President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrote to the National Assembly on Thursday, requesting consideration and passage of the 2025 budget for the Rivers State government.

  • Onoh lampoons ex-SGF Babachir Lawal over attack on Tinubu’s Vatican visit

Onoh lampoons ex-SGF Babachir Lawal over attack on Tinubu’s Vatican visit

President Bola Tinubu’s former campaign spokesman in the south east, Dr Josef Onoh, has taken  a swipe on the former Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF), Babachir Lawal for making uncomplimentary remarks on the President’s attendance of Pope Leo XIV inauguration in Rome, last week.

Lawal in a television interview, on Wednesday, criticised President Tinubu for attending the Pope’s inauguration as a Muslim, recalling that he (Lawal) was vehemently against Tinubu’s choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 presidential election.

But Onoh picked holes in Lawal’s interview, describing the former SGF as an ignorant Christian whose lack of knowledge on interfaith ecumenism has exposed him to ridicule.

Educating Babachir Lawal, Onoh pointed out several times that the heads of Islam in different countries had paid visits to the Pontiff and vise versa, when different Popes had engaged Islamic leaders in inter religious dialogue which in some cases the Pope went into mosques.

Onoh mocked the former SGF, telling Lawal that he cannot be more Catholic than the Pope who was aware that President Tinubu is a Muslim but invited him for the inauguration, highlighting religious diplomacy and showcasing Nigeria’s commitment to pluralism and mutual respect aimed at fostering peace and cooperation across religious divides.

Onoh said that the Vatican inauguration visit aligned with President Tinubu’s domestic policies on inclusivity, which the president advocated during and after his political campaigns.

“Sadly, playing a Holy Roller, Babachir Lawal failed to acknowledge such a historic moment, potentially the first of its kind for a Muslim Nigerian head of state at such an event. Since Tinubu’s visit to Rome is an insult to Christianity, according to Babachir Lawal, why was Babachir Lawal silent on September 13, 2024, when the late Pope Francis stated in Singapore that all religions are paths to reach God and that they are like different languages in order to arrive at God. But God is God for everyone except for Babachir Lawal,” Onoh mocked.

He further recalled that the late Pope Francis in 2019 while in Morocco stated that God allows different religions as part of his ‘permissive will’, encouraging dialogue among faiths, while Pope John Paul II became the first pope to visit a mosque, specifically the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria, on May 6, 2001.

Onoh further recalled that Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar visited Pope Francis on a dialogue and peace meeting at the Vatican on May 23, 2016, marking a significant step in Catholic-Muslim relations after tensions that followed Pope Benedict XVI’s 2006 Regensburg speech.

“Why was Babachir Lawal silent when Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar invited Pope Francis to the United Arab Emirates, leading to the Pope’s historic visit in February 2019, the first by a Pope to the Arabian Peninsula where they signed the document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together in Abu Dhabi, promoting interfaith harmony and rejecting violence.

“Why was Babachir Lawal silent when Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, met Pope Francis again in 2018 at the Vatican for a private meeting, reinforcing their commitment to interreligious dialogue? Why was Babachir Lawal silent when Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar of Istiqlal Mosque hosted Pope Francis in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 5, 2024, at the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia. They signed the ‘Joint Declaration of Istiqlal 2024,’ advocating religious harmony.”

Going further down in the memory lane, Onoh brought up the peace meeting and Pope’s first visit to Iraq where he met Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf, Iraq on March 6, 2021; recalling also the 2001 mutual forgiveness and dialogue visit of Pope John Paul II to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria,

“Why was Babachir Lawal silent when Dr. Yassine Lafram, President of Union of Islamic Communities of Italy (UCOII) met with Pope Leo XIV (Pope Francis’s successor) on May 20, 2025, at the Vatican to discuss the Gaza crisis, calling for a papal visit to address humanitarian concerns. But today, Babachair Lawal is now talking like a religious grass cutter intoxicated by adulterated holy water just because President Tinubu, a Muslim, was invited to the Vatican.

“May we continue to pray to always find ourselves religiously sober than intoxicated in a pious manner, like Babachir Lawal who’s comment on President Tinubu is now an embarrassment not to Christianity but to himself which led him in his grey hair and old age to speak like a sophisticated rhetorician inebriated by the exuberance of his own verbosity,” Onoh lambasted.

‘Tinubu has adopted bold transformation agenda across oil, gas sector’

    • Diri urges National Assembly to review Petroleum Industry Act

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen Heineken Lokpobiri, has said that his ministry, guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, has adopted a bold transformation agenda across the oil and gas sector.

He also said the government’s focus is on reengineering Nigeria’s energy value chain, making it more efficient, inclusive, and significantly more attractive to both global and local investors.

The Minister spoke yesterday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, during the 2025 edition of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair (NOGOF), organised by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

Lokpobiri stated: “Guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have adopted a bold transformation agenda across the oil and gas sector.

“Our focus is on reengineering Nigeria’s energy value chain, making it more efficient, inclusive, and significantly more attractive to both global and local investors.”

READ ALSO: Oloyede: Beyond the glitch

He said the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) had already laid a strong foundation by streamlining their regulatory framework, improving fiscal terms, and enhancing operational transparency.

He said building on this, the President had approved key reforms through the executive orders that are already catalysing momentum, eliminating red tape, accelerating project approvals, and restoring investors’ confidence.

Lokpobiri said: “This is a new era, one where Nigeria is not begging for investments, but offering bankable, de-risked, and sustainable opportunities in Africa’s most dynamic energy landscape.

“As Chairman of the NCDMB Governing Council, I am immensely proud of how the Board has evolved from enforcing local content compliance to driving industrialisation, innovation, and enterprise development.

“We have moved from targets to impact: today, indigenous companies are maintaining FPSO modules, building marine vessels, managing complex upstream assets, and setting global standards in services and HSE.

“Also, the Nigerian Content Intervention Fund (NCIF), in partnership with the Bank of Industry, has disbursed hundreds (100s) of millions of dollars to local players at single-digit interest rates.

“This is a lifeline that should be driving real growth. Through Project 100+, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources together with the NCDMB is also grooming Nigerian companies to become not just African but global champions. The gains are measurable, but more importantly, they are scalable.

“And with your partnership, we will scale them. Let me be clear: NOGOF is not just a fair, it is a national platform that fosters catalytic investments. The opportunities being showcased during this event are not theoretical wish lists; they are real, vetted, and ready for implementation.

“They represent multibillion-dollar opportunities across upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors. They cut across oil processing, pipeline construction, marginal field development, refining, and logistics. And embedded in every project is a local content dimension, a promise to create jobs, build skills, and retain value within our borders. I urge our partners, financiers, and EPC contractors: go beyond conversations and exchanging of business cards — initiate commitments. Let this edition of NOGOF spark the MOUs, partnerships, and investment decisions that will shape the narrative of the Nigerian petroleum industry for decades to come.”

He said the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the NCDMB were actively expanding training, mentorship, funding access, and innovation hubs tailored to the youths.

“We are committed to fostering inclusive growth. So, whether you are a startup working on energy tech, a female-led fabrication firm, or a young engineer seeking experience, there is space for you at the heart of Nigeria’s oil and gas revolution,” Lokpobiri noted.

Concerning this year’s theme, ‘Driving Investment and Production Growth: Shaping a Sustainable Oil and Gas Industry through Indigenous Capacity Development’, the Minister emphasised it contained three interconnected pillars: first, the drive for increased investment, which is critical to unlocking new exploration, reviving dormant assets, and modernising infrastructure across the oil and gas value chain; second, the imperative of boosting crude oil production to stabilise the economy, strengthen reserves, and enhance energy security; and third, the strategic focus on indigenous capacity development, ensuring that Nigerian expertise, enterprises, and innovations are central to the sector’s growth.

Therefore, he said the theme is not just a statement; it is a clear call to action, a call to rethink “how we produce, how we partner, and how we build—not just for today’s energy needs, but for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity.”

Also speaking, Bayelsa State Governor, Sen  Douye Diri again called on the National Assembly to review the PIA, to enable state governments in oil producing areas to play statutory roles in overseeing development projects in host communities.

Represented by his deputy, Sen Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the governor noted that while the extant PIA empowers oil and gas bearing communities to directly receive oil proceeds accruing to them without recourse to state governments, hostilities emanating from the management of such funds were always being channeled to government for settlement.

According to him bringing governments of oil bearing states on board will do a whole lot of good in the planning and implementation of community development projects because most of the communities lack the capacity to deal with such investments.

He said: “The current PIA does not give any responsibility to the state government but rather a lot of liabilities.  When the IOCs bypass the state government and deal directly with our communities which unfortunately do not have stable and reliable structures to handle such investments, it gives room for hostilities.

“Our call is on the National Assembly to look at the possibility of rejigging the PIA to prescribe statutory roles for host governments. Also, the attitude of the IOCs is not different from the indigenous oil firms that have taken over their assets.”

Diri equally expressed displeasure over the exclusion of host governments in the Shell Petroleum Development Company and Agip Oil Company’s divestment of their shares, despite its operations for over 70 years in the Niger Delta.

He said when the oil firms were divesting their shares, the state government made efforts for some shares to be allocated to it but to no avail, stressing that attitude of some of the indigenous firms that bought over the shares had not change from their predecessors in terms of lack of best operational practices.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Secretary, NCDMB, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, said the forum provided them with a strategic platform to share forward-looking insights, showcase upcoming projects, and deepen collaboration across the oil and gas value chain.

More importantly, he said it reminded all the power of local capacity innovation, and inclusive partnerships in shaping the future of the oil and gas industry.

Ogbe stated: “This year’s theme — “Driving Investment and Production Growth: Shaping a Sustainable Oil and Gas Industry through Indigenous Capacity Development”—could not be more timely.

“It coincides with the 15th year anniversary of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act, 2010.

“Following the establishment of the Board, we created a 10 years road map to deepen local participation and increase the participation of Nigerians in the activities of the oil and gas industry.  Today, we have moved from five per cent in-country value retention in 2010 to 56% in December 2024.

“As the global energy landscape evolves, Nigeria must position herself as an attractive hydrocarbon investment destination and also as a beacon of sustainable development powered by local companies.

“Since the enactment of the NOGICD Act in 2010, we have made remarkable progress in building the capability and capacity of Nigerians and of Nigerian companies, attracting critical investments in-country, and enhancing value retention.”

  • APC National Secretary Basiru woos three Osun PDP senators after Tinubu endorsement

APC National Secretary Basiru woos three Osun PDP senators after Tinubu endorsement

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu second term bid is attracting more support from opposition party members.

The three senators from Osun State – Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Lere Oyewumi (Osun West) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central) – all elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared support for President Tinubu.

The support for the president’s reelection also received a boost as Benue State APC National Assembly Caucus endorsed him for a second term.

The National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, enjoined the three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Osun State to consider joining the APC after declaring support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

In the last one year, no fewer than 10 senators and 30 House of Representatives members had defected from the opposition to the ruling party and pledged to support the President for another term.

In a joint statement issued in Abuja under the Osun PDP Senators’ Caucus, the lawmakers said their decision followed a strategic meeting where they unanimously agreed that Tinubu’s leadership was the right path forward for Nigeria.

“This is more than an endorsement—it’s a bold declaration of confidence in President Tinubu’s vision and delivery,” the senators stated. “From infrastructure to food security, national stability to economic reform, his administration is already producing tangible results that cannot be ignored.”

They pointed to marked reductions in food prices, improvements in national security, and a growing sense of economic stability as signs of the President’s effectiveness. The lawmakers also emphasized that their constituencies are fully aligned with this decision, saying, “Osun stands firmly behind Tinubu.”

Basiru, an APC governorship aspirant in Osin State, commended the Osun senators for endorsing President Tinubu for 2027 poll, describing them as ‘Omoluabi (men of good character).

However, he said in a statement by his campaign manager, Professor Remi Ajala, that the decision of the trio to support Tinubu’s re-election would only be meaningful if they join  the APC.

Basiru said: “The public recognition by the PDP senators of President Tinubu’s achievements especially in the areas of infrastructure development, economic reforms, food security, and national security is another testimonial that Nigeria is working under our leader and moving towards the clear path of development and it shows a clear act of truthfulness and statesmanship.

“This shows his leadership and style of governance are bringing positive results to Nigerians, including the electorates and constituents in their different senatorial districts in Osun State.

“We appreciate that these senators have acknowledged the Renewed Hope Agenda and how it is beginning to positively impact their constituencies. This kind of honest leadership deserves to be encouraged and applauded, especially in a time when Nigerians seek real progress.”

Basiru, who represented Osun Central in the Senate between 2019 and 2023, urged the three PDP senators to take their loyalty and support a step further by joining the ruling party.

He said it is is not enough to praise the President from a distance for self-serving purposes, adding that they should wholly align fully with the progressive family at the national and state levels to cement their endorsement.

Basiru added: “Full alliance and alignment with APC at the state level will show true commitment and allow Osun State and her citizens to fully benefit from the President’s bigger vision to integrate development across the length and breath of Nigeria.

“Pitching your tent with the APC will help bring the needed development to Osun APC led-state government when inaugurated in 2026, in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, agriculture, sustainable economy, healthcare.”

“It will also help end the underperformance and maladministration currently witnessed under the deceptive administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

“We call on the three Osun PDP senators to display courage and show real leadership by joining forces with progressive elements and emulating other National Assembly lawmakers who have already moved to the APC. This is the time to act for the good of Osun State and Nigeria at large.”

He said: “Our endorsement is rooted in a comprehensive assessment of President Tinubu’s transformative leadership, his unwavering commitment to national development, and the tangible achievements recorded under his administration since May 29, 2023.”

He said “under President Tinubu’s leadership, Benue State has witnessed unprecedented infrastructural development, significantly enhancing connectivity and economic activities.”
