    Elder statesman slams Tinubu’s critics

elder statesman and ally of winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, has slammed past leaders criticising President Bola Tinubu administration.

A statement by Kazeem said the President had been vindicated, going by the comment by former minister, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, who called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and others to stop making comments against the administration and allow it to concentrate on delivering good governance to the people.

Kazeem decried unsolicited advice for President Tinubu by the past leaders.

He urged them, like in the words of Akinyemi, to take their deserved rest and be observers like Yakubu Gowon and AbdulSalami Abubakar.

Kazeem condemned continuous interference by Obasanjo, urging him to desist.

He knocked Atiku for his consistent attack, ‘’pretending as if he likes Nigeria more than other Nigerians.’’

Kazeem said: “Atiku has continued to show his desperation, even at the detriment of the progress and development of Nigeria.

“He behaves as if he has all Nigerians in his pocket with the way he talks and addresses national issues, which ordinarily should be done not with selfish interest.”

The elder statesman also cautioned Obi, Nasir El-Rufai and others to show a bit of respect for the exalted office of the president.

    ‘Don’t blame Tinubu for defections’

A former lawmaker in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has warned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties not to blame President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the defection of their members to the ruling party.

Oyintiloye, who represented Obokun State Constituency on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), in a statement yesterday said rather than blame the President, members of the opposition parties should look inward and embrace internal democracy.

He said the recent gales of defections were due to ideological persuasion and not any form of coercion as being speculated in some quarters.

Oyintiloye said opposition parties were losing members because of long existing internal wrangling unattended to over the years in their fold.

“Many defectors claimed they were sidelined, undermined, unfairly treated by their former parties, leaving them with no option but to switch to a party with sustainable transformation agenda.

“This season of political recalibration that is leading to growing number of politicians defecting en masse to the ruling APC is an indication that the party has shown courage of being capable to transform the country through the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the President.

“President has shown commitment to prioritise national development and create a more viable platform. This is winning members into the APC fold,” he said.

Oyintiloye predicted more defections from the opposition parties, especially PDP, warning that “PDP should not blame the President or APC for its lack of cohesion.”

He dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the wave of defections of members of the opposition parties to APC could lead to one party system.

Tinubu okays licences for Kolmani oil project

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted approval for the issuance of all critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Projects.

The project is located between Bauchi and Gombe States, where the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) said oil search would resume.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri disclosed this during the flag off the construction of the permanent site for the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy, Alkaleri (BOGAA).

He said the imperative to activate all available oil platforms for increased production, led Tinubu to grant approvals for the issuance of all the Kolmani project’s critical regulatory licenses.

According to him,  despite the global shift toward renewable energy, oil and gas remain vital to Nigeria’s development and revenue generation.

Lokpobiri noted that renewed efforts at Kolmani have gained momentum following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to immediately renew exploration licenses for operating companies.

He assured that the federal government is ready to work closely with both Bauchi and Gombe states to ensure the project’s success.

The minister said the establishment of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy demonstrates the government’s resolve to develop local capacity and ensure a skilled workforce for Kolmani operations.

He said the academy will play a pivotal role in bridging the skills gap in the energy sector.

He further disclosed that crude oil from Kolmani has already been factored into Nigeria’s projected production capacity, highlighting  its role in the nation’s broader energy strategy.

“Oil and gas will not disappear. They will continue to be central to our economic survival. No country is scaling down investment in this sector,” Lokpobiri stated.

He clarified that while the Paris Agreement advocates reduced carbon emissions, it does not call for a halt to oil and gas investments.

He explained that Nigeria is committed to leveraging its hydrocarbon assets responsibly as part of a balanced approach to energy transition.

Also speaking at the event, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, described the occasion as a milestone in his administration’s drive to promote vocational education and empower youths and women in the oil and gas sector.

Governor Mohammed acknowledged the federal government’s continued support for the Kolmani project, including funding support, part of which has been allocated to the construction of the academy.

He revealed that the state government has earmarked N6 billion for the project and has already taken steps to ensure its successful implementation.

To support its early take-off, the governor directed each local government area in the state to sponsor 10 students and announced a 50 percent tuition subsidy for all enrollees at the academy.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Natural Resources Development, Maiwada Bello, recalled that the academy was approved in 2020 and has since enrolled over 500 students.

He noted that academic activities have commenced at a temporary site within the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic.

The Kolmani oil field, bordering Bauchi and Gombe States, was first inaugurated two years ago by former President Muhammadu Buhari in a historic move marking the first oil exploration venture in northern Nigeria.

    • President at Pope’s inauguration mass •Leo XIV pledges peace in the world

Nigeria’s diversity should be harnessed to create prosperity for the people, the President said yesterday in Rome, Italy.

He spoke during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference on the sidelines of the inauguration mass for Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was among the 30 heads of state/government who witnessed the official coming into office of Pope Leo XIV, who was voted as the 267th Pontiff by the cardinals on May 8.

According to his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President said: “If we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity, the country’s hope is stability and progress.”

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria President Archbishop Lucius Ugorji expressed appreciation to the President for facilitating their visit to Rome for the burial of the late Pope Francis and the installation of his successor.

Ugorji, who is the Archbishop of Owerri, said: “You are always there for us. Now that you have come to the Vatican, whenever we have our conference in Nigeria, we will also invite you, and we look forward to interfacing with you just as you were able to do with the Holy Father.”

Other clerics at the meeting include Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of Sokoto Diocese.

At another meeting with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue, tolerance and cooperation in a world increasingly challenged by religious and ideological polarisation.

“Our dialogue was marked by a spirit of fraternity and a shared vision for the future. We discussed common values such as peace, mutual respect, and global solidarity,” President Tinubu wrote about the meeting on his verified X handle, @officialABAT.

He used the opportunity to convey Nigeria’s appreciation for the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and its spiritual engagement with the Nigerian people, many of whom are adherents of the Catholic faith.

“I expressed Nigeria’s deep appreciation for the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and reaffirmed our commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue, tolerance and cooperation in an increasingly polarised world,” the President stated.

The interaction with Cardinal Parolin underscores the strategic importance Nigeria places on faith-based diplomacy, especially at a time when global events have accentuated divisions along religious and ethnic lines.

“As always, Nigeria remains a nation open to friendship, grounded in faith, and committed to building bridges of understanding across the world,” President Tinubu added.

The President’s visit to the Vatican comes at a time when Nigeria continues to play a prominent role in peacekeeping and religious reconciliation efforts across Africa.

His participation in the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV is seen as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s engagement with the global faith community.

President Tinubu attended the Mass decked in a pair of suits with a tie to match.

He led a delegation including Minister of State Foreign Affairs Mrs Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, Senior Special Assistant Foreign Affairs Ademola Oshodi, Onanuga, Archbishops Ugorji, Kaigama and Bishop Kukah.

The President told reporters after the mass that: “It’s consistent in the true sense of unity in diversity, and I’m greatly honoured.

“We have to continue to work on it. It’s a work in progress for the sake of our country and the continent as a whole”.

    What Tinubu’s invitation means

Also providing perspectives to President Tinubu’s participation at the event at the Vatican were Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Onanuga and Oshodi.

Mrs Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the President’s participation as a gesture rich with symbolism and diplomatic value.

“I think it’s very symbolic and indicative of the great solidarity that he continues to show, not just to the Muslim community, but to the entire Christian community.

“He has shown this solidarity with the millions of people who are of the Catholic faith in Nigeria by attending this Mass, being himself a Muslim,” she said.

She emphasised that the gesture not only speaks to President Tinubu’s domestic vision but also aligns with global aspirations for peace, especially those championed by the new Pontiff.

“This has also shown his commitment to the advancement of peace, not just in the African region, but globally, because this particular Pope is committed to the restoration of peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

“These are aspirations also shared by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said.

Mrs. Odumegwu-Ojukwu also highlighted the personal connection that influenced the invitation.

“The Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Parolin, actually extended this invitation to President Bola Tinubu on behalf of the Pope, of the Augustinian Order, who had spent quite a great deal of time in Nigeria.

“So he has a personal connection and affiliation to Nigeria, and it was quite important to the new Pontiff that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a country he has a great deal of fondness for, share this very special installation event with him,” she explained.

Onanuga stressed the President’s inclusive approach to governance, noting that President Tinubu’s actions consistently reflect a commitment to religious harmony.

“For me, what the President has shown is that he’s a man who is tolerant of all religions and who believes in interfaith harmony. He’s even demonstrated it by the kind of appointments he made.

“I read somewhere that 62 per cent of his cabinet members are Christians. That shows the kind of man he is,” Onanuga said.

Oshodi echoed similar sentiments, arguing that President Tinubu’s participation challenges outdated global perceptions about Nigeria’s religious landscape.

“It changes the misconception that Nigeria is not a free, fair place to worship for multiple religious faiths.

“It shows that a Muslim President can be accepted and is liberal enough to carry the whole country along,” Oshodi said.

According to him, the Vatican’s invitation to President Tinubu affirms Nigeria’s growing reputation as a country where religious freedom is upheld by leadership.

He said: “It changes the perception that Nigeria has this everlasting sectarian conflict between Christians and Muslims.”

“It shows that the Vatican, the papal authority, can see it fit to invite the President to represent the great country of Nigeria and show that freedom of religion is prevalent and recognised by the leadership of Nigeria.”

Tinubu trades banters with Obi, Fayemi at Vatican

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday met with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the Vatican City during the installation Mass of Pope Leo XIV.

The three Nigerian political figures, who were in Rome for the high-profile religious event, exchanged pleasantries in a brief but symbolic encounter that was made public by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga via a post on his verified X handle.

According to Onanuga, Fayemi, a Papal Knight and devout Catholic, spotted President Tinubu seated with other global leaders during the Mass and invited Obi to join him in greeting the President.

Obi, also a staunch Catholic and Papal Knight, agreed.

“Fayemi sighted President Tinubu, where he sat with other leaders, and asked Obi to follow him to pay homage to the Nigerian leader. Obi agreed,” Onanuga wrote.

He added that Fayemi introduced the moment with a light-hearted remark to the President: “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

President Tinubu responded in kind, quipping: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”

The exchange drew laughter from Obi, who replied, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”

The encounter, though brief, has drawn public attention back home, with many viewing it as a rare display of civility and mutual respect among political opponents.

The moment at the Vatican comes amid broader calls for unity and collaboration among Nigeria’s political leaders, especially as the country navigates complex economic and security challenges.

2027: Tinubu, APC will win by landslide, says Barau

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has said the gale of defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the endorsement by the party’s stalwarts in the Northwest have shown that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party will win the 2027 general election by a landslide.

Barau, who spoke at the APC Northwest stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna at the weekend, called for unity among party members to work for the success of Mr. President and APC.

He said: “It is clear (what will happen) in 2027. We are going to have a landslide victory, in shaa Allah. So, let us continue on the way we are going. Let us continue to cooperate with one another, work with the President, work with everybody, cooperate amongst ourselves so that we have the desired victory.”

Barau noted that the defection of stalwarts of the opposition parties to the APC was as a result of the performance of President Tinubu in addressing the challenges bedeviling the country.

“This is not happening just for nothing. There are reasons for this. What are the reasons? Number one is the performance of our dear President. The President, of course, inherited a lot of challenges bedeviling our country. But he has come up with programmes and policies to surmount these challenges.

“Security challenges, economic challenges, name them. We’ve seen how he has dealt with our problems; our security problem — the security we’ve been facing in the Northwest. Several areas were not accessible before now. You could not go to some areas before now. But now, you can go to some places, you can travel from Abuja to Kaduna. This was quite impossible before he came to power.

“Similarly, before this administration, you could not go to Birnin Gwari. But life has returned to the area. The people have returned to their farmlands.

“Several areas that were not accessible are now accessible. We know we are not where we want to be; we are not there yet. We are not finally there yet. But it’s a work in progress. Mr. President is working hard, day in and day out, to surmount this country’s insecurity problem, particularly in the Northwest. It is work in progress. It is easy to have problems, but it’s not easy to solve the problems.

“The chairman, the national chairman of our party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is leading all the party leaders in the country to bring about these improvements we are witnessing in APC.”

Also, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani said the Northwest is now faring better under President Tinubu’s administration.

The governor recalled that President Tinubu “took control of our nation’s affairs at one of the most difficult times in its history”.

  • ‘Tinubu fair to six geo-political zones on appointments’

‘Tinubu fair to six geo-political zones on appointments’

    • By Stephen Oribamise

Prof. Chinedu Nebo has accused President Tinubu’s administration of tribalism and nepotism. As a concerned Nigerian who has witnessed the evolution of our public institutions over the years, I feel compelled to respond to what appears to be a classic case of selective amnesia.

Prof. Nebo claimed in the interview that “virtually every appointment that comes out goes to the Southwest” under President Tinubu, adding that “Tinubu is much worse” than former President Buhari in this regard. Such serious accusations from a former minister and respected academic require careful scrutiny, especially when coming from someone whose own administrative record raises troubling questions.

As a parent of a student who attended Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) during Prof. Nebo’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor (2010-2013), I witnessed firsthand the transformation of what should have been a truly federal institution into what many described as an “Enugu outpost.” It was common knowledge on campus that an overwhelming majority of directors and heads of units–reportedly over 90%–hailed from Enugu State, Prof. Nebo’s home state.

The senior staff composition during that period reflected a similar pattern, with approximately 80% reportedly coming from the same region. How can Prof. Nebo, with this record, point fingers at others over regional favoritism? Is this not a textbook example of the pot calling the kettle black?

Perhaps most troubling was the sidelining of the then-registrar, Mr. Abiodun Adeyemo.

As parents of a new institution, we watched this unfold with disappointment, seeing a federal institution meant to foster nationalunity being run as though it were a private family business.

Read Also: Pope’s inaugural Mass: Tinubu banters with Obi, Fayemi at Vatican

Let me be clear: I support robust criticism of any government. President Tinubu’s administration must indeed ensure that federal appointments reflect Nigeria’s diversity. But such criticism loses all moral authority when it comes from individuals who have demonstrably failed to uphold the very principles they now champion.

The concept of federal character is enshrined in our constitution precisely because we recognize the danger of concentrating power and resources within any single ethnic or regional group. But this principle cannot be selectively invoked only when it serves personal political interests.

To Prof. Nebo and others who suddenly discover the importance of federal character when they are out of power, I say: practice what you preach. Our nation’s unity is too important to be weaponised for political convenience.

The next time Prof. Nebo feels compelled to lecture Nigerians about tribalism, perhaps he should first reflect on his own legacy at FUOYE and ask whether he upheld the inclusive values he now demands from others.

Tinubu to Catholic Bishops in Rome: Let’s harness our diversity for national prosperity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians to turn the nation’s religious and cultural diversity into a source of strength and prosperity, rather than division and conflict.

Speaking in Rome on Sunday during a meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of unity, inclusion, and leadership committed to the common good.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the President said “if we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity, the country’s hope is stability and progress”.

The President, who led Nigeria’s official delegation to the installation Mass of Pope Leo XIV, described the moment as historic, saying it was a privilege to be President at a time when a new Pontiff was being inaugurated.

The Nigerian bishops were part of the presidential delegation that attended Sunday’s Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Their presence, President Tinubu noted, reflected the importance of faith and interreligious harmony in national life.

The President also used the opportunity to urge leaders across all levels of government to prioritize the welfare of the people and focus on building a stable and prosperous nation.

Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for facilitating their visit to Rome — both for the burial of the late Pope Francis and the installation of his successor.

“You are always there for us. Now that you have come to the Vatican, whenever we have our conference in Nigeria, we will also invite you, and we look forward to interfacing with you just as you were able to do with the Holy Father”, Archbishop Ugorji said.

Other leading clerics present at the meeting included Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese.
