Tinubu seeks Senate’s confirmation for Abe, Adeniji as NUPRC, NMDPRA board chairmen

    • 21 nominees on President’s request list for oil and gas regulators’ boards

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Senator Magnus Abe, and an energy expert, Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji, as board chairmen of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The President also asked the Senate to confirm their appointments.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President, in two separate letters to the Senate, sought confirmation of 21 nominees to serve on the boards of the two key petroleum-sector regulators established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

For the NUPRC, President Tinubu nominated Abe, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District for two terms, as the agency’s board chairman.

Abe is a former board member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and currently chairs the National Agency for the Great Green Wall.

Other nominees for the NUPRC board as non-executive commissioners are: Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi, a former chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Kaduna State, and Mr. Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former deputy director of the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

The President also nominated seven executive commissioners for the NUPRC.

They are: Muhammed Sabo Lamido (Finance); Edu Inyang (Exploration and Acreage); Justin Ezeala (Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning); Henry Darlington Oki (Development and Production); Indabawa Bashari Alka (Corporate Services and Administration); Mahmood Tijani (Health, Safety and Environment); and Ms. Olayemi Adeboyejo as Secretary and Legal Adviser.

While Lamido and Adeboyejo were first appointed in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, and Alka in 2023 by President Tinubu, Inyang, Ezeala, Tijani, Babalola, and Jezhi are new nominees.

In the second letter, the President nominated Adeniji, a lawyer with over 30 years’ experience in energy and natural resources, as chairman of the NMDPRA board.

He is currently a managing partner at ENR Advisory.

Also nominated as non-executive members of the NMDPRA board are Chief Kenneth Kobani, a former Minister of State for Trade and ex–Secretary to the Rivers State Government, and Mrs. Asabe Ahmed.

Other nominees include Abiodun Adeniji (Executive Director, Finance); Francis Ogaree (Executive Director, Hydrocarbon); Oluwole Adama (Executive Director, Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure); and Dr. Mustapha Lamorde (Executive Director, Corporate Services and Administration).

Additional proposed members are: Yahaya Nasamu Yinusa (Executive Director, Distribution Systems); Adeyemi Murtala Aminu (Executive Director, Corporate Services); Ms Modie Ogechukwu (Executive Director, Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning); and Barrister Olawale Dawodu as Board Secretary and Legal Adviser.

President Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and approve the nominations expeditiously, noting that the requests followed the recent confirmation of the chief executive officers of the two agencies.

The Senate had confirmed Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as CEO of the NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as CEO of the NMDPRA.

According to the statement, the President urged all appointees and nominees “to discharge their duties and responsibilities professionally as regulators of the oil and gas sectors”.

Avoid divisive politics, align with Tinubu, APC forum advises Muftwang

The North Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has called on Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang to jettison divisive political tendencies and align his administration with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, following his recent defection to the ruling party.

The Forum said Muftwang’s entry into the APC must signal a clear break from policies and influences that promote ethnic or religious division, urging him to adopt inclusive governance and work closely with the Federal Government to address Plateau State’s security and development challenges.

The Forum, in a statement issued on Monday by its Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, said the admonition had become imperative as Governor Caleb Muftwang’s defection provides a fresh opportunity for him to reposition his administration on the principles of unity, fairness and development, while deliberately distancing himself from individuals whose actions, it said, had previously fuelled division in the state.

Zazzaga, a member of the APC campaign council during the 2023 general election, noted that the Forum, which comprises APC stakeholders from the six North Central states, is well placed to offer such advice, having actively championed Muftwang’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the APC.

He added that the Forum believed the governor’s leadership capacity would be better harnessed within the ruling party, stressing that his defection was in the overall interest of Plateau State and the North Central region.

The Forum noted that during Muftwang’s time in the PDP, some officials around his administration were perceived to be advancing narrow interests that undermined cohesion in the state.

It said one of the motivations behind its campaign for his defection was to see him operate within a political environment that discourages such tendencies.

It urged the governor to be deliberate in selecting his team and to work only with individuals genuinely committed to the development and stability of Plateau State.

The APC group also called on Muftwang to govern as a leader for all citizens of the state, stressing that no community or group should feel excluded from governance or denied access to the dividends of democracy.

On security, the Forum advised the governor to strengthen cooperation with President Tinubu and relevant federal security agencies, noting that closer alignment with the centre would improve coordination and response to the security challenges confronting Plateau State.

It said working closely with the President would also enable the state to benefit more effectively from federal interventions and development programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Beyond policy direction, the Forum urged Muftwang to assert firm control over his administration and resist undue influence from political godfathers or individuals seeking to exert control over government decisions.

It said the governor’s defection to the APC should mark a turning point that allows him to govern with confidence and independence, free from external pressures that could undermine service delivery.

The Forum disclosed that it faced intimidation and resistance while campaigning for Muftwang’s defection, particularly from individuals who feared that his move would affect their political ambitions. Despite this, it said it remained resolute because of its confidence in the governor’s leadership qualities.

It expressed optimism that Muftwang’s presence in the APC would strengthen the party in Plateau State and contribute significantly to its electoral fortunes in the North Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Forum recalled that it was among the first political groups to endorse President Tinubu for a second term, adding that its support for Muftwang’s defection was also informed by its commitment to consolidating APC support across the region.

It said the governor’s popularity and political base in Plateau State would be crucial to advancing the party’s objectives and delivering stability, unity and development to the people.

  • Hunt down terrorists, Tinubu orders

    Hunt down terrorists, Tinubu orders

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a manhunt for terrorists responsible for the killing of scores of civilians and the abduction of women and children in Niger State.

The directive followed coordinated terrorist attacks on communities in Agwarra and Borgu Local Government Areas of the state.

No fewer than 42 people were killed in brutal raids on villages and a busy market.

Security forces also intensified counter-terrorism operations that led to the killing of over 50 bandits across Kano, Katsina and Kogi states.

The Niger attack occurred on Saturday at Kasuwan Daji market in Sukumbara village.

Reacting yesterday, President Tinubu condemned the killings and kidnappings, describing them as a “grave assault on innocent Nigerians.”

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President directed the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to track down the attackers and ensure the immediate rescue of abducted victims.

He said: “These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must face the full consequences of their criminal actions.

“No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down.

“They, and all those who aid, abet or enable them, will be caught and brought to justice.”

President Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of Niger State, assuring them of the Federal Government’s resolve to restore peace.

He directed security agencies to scale up operations around vulnerable communities, particularly those close to forests used as terrorist hideouts.

The President said: “These times demand our humanity. We must stand together as one people and confront these monsters in unison.

“United, we can and must defeat them and reclaim peace in our communities.”

The terrorists were said to be fleeing intensified military pressure from air strikes in the Northwest.

They stormed the community around 4:30 p.m., firing sporadically, burning stalls, looting shops and abducting residents, including schoolchildren.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers came from the Kainji Lake National Park forest along Kabe District, spreading terror across villages in Agwarra and Borgu council areas.

Local accounts initially put the death toll at 42, with residents claiming that 37 people were killed in Kasuwan Daji near Papiri, while five others died in Kaima village.

A joint security assessment later confirmed 30 fatalities, with several people still missing.

The terrorists also attacked a Catholic mission house and school in Sukumbara village, destroying property and stealing motorcycles and cash.

A resident said: “The government and security agencies should come to our aid. These terrorists have been coming out of the forest for about a week now, wreaking havoc.

“Some of the abducted children are pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri.”

Confirming the attack on the Catholic mission, the Director of Communications of the Kontagora Diocese, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kabirat, said the parish priest narrowly escaped abduction.

“They came to abduct the parish priest, but he escaped before they gained access to his quarters.

“They destroyed religious items, carted away two motorcycles and cash worth over N200,000, and abducted villagers, including children,” he said.

Another villager said many communities had fled into the bush out of fear.

“Some villagers are now sleeping in the forest because of continued terrorist activities,” he said.

The terrorists struck in the Agwarra local government in November when they abducted pupils, teachers and workers of the St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri. They were freed from the abductors custody about a month after.

    Bago: attack ‘cruel’

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, described the attacks as “cruel and nefarious”.

He lamented that victims were Muslims and Christians from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

“It is disturbing and worrying to begin the year with such unfortunate incidents,” the governor said through his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Obed Nuhu Nana.

He said the attackers were terrorists fleeing Kainji Lake National Park towards Kebbi and Rijau areas, allegedly out of fear of further military strikes.

“They killed innocent traders, attacked a police outpost in Shafacci village and a Catholic missionary school in Sukumbara, carting away motorcycles and destroying property,” the statement said.

Bago assured residents that a joint security task force was already trailing the terrorists with a view to rescuing abducted victims.

    Abiodun demands justice

Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, condemned the massacre, describing it as “callous, senseless and a crime against humanity.”

He commiserated with Bago and the people of Niger State, urging security agencies to hunt down and prosecute the perpetrators.

“This cowardly onslaught on innocent citizens going about their lawful business represents a stain on our national conscience,” Abiodun said.

“The perpetrators must be completely crushed with all the resources available to the Nigerian state.”

Military strikes back in Kano, Katsina

As outrage mounted over the Niger killings, the Nigerian military recorded significant successes against terrorists in the North-West and North-Central.

Troops of the Joint Task Force, supported by the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yamma, neutralised at least 23 bandits fleeing Kano State after coordinated attacks on Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas.

According to the Nigerian Army, the bandits launched the attacks late Thursday night into Friday morning but were repelled by ground troops.

Intelligence later revealed that the fleeing terrorists regrouped in Karaduwa village, Matazu LGA of Katsina State, to bury their dead.

“A precision air strike was conducted, resulting in the neutralisation of at least 23 terrorists,” said Major Zubairu Babatunde, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade.

Several weapons and motorcycles were destroyed in the strike

In Kogi State, troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army killed three bandits and arrested a suspected logistics supplier during coordinated patrols in Kabba-Bunu and Yagba West Local Government Areas.

Acting on intelligence, troops laid ambushes along known bandit routes, recovering AK-47 rifles, ammunition and locally fabricated weapons.

The arrested suspect, identified as Sunday Adedotun, was found with supplies allegedly meant for bandits.

“These operations underscore sustained pressure on criminal networks and their enablers,” the Army said.

    Army destroys armoury in Taraba

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) intercepted the wife of a notorious criminal kingpin, John Gata, and neutralised a major arms cache in Amadu Village, Takum Local Government Area, Taraba.

A credible source at Army Headquarters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that actionable intelligence indicated the suspect’s wife was moving from Amadu Village through Wukari, Kyado, and Zaki-Biam toward Gboko.

The source said the troops of Sub Sector 1A promptly established a snap roadblock at Zaki-Biam, successfully intercepting the woman without incident.

He said the suspect later led troops to the criminal’s hidden armoury, where they recovered 13 AK-47 rifles, 38 magazines, 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and four hand grenades.

According to him, the facility was subsequently destroyed to deny further use by the criminal network.

He confirmed that troops returned safely to base and noted that the security situation in the area remained calm but unpredictable, with civil-military relations cordial.

“Troops’ morale and operational readiness continue to remain high as fighting and confidence-building patrols persist in the region,” he said

The military high command lauded troops for their professionalism and assured Nigerians of continued aggressive operations.

The Army urged citizens to provide timely intelligence, stressing that collaboration remains vital to defeating terrorism.

    Atiku, Obi seek action

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the attacks, calling for urgent and decisive action to halt the worsening insecurity.

In a statement, Atiku described the attacks as heinous and deeply troubling.

He said the brazen assault on defenceless rural communities underscored the fragile security situation in parts of the country.

The former vice president extended condolences to the victims’ families and expressed solidarity with the people and government of Niger State.

He urged security agencies to act swiftly to secure the safe and unconditional release of all abducted persons, particularly the schoolchildren, and to restore confidence in affected communities.

Atiku stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost duty of any government, calling for a strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.

Obi condemned the violence and renewed his call for leadership anchored on unity, truth, accountability and compassion.

He said Nigeria must confront insecurity with honesty and resolve, noting that leadership thrives on trust and transparency.

He urged authorities to place the welfare of citizens, especially the poor, weak and vulnerable, at the centre of national priorities, stressing that a nation’s true measure lies in the dignity and safety it offers its people.

Obi also called for a shift in national priorities toward investing in hospitals, schools, jobs and productivity, rather than waste and extravagance.

He said addressing insecurity requires not just force, but a recommitment to justice, accountability and shared sacrifice.

…President condemns Kasuwan Daji attack, vows justice for victims

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate tracking and apprehension of terrorists behind the latest wave of killings and abductions in parts of Niger State, directing security agencies to rescue all abducted victims without delay.

The President issued the directive on Sunday following reports that about 42 persons were slaughtered in coordinated attacks on communities in Agwarra and Borgu council areas of Niger State, with a yet-to-be-ascertained number of residents, including women and children, kidnapped by the terrorists.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu instructed the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure that the perpetrators are hunted down and brought swiftly to justice.

He also mandated all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the immediate rescue of the abducted victims.

The President was reacting specifically to the deadly attack on the Kasuwan Daji community, which he strongly condemned, describing the killings and abductions as a grave assault on innocent Nigerians.

“These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must, therefore, face the full consequences of their criminal actions. No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down. They, and all those who aid, abet, or enable them in any form, will be caught and brought to justice,” the President declared.

According to the statement, the attackers were suspected to be terrorists fleeing pressure from military operations in the North-West, following reported air strikes around Christmas Eve.

President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed, as well as to the government and people of Niger State, assuring them that the Federal Government would not relent in restoring peace to the affected areas.

He further directed security agencies to scale up operations around vulnerable communities, particularly those located near forests that have served as hideouts for criminal elements.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to national unity and security, the President urged Nigerians to remain calm, united, and resolute, warning against divisive rhetoric that could undermine collective efforts at a critical time.

“These times demand our humanity. We must stand together as one people and confront these monsters in unison. United, we can and must defeat them, deny them any sanctuary. We must reclaim the peace and security of these attacked communities,” he said.

The President’s latest order comes amid renewed concerns over security in parts of Niger State, as authorities work to prevent further attacks and ensure the safe return of those abducted.

APC chieftain rallies support for Tinubu’s Tax reform

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Akintade Olayisade, has called on Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform agenda, describing it as a bold step toward strengthening the nation’s economy and improving governance.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, Olayisade said the reforms were timely and aimed at tackling persistent fiscal challenges such as revenue leakages, weak tax administration, and the country’s overreliance on oil revenue.

The Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) in Ekiti State explained that the initiative would help to broaden the tax base, improve transparency, and create a more efficient and equitable tax system capable of driving sustainable development.

Olayisade noted that enhanced revenue generation would enable the government to adequately fund key sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and social welfare, with positive effects on citizens’ living standards.

He said that effective implementation of the reforms would help reduce economic inequality, encourage voluntary compliance, and create a predictable tax environment that could attract local and foreign investment.

Olayisade, who expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, said the tax reform, if properly executed, would lay a solid foundation for long-term economic stability and inclusive growth.

He urged tax authorities to apply the reforms with professionalism and sensitivity, particularly in protecting small businesses, artisans, and low-income earners.

He called on Nigerians to embrace the reforms and comply with tax regulations, noting that active civic participation was crucial to national development.

The decision was announced by the chairman of the congress, Senator George Sekibo, during Wike’s “thank you” visit to Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Sekibo described the ongoing rift between Fubara and Wike as unfortunate but stressed that the Ijaw people remain appreciative of political support and goodwill.

He recalled Wike’s role in facilitating Fubara’s emergence as governor, noting that the then-candidate enjoyed widespread backing across the state, including from the Ijaw ethnic nationality.

“Ijaw people are very grateful people. Please do not look at him and think we are all ungrateful,” Sekibo said. “That is why we have abandoned him and decided to follow you. You have done so much for the Ijaw people in Rivers State. Whatever you say we should do is what we will do.”

He assured Wike of the full support of the Ijaw people and pledged their loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the minister as a dependable ally who has consistently stood by the ethnic group.

CHRICED urges Tinubu to implement Oronsaye report

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has tasked President Bola Tinubu on the implementation of the Oronsaye report to reduce the cost of governance.

The Oronsaye Report recommended the scrapping of some government agencies with similar operations to reduce the cost of governance.

Speaking at a new year media briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Executive Director of CHRICED, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, lamented the continued neglect of the Oronsaye report, saying its failure to be implemented reflected a lack of political will to reduce the cost of governance.

Zikirullahi stated, “The Oronsaye Report — a long-standing blueprint for reducing the cost of governance — remained buried under political convenience. Instead of streamlining government, new agencies, committees, and appointments multiplied, consuming scarce resources that should have been directed toward lifting citizens out of poverty.

“This contradiction is not just irresponsible — it is immoral. A government that asks the poor to endure hardship while expanding its own privileges is a government that has lost its moral compass. Nigeria cannot continue to bleed resources into a system designed to enrich the few at the expense of the many. The people deserve leadership that sacrifices first, spends wisely, and governs with conscience.”

Speaking on democracy, Zikirullahi said off-cycle elections in 2025 exposed the fragility of Nigeria’s electoral system, citing allegations of voter suppression, violence and manipulation.

According to the CHRICED boss, many local government elections were reduced to “coronations” for ruling parties, undermining public trust.

Zikirullahi expressed concern over what he described as an accelerated drift toward a one-party state, pointing to mass defections of opposition lawmakers and governors to the ruling party.

According to him, the trend has weakened accountability, endangered judicial independence and fuelled public disillusionment.

“This is not speculative; it is observable and dangerous,” he said, warning that Nigeria risks becoming a democracy only in form, not substance.

On insecurity, Zikirullahi said Nigerians remained under siege despite huge budgetary allocations to defence, with kidnappings, banditry and violent crime persisting across the country.

He said communities had been displaced, farms abandoned and businesses shut down, adding that security must go beyond slogans to tangible action.

The CHRICED boss decried what he described as a shrinking civic space, alleging that peaceful protesters, journalists and activists faced harassment and intimidation in 2025.

“A democracy without dissent is a democracy in name only,” he said, insisting that civic freedoms were non-negotiable and central to accountability.

Zikirullahi said Nigeria now faced defining choices in 2026, urging leaders to show courage by reducing the cost of governance, reforming key institutions, strengthening the electoral process and protecting civic rights.

He also called on citizens to transform resilience into action by holding leaders accountable and refusing to surrender their democratic power.

“The message of 2025 is clear,” he said. “The people are suffering, the system is failing, and silence is no longer an option.”

He, however, maintained that hope was not lost, saying Nigerians had survived the worst and could still build a just and dignified society if collective resolve replaced apathy.
