200 Lagos teachers trained on child protection

A total of 200 public school teachers in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos have been trained on how to protect children against sexual abuse.

The training on Tuesday at Government College School, Iyana Ipaja, was organised by Cece Yara Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that supports children who have been sexually abused or  at risk.

A participant, Mrs Ajibare Titilope, described the training as very useful.

“It will help me a lot. We teachers need to stand up to the task. We need to help our students, and how do we go about helping them?  One of the things which I have known for long, and which is part of me is that  you must be approachable.

“As a teacher, students must be able to come to you and say  please, this is what I’m going to through, this is what I’m feeling. I will call it a ministry that I have found myself.”

The training was also commended by the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Agege Branch, Comrade.Ojedokun Ahmed Bolaji.

He said: “I think this programme is a step in the right direction.

I have had instances where one or two girls complained that they were being molested basically at home. When such report comes to us, based on the protocol that has been  laid down by the government of the state, who in their wisdom have placed social workers and counsellors in  different schools, it is always our duty to officially report such incidences to the school counsellors, who is expected to carry out some therapeutic and remedial actions on the victim before he or she also translates the information  to the appropriate social worker handling the education district. It is a thing of joy that the Lagos state government frowns seriously at cases of sexual molestation of students.”

Chief Executive Officer of Cece Yara, Mrs Bisi Ajayi Kayode, said “what we are implementing today  is research-based and evidence-informed. It  is to inculcate the best practices of preventing and responding to child sexual abuse to educators.  At Cece Yara and globally speaking, we know it is the  responsibility of adults to protect and to save children.

“Children by virtue of their physical and cognitive abilities cannot prevent or respond to child sexual abuse. Statistics has shown that 20% of child sexual abuse cases occur in schools with  90% of the perpetrators being family members, which makes it difficult for children to report or to make disclosures.  That’s why you see that when it’s happening at home, the children come to school and confide in their teachers.

She added that: “Some children are even too scared because they’ve been threatened, they’ve been frustrated,  they’ve been coerced and intimidated from reporting. The teachers need to know the five basic steps of knowing the fact, what is child sexual abuse,  contractual or non-contactual. It can happen on site, it can happen online, like you have child pornography, sextortions, cybercrime  bullying and all that.

“Then you need to minimise the opportunity for each to occur because it’s our guiding policy at Cece Yara not to leave any child behind, either physically or digitally.

“We need to create an opportunity to talk about a sex education.  We are here to demystify the mystery behind child sexual abuse.”

EU extends 45.4m Euros teachers’ scheme to six more states

The European Union (EU) yesterday launched the second phase of its education programme – ‘Expand, Integrate and Strengthen Systems (EISS)’, to build the capacity of teachers in Nigeria.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms Samuela Isopi, who spoke at the launch in Abuja, explained that the second phase, which focuses on teachers, complements the first phase, Education and Youth Empowerment in the North West, launched in 2023.

According to her, funding for both phases amounted to 45.4 million Euros under the Global Gateway Strategy to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors. Ms. Isopi, represented by EU’s Head of Human Development, Leila Ben Amor Mathieu, hinted that the EU, under EISS, would partner six training colleges in Adamawa, Bayelsa, Enugu, Katsina, Plateau and Oyo states. Each benefitting state is expected to in turn reach out to a wider pool of teachers.

“Investing in teachers is investing in our collective future. All over the world they play an essential role in shaping the minds and hearts of the next generation.

“However, in many countries, and in Nigeria in particular, teachers face numerous challenges, ranging from insufficient resources to the pressures of adapting to rapidly changing educational environments. Recognising these challenges, the European Union has identified with the government the critical need to support Nigerian teachers in their professional development and personal resilience.

“By empowering teachers, we are not only enhancing the quality of education, but also ensuring that students receive the guidance and support they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

  • A decade of excellence in teachers’ recognition

A decade of excellence in teachers’ recognition

Every year, teachers across the country look forward to the honour and recognition from the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, which serves as a veritable platform for inspiring and rewarding them as moulders of tomorrow’s leaders. It has continued to leave indelible imprints over the last 10 years, DAMOLA KOLA-DARE reports.

IN a clime where teachers hardly get the reward and recognition they deserve, the advent of the Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOTY) in 2015, as a national competition that identifies, honours and rewards outstanding teachers in Nigeria, has changed the narrative with educators now getting their rewards right here on earth. This is contrary to the popular saying, “a teacher’s reward is in heaven”.

The competition received the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Education and other education stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS), and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

With its total cash prize in millions of naira, and all-expense paid capacity development training abroad, a fully equipped computer laboratory or a six-classroom block worth N20 million for the winner’s school, the initiative has proved significantly to be worthwhile, just as it motivates teachers to undertake impactful projects.

Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, who was a special guest at the 2022 edition, praised the organisers for recognising and celebrating teachers, noting that the achievements recorded by previous award recipients reflected the significance and impact of the competition.

“The teacher must be appreciated. Everyone needs affirmation and encouragement, as it can only lead to greater achievements. And this is why I think that the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award is an incredible boost for teachers and the teaching profession,” he said.

Little wonder, every year the organisers receive a deluge of entries as teachers nationwide jostle for recognition and honour from this prestigious platform. Thus, the popularity and significance of the competition continue to reverberate across the nation with last year’s edition recording its highest number of entries ever – 1,499 entries nationwide, while 1,203 valid entries were received for grading.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, commended the efforts of the organisers to celebrate outstanding teachers while highlighting the growing national efforts to bring back the glory days of teachers in the country. He noted that no education reform can take place without teachers.

Similarly, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, who represented Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hailed Nigerian Breweries Plc for the significant contributions towards making the teaching profession an enviable one, adding that the state government appreciates the significance of such competition in improving the quality of teaching and students’ performance.

With an unwavering commitment to motivating teachers and improving the profession, the organisers fulfilled their promise, and recently sponsored five past winners of the competition to Tampere, Finland, for capacity development training. The past winners including, Olasunkanmi Opeifa, Olubunmi Anani, Abanika Taiye, Alaku Ayiwulu and Adeola Adefemi were involved.

The capacity development training, which was held between Monday, May 20, 2024, and Thursday, May 30, 2024, is part of the prize for the competition winners. The teachers were taken through different modules of practical-based teaching skills.

Chairman, Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, Mr. Hans Essaadi, explained that the training was organised to expose the teachers to modern teaching methods that are productive and positively impactful to society at large.

Essaadi stated that the programme is designed to maximise the capacity of the teachers to enable them to deliver effectively in a way that would impact and improve the performance of students.

The past winners of the competition expressed profound gratitude to the management of the Fund for making the opportunity a reality. They described the experience as an eye-opener, which has further enhanced their skills not only in teaching but also in leadership.

The 2023 winner of the competition, Adeola Adefemi, noted that the training has been comprehensive and fulfilling with a pledge to deploy her experience for the transformation of the future of education in the country.Alaku Ayiwulu, the 2022 winner praised the capacity-building training as a truly transformative exercise that offered him firsthand experience on different approaches to learning as well as the significance of student-centered collaboration.

Taiye Abanika, the 2021 winner, described the experience as one that creates a conscious and consistent practice of collaborative and cooperative learning.

The Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund’s investment in many educational projects across the country since it was founded in 1994, underlines its dedication to providing a strong platform to support schools, students, and teachers towards advancing quality education at all levels in the nation.

The fund has constructed learning facilities in communities, awarded scholarships to doctorate students, created an endowment at the University of Ibadan College Medicine, and funded the building of the Felix Ohiwerei School of Science and Technology at the Pan-Atlantic University Lagos.

Since inception, the initiative has produced nine grand winners, Rose Nkemdilim Obi, Anambra (2015), Imoh Essien, Akwa Ibom (2016), Felix Ariguzo, Delta State (2017), Olasunkanmi Opeifa, FCT (2018), Ezem Collins (2019), Oluwabunmi Anani(2020), Abanika Taiye, Delta State (2021), Alaku Ayiwulu, Plateau (2022), Adeola  Adefemi, Lagos (2023). The 2024 edition is ongoing as the search is on for the 10th Maltina Teacher of the Year. This year, the cash reward has grown bigger as the overall winner will receive a total prize money of N10 million; the first and second runner-ups will be rewarded with N3 million and N2.5 million respectively, while all state champions will go home with N1 million each.

  • Celebrating teachers, reimagining education in Nigeria

Celebrating teachers, reimagining education in Nigeria

    By Abike Sanusi

Yearly, on World Teacher’s Day, World Teacher’s Dayteachers who give us the fundamental skills on which our future rests are celebrated. In  a country like Nigeria, which is a country filled with educational tributes, there’s a need to reawaken the passion for impacting knowledge in the teaching career.

    The passion for play-based learning

Mrs Omotola Lawson, the founder of Delightful Toyshop – Nigeria’s first toy-focused shop, is a teacher by training. According to her, there was a time when teachers were seen as the builders of young minds, not just by the word of knowledge. There was joy in learning, a spark that lightened curiosity.

She said her experience  in the classroom and business gave her a special idea. According to her, Delightful Toyshop, reflects the direct power of play in sparking a child’s imagination. This helps them to explore, experiment and learn at their convenience. Unfortunately, the education system of Nigeria neglects this crucial aspect .

Beyond the paper: Reviving  the teaching spirit

The Nigerian education system has gone a long way, but challenges remain, such as rigid curriculum, limited infrastructure, and large class sizes. These problems can kill the creativity and passion of teachers

She noted that  teachers need support; imagine an artist doesn’t have proper tools. This is the reality of Nigerian teachers. They should be given resources and trained to encourage a compelling learning environment.

How to bring back the spark in the Nigerian educational system

Teachers should be trained on children’s behavioural activities, such as mental, emotional, and physical activities, classroom administration, and teaching procedures. They must be trained on how to be creative and should be allowed to have practical and a sense of ownership of their teaching plans

There should be innovative learning materials, educational technology and a well-equipped environment for learning. Interactive games and toys can help achieve active learning.

It is also important to redesign the curriculum to provide innovative methods in education. For instance, it can be restructured to foster problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking. Some other engaging methods, like elements of play,  project-based learning and real-world applications, should be included in the curriculum.

Recognising the hard work of teachers as they are the backbone of the education system is very important. This honour should be done publicly and within their schools to boost their energy and attract more people to the career.

There was a time when teachers were well respected, and it is important to celebrate, honour, and invest in them. Provide tools needed to make learning an impactful one for the children.

By collaborating with parents, teachers, policymakers, and the private sector, it is possible to have an education system that caters to children’s growth and imbibes the spirit of learning. On World Teachers Day, we should be committed to inspiring Nigerian teachers to teach and impact because they are the key to unlocking our future potential.

  • Oyo to recruit 7,000 public primary school teachers, 100 caregivers for special schools

Oyo to recruit 7,000 public primary school teachers, 100 caregivers for special schools

Oyo State is set to recruit 7,000 teachers for public primary schools and 100 caregivers for special schools across the state.

The executive chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Nureni Adeniran disclosed this during a press conference held at the Board Room on Friday.

He said the press conference became imperative to foreclose any possibility of misinformation, baseless rumours, and outright falsehood by people who might want to scam unsuspecting members of the public.

He said the government has not appointed any agent or agency to carry out the recruitment process but will make information available to the members of the public as soon as the recruitment begins.

Adeniran, who was flanked by the top management staff of the Board during the conference said the governor, Seyi Makinde approved the recruitment in fulfillment of his campaign promises and to bridge the teachers’ deficit in the system.

He added that for the 7,000 fresh teachers to be engaged by the government, at least 75 percent deficit of the gap will be plugged.

Adeniran said: “For so many months or years back, there has been a clamour for recruitment of teachers into public primary school, and as an agency, under whose purview we have these primary schools, a lot of requests, a lot of questions have been asked of us, and we have been saying, we are going to do it.

“Ahead of the last general election, a lot of questions were asked about this recruitment, and His Excellency, the governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde did promise that we are indeed going to recruit.

“So it is my pleasure to announce to the world that His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde, in fulfillment of his electoral promise, and response to the yearnings of the good people of Oyo State, occasioned by the dearth of teachers in our public primary schools, has graciously approved the recruitment of 7,000 teachers in our public primary schools.

“In addition, he also approved the recruitment of 100 caregivers in our special schools in the state.

“This recruitment, the process of which will commence very soon, needs to be brought into the hearing of the good people of Oyo State, especially the intending applicants, and this press conference becomes imperative because of various information that has dominated the media space in the last couple of months, or even years, wherein some scammers would go online and say, Oyo SUBEB is recruiting.

“I can say that we have denied that several times, over and over and over again, and your guess is as good as mine. Those who could do that, even when the approval has not been given, now knowing that the approval has been given, want to utilize the opportunity to scam the unsuspecting members of the public who are intending applicants for this particular exercise.

“So, I am coming out on behalf of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board to say that the approval has been given and we are already commencing the preliminary work on the stages of this recruitment exercise, which will also be made public at the appropriate time.”

He said further: “The essence of this press conference is to warn the unsuspecting intending applicants to be wary of scammers and to let them know that in the process of this recruitment exercise, the details of which will be brought out later, Oyo State government and Oyo SUBEB is not appointing anybody to serve as agents in this recruitment exercise.

“Therefore, whatever the stages that will be followed to get this exercise conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner, will be emanating from this office under the signature of the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

“We also want to let the people know that if there is anything, even after we might have brought out the template on the stages or the procedures to be followed if there is anything or information required, people should not hesitate to come into the SUBEB headquarters to come and find out by themselves, and not rely on a second-hand or already midwife information that may not be true.

“I also want to say that no person has been empowered to collect a dime from anybody on account of this recruitment exercise. No person, whether staff or non-staff members, has been empowered to collect a dime from anybody on account of this recruitment.

“We want to use this opportunity to thank His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde for living up to his words as he promised that this recruitment would be done, and he has thus fulfilled that particular promise.

“I want to say that at the next stage of the recruitment, we’ll let the world know how we want to go about it in terms of how the intending applicant will be able to put in their application, what the requirements needed, and where and when to do what would be made available at the appropriate time.

“But I want to say that every information regarding this particular recruitment exercise will be from us, the Head of Service as well as the Civil Service Commission. So these are the agencies and the MDAs that we will be working together to ensure a seamless process.”
