Local Vehicle Procurement Bill: Roxettes Motors CEO hails Tinubu, Senate

The Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Roxettes Motors, Dr. Kaycee Orji, has commended the Senate for advancing the Local Automotive Industry Patronage Bill, 2025.

The bill mandates Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to procure at least 75% of their official vehicles from Nigerian manufacturers.

Orji said the alignment between the presidency and National Assembly was commendable as the Bill would support the administration’s policies on electric vehicles and CNG systems.

“We are deeply inspired by the unprecedented alignment between the Presidency, the National Assembly, and key agencies like NADDC and CREDICORP.

“This is a defining moment for Nigerian manufacturing. We at Roxettes are excited, ready, and already positioned with CKD capacity, electric vehicles, CNG systems, and end-to-end industrial solutions to support the implementation of these policies.”

The bill aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2025 Industrial Agenda, which includes the Nigeria First Policy, End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Policy, and Credicorp Mobility & Manufacturing Credit Scheme. These policies aim to promote local production, job creation, and economic revival.

  • NEFGAD lauds Tinubu for approving procurement thresholds for MDAs

NEFGAD lauds Tinubu for approving procurement thresholds for MDAs

A leading public procurement advocacy group – Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development (NEFGAD) has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a comprehensive overhaul of public procurement threshold for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under the Federal Government.

The group said the far-reaching reform underscored a strong commitment to transparency, efficiency, and decentralisation in public sector governance.

In a statement signed by its Country Head of Office, Mr. Akingunola Omoniyi the organisation commended the restructuring of contract approval thresholds across the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Ministerial and Parastatal Tenders Boards, and Accounting Officers.

According to the group, this move will streamline the procurement process, enable faster decision-making, and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks.

The organisation added that it will also allow the FEC to refocus on critical national policy issues rather than routine administrative approvals.

“This decision aligns with NEFGAD’s long standing advocacy for the unbundling of contract approval thresholds, which have historically placed disproportionate approval powers in the hands of the Federal Executive Council—an organ that should primarily be concerned with policy direction, not contract approvals,” the statement noted.

NEFGAD particularly lauded the President’s emphasis on transparency, especially the mandatory publication of monthly procurement reports on MDA websites and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) portal.

The group described this as a significant step towards fostering accountability and building public trust.

The organisation also commended the prioritisation of local goods and contractors under the Nigeria First Policy, calling it a forward-thinking initiative to strengthen the national economy and empower indigenous enterprises.

It welcomed the requirement for the use of BPP-accredited trainers for procurement-related training, emphasising that this will bolster capacity building and professionalisation within the public service.

President Tinubu’s reforms, NEFGAD stated, represented a landmark step toward a more efficient, transparent, and inclusive procurement system that truly puts Nigeria first.

“This is the kind of leadership that drives meaningful development and restores public confidence in governance,” the group stated.

  • From debts to freedom; the Tinubu magic wand

From debts to freedom; the Tinubu magic wand

    By Bamidele Atoyebi

It is axiomatic that when the fountain is muddied, you can’t get clean water downstream just like the fish starts rotting from the head. However, what is happening in the political firmament of Nigeria is a reverse logic to those aphorisms.

Like it is argued that individual capacity determines the success and development of a nation in transition like Nigeria, it has held true economically and will soon go round to other sectors of the country.

When Nigerians heard the announcement on Inauguration day of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that subsidy is no more, it evoked mixed feelings from friends and foes. To some, it aligned with the unsteady movement of the announcer while armchair economists dusted up their brains and started tumbling straight from economic abstracts with convoluted propositions of what should or ought to have been done.

In his characteristic style, Tinubu asked for time and understanding, insisting that he knew what he was doing and where he was leading the polity to. As is won’t with new policies, it brought with it the balancer of good which is hardship but Nigerians would have none of that and they started lamentations and cursing the President for the hardship. They forgot that you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and that pain and gain are two sides of one coin which you cannot take one and leave the other.

Fastrack to now where other Governors like line dancers are looking at the footsteps of the lead dancer and taking cues. How has that translated to reality? A look at documents from the Debt Management Office shows that Nigeria is paying off her debts accumulated by several regimes like the International Monetary Fund, IMF which has come out to acknowledge it as true, making people to wonder how come in this era of belt tightening and global tanking of economies.

Some are saying it is a product if the removal of subsidy which had attracted the highest outcry and negative analysis. Its early gains have manifested in debt freedom by Nigeria. Other debts are being serviced and repaid which signposts better days ahead.

Since President Tinubu has led the way to adroit utilisation of resources as well as responsible spending, there is no other way to go for subnationals than to follow suit. The first salvo was fired by Alex Otti of Abia State who said he had reduced the debts of the state without borrowing while also executing multi- billion Naira projects before more statistics started dropping that it was the case of all the states in Nigeria in a collective march towards debt freedom.

    With a bragging right, the government can boast all it wants because there are tangibles to point at as performance indices. As one Tinubu supporter boasted on the internet, “The removal of subsidy has helped us to achieved this;

We were borrowing to pay subsidies, but now, we are paying back all the debts incurred under subsidy.

“No State borrows to finance projects anymore , so the financial liberation is what we have not seen in this country before. We are definitely moving on the right track and hopefully, we will gather enough speed to meet the advanced economies soon.”

A look at the statistics of domestic debt comparison released by relevant Authorities show more than 98 per cent decrease in debts across states in that only three states have increased debts out of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. They are Niger State with 15.40 per cent increase, Enugu with 27.99 percent increase and Lagos with 61.59 percent. The rest of the states all have negative debt increases meaning they are paying back their debts without further borrowings, an unprecedented record in the annals of Nigerian history.

Jigawa state as at 2023 owed N43,132,050,837.37 which it has reduced to N1,329,234,426.88 which means it has paid 96.92% of its debt under Tinubu administration. It is closely followed by Ondo state which had N74,034,439,748.98 but reduced it to N12,876,176,042.46 and  has defrayed 82.61% of theirs. Ebonyi State which had N76,140,911,685.58 reduced theirs to N18,112,026,850.56. By that figure, it has paid 76.21%of it’s debt.

Taraba had N83,129,388,663.90 reduced to N81,387,745,236.16 or 2.10%

The three that added to their debts are Niger State which had N121,954,169,872.21 in 2023 but increases it to N140,739,523,757.12 or 15.40%; Enugu State that had N93,197,207,627.52 and increased it to N119,284,430,106.52 and increased by 27.99% and  Rivers that had N225,585,011,356.83 and increased it to N364,393,017,734.54 or 61.59 %.

The simple explanation to the magic is that Tinubu is clear headed on the problems of the country and has been applying his economic surgical blade with delicate accuracy to removing the cancerous cells that have been stultifying Nigeria’s growth. Since we are still in the second year of the administration, and we are recording these results, there is no doubt that we are going to be in our eldorado soon to shout eureka.

    MKO Abiola’s ally Su-Kazeem knocks Tinubu’s critics

An elder statesman and ally to winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, otherwise known as Su-Kazeem, has knocked some past leaders criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

A statement by Su-Kazeem stated that he has been vindicated going by recent comment by former Minister, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi.

Akinyemi in a viral video called on former ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi and others to stop making unnecessary comments against Tinubu’s administration and allow him to concentrate.

Su-Kazeem said this has been what he has been clamouring for since Tinubu became President.

He expressed surprise at what he described as unneeded and unsolicited advice for Tinubu by the past leaders.

He said: “Atiku Abubakar has continued to show his desperation even at the detriment of the progress and development of Nigeria.

“He behaves as if he has all Nigerians in his pocket with the way he talks and address national issues which ordinarily should be done with selfless and not with selfish interest.”

    Tinubu commits to curbing insurgency

President Bola Tinubu on Friday reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to roundly countering insurgency in the country.

The president gave the assurance when he received a delegation of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria led by Archbishop Chivir Chianson, its General Secretary, on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu, represented by Mr Daniel Bwala, his Special Adviser on Policy Communications, stressed that he would not condone any form of evil against the citizenry.

He said the security agencies were ready with renewed commitment to restore safety and security to every part of the country, and that the fight against insecurity would be holistic.

“This administration is committed to addressing insecurity and will not tolerate any form of evil.

“Crime is crime and has no religious or tribal colouration.

“The security forces have fresh marching orders to deal decisively with all criminal activities.

“We are engaging with state governors to address root causes of insecurity.

“It may exist to a certain degree but rest assured that we are committed to ensuring citizens can pursue their dreams in a secured environment,” Tinubu said.

He stressed the need for a national consensus to deal effectively with the scourge without politicising it.

Tinubu also told the delegation that the economic reforms undertaken by his administration were yielding positive results as revealed by various economic.

He urged the members of the team to continue to support his administration to ensure that the economic progress being witnessed continued.

In his remarks, Chianson said the members of the delegation were at the State House to express their concern on the state of the nation.

He, however, commended Tinubu for the various landmark reforms instituted by his administration aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

The clergyman cited the recent approval of the recruitment and deployment of forest guards to secure the country’s forest reserves.

He said it was a step in the right direction, which would go a long way in checkmating the obnoxious activities of criminal elements operating in the forests.

Chianson also lauded Tinubu for the fairness in his appointments as they were devoid of any religious leaning.

“The Church in Nigeria is impressed with his appointments so far.

“The choice of Sen. George Akume as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, a Christian, was particularly appreciated as a sign of positive change.

“We will continue to support President Tinubu’s administration, as we believe in the Renewed Hope agenda,” Chianson said.

The meeting was also attended by Archbishop James Maljit, Deputy National President North, Archbishop Joseph Jatau Yari, National Vice-President North West, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyeh, Overseer of Benue Province and Bishop David Gyang, Overseer of Plateau Province among others.

President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the procurement of more fire power for the military and given them the marching order for the immediate implementation of new security strategies following the recent surge in terrorism, especially in parts of the north..

The President handed down the directive yesterday during a high-level security meeting at the State House, Abuja with security and intelligence chiefs to review the worsening security situation in Plateau, Benue, Borno and other flashpoints across the country.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who briefed reporters at the end of the meeting, said the President expressed deep concern over the resurgence of violence, which he attributed largely to transnational terrorist pressure across the Sahel region.

“There is a global push by terrorists and jihadists all over the Sahel area, and that pressure is what actually came into Nigeria because of the nature of our borders,” Musa said.

He added: “Mr. President has given directives as to what to do next—for us to intensify our efforts and collaborate with all our sister countries around. It is the porous nature of our borders that is aggravating our issues on the ground.”

The CDS said that all operational theatres across the country have already been reinforced with new equipment while the President recently approved the acquisition of additional air assets to boost the armed forces’ response capacity.

“Equipment has been bought and Mr. President has also given us multiple approvals for air assets and other aspects of security. But it’s not only about the kinetic effort—the non-kinetic aspect is most important too”, he disclosed.

The Defence Chief emphasised that a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach was being adopted, with the President expected to engage state governors on efforts to promote grassroots development and ensure that the dividends of democracy reach vulnerable communities, thereby addressing one of the root causes of insecurity.

“The President is also looking at engaging the governors for their support and buy-in, ensuring that dividends of democracy extend to the communities to help stamp down insecurity,” General Musa said.

Also present at the meeting were National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Director General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi; Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Sadiq Idris Abubakar; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye.

General Musa underscored the importance of unity among the security agencies, stressing that the current approach is built on inter-agency collaboration and a shared commitment to peace.

“You can see we are together—the National Security Adviser, the DG DSS, and all the service chiefs. Members of the armed forces are working in unity, including the police, to make sure that Nigeria is peaceful. That is our mandate, and we are committed to it.”

But he warned against the spread of fake news and sensational social media contents, many of which he said are recycled or foreign videos that do not reflect the current situation in Nigeria.

His words:“There’s a lot of fake news being spread out, making it look worse than it is. Most of the videos being circulated are from other countries or old footage made to look new.

“Why do some individuals feel happy when things go bad in their country? If Nigeria is destroyed, we all go down. So it is important that we all cooperate with the armed forces and security agencies.”

The Defence Chief also reassured residents of Borno, Plateau, and other affected states of the military’s commitment to restoring peace and stability.

He revealed that top military and ministerial officials have recently visited the North-East to strengthen coordination with state governments.

“We were just in the North-East with the ministers. I just came back from Maiduguri. We’re working together with the governors because we know we cannot do it alone. The federal government is doing so much, but states need to come in,” he said.

Abubakar spoke during the induction of two newly acquired Agusta 109S Trekker Helicopters as part of activities marking the 61st Anniversary of the NAF, yesterday in Abuja.

“These acquisitions will significantly bolster our precision strike, ground attack, and air mobility capabilities, to support our counter terrorism, and counterinsurgency operations.

“The dynamic security landscape of our nation demands an agile, well-equipped and responsive Air Force capable of rapid deployment across multiple theatres.

“This reality underscores the need for continuous investments in modern platforms to bolster the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity to deliver air power across all spectrums of warfare.” he said.

The acquisition of the Agusta Westland 109 Trekker helicopters, he said, was a significant leap in the Air Force’s modernisation efforts.

Abubakar said NAF had from 2024 to date received a total of nine brand new aircraft into its inventory, comprising four C-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360 aircraft, as well as the two Agusta 109 trekkers helicopters being inducted.

Vice President Kashim Shettima who inducted the Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters into the inventory of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on behalf of President Tinubu praised the NAF for its commitment to advancing national security objectives.

He recalled the NAF’s engagements in countries such as The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Mali, describing the Air Force as a “cynosure of operational excellence” and a source of pride for Nigeria.

He said: “Today’s ceremony marks another milestone in our unwavering commitment to strengthen our Armed Forces, particularly the Air Force, towards a more secured country.

“This acquisition, made alongside platforms such as the Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, the T-129 ATAK helicopters, and the King Air 360i aircraft, underscores our resolve to prioritise fleet modernisation and the welfare of our men and women in uniform.”

He reiterated that security remained a top priority of his administration and assured the military of continued support in line with the eight priority areas of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, “neither economic prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity.

Tinubu also stressed the need to preserve and promote cultural values, stating that the federal government remains open to meaningful participation from all sectors of society.

The President said his administration would continue working with traditional institutions to implement policies to protect and prosper citizens.

“The peace and stability of our nation requires inclusiveness. This job is not one you can do alone. We have to pull ourselves together to build a nation of prosperity.

“Our priority is still education and medicare. We want to uplift education and cultural values. Our door is open for participation,” he stated.

The President said traditional institutions remain integral to the country’s development and called for more support in implementing policies that directly impact people’s livelihoods.

President Tinubu congratulated the Alaafin for his ascendancy to the historic throne, assuring the royal father of his prayers and support.

“It is a great joy for me and a great honour. Your ascendancy to the throne of your fathers is historic. It is the will of God and the heart of the people.

“I am following up on your foresight for development, your humility, and the fact that you uphold the traditions of your people.

“The inherited tradition is the making of the Almighty God. Your ascendancy to the throne, like my becoming the president, is the divine will of the Almighty God,” he said.

In his remarks, Alaafin assured the President of the traditional council’s support in delivering his mandate to the people.

“Today, I speak not just as the custodian of culture and tradition but as a voice for my people, who are deeply honoured by the audience you have granted us here at the heart of the national leadership.

“Your gracious reception is more than protocol. It is a mark of your character, statesmanship and enduring regard for the traditional institutions.

“The people of Oyo remember your journey as a man who rose through the crucible of political struggle with unmatched courage and charity.

“You won many hearts as an activist, strategist, bridge builder and now as the nation’s foremost leader.”

The monarch said Nigerians look up to the President for a new direction.

They thanked President Tinubu for trusting and believing in the capacity of Nyesom Wike and giving him such peculiar tasks to oversea the FCT as the Minister.

While responding, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike reaffirmed the reality of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, declaring that the visible impact of development projects across FCT’s satellite towns proves that hope is no longer a slogan but what they are experiencing.

According to him; “We’re happy when the people are happy. When people’s happiness is tied to the government’s performance, it energizes us, telling us that we’re doing the right thing. It’s not my statement, but that of a resident who said, ‘Indeed, the Renewed Hope Agenda is at work.’ That tells you something”.

The Minister, while inspecting the A2 to Pai Road, which has now been fitted with streetlights despite being in a rural setting, emphasized the significance of purposeful leadership.

“This is the result of the right leadership. Mr. President has shown leadership, and we’re only following his vision. There’s no magic to it. When the leader is focused and provides support, those working with him have no excuse not to deliver,” he said.

While at Aguma Palace road  construction, the Minister was greeted with cheers and overwhelming enthusiasm from residents, including traders and community leaders, who expressed appreciation for the improved infrastructure.

Wike further explained that, “What we saw in Aguma Palace was incredible,” Wike recalled. “The people were shouting, jubilating. That alone tells you that hope is working.”

Responding to concerns about the quality of projects being executed, especially in rural areas, Wike was emphatic, “How bad would it feel if you weren’t getting quality jobs? You’ve paid money and they’re delivering what you need of course, you’ll be happy,” he said. “The contractors know there is no room for substandard work.”
