It was gathered that the vehicle was with him for four days before he returned it, when he could not get a buyer.

Bamitale was said to have been detained by the police before sympathisers appealed to the deceased to allow his bail.

It was gathered that despite his sack, the suspect was always in contact with Daniel on how they would steal the car.

He said: “Baba was nice to Daniel and me. Daniel called me one day and said he had contacted his herbalist on how to steal the car without any trouble.

“Daniel asked me to come to the House at Ijapo Estate on Sunday by 9pm. When I got to the place, he told me that he had met his herbalist who told him that if we want to take the car we must kill Baba and take some sand from the house so that there won’t be any problem.

“I asked him how we are going to lure Prof outside. Daniel said he would lure Baba to the security room and from there we will strangle him to death. And from there we will go to his room and take whatever we want since Mama, his wife, is in another room.

“He went to Baba’s sitting room and called him, that there was a power surge. Baba passed through the kitchen to the security room. It was there that we grabbed his neck, until he stopped breathing.

“We took his body to a store beside the car park. We put a picture on his chest so that if the body is found, they will think that his murderers dropped the picture.

“When we entered his room, we took the car key, N7000, laptop and two phones. Daniel locked the gate from outside and we went away with the vehicle.

“At the estate gate, the guards allowed us to go when they saw Daniel and that was around 11pm.

“We slept at Alagbaka because Daniel’s brother, who lived at Arakale in Akure, refused to pick up his phone. The following morning, Daniel asked us to take the car to Calabar but I told him that the N7,000 with us is not enough to buy fuel to take us to Calabar.

“We agreed to take the vehicle to Lagos. But when I explained the circumstances to my contacts in Lagos, they all said they couldn’t buy it.

“ On our way, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) detained us for incomplete documents.

“They took the car to a nearby police station where we were directed to pay N3000 at First Bank. There was no money on us again. The following day, we took the laptop and two phones to Epe to sell.

“When we moved round, we were told that the phones have security codes and unless we flash them, we couldn’t sell them. But we were told of the dangers of flashing the phones.

“Daniel saw one of his kinsmen, who agreed to buy the phones and he gave us N3000. I went to the bank to pay the money and we took the teller to the FRSC office. We were given a letter which we took to the police station and they released the car to us.

“We returned to Ijebu-Ode and the person I contacted at Ilotin in Ijebu-Ode reported us to the police and we were arrested.”

But Daniel blamed Bamitale for luring him to the evil business. The guard said the herbalist was treating him for hernia and that the don gave him N5000 recently for the treatment.

Commissioner of Police Isaac Eke said they received information from the Ogun State Police Command that the late Ilemobade’s guard and former driver had been arrested with the deceased’s vehicle.

Eke described the incident as traumatic and sad, noting that because the suspects dropped the don’s slippers and watch,  the police and family believed that he was kidnapped.

“I want to appeal to people to always carry out background  checks before employing domestic workers,” Eke said.

  • ‘Suspects in Odimodi crisis not oil thieves’

‘Suspects in Odimodi crisis not oil thieves’

The youths of Odimodi community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State have exonerated two of their kinsmen who were arrested for alleged oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The suspects were arrested a fortnight ago by another group of youths and handed over to security operatives for alleged bunkering.

But President of the community’s youths’ body, Ebi Iseru, said the suspects were not oil thieves but participants in a civil disturbance.

He was reacting Monday’s report in The Nation.

Iseru, who spoke with our reporter on Tuesday, said: “They are not illegal ‘bunkerers’. They are just victims of the leadership tussle in the community. The leadership of Odimodi is doing everything to resolve the issues amicably.

“It is true that we are making efforts to release the boys, but it is not true that money is being offered to security operatives for their release because they have not done anything like that…”

It is certainly not true that anybody is inducing the navy with N250,000.”

Iseru, who was accompanied by Akin Disi, a student leader, also denied that there was pressure from ex-militant to release the suspects, maintaining that “I am the one running around to secure their release because I know them and I can vouch that they are innocent of the allegation.

“As we are talking they have been taken everywhere in the course of the investigation and there is no proof that they commit the crime being alleged,” he added.

He regretted the internal wrangling in the community. He lamented that the internal strife had opened up the once United Odimodi to crisis and strife.

  • Unease in Delta community over plan to release bunkering suspects

The Nigerian Navy, NNS Delta, at the Warri Naval Base in Delta State, is under pressure to release two suspected pipeline vandals arrested by youths of Odimodi community in Burutu Local Government Area about two weeks ago, it has been learnt.

The suspects were arrested by vigilantes when the management of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) reported a drop in the pressure from its export trunk line to leaders of the Ijaw host community.

The vigilantes deployed by the community fought members of a three-man gang at the trunk line and overpowered them.

Two of the suspects were arrested and handed over to the Navy at the Forcados Terminal of the SPDC.

A community leader, who spoke in confidence, told our correspondent: “The boys were moved to Warri. But we heard that the Commanding Officer of NNS Delta has bowed to pressure to release them. The plan to release the two suspects was thwarted by some top members of SPDC, who became suspicious.

“They were then moved to Warri Base. That is where they are planning to release the boys because of the influence of some persons in the matter.”

When our correspondent contacted NNS Delta’s Information Officer, Commodore Tope Ogunaike, he denied the report.

The spokesman said the suspects were still in custody at the base.

It was learnt that some naval officials at the base were being induced to free the suspects.

A source close to the deal said a N250,000 “bail” was agreed upon, following the alleged involvement of an influential former militant leader.

Although no official of SPDC was willing to comment on the report, it was learnt that some management workers of the multinational firm were uncomfortable with the development.

An official, who spoke in confidence, noted that the arrest was a breakthrough by some leaders of the community.

He said the community believed that the suspects and their fleeing counterpart could provide an insight into the incessant breaches of the company’s facility.

“We and genuine leaders of Odimodi feel that those arrested, if properly quizzed, could open up on their masters and ring leaders of the attacks on our facilities, especially the 48-inch Single Buoy Morring (SBM) export line.

“Besides, those in the community, who stuck out their necks to arrest these persons, may become targets. Their lives will be in danger, if they are released without proper investigation,” the source added.

Adejobi said: “The suspect had a quarrel with the baby’s mother some times ago, and had vowed via a written letter to deal with her.

The bodies were paraded at the state police command headquarters on Iyin Road before they were conveyed to the mortuary.

The suspects, who were four in a car, were stopped by SARS men for a search but they reportedly opened fire on the policemen.

Two of them fled into the bush; the remaining two continued to engage the policemen in a gun duel.

One of the deceased, whose name was given as Ojo Sunday, allegedly specialised in attacking heavy duty vehicles.

He was said to have killed a trailer driver recently and has been on the police’s wanted list.

Police spokesman Alberto Adeyemi said Sunday escaped from police custody last year.
