Universities, others will get more funding, says Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that universities and other tertiary institutions in the country have been factored into his administration’s plan for more funding so that they can compete favourably with others globally.

President Tinubu, who was represented by the Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Someone Banire, said his administration resolved to be on the same page with the Staff-based Unions of Universities to check incessant industrial actions.

He spoke at the 61st Foundation Day and the 35th convocation ceremony of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education.

President Tinubu praised the institution’s management for bracing the task of transformation from a College of Education to a University.

He noted that approval of the federal government to implement the upgrading of Federal Colleges of Education to universities was done with the view to making the graduates of the Nigerian Certificates in Education (NCE)  have expanded opportunities for admissions to universities.

According to him, “It is noteworthy to say that this is the first trial by the Federal Government to do such an upgrade, and it is expected that emerging issues will come up, which is actually the case in the present. However, there is no problem without a solution. We are taking the bull by the horns to frontally address the emerging issues and get them resolved.

“| am aware that the University Council and Senate have been working harmoniously to ensure that the University academic sessions are not disrupted, and the welfare of the staff is also of concern. | was reliably informed that the Council handled the placement of staff into the University Cadres carefully to the extent that the exercise did not result in an internal crisis that could have taken unpalatable dimensions.

“We are taking commensurate steps to decisively address challenges in Universities. My administration was faced with a serious economic downturn at inception, and steps have been taken to fix the economy, which was not too palatable, but the positive results of our efforts are becoming noticeable to Nigerians.”

Acting Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, said a total of 12,556 graduands were conferred with a first degree while 6,268 were conferred with NCE.

Prof. Akintunde said the institution has 88 first-degree programmes to achieve in the first five years.

He said the institution was yet to get a take-off grant, saying, “All that had been achieved had been through the Internally Generated Revenue.”

Dignitaries who were conferred with honorary degrees were Senator Oluremi Tinubu, His Imperial Majesty the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo and Emeritus Professor of African Studies, Prof. Toyin Falola.

Tinubu tasks NNPCL board on economic reforms, energy sector turnaround

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly inaugurated board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) to drive forward the administration’s economic reform agenda, assuring them of his full confidence in their ability to reposition the energy sector and support national growth.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu said the board members were carefully selected based on their character, competence, and track record, urging them to explore innovative solutions to the challenges facing the nation’s oil and gas sector.

“When I started searching, it took a while to come up with the kind of character that you represent. You represent the best in the industry, and I have set goals for you. You have the reputation, resourcefulness, and experience to help the country. It is a call to duty for you”, the President said.

Emphasizing the impact of his administration’s economic reforms, President Tinubu noted that the Nigerian economy is beginning to show signs of resilience and competitiveness, with commendations coming from both domestic and international observers.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga the President said “Nigeria has come of age. It is now more competitive and turning the corner, and with your highly respected team, I can relax and attend to other issues. Thank you for accepting the opportunity to serve your country and our dear country”.

The President stressed the need for the new NNPC Ltd board to embrace self-reliance and pursue a homegrown strategy to navigate the volatility of the global economy.

“Explore all options for a win-win situation for Nigeria. I am so proud of you and believe you will succeed,” Tinubu added.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, praised the President for assembling what he described as Africa’s most capable oil and gas leadership team.

“I got calls from the whole of Africa, my colleagues in OPEC, saying that if this team does not deliver, Nigeria will have to import men from another planet to come and deliver the oil and gas sector in Nigeria,” Lokpobiri said, drawing laughter and applause from attendees.

Chairman of the newly inaugurated Board, Ahmadu Musa Kida, expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, pledging the board’s commitment to integrity, accountability, and excellence.

“We will uphold the highest standard of leadership, courage, and integrity in delivering on your mandate,” Kida said.

Also speaking, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed that the new leadership team had already begun consultations with industry stakeholders to recalibrate the company’s direction.

“We have had several meetings, and we have set a direction with the mandate that you have given us. We have commenced the journey with a bi-weekly meeting with stakeholders”, Ojulari said.

Ojulari revealed early results of the board’s interventions, announcing an increase in oil production from 1.5 million to 1.7 million barrels per day within two months, with a target of 1.9 million barrels by year-end.

He also confirmed that turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries had begun in earnest.

“We will promise what we can deliver, and we will deliver on our promise,” the GCEO assured.

He further noted that President Tinubu’s economic reforms have signaled credibility to global investors, positioning NNPC Ltd as a business-driven entity that is ready to operate transparently and profitably.

Tinubu accepts endorsement as APC sole candidate

Spurred by his endorsement as the All Progressives Congress (APC) sole candidate for the 2027 presidential poll by the various organs of the party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday promised to do more for the country.

The organs – APC Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), National Working Committee (NWC) and members of the party in the National Assembly adopted the President at the APC National Policy Summit tagged: “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far.”

The event held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Tinubu expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to leading Nigeria into a new era of prosperity, saying the “economic reforms” introduced by his administration are working.

“With your support, with your determination, with your resilience, you just believe in our democracy. The endorsement today, the ‘carry-go’ inspiration; I know road. We will lead you on to that Promised Land,” the President assured party faithful.

The summit, attended by top APC stakeholders, served as a platform to review the administration’s performance and restate its policy direction.

Reflecting on the two years since his inauguration, President Tinubu highlighted the economic challenges his administration inherited and the bold steps taken to restore national stability.

He specifically cited the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange windows as necessary – though painful – reforms.

“We couldn’t just afford to spend the future of our children and of unborn babies ahead of their birth. You don’t commit abortion after the baby is born. That’s murder”, he said, defending his action on the fuel subsidy upon assumption of office.

Tinubu emphasized that these reforms, while unpopular with certain elites, have begun to yield positive results, including an uptick in foreign direct investment and greater macroeconomic stability.

“Yes, we encountered challenges when we assumed office in May 2023, but we have made progress by implementing difficult, long overdue, but necessary economic reforms. Our economic reforms are working”, he said.

The President acknowledged the difficulties ordinary Nigerians have faced due to his administration’s policy decisions, but he urged patience and perseverance, assuring that the sacrifices being made will lead to a more prosperous future.

“They fought us with everything at their disposal, but we never said die. We are on. Those selfish elites today must salute the courage of every one of you… salute Nigerians for their perseverance, their patience, their resiliency”, he declared, referencing resistance from entrenched interests.

Highlighting ongoing anti-corruption efforts, Tinubu pointed to a major asset recovery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which reportedly retrieved over 750 properties from a single individual.

“How fast would you have reconstructed this country if you allowed the arbitrage in the exchange rate to continue? That is the grandmother, father of corruption,” he said.

He also appealed to the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of pending tax reform bills, calling out the Senate President and Speaker during his address.

“I hope the bills are passed and will be on their way,” he said.

Tinubu said his administration is redirecting public funds towards essential sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

“We have redirected the easy money away from currency speculators and greedy barons… directed those funds to healthcare, education and infrastructure”, he said.

He urged Nigerians to resist discouragement from critics and to continue supporting the administration’s vision.

“They will continue to abuse, criticize us. Keep faith, my dear brothers and sisters. Be courageous. Confront them. To those who are still contemplating to bail out of their ships, leave them in their empty noise-making vessels”, he said.

He appealed to Nigerians to look beyond the temporary discomfort and embrace the long-term benefits of difficult decisions.

“We must persevere, not because I simply say so, but because it is correct. It is not the easy way out—to bankrupt the nation and leave our house to fall apart”, he said.

He acknowledged the concerns of citizens over basic amenities, noting that “it’s a shame if today, there are communities without potable water” and emphasized his government’s resolve to address such social deficits.

On more political opportunities, Tinubu urged patience among loyalists, saying “to many of you I have not offered political positions, just be patient… there’re so many things coming that will be great, and you’ll be proud of belonging to this party.”

He called for unity and national renewal, pledging continued commitment to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” as Nigeria charts its path toward industrialisation and sustainable development.

“We are the progressives, we’re a happy family. We will trudge on and shoulder on. If in just the first two years we are where we are today, then the next few years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision”, he said.

  • 2027: APC NWC, governors, fed lawmakers endorse Tinubu

2027: APC NWC, governors, fed lawmakers endorse Tinubu

    • President accepts ‘sole candidacy’, promises better days

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday got the nod as the ‘sole candidate’ of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 race.

The party leadership, the APC’s 22 governors and federal lawmakers gave the President a pass mark after his mid-term assessment and decided he should run for re-election.

The President accepted the offer ‘gladly’ and pledged that greater and better days are ahead for Nigerians.

This took place at the Conference Centre in Abuja during the maiden APC Summit – an event organised by the ruling party which brought National Working Committee (NWC) members together with the Executive, the Legislature and governors to assess the performance of the Federal Government in two years.

Ministers Mohammed Idris (Information), David Umahi (Works) and Mohammed Ali Pate (Health), along with National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu gave the scorecard of the Federal Government before more than 2,000 leaders of the party and elected and appointed officials.

Apart from the President and Vice President Kashim Shettima, elders, such as former Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba also attended.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume and Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq (Kwara) addressed the gathering.

The endorsement of the President was triggered by Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum Hope Uzodimma (Imo), a former senator, who, employing the Senate procedure, moved the ‘motion’ after reviewing the performance of the President which he rated highly, that he should be endorsed to run for a second term.

Uzodimma invited the Vice Chairman of PGF, another former senator, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, to step forward and second his motion, which he promptly did, and the hall erupted in applause.

Next, Senate President Godswill Akpabio equally endorsed the President on behalf of federal lawmakers.

National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje rounded off by calling other members of the NWC to stand by him on the podium to make what he called the ‘mother of all endorsements’.

He did this after reading his address, which touched on the president’s performance, the state of the party, and defections, which he said are coming ‘out of conviction and not out of convenience’, among other issues.

Moving the motion for endorsement on behalf of the federal legislators,  Akpabio said: “I move that the President be returned as the sole candidate of the APC in 2027 and as the President of Nigeria. I so move.”

It was seconded by House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who hailed President Tinubu for the dawn of a new era.

Ganduje, who announced the APC leadership endorsement, said: “As the chairman of the party and on behalf of the NWC – the only recognised platform, I believe, legally, to field a candidate in any election – I hereby affirm the various endorsements and declare President Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate of the APC.”

Why governors endorsed President, by Uzodimma

The PGF Chairman explained the reason for the endorsement, saying that the President has been fulfilling his campaign promises to the country in the last two years.

He commended President Tinubu for his doggedness and forthrightness, stressing that the execution of projects by his government had restored hope for a brighter future.

Uzodimma said after a careful assessment of the progress made so far, the 22 governors elected on the platform of the ruling party resolved to back President Tinubu for a second term.

He said: “As I speak only this afternoon, members of the Progressive Governors Forum met at my (Imo) lodge and took five different decisions to bring to the leadership and members of our great party at this gathering.

“Taking advantage of this summit, we are satisfied with the mid-term review and performance evaluation report of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are aware that the Nigerian nation is moving in the right direction, economically, socially and politically, and that we are convinced that under President Tinubu, Nigeria will get to her destination faster in prosperity.

“We have resolved that the president be adopted as our standard bearer for the 2027 presidential election, for a second time in office.

“The governors produced by APC are hereby charged to take responsibility to manage federal government policies, occupy the political space in their domains and take responsibility for winning all elections in their states.”

Akpabio: Tinubu has lived up to expectations

Acknowledging that times are hard, Akpabio predicted a better tomorrow for the country under President Tinubu.

He said things would turn around for good based on the implementation of the bold and courageous policies and programmes of the government.

He urged party members to convert their promises to electoral victory for President Tinubu in 2027, unlike in 2023 when people in some parts of the country attended rallies and the party could not secure 25 per cent of the votes.

Akpabio said: “So, there is no need for eloquent speeches. Let the results that will come in 2027 reflect the actions and the speeches that we are saying here today.

“Please, note that in politics, it’s not over until it’s over. It’s the tree that bears the sweetest fruit that also gets the highest amount of stones.

“So, everything said here will show that yes, you are on course. You did it in Lagos, you are doing it in Nigeria.

“Even Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has changed. The diplomats have confirmed that. This was not the way it was before you came. The economy has changed.

“But the reality is that we are not there yet, and we don’t want them there. Of course, mischief makers are still meeting in the night, so politics is the game of witchcraft. They meet in the night, and things change in the day.”

    Abbas: let’s intensify grassroots mobilisation

The Speaker emphasised the importance of grassroots engagement and mobilisation ahead of 2027.

He urged party members to gird their loins.

He said the party should acknowledge both the achievements recorded and the challenges that lie ahead.

Abbas said: “Now is the time for every APC stakeholder to take our message directly to our communities.

“An electoral victory in 2027 will not be won on paper alone. It can only be secured by the confidence we inspire among our people.

“We can only inspire confidence by demonstrating how our policies are improving people’s lives and how they will continue to enhance the lives of Nigerians.

“All of us must effectively market the successes of the Tinubu Administration, specifically the recovery of fiscal health, the job creation drive, the expansion of infrastructure, and the security gains.

“Every APC governor, every APC Senator and member, every minister and commissioner, every special adviser and assistant, every board member, and indeed, every political appointee of this government must also collaborate with the President to translate his initiatives into tangible benefits that resonate with citizens across every ward.

“By selling our record relentlessly and listening attentively, we will carry the Renewed Hope Agenda forward into the next electoral cycle.

“I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that come 2027, Mr. President and our party will secure a resounding mandate that confirms our capacity to deliver on the promise of a prosperous Nigeria.”

    Ganduje: it is promised fulfilled

Ganduje said President Tinubu is on course, urging the party and Nigerians to support him for continuity.

Emphasising that the President has performed in office, he said: “Barely two years now into his administration, we can confidently say that Renewed Hope is no longer a vision on paper, it is a reality in motion.”

The Chairman urged party chieftains to remain united, stressing that there is strength in unity.

Ganduje added: “As I stand before you, I must stress this truth: we cannot go into the future divided, unprepared, or reactive.

“The challenges of our nation require a cohesive, disciplined, and ideologically sound party.

Tinubu’s mirrors Yew’s legacy, says Akume

Akume likened President Tinubu’s leadership to that of Singapore’s founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, praising his “reform-driven governance.”

He commended the President’s performance, describing it as visionary and transformative, despite public criticism over economic hardship and policy decisions.

Akume said: “In just two years, we have witnessed impactful decisions, strategic reforms, and commitment to national development.

“Mr President’s leadership reminds us of the legendary Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore — the man whose foresight, discipline, and tenacity transformed a small nation into a global model of prosperity and order.

“This is the quality of leadership Nigeria is privileged to have today in President Bola Tinubu.”

Akume said Nigerians are joining the ruling party, not on the basis of promises, but due to visible results and renewed purpose.

He said: “People are joining our party, the APC, not because of mere promises, but because they are experiencing concrete results.

“They see purpose, they see mission and meaning, and they see the bright future ahead. And to those still watching from afar, I say — our doors are wide open.”

He urged party members to begin mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election, adding that they should maintain unity and show dedication.

Akume stressed: “The APC is a movement of progress and inclusiveness because nation-building is not the job of a few — it is a collective task.

“Everyone has a role to play, and we welcome more Nigerians who believe in our ideas and our inspirations.

“As we look ahead to 2027, now is the time to double down on our efforts.”

How we are making Nigeria safer, by Ribadu

Ribadu said the Federal Government and security services in the country have substantially confronted the multi-faceted security challenges inherited by the Bola Administration.

He said through the combined security effort, mass killings, wanton destruction, mass abductions, and terrorist attacks on government installations have been reduced.

He said: “For us to appreciate where we are today, it’s important to reflect on where we were before the coming of this administration on May 29, 2023.”

Ribadu recalled that in the past, terrorists enjoyed a free rein, with Nigeria experiencing attacks on the Abuja-Kaduna train, Kuje Prison, a church in Owo and an army battalion in Bwari, Abuja.

He listed the challenges, including Boko Haram in the Northeast, armed banditry in the Northwest, secessionist agitations by the IPOB/ESN in the Southeast, Niger Delta unrest and communal conflicts/herder-farmer conflicts especially in the North-central.

Ribadu said with the security agencies working as a team, the sit-at-home action in the Southeast and the attack on oil installations in the Niger Delta had been substantially addressed.

Tinubu not under any cabal, says Idris

Idris said  President Tinubu is not under the control of any cabal or any other group.

The minister explained that the president welcomes a wide range of perspectives and takes bold and informed decisions in the best interest of Nigeria.

Idris stressed: “You need to study the president very well. You can have your voice; you can say what you want to say; he will listen to you but his decision is ultimately his own. I think it’s important for us to recognise that.”

Reiterating the President’s commitment to project implementation,  he said: “The Renewed Hope Agenda is about positively impacting the lives of the people of Nigeria, through bold decisions designed to unleash the full scale of Nigerian potential, in a way that has never been seen or done before.”

The minister noted that “true leadership involves the ability to make decisions that might be tough in the short term, but are guaranteed to deliver lasting returns.”

    Umahi lists road projects

Umahi said the President had acknowledged infrastructural development as the catalyst for economic growth.

Presenting his mid-term scorecard, he said the government inherited 2,604 ongoing projects valued at approximately N13 trillion, adding that with the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, the current valuation of the inherited projects stands at about N20 trillion.

He said acting on the President’s directive, he prioritised ongoing legacy projects across the six geo-political zones and major economic corridors.

Umahi said 140 priority projects were selected, with an additional 65 new projects initiated.

The minister pointed out that  260 critical projects were implemented under the 2023 supplementary and 2024 budgets, valued at N208 billion.

He said major rehabilitation work was done on the Third Mainland Bridge, including full re-scoping of 14 kilometres of dual carriageway and ramps.

He gave details of the projects completed and ongoing in the six geo-political zones.

Pate: we have made progress in Health

Prof. Pate lauded Tinubu’s strategic focus on human capital development as a pillar of national progress, particularly in health, education, and social services.

He alluded to the signing of the Health Sector Compact between federal, state, local governments and development partners, which has led to improved coordination, governance, and service delivery.

He said the administration approved 21 key health-related policies, revitalised over 1,000 primary healthcare centres, and supported 37 million patient visits in Q1 2025 alone, an unprecedented increase from pre-2023 levels.

Pate said to reduce maternal mortality, 13 million women secured antenatal services, and more than 4,000 cesarean sections were conducted free of charge.

He said the health workforce capacity has expanded with over 61,000 frontline workers retrained, nurse enrollment increased to 115,000, and the introduction of 774 National Health Fellows now serving in each LGA with automatic employment.

On health insurance, Pate said the number of Nigerians covered rose from 16 million to 20 million within two years, surpassing previous national progress.

He said the administration has also channelled over N80 billion to 1,800 facilities nationwide and mobilised $3.4 billion in investment for the Health Sector Renewal Initiative, supporting over 70 private-sector-led projects and potentially creating 150,000 jobs.

The minister highlighted key infrastructural achievements, including the completion of projects in 61 tertiary hospitals, ongoing revitalisation of cancer centres, and establishment of new manufacturing partnerships within the healthcare value chain.

On health security, he said Nigeria has expanded vaccine coverage and launched 48 nationwide medical outreach missions.

He said confidence in the health system had grown, with surveys indicating a rise from 37 per cent in 2023 to 54 per cent in 2024.

The minister stressed that the foundational reforms set in motion require continued collaboration across all levels of government to sustain and expand the gains achieved thus far.

    Tinubu dismisses one-party state fears

Those thinking that the gale of defections of high-profile opposition figures into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would turn Nigeria into a one-party state are living with the fear of the harmless, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said yesterday.

Dismissing their fears, the President described defections as reflections of the people’s democratic choices and aspirations.

He spoke at the APC National Summit held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

The President was reacting to worries about the growing dominance of the APC, which has welcomed some prominent defectors, including a governor, a former opposition vice presidential candidate, and federal and state lawmakers.

Several opposition leaders have expressed fears that the defections if left unchecked, could erode Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

President Tinubu said: “Before I speak, I just need to tell those saying the one-party system is not good: it is one party ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians.

He said: “I’m glad about what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy.

“Don’t forget that the freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean with the broom.”

Tinubu seeks N’Assembly’s passage of N1.481t Rivers 2025 budget

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday requested the National Assembly to consider  N1.481 trillion as the budget of Rivers State for this year.

Tinubu, in a letter to the two chambers of the federal legislature, explained that the request followed the nullification by the Supreme Court of the earlier budget passed by three members of the then state House of Assembly loyal to suspended Governor Siminalayi  Fubara. The President added that the emergency rule in the state informed his decision.

The President said that N324 billion of the total amount would be spent on infrastructure;  N166 billion,  Health;  N75.6 billion,  Education and N31.4 billion,  Agriculture.

He said by the provisions of the budget, agriculture was expected to generate about 6,000 jobs.

The letter reads in part: “Further to the nullification of the 2025 budget of Rivers State by the Supreme Court, please find here with the 2025 Budget of Rivers State for the consideration of the House.

‘’The House of Representatives may wish to recall that Rivers State is already under emergency rule, which was gazetted in March 2025. The Gazette requires the authorisation of expenditure from the considered revenue of Rivers State for its activities.

  • Tinubu’s successes in transport sector

    Tinubu’s successes in transport sector

    • By Abdullahi O Haruna Haruspice

Sir: In a country where grand political declarations often fizzle into dust, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is scripting a quiet revolution in the transport sector—one that may yet define his legacy as a reformist leader.

At the heart of this transformation is the taciturn yet mercurial Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali, whose disciplined stewardship and technocratic precision have ignited hope in one of Nigeria’s most critical but historically neglected sectors.

While some revolutions are noisy, this one is intelligent, coordinated, and deeply strategic. In just under two years, the Tinubu administration has laid the foundation for what could become Nigeria’s most comprehensive, inclusive, and future-facing transport renaissance.

For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the nation stands on the cusp of adopting a National Land Transport Policy. This policy—now awaiting the approval of the Federal Executive Council—is not merely a document. It is the birth of a unified vision, harmonising Nigeria’s disjointed and inefficient land transport systems under a single strategic framework. When signed into law, it will define priorities, streamline intermodal integration, and offer a clear blueprint for private sector investment and sustainability.

The steel arteries of Nigeria’s economy—the railway lines—are being revived with unprecedented vigour. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, what was once a skeletal promise of rail modernisation has become a breathing reality.

The Kaduna-Kano and Kano-Maradi segments of the Standard Gauge rail lines, which were a mere 15% completed as of May 2023, have now crossed the 50% milestone. This is not progress by political metrics, but by engineering and economic ones.

Moreover, the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna lines—partially completed in previous administrations—have received renewed attention. The administration’s push to finalise the APMT Terminal in Apapa has drastically eased congestion in Lagos.

Over 105 containers are now ferried daily by rail, reducing the heavy burden on our road networks and cutting turnaround time for businesses. With vehicular overpasses constructed to separate rail from road traffic, accidents and delays are becoming relics of the past.

In a bold move to curb revenue leakages and ensure efficiency, e-ticketing has been launched across the Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, and Abuja-Kaduna rail corridors. This digital leap supports financial transparency and enhances passenger convenience. Combined with the retrofitting of NRC locomotives, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna route, commuters are now enjoying faster, safer, and more reliable services.

One of the most forward-looking initiatives of this administration is the Railing with States initiative and the Track Access Programme.

These innovative schemes invite state governments and private investors into the rail operations space, adhering strictly to global standards.

It is a masterstroke that decentralises opportunity and democratises development—encouraging local ownership while setting a new precedent for public-private synergy.

With the soaring cost of living, Tinubu’s administration did not leave the masses behind. The implementation of the 50% Road and 100% Free Rail Presidential Transport Palliatives during the 2023 and 2024 yuletide seasons provided immense relief to Nigerians. These were not token gestures, but practical interventions that touched lives directly, reaffirming the president’s people-first philosophy.

Railway expansion under Alkali’s stewardship has not just focused on new lines.  The historic Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow-gauge corridor is being revived.  The Port Harcourt–Aba stretch is already completed and operational, linking forgotten regions back into the national economic grid and laying tracks of opportunity in their path.

The shift to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a game-changer for both the environment and the economy. With the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) establishing CNG conversion centres and training technicians nationwide, Nigeria is embracing cleaner energy, lowering costs, and empowering a new generation of green engineers. This speaks to a sustainable vision that values both present gains and future generations.

In another silent yet seismic shift, the NITT has facilitated the establishment of a Smart National Transport Data Bank. With it comes improved public safety, enhanced revenue tracking, and optimised operations.  For the first time, the transport sector is becoming data-driven, allowing policymakers and businesses to plan with precision.

Perhaps the most inspiring feather in the administration’s cap is the successful takeoff of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura—Nigeria’s first specialised university for transport studies.  From recruitment to matriculation, the institution is already shaping the minds that will drive Nigeria’s mobility revolution.  Through collaborations with global universities and engineering firms, the university is set to become a hub for technological transfer, research excellence, and policy innovation.

Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali may not be the loudest minister in Tinubu’s cabinet, but his results speak volumes. He is charting a course, not of fleeting announcements but enduring legacies. The president’s decision to place the transport portfolio in Alkali’s capable hands was visionary—and Nigeria is already reaping the rewards.

President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” mantra is manifesting itself in steel rails, digital tickets, smart data banks, clean energy, and empowered citizens. His administration’s work in the transport sector offers a compelling case study in strategic vision, disciplined execution, and quiet impact.

In a country long accustomed to motion without movement, the Tinubu-Alkali axis is finally putting Nigeria in gear. And this time, the destination is progress.

  • North West Commission a golden opportunity

North West Commission a golden opportunity

The NWDC Mandate within the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu

It is interesting that the North West Development Commission (NWDC), has become active after successful legislation, enactment into law and the appointment of a leadership team that is driving the Commission. The Commission’s leadership has hit the ground running at a very important time in the political history of Nigeria. Certainly, this is an important milestone for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I commend Mr. President for balancing the regional intervention initiatives across all the six (6) geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Consequently, as we approach the midterm of President Tinubu’s administration, all eyes are on all the regional development commissions, to witness how they perform and make high tangible impacts in line with their mandates, build up to the 2027 general elections.

Indeed, the NWDC is part of the strategy of President Bola Tinubu to ensure the delivery of not just of good governance, but deepening and widening the scope and the impacts of development and good governance in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. It therefore behooves on the Board of Directors, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, and other top executives of these development commission to succeed.

I commend Mr. President for the consolidation of the regional development agencies or corporations under the Ministry of Regional Development, it is also a welcome development. Indeed. the regional development Commissions will be streamlined, more organized, efficient, and effective under the current federal executive structure.

I am particular about the North West, because where there’s a lot of work cut out for the NWDC in terms of poverty alleviation, support for infrastructural development, in terms of the addressing the serious education deficit in the north, which is a fulcrum of the dwindling, the backwardness of the northwest in the scheme of things in northern Nigeria.

It is important to note that out of the about 70% of the over 100million multidimensionally poor Nigerians (according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics), about 70% are in northern Nigeria, out of which about 50% of them are from the northwest. The vagaries of the insecurity which has pushed a significant number of our farmers from farms thereby impacting food security and other economic variables, natural disasters like flooding, the teeming unemployed youths, increasing number of out-of-school children including the almajris, increasing number of adults, adolescents and children beggars on the streets of the Northwest are all pointers to the dire need for developmental impacts of very important institutions like the North West Development Commission, and by extension, the North East Development, and the North Central Development Commissions.

In addition, the reason why I am reflecting on the NWDC in particular is because I am from Kano State in North West Nigeria. Plus, I believe that the North West, having delivered the highest number of votes to President Tinubu, and indeed to almost every Nigerian that had become a president in this country; the NWDC is a golden opportunity for the northern political leadership in this administration improve good governance impacts. They have no choice but deliver in the next two years.

    Setting the Agenda:

What is the vision and what are the Strategic Objectives?

The question is, what is the vision of the current board and the CEO of the NWDC? What is the strategic blueprint NWDC to ensure that they are front-facing, sure-footed, decisive, and speedy in delivering the mandate?

In my humble opinion, we expect the NWDC to come up with a communication strategy that will key into the overall strategy which will ensure that in the next three months, six months, one year, etc.; the entire North West region and all Nigeria are able to see and feel the footprints and impacts of the NWDC across North West region.

Moreover. I look forward to synergies between the Commission and all the state governors of North West. I am delighted that the executive governors of states in the North West, are fully cooperating and ready to support to this commission across party lines because actually the NDWC is about governance and it is also about the progress of Nigeria. It is also highly impressive that some well-meaning business leaders of Nigeria, from the North West, particularly Ahaji Abdulsamad Isyaku Rabiu, the Chairman, BUA Group of Companies, and Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the President and Founder of the MAAUN Group of Universities, have demonstrated yet again high level of patriotism by donating an entire building blocks of buildings at different locations in Kano State, to the NWDC for their management and operations. I comment the two model indigenes of North West, and model citizens of Nigeria for the very laudable display of uncommon patriotism and love for there people. Certainly, Alhaji Abdusamad Isyaku Rabiu, and Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo have set a good precedence for other leaders of the region to emulate, and I am confident that they. We have a lot of good men and women of sterling character in the North West as always.

The truth is that this Commission is not about political party, ethnicity, tribe of religion, and should not be so or made to be so in any way. The NWDC and other regional development commissions are about developmental impacts on the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Accordingly, I advise the Commission to, as a matter of urgency, convene a strategy session to review their situation. Look at the vision, and what they intend to do with their resources allocated the NWDC and timelines for performance. I expect, that a strategy blueprint in ready or will be ready the next 1 month.

One of the banes of our developments as a nation and as a polity, especially in most part of the past 25 years of this 4th Republic; is the lack of adequate and proper planning, and worse lack proper execution, measurement of performance, and demonstrable impacts. Many leaders fail o communicate properly to Nigerians, and more importantly for the people to feel the impacts. Impacts are dimensioned at different levels, and it is very important for the NWDC to demonstrate a sense of responsibility with a sensing strategy to deliver their mandate. With profound respect, may I remind the NWDC that, “to whom much is given, much is expected”. I am optimistic that the current leadership of the NWDC will succeed. We will continue to support to the NWDC to succeed, as I wish them good luck. I also hope and pray that this will be yet again another layer that will bring succor to the people of the North West in particular and people of Nigeria in general

    Critical Success Factors

Here are some of my initial thoughts with regard to some key focus areas some of which actually align with the NWDC’s priorities:

•I will use this opportunity to still reiterate the importance of governors to the success of the NWDC. They are the leaders of the region, and they have their core responsibilities as enshrined in the 1999 constitution. I urge them, as many Nigerians, to give the ultimate support, which I know they will, to the Northwest Development Commission across party lines.

•Tackling the issue of rising out-of-school children and almadjiris, should be a high priority focus area for which; education, poverty alleviation, and youth empowerment are very critical success factor. On the issue of education, the focus I suggest in my view should be on primary school and secondary school education. Of course, I note clearly that it is a key responsibility or the primary responsibility of state governors.

•A collaboration, with respect to the kind of specific interventions that will be clearly delineated from what the governors are doing is very key in trying to provide interventions for the states to ensure that the teeming uneducated children, and youths are educated, and gainfully employed, in terms of the core academics and more importantly, in technical education. and vocational skills. These is also another critical success factor the NWDC in collaboration with the state governments, for this to be part of the sates’ economic recovery and growth strategy.

•Simultaneously, addressing the issues of unemployment and poverty alleviation, wholesome, recognizing that Northwest Nigeria is one of the major locations of the majority of the multidimensionally poor people of Nigeria.

    • Providing healthcare support system interventions is another a critical success factor; specially in the areas of infant maternal mortality, communicable diseases, waterborne diseases, etc.

•Dealing with the issues the issue of agriculture which is directly related to the level of insecurity in Nigeria and therefore dealing with insecurity, is very crucial and it’s a key priority area for the northwest of Commission to collaborate with state governments to see how they can also support, you know, to deliver this issue.

I will be closely watching developments in NWDC and I hope and pray that this will be the be one of the ways for a turnaround of the socioeconomic situation of our region which is a very critical stakeholder in the scheme of political and socioeconomic structure of schemes and dynamics of Nigeria.

In a subsequent episode I will share more of my thoughts on the very important government initiative.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • How stylish is President Tinubu in suits or Agbada?

How stylish is President Tinubu in suits or Agbada?

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was trendy last week when he appeared at Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration in Rome, Italy, looking very spruce and stylish.

The 73-year-old Tinubu, who joined other world leaders and invited guests to attend the inauguration at the papacy’s behest, spotted a neat and trim two-piece suit with a tie that has left many talking about his cute appearance.

The seemingly bespoke and well-tailored blue coloured peak lapel suit had many talking about the president’s fashion sense. The not-too-new look caught many Nigerians unaware as they seem to have become familiar with his appearances in the cultural Agbada and Babariga attires that is constantly complemented with his signature cap.

A social media user, Stephen Ayolola, complimented Tinubu on his looks, saying, “Tinubu looks better in suit.”

In the same vein, Sopriala Membele agreed with Ayolola, saying, “Tinubu looks good in suit o.”

Umar Faisal also agreed with others, who loved the president’s stunning look, saying, “President Tinubu looks better in a suit.”

It is interesting that many seem to be seeing the president in dapper suits for the first time when, in actual fact, he had spotted suits publicly at different times.

However, the compliments have seen fashion buffs asking if the president should keep spotting dapper suits or traditional attires that are mostly complemented with his signature cap.
