  • Timi Dakolo, Flavour, Bez, others serenade

Timi Dakolo, Flavour, Bez, others serenade

NIGERIAN RnB singer Timi Dakolo of the West Africa Idol fame delivered what many have described as the “mother of all performances” for the evening. He wowed many with his hit song, Great Nation. The hall stood still in awe of Timi, as he sang to the delight of not only Nigerians but the rest of Africa and, indeed, the world.

Nollywood movie star Patient Ozorkwo hugged Timi for making Nigerians proud. The actress was seen reaching out for Timi’s hand and when she eventually did, she planted a kiss on it. This particular scenario later became a subject of homour for popular standup comedian Funny Bone, who accused the actress of not kissing his hand, despite reeling out jokes that got the guests falling over each other.

Flavour’s performance was another great one that could be said to march Timi’s. The guests had a great time grooving to some of his hit songs.

Flavour was the closing act at this year’s AMAAs.  In the views of many, his presence could have brought the event to a halt, if he had been brought in before the other acts.

RnB singer Edge’s performance also scored high among the guests. The Bayelsa State- born Edge literarily put everyone on the edge throughout his performance. The singer got nods from every angle for his singing prowess, which many of the guests compared to internationally acclaimed RnB singers like R. Kelly and Usher, among others.

Nigeria soul singer Bez also didn’t disappoint his fans. Just like Timi, Bez never goes wrong with his Stupid song. Also, Ghana’s 4×4 Group thrilled the guests. Their dance step was well received as the guests tried to imitate them during their performance.

  • ‘I didn’t write Great Nationfor Jonathan’

‘I didn’t write Great Nationfor Jonathan’

By all standards, Timi Dakolo is a good singer and great performer. His voice stands him out. Since he released his soar-away song, Great Nation, he has been in hot demand at home and abroad. He talks about his inspiration and love life in this recent encounter with VICTOR AKANDE. Excerpts:

WHAT actually inspired you to do the song Great Nation?

Actually, it is my love for Nigeria. I have found out that a lot of people still look at this country as if it’s not going to work because there are too many bad things. However, there are positive sides to this country too, in spite of the negative parts. Personally, I would rather say positive things even in negative situations, which is not necessarily a lie.

It is one thing to be convinced about a positive cause and it is another thing to sing about it. What did you actually put in that music because the song came with some strength?

First of all, what I do about music is, I don’t sing music. I see the things that I intend to achieve, I dwell over the song for a very long time and I go back and forth until I achieve what I want. So, I don’t just sing. So, for me to say Nigeria is a great nation, it means I am trying to eliminate every negative thing because this country is our own. As my grandmother would say, “No man go run leave him mama house because he dey catch fire.”

You are from the Niger Delta and the President is also from the area. Is it a coincidence that you sang that song or was it in solidarity with the man in power at the moment?

It is basically written for every Nigerian here or in the Diaspora; it is also for children yet unborn. Let them realise that this country is not just a country, but it is you and me. So, it is not for anybody in particular, but for every true Nigerian by birth or by nationalisation or otherwise. We should all believe that this country is a great nation and we must begin to work towards it. My grandma will always say, “If every man clean him yard, the world will be a cleaner place.” So, it’s not just for anybody in particular; it’s for everybody.

Let’s talk about your new single, Iyawo Mi…

I wrote the song for my wife; it’s me showing my affection in the way I can because music is giving melody to your thoughts. So, I wrote it for her to show how she has affected my life and how great a woman she is. When the melody first came (pauses)… it was the chorus first, actually. I was just ‘chilling’ and doing my thing and it came like that; so, I just thought this is going to be great. But if you want something to last, you have to find a lasting melody to it and I have always wanted to put that African touch. If you listen to it, you will know that it was a live record. So, it’s me telling her that she’s not just my wife, but she’s my friend and joy.
