The police in Ogun State have arrested two teenagers – Rachael John and Joy Atunramu- for allegedly stealing a nine-month old baby from his mother’s shop in Ijebu-Ode.
John (14) and Atunramu (nine) reportedly took the baby to Ogbere, where they contacted the victim’s family and demanded N2 million.
It was gathered that police detectives traced them to Ogbere, where they were arrested.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the baby had been rescued. He added that one of the suspects had a squabble with the victim’s mother.
Adejobi said: “The suspect had a quarrel with the baby’s mother some times ago, and had vowed via a written letter to deal with her.
“Though, the mother did not know who actually stole the baby, but neighbors and some eyewitnesses, said they saw the baby being taken away by Atunramu on the instruction of the prime suspect (John). They alerted the mother and police detectives.
“The Commissioner of Police, Val Ntomchukwu, has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated. The prime suspect has been transferred to the Police Headquarters, Eleweran, to assist the police in their investigation.”
