    I paved the way for smoking cannabis onscreen — Terry G

    Nigerian singer Terry G has stirred controversy after claiming he pioneered the boldness Nigerian artistes now display in smoking cannabis on screen.

    In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the eccentric artiste said his personal “sacrifice” made it easier for today’s musicians to openly use cannabis in music videos.

    He wrote: “No hard feelings, it’s all love, but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen.”

    Terry G, born Gabriel Oche Amanyi, is known for his unconventional style and energetic music, blending Afrobeat, Highlife, and Hip-Hop.

    However, his claim has drawn mixed reactions, with fans and critics pointing out that legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was publicly known for smoking marijuana both onstage and on screen long before Terry G’s emergence.

    Musician Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G has warned against comparisons with controversial artist Portable.

    In his tweet on X, Terry G described the comparison as disrespectful, emphasising his consistency and enduring musical legacy.

    He pointed out that his music remains popular and relevant over a decade later, setting him apart from Portable. 

    He wrote: “Comparing me to Portable is disrespectful because I actually have music people listen to 10 years later.”

    Known for his eclectic and provocative style, Terry G gained popularity with hits like “Akpako” and “Free Madness.”

    Terry G’s music often blends elements of Afrobeats, dancehall, and street-hop, and he has been a polarising figure in the Nigerian music scene due to his lyrics and public persona.

    His music, which combined Galala music with White Garment elements and Hip Hop, carried an eccentricity many fans find in Portable’s music and fashion sense.

    The duo has also collaborated in the past. Portable featured Terry G on his song ‘Ogbafia’ and both appeared on C Prince’s ‘Koba.’

    Wizkid lawyers demanded I take down our collab song ‘Mary Jane’ – Terry G

    Singer Terry G has claimed he received a request from Wizkid’s legal team to remove their collaborative song, “Mary Jane” from digital streaming platforms.

    In an interview on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Adesope, Terry G admitted that he failed to obtain the necessary clearance from Wizkid’s team before releasing the song, which was recorded years ago.

    He acknowledged his approach was informal, stating that in his era, collaborations were based on mutual respect and love.

    However, he said he has since complied with the request and removed the song from some platforms with plans to take it down from the remaining ones soon. 

    “I didn’t clear the song I made with Wizkid [‘Mary Jane’] because, in my era, we don’t clear songs; we do collaborations based on love. The lawyers have reached out to me to take the song down.

    “To be honest, we’ve got to be professional and do paperwork. Because if that doesn’t work, nothing will work. So trust me, I have pulled down the song. For the platforms that are yet to take it down, I will make sure it is taken down on those platforms, too, soon,” he said

    Afrobeat singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G has shared concerns about the alleged prevalence of cultism in the music industry.

    He lamented the industry’s unity is being undermined by the influence of cults and fraternities.

    According to Terry G, this trend is discouraging some musicians from pursuing their craft, as they feel pressured to join cults to advance their careers.

    To further lessen the pressure, he advocated reduction in cultism’s influence to foster a more harmonious and supportive music industry.

    According to him: “In my time, cultism used to be in the universities. But it has entered into the music industry now. If we can remove it from the music industry, we would be [one] family again.

    “But if there’s frat [confraternity] in the music industry, people like us who are not cultists cannot operate anymore.

    “When we held sway, there were people doing cultism but it wasn’t violent. It was about love. They said it was for solidarity purposes.

    “But now, I can see the same family fighting among themselves. So that’s just the major problem of the Nigerian music industry. A lot of musicians are even scared to do music. They want to do cult before they do music now because that would pave way for them than the music. Let’s try and reduce the rate of cultism in the music industry.”

    Singer Terry G has showered accolades on colleague Wizkid, drawing parallels between him and the iconic American hip-hop artist Jay-Z.

    He emphatically declared Wizkid as the Nigerian counterpart of Jay-Z, acknowledging his remarkable achievements and profound influence on the music industry.

    Terry G also shared a memorable experience, recounting the time Wizkid visited his residence in Ishaga in 2016 for a recording session, resulting in the creation of four collaborative tracks.

    He expressed deep admiration for Wizkid’s humility, work ethics and dedication to his craft, further solidifying his position as a trailblazer in the Nigerian music scene.

    Featuring in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, Terry G expressly said: “Wizkid is the Jay-Z of his generation. He’s the first [born child of the new generation of Nigerian musicians] and we’ll always give it to him. One thing I like about Wizkid is his carriage. He has inspired a lot of people.

    “Wizkid came to my house in Ishaga in 2016 to record a song with me. I was very happy he came. We recorded 4 songs together. God bless Wizkid,” Terry G added.

    Singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, revealed that he doesn’t have friends not just in the music industry but throughout his whole life.

    Terry G stated that he doesn’t have a strong bond with his fellow musicians, attributing it to his personality trait as a loner.

    In a recent episode of ‘The Honest Bunch Podcast’ Terry G shared that he has never had friends.

    He stated that he spends most of his days in the studio, collaborating with business colleagues rather than forming personal connections.

    He revealed that his child is the only true friend he has, while Everyone else is part of a business transaction.

    Terry G acknowledged his past closeness with his colleague Timaya, revealing that they have since grown apart.

    According to him: “I have never had friends, not just in the music industry but my entire life. I am a loner.

    “I spend my time at the studio. I usually have business colleagues, people who do business with me. I don’t play.

    “To be honest, I think my child is my only friend. Any other person close to me, it is just business.

    “There are some of my colleagues like Timaya who used to be close to me but we are not close anymore. And nothing happened. We just grew apart.

    “We do phone each other but phone conversation is different from physical relationship. Although we always exchange pleasantries whenever we run into each other.

    “My relationship with Illbliss is very cool, we had issues back then but we later settled.”

    Terry G said: “S3x is part of music. So you can’t take s3x out of it. It will be empty. Females are the base of the music.

    Singer Terry G has asserted that the self-acclaimed ‘African Giant’ Burna Boy is a bigger artist than Wizkid and Davido.

    According to the ‘Akpako Master’, Davido is the only “king” in Africa.

    He added that Africans can’t relate with Wizkid’s songs because of his style of music while Burna Boy is huge both in Africa and internationally.

    Speaking in Pidgin, Terry G said: “The Wizkid vs Davido debate, to me is lame. Davido is the king of Africa. He has an African audience.

    “He sings unapologetic African music. But Wizkid’s mindset is targeted at crossover. His music no dey too relate to us [Africans]. Burna Boy na im get Africa and International. He is their king. Burna pass two of them.”

    Singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi aka Terry G has said that trending singer Portable copied his “character”.

    He, however, said the ‘Zazu’ crooner failed to copy the musical part of him.

    Terry G spoke in the latest episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast which premiered on Monday night.

    “Portable picked the acting part of me. He didn’t pick the musical part of me. Music is about the instruments. Is it only about your voice? He didn’t create time to learn any instrument,” he said.

    The ‘Akpako Master’ also spoke over his fight with his colleague, AY. Com.

    “I beat AY.Com, I produced ‘Pass Me Ur Luv’, sang the hook and also had a verse on the song so nobody has the right to tell me not to perform that song at my shows. Moreover, he didn’t pay me for the production,” he said.

    Singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi popularly known as Terry G has asserted that marriage isn’t on the to-do list of musicians stating it is not advisable. 

    According to him, opposite s3x fans would be less comfortable with a musician if they were not married.

    Featuring as a guest in the latest episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Terry G described opposite s3x fans as the “juice of the music industry,” stressing that without them the music industry would be boring.

    He said: “I don’t think marriage is for people like us [musicians]. If I get married, it would restrict me from my female fans.

    “Females are the base of the music, they are the juice of the music industry. Remove them and you are bored.

    “If a music artist announced his marriage publicly, it would affect his female fanbase. Once you are married, you are out of the box. In Nigeria, they say once you are married, you are out of the market. So automatically you are no longer hot.”
