Pope’s inaugural Mass: Tinubu banters with Obi, Fayemi at Vatican

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday met with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the Vatican City during the installation Mass of Pope Leo XIV.

The three Nigerian political figures, who were in Rome for the high-profile religious event, exchanged pleasantries in a brief but symbolic encounter that was made public by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to Onanuga, Fayemi, a Papal Knight and devout Catholic, spotted President Tinubu seated with other global leaders during the Mass and invited Obi to join him in greeting the President.

Obi, also a staunch Catholic and Papal Knight, agreed.

“Fayemi sighted President Tinubu, where he sat with other leaders, and asked Obi to follow him to pay homage to the Nigerian leader. Obi agreed,” Onanuga wrote.

He added that Fayemi introduced the moment with a light-hearted remark to the President: “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

President Tinubu responded in kind, quipping: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”

The exchange drew laughter from Obi, who replied, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”

The encounter, though brief, has drawn public attention back home, with many viewing it as a rare display of civility and mutual respect among political opponents.

Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, securing over six million votes.

President Tinubu, declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), polled over eight million votes.

The moment at the Vatican comes amid broader calls for unity and collaboration among Nigeria’s political leaders, especially as the country navigates complex economic and security challenges.

Tinubu reaffirms commitment to national unity at Vatican Mass

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s unity across its diverse religious and cultural communities, describing it as a continuous journey he remains devoted to.

The President made this declaration on Sunday at the Vatican City, where he attended the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV.

Tinubu was present at the ceremony following a personal invitation from the Pope, delivered through the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Speaking to journalists after the Mass, President Tinubu said, “It’s consistent in the true sense of unity in diversity, and I’m greatly honored. We have to continue to work on it. It’s a work in progress—for the sake of our country and the continent as a whole.”

His remarks came as part of a brief exchange with the press, where he was asked what his attendance at such a high-profile Christian event meant for the national unity he has long championed.

The president’s attendance at the high-profile Catholic event, as a Muslim leader, has been widely interpreted as a significant gesture of interfaith harmony and national cohesion. It also underscores his longstanding advocacy for unity among Nigeria’s religious and ethnic groups.

Also providing perspectives to President Tinubu’s participation at the event at the Vatican were Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, Ademola Oshodi.

Mrs Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the President’s participation as a gesture rich with symbolism and diplomatic value.

“I think it’s very symbolic and indicative of the great solidarity that he continues to show, not just to the Muslim community, but to the entire Christian community. He has shown this solidarity with the millions of people who are of the Catholic faith in Nigeria by attending this Mass, being himself a Muslim”, she said.

She emphasized that the gesture not only speaks to Tinubu’s domestic vision but also aligns with global aspirations for peace—especially those championed by the new Pontiff.

“This has also shown his commitment to the advancement of peace, not just in the African region, but globally also, because this particular Pope is committed to the restoration of peace in Ukraine and Gaza

“These are aspirations also shared by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, she noted.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also highlighted the personal connection that influenced the invitation.

“The Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Parolin, actually extended this invitation to President Bola Tinubu on behalf of the Pope, of the Augustinian Order, who had spent quite a great deal of time in Nigeria.

“So he has a personal connection and affiliation to Nigeria, and it was quite important to the new Pontiff that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a country he has a great deal of fondness for, share this very special installation event with him”, she explained.

Presidential Spokesman, Onanuga, stressed the President’s inclusive approach to governance, noting that Tinubu’s actions consistently reflect a commitment to religious harmony.

“For me, what the President has shown is that he’s a man who is tolerant of all religions and who believes in interfaith harmony. He’s even demonstrated it by the kind of appointments he made. I read somewhere that 62% of his cabinet members are Christians. That shows the kind of man he is”, Onanuga said.

He added that the President’s gesture at the Vatican was meant to reaffirm to Nigerians that they are one people despite religious differences.

“We may have different religions, we may have different perspectives about God, but we are worshiping one God. And that’s what he has shown by coming to this event”, Onanuga said.

Ademola Oshodi, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, echoed similar sentiments, arguing that Tinubu’s participation challenges outdated global perceptions about Nigeria’s religious landscape.

“It changes the misconception that Nigeria is not a free, fair place to worship for multiple religious faiths. It shows that a Muslim president can be accepted and is liberal enough to carry the whole country along”, Oshodi said.

According to him, the Vatican’s invitation to Tinubu affirms Nigeria’s growing reputation as a country where religious freedom is upheld by leadership.

“It changes the perception that Nigeria has this everlasting sectarian conflict between Christians and Muslims.

“It shows that the Vatican, the papal authority, can see it fit to invite the President to represent the great country of Nigeria and show that freedom of religion is something that is prevalent and recognized by the leadership of Nigeria”, he added.

Defections not Tinubu’s fault, Ex-Osun lawmaker tells PDP, opposition parties

A former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties against blaming President Bola Tinubu for the recent wave of defections into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement on Sunday, Oyintiloye, who previously represented Obokun State Constituency on the APC platform, said the opposition should focus on addressing internal issues within their parties rather than pointing fingers at the president.

He argued that the defections were driven by ideological alignment and personal conviction, not coercion, as some have claimed.

“The movement of members from one party to another is not unusual in a democracy. What we are witnessing is largely due to unresolved internal disputes within the opposition parties,” he said.

Oyintiloye maintained that the APC’s appeal was growing, while opposition parties continued to lose members due to what he described as long-standing internal wrangling and lack of internal democracy.

He urged leaders of the affected parties to reflect on their internal structures and work toward genuine reconciliation, rather than accusing the ruling party of interference.

“So many defectors claimed that they were sidelined, undermined, unfairly treated by their former parties, leaving them with no option but to switch to a party with a sustainable transformation agenda.

“This season of political recalibration that is leading to the growing number of Nigerian politicians defecting en masse to the ruling APC is an indication that the party has shown courage in being capable of transforming the country through the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the president.

“Mr. President has shown commitment to prioritise national development and create a more viable platform. That is winning members into the APC fold,” he said.

He predicted more defections from the opposition parties, especially PDP, warning that “PDP should not blame the President or APC for its lack of cohesion.”

He also dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the wave of defections of members of the opposition parties to APC could lead to one party system.

…Asiwaju, APC will win landslide in 2027 – Barau

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has declared that the Northwest zone is witnessing notable progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing the region as the heartbeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the APC North West Stakeholders’ meeting held in Kaduna over the weekend, Governor Sani, who also serves as the coordinating governor for the APC in the zone, praised President Tinubu’s leadership during what he called one of Nigeria’s most challenging periods.

“President Tinubu took charge at a very difficult time in our nation’s history,” he said. “Yet, he has demonstrated uncommon courage by implementing bold reforms that are beginning to yield results.”

According to him, the President’s decisive actions have started restoring public confidence, with more citizens and political figures now aligning with the APC.

He also noted a significant improvement in the region’s security landscape. “Before President Tinubu assumed office in 2023, the North West was the epicentre of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crimes,” he recalled.

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy Senate President, Barau I Jibrin, expressed confidence that President Tinubu and the APC will secure another victory in the 2027 general elections.

‘’You could hardly travel from one place to another. Farmers could hardly access their farmers. Life was indeed ‘nasty, short, and brutish’ in the North West. At a point, the situation appeared hopeless. But two years in the saddle, the situation has changed.

‘’President Tinubu has not only stabilized the security situation, he has boosted agriculture in the North West with the provision of farm inputs,’’ he argued.

Governor Uba Sani pointed out that the ‘’North West has also gotten top positions at the federal level. For the first time, the North West Zone has 12 Ministers in the Federal Cabinet.

‘’We have the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, the National Chairman of the APC, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the Chief of Air Staff. There are many other important appointments which I may not be able to mention here because of time,’’ he added.

The Governor listed some projects that the Tinubu administration is embarking on in the North West, especially the ‘’completion of the Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano Dual Carriageway.’’

He also mentioned the Ilella – Badagry Road Project, the Kaduna and Kano Rail Projects, the construction of Birnin Gwari-Kaduna Road and the construction of Jere to Kafanchan Road.

The North West Coordinating Governor also listed the provision of N95 billion for the rehabilitation of three dams in Kano, the creation of the strategic Ministry of Livestock Development and the ‘’creation of the North West Development Commission and the allocation of the highest budget to it among the regional development commissions.’’

The Governor credited the Tinubu administration with the ‘’creation of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State and the conversion of Patrick Yakowa General Hospital, Kafanchan to a Federal Medical Centre.’’

He reiterated that ‘’we have in Mr. President a true father and friend. Let us therefore consolidate on our gains by mobilizing our people to support Mr. President for a second term in office.”

Governor Uba Sani further said that ‘’Mr. President is on a mission: to reinvent our economy, banish hunger and poverty, and return Nigeria to its rightful place in the comity of nations.’’

In his own remarks at the event, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I Jibrin said it is clear that President Tinubu and APC will have a landslide victory in 2027. He therefore called for unity among party members to ensure the success of Mr President.

According to him, “it is clear in 2027, we are going to have a landslide victory, inshallah. So let us continue on the way we are going. Let us continue to cooperate with one another, work with the president, work with everybody, cooperate amongst ourselves so that we have the desired victory.”

He said the defection of stalwarts of the opposition political parties to the APC was as a result of the performance of President Tinubu in addressing the challenges bedeviling the country.

“This is not happening just for nothing. There are reasons for this. What are the reasons? Number one is the performance of our dear president. The president, of course, inherited a lot of challenges, bedeviling our country. But he has come up with programs and policies to surmount these challenges.

“Security challenges, economic challenges, name them. We’ve seen how he has dealt with our problem, our security problem—the security we’ve been facing in the North West. Several areas were not accessible before now. You could not go to some areas before now. But now you can go to some places, you can travel from Abuja to Kaduna. This was quite impossible before he came to power.

“Similarly, before this administration, you could not go to Birnin Gwari, but life has returned to the area. The people have returned to their farmlands

“Several areas that were not accessible are now accessible. We know we are not where we want to be. We are not there yet. We are not finally there yet. But it’s a work in progress. Mr President is working hard, day in and day out, to surmount this country’s insecurity problem, particularly in the North West. It is a work in progress. It is easy to have problems, but it’s not easy to solve the problems.

“And of course, that is not alone. That is not the only reason why we are having these influxes to our party. The performance of our governors. Our governors are doing well, working day in, day out,” he said.

He added that, “The chairman, the national chairman of our party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is leading all the party leaders in the country to bring about these improvements we are witnessing in APC. We are all here as brothers and sisters.

“So let us continue to cooperate amongst ourselves, work amongst ourselves, do all that is humanly possible to bring about the needed development to our people so that our party can grow stronger and stronger.

“So that by 2027, we will not have any problem in making sure that we have the expected victory that we are beginning to see. Because as we speak, it looks as if you don’t have any other political party in the country, or even in the northwest. So it is always said.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted approval for the issuance of all critical regulatory licenses for the Kolmani Integrated Development Projects.

The project is located between Bauchi and Gombe States, where the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) said oil search would resume.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) Senator broke the news said during the flag off the construction of the permanent site for the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy, Alkaleri (BOGAA).

He said the imperative to activate all available oil platforms for increased production, led Tinubu to grant approvals for the issuance of all the Kolmani project’s critical regulatory licenses.

This was contained in a press statement the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor issued on Sunday.

The statement, “During the flag-off ceremony, the Minister explained that the imperative to activate all available oil platforms for increased production, led President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant approvals for the issuance of all critical regulatory licenses for the Kolmani Integrated Development Projects.”

Lokpobiri was quoted as stressing “Our objective is to make every productive oil platform count towards national growth.”

He further highlighted the President’s broader agenda to harness the full potential of Nigeria’s energy sector in driving economic prosperity.

“Mr. President is intentional about transforming our energy landscape into one that fuels industrial growth, creates jobs, and enhances national revenue,” he stated.

Commending Bauchi State for aligning with this national vision, the Minister noted that the establishment of the Academy demonstrates the State’s forward-thinking approach to energy sector participation.

“With this Academy, Bauchi is making a strategic contribution to the development of the human capital needed to drive our sector forward,” he added.

“PTDF has played a critical role in ensuring that our sector is not just productive but also future-ready,” the Minister noted, expressing hope that BOGAA would establish a strong partnership with the PTDF to ensure the success and sustainability of its programs.

In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, thanked the Federal Government for its support and reiterated the State’s commitment to the Academy’s success.

Tinubu restoring access to medicines, reviving abandoned infrastructure projects – ICRC

The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is restoring access to essential medicines in Nigeria’s neglected regions through the launch of MediPool, an initiative under the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja and signed by the Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Ifeanyi Nwoko, the Director General of ICRC, Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, said MediPool represents a significant step in bridging Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure gap.

“With MediPool, President Tinubu is restoring hope to neglected regions by ensuring access to essential medicines—a right, not a privilege, for all Nigerians,” Dr. Ewalefoh declared.

The MediPool initiative is designed to centralize the procurement and distribution of essential medicines, vaccines, and consumables through a high-efficiency Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) under a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

The system is expected to bring greater transparency, cost-effectiveness, and reach to Nigeria’s pharmaceutical supply chain.

According to the ICRC, the platform will focus particularly on rural and hard-to-reach communities, areas that have long faced severe shortages and delays in the delivery of life-saving medical supplies.

By creating a centralized hub that streamlines procurement and ensures timely distribution, MediPool is expected to close longstanding gaps in Nigeria’s public health system.

“This is just the beginning,” Ewalefoh said. “Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Public-Private Partnerships are driving infrastructure delivery across all sectors, ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind.”

In addition to MediPool, Dr. Ewalefoh disclosed that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved two major infrastructure projects that had been delayed for decades — the Ikere Gorge Hydropower Project in Oyo State and the Coastal Fisheries Terminal in Borokiri, Rivers State.

The Ikere Gorge Hydropower Project, first initiated during the Obasanjo military administration in the late 1970s, is being revived under a Finance-Build-Operate-Transfer (FBOT) model. Once completed, the project is expected to generate over 6 megawatts of electricity, supply potable water to communities such as Iseyin and Saki, and support large-scale irrigation for agriculture across the region.

“This long-abandoned project is being brought back to life, and it will play a key role in increasing access to energy and water for both households and commercial purposes,” the ICRC stated.

In Rivers State, the Coastal Fisheries Terminal in Borokiri has also been approved to proceed under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement. The terminal is expected to revitalize Nigeria’s fisheries value chain by introducing cold-chain logistics, reducing post-harvest losses, creating jobs, and enhancing the country’s export capacity in marine products.

“These projects mark a new chapter in Nigeria’s development story. They reflect a commitment to leveraging private sector expertise and financing to drive public infrastructure and improve services nationwide,” Ewalefoh said.

The ICRC noted that these initiatives are in line with President Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on inclusive economic growth, better infrastructure, and improved public services through strategic Public-Private Partnerships.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to providing full regulatory oversight for all PPP projects, ensuring transparency, accountability, value for money, and alignment with international best practices.

According to the ICRC, its role includes monitoring project implementation to ensure that the terms of agreement are met, risks are adequately managed, and that the Nigerian people receive tangible benefits from each partnership.

“The success of these initiatives will depend not only on vision but on rigorous implementation, and the ICRC stands ready to guide these projects every step of the way,” the statement concluded.

Tinubu reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to interfaith dialogue in Vatican meeting

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation in a world increasingly challenged by religious and ideological polarization.

The President made this known following his arrival in Rome on Saturday evening, where he is scheduled to attend the solemn mass, marking the inauguration of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

Upon his arrival, President Tinubu was received by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who hosted him to a private dinner and diplomatic exchange focused on mutual global interests.

“Our dialogue was marked by a spirit of fraternity and a shared vision for the future. We discussed common values such as peace, mutual respect, and global solidarity”, Tinubu wrote on his verified X handle, @officialABAT.

President Tinubu used the opportunity to convey Nigeria’s appreciation for the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and its spiritual engagement with the Nigerian people, many of whom are adherents of the Catholic faith.

“I expressed Nigeria’s deep appreciation for the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and reaffirmed our commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation in an increasingly polarised world,” the President stated.

The interaction with Cardinal Parolin underscores the strategic importance Nigeria places on faith-based diplomacy, especially at a time when global events have accentuated divisions along religious and ethnic lines.

“As always, Nigeria remains a nation open to friendship, grounded in faith, and committed to building bridges of understanding across the world,” Tinubu added.

The President’s visit to the Vatican comes at a time when Nigeria continues to play a prominent role in peacekeeping and religious reconciliation efforts across Africa.

His participation in the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV is seen as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s engagement with the global faith community.

President Tinubu is currently joining other world leaders and dignitaries at the formal inauguration Mass where the newly elected pontiff will begin his tenure following the passing of Pope Francis.

National Chairman of the Party, Dr. Umar Ganduje, said the President remained committed to the development of the North West, the entire northern region and Nigeria by extension.

He said the commitment has been demonstrated through his numerous intervention projects ranging from infrastructure to agriculture and social development across the North.

He described the establishment of the North West Development Commission as a clear indication of the President’s love for the Northwest.

He said: “We have started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel”, and therefore there will be no vacancy in Aso Rock Villa in 2027.

Speaker Abbas, who moved the motion for the endorsement of the President, said the defection of stalwarts of the opposition to the APC was an indication of the growing confidence of Nigerians in the party and President Tinubu.

“To enhance our election efforts, it is crucial to strengthen grassroots mobilization at the local level. Furthermore, as we look to the future, we must continue to integrate and involve more young people and women in the party, as they comprise a significant portion of the population.

“Their involvement is crucial for achieving future political success.”

He added: “At the National Assembly, we are committed to championing legislation aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda, advancing bills on infrastructure financing and development, security reforms, and incentives for the digital economy.

“This support has been pivotal in passing landmark measures, exercising robust oversight over the executive and representing the interests of our people.

“With the 2027 general election approaching, we must intensify grassroots mobilisation, consolidate our legislative gains, and engage new constituencies, especially youth and women, through empowerment programmes.”

As the meeting was winding up, host Governor Sani invited Abbas and Barau to move for the vote of confidence and endorsement of the President.

The motion was seconded by Governor Umar Idris of Kebbi State and followed by voice vote affirming the endorsement.

In a  communique read by Governor Sani, the zone reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and pledged  ‘’full support for President Tinubu’s vision to deliver prosperity, equity, and lasting change for all Nigerians.”

It commended the President for his “purposeful leadership, bold reforms and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress, especially in the North West zone.”

It said: ”Under President Tinubu, security in the North West has significantly improved, enabling farmers to return to their fields and communities to regain peace and stability.

“’Our zone enjoys unprecedented federal representation with 12 ministers, key National Assembly positions, and top security appointments – a clear sign of inclusiveness and recognition.’

“Major infrastructure projects are being completed or are underway across the North West, marking a new era of development in our region.

“APC continues to grow in strength, unity, and national appeal, due to Nigerians’ appreciation of the President and our APC Governors.”

“I will not contest. Why will I contest against someone I’m working for?” he said in response to a question on whether he would join the race if his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), zoned the ticket to the south.

He said he did not know anyone in the opposition who is formidable enough to challenge the President.

“They said they will zone it to the South, let them zone first. When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it,” he said.

On his quarrel with his successor as Rivers State governor, Siminilayi Fubara, Wike said he still regarded the suspended governor as his political son.

“That one is not a battle. He (Fubara) is my boy. He is my son. Why will I fight with him?” he said.

“I’m only fighting against people who want to steal what they did not work for.

“When you don’t defeat them, they will think you… Defeat them to the final stage.

“Now, they are ashamed because they are being defeated. They are the ones pushing Fubara.”
