Tinubu hails NRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji, on birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, on his birthday, commending his leadership and reforms at the country’s foremost revenue institution.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Adedeji’s stewardship of the 83-year-old agency, citing the introduction of fresh ideas, adoption of global best practices, automation of systems, and sustained upskilling of staff as key drivers of improved performance.

“I salute the NRS Chairman for his visionary and charismatic dedication in restructuring, aligning, and managing the revenue profile of the country,” the President said.

According to Tinubu, Adedeji recorded a historic milestone by meeting national revenue targets in the third quarter of 2025, an outcome he said contributed to economic stimulation and broader prospects for prosperity.

The President also highlighted Adedeji’s role in advancing the National Single Window, a federal digital platform designed to streamline import and export processes, enhance transparency, and reduce cargo clearance timelines from about 21 days to one week.

Tinubu noted that the initiative has been pivotal to trade facilitation and efficiency at Nigeria’s ports, aligning the country with international standards in customs and border administration.

Adedeji’s professional background spans the public and private sectors.

He previously served as a senior management executive at Procter & Gamble, Commissioner of Finance in Oyo State, and Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, where he established the National Sugar Institute.

Before he was appointed chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service in September 2023, Adedeji also served as Special Adviser to the President on Revenue.

President Tinubu prayed for continued good health, wisdom, and strength for the revenue chief, urging him to sustain his service to the nation in pursuit of fiscal stability and growth.

Adeyanju commends Tinubu over Oyedepo’s appointment as director of public prosecutions

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has commended President Bola Tinubu over the appointment of Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In a statement on Thursday, Adeyanju described the appointment as a positive step toward strengthening the rule of law and reforming Nigeria’s justice sector.

He said Oyedepo’s “demonstrated independence of mind” makes him well-suited for a position that plays a central role in the administration of justice.

“By entrusting such a sensitive office to a seasoned professional, the President has shown that reform of the justice sector can be driven by capacity and respect for due process,” Adeyanju said.

According to him, the decision signals a commitment to professionalism and could help rebuild public confidence in the prosecution system.

“It is a step in the right direction and one that, if sustained, can help restore faith in public prosecutions as a tool for justice,” he added.

Adeyanju concluded that the appointment “deserves to be applauded,” urging that merit-based decisions continue to guide key appointments in the justice sector.

Tinubu’s painful reforms prevented Nigeria’s economic collapse — Tunde Lemo

A former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Tunde Lemo, has said Nigeria would have slipped into bankruptcy without the difficult but necessary economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on ‘Frontline’, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese Ijebu, and monitored on Thursday, Lemo said the economy is gradually stabilising and that the country is now “seeing light at the end of the tunnel” after a challenging reform period.

The veteran banker described the Nigerian economy as resilient, citing declining inflation rates, improved exchange rate stability, and easing food pressures towards the end of 2025.

“We thank God because we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. The economy is resilient,” he said.

Lemo acknowledged that prices remain high but noted that both headline and food inflation have been consistently trending downward. He said December 2025 marked a significant turning point, as Nigerians no longer had to queue for food, attributing this development partly to the removal of fuel subsidy.

“For the first time in December, we didn’t need to queue up for food. Those who bought right will tell you prices were about 20 percent cheaper than the previous year,” he stated.

He maintained that the reforms introduced from the first day of President Tinubu’s administration are already yielding tangible results despite the initial shocks.

“So you can see that the reform that Mr President started with on his day of inauguration, we are already reaping the benefits,” Lemo added.

“Yes, subsidy has been taken away, there were price spikes when that happened, but that has brought in sufficient products for us, so much so now that we don’t have to be running helter-skelter and looking for wealth. And then of course, prices are trending downwards.”

While defending the new tax regime and dismissing claims by many Nigerians that the timing is wrong, Lemo said, “When will it be the right time to pay tax? It is only in Nigeria that people do not want to pay tax but want the government to provide everything.”

He argued that taxation is essential to governance and warned against excessive borrowing or central bank financing, which fuels inflation. “The government largely spends tax money on other crimes. If we don’t pay tax, where do we expect funding to come from?” he asked.

Lemo added that traders with annual turnover below N100 million are fully exempt from paying tax. Would a woman selling pepper by the roadside make N100 million a year? The new tax law protects the poor more than the rich. The elites are the most vocal in this criticism. The poor don’t even have access to these conversations. The elites are using them as mouthpieces,” he stressed.

Defeating Tinubu in 2027 won’t be easy, Labour chief tells ADC

Anambra State’s Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in last year’s election, George Moghalu, has counselled opposition platform, the coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other opposition parties, that defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 will not be a tea party.

Moghalu, who was a National Auditor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before he defected to LP in 2025, noted that defeating an incumbent requires more than just coming together to form a party or coalition.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Abuja, the LP chieftain noted that the fragmentation within the rank and file of the opposition parties ahead the 2027 general election had denied them the cohesion required to pose a formidable challenge against the incumbent.

Apparently dismissing the coalition against President Tinubu, the former Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) said the opposition would require “unity of purpose, sacrifice and collective resolve” to defeat the governing party.

Moghalu said: “Let me repeat what I have consistently said: removing an incumbent is not a tea party. The only way you can remove an incumbent or present a credible and formidable opposition is when there is unity of purpose among opposition political parties and leaders.”

Going the memory lane, the Anambra-born politician recalled how the ruling APC emerged through the merger of several opposition parties to defeat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Prior to 2015, Mogahlu recalled how opposition parties lost elections as they operated independently, despite fielding formidable candidates against the ruling PDP then.

“We presented (Muhammadu) Buhari in 2003 and 2007, and he lost. He ran again in 2011 on the platform of CPC and lost because the opposition was fragmented. Each party had its own support base, and the PDP had the advantage,” he noted.

Moghalu added: “It was only after the amalgamation of forces — including the ACN, CPC, ANPP, a faction of APGA and the DPN — that a formidable opposition platform emerged.

“It was not just a merger or an alliance. It was a case of everyone dropping personal ambition and ego. That was what produced the APC and the eventual defeat of the PDP.”

The LP chieftain explained that as long as the opposition parties remained divided, to dislodge the incumbent in 2027 would be a mirage, as the ruling party will continue to dominate.

He argued that the people, and not the politicians, stand to gain when a strong opposition is in place.

“When the opposition is formidable, the incumbent sits up. Governance improves. It is the people that benefit, not opposition leaders,” he said.

Aggrieved ex-police officers lobby Tinubu for reinstatement

Some aggrieved police officers have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to comply with a judgment of the National Industrial Court (NIC) ordering their reinstatement after an alleged forceful and premature retirement.

The affected officers are members of Courses 33, 34, and 35 (Force Entrants) of the Police Academy, who joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1996, 1999, and 2000.

The officers had approached the NIC to challenge their compulsory retirement before attaining the statutory 35 years in service.

In a judgment delivered on April 19, 2022, Justice Oyewumi Oyebiola ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Police Service Commission (PSC) and Force Secretary to reinstate the affected officers.

The court also restrained the defendants from compulsorily retiring them.

However, nearly three years after the judgment, the officers said the police authorities were yet to comply with the order.

However, in a letter to President Tinubu, their lawyer, Mr Adetoye Adejola, stated that the officers appealed to the President to intervene and ensure the implementation of the court judgment.

In the petition, entitled, “Re: Petition on non-implementation of the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/281/2021 between CSP Egong Egwu Egong & 3 Ors Vs. Police Service Commission & 2 Ors delivered on 19th April 2022, and a call to save the soul of members of Courses 33, 34, and 35 (Force Entrants) of the Police Academy”, the officers said despite the judgment, the police authorities allegedly stopped the payment of salaries to the officers, forced some into retirement, and rendered others still in service redundant by failing to assign them duties.

Commending President Tinubu for his recent directive withdrawing police officers attached to VIPs and redeploying them to frontline policing, they argued that the reinstated officers could help bridge manpower gaps in the force.

“These officers, many of whom are still agile and possess extensive operational and leadership experience, remain valuable assets to the nation,” the letter said.

The officers appealed to the president to order the immediate enforcement of the NIC judgment and recall the affected officers to service, particularly at a time of heightened insecurity across the country.

Speaking with journalists, Chairman of Oyo Central Senatorial District APC, Joshua Oyebamiji, said party leaders had reached a resolution to work for President Tinubu. He added that state leaders would operate as a unified bloc ahead of the 2027 polls.

Oyebamiji said stakeholders in the party had agreed to prioritise collective objectives over personal interests, noting that internal divisions were now a thing of the past.

He said: “We are here for two purposes. First, to tell the world and the people of Oyo State that APC is united. We are now one family, and that is why this is called a unity rally. Second, we are here to express our support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027. APC in Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency supports his second-term bid.”

Other speakers echoed the same sentiments.

In his remarks, Senator Folarin described the APC as the political platform capable of steering Nigeria to progress. State chairman Alhaji Olaide Abas reaffirmed that the party remains united and urged members to work diligently for the victory of President Tinubu and others in the general election 2027.

Oppositions against Tinubu getting more confused, 2027 victory certain—Fadahunsi

Senator Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East) on Wednesday said opposition parties and coalitions against President Bola Tinubu are increasingly divided and disoriented ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a decisive victory because of the reforms and prioritising the welfare of the citizens.

Fadahunsi spoke while distributing 20,000 bags of rice and money to the vulnerable in his district.

According to him, President Tinubu has demonstrated capacity and delivered good governance for the people. The reforms he introduced are banishing hardship and creating hope which he christened his campaign in 2023, Renewed Hope.

“He is so deliberate about the infrastructure drive which the people of my district will start enjoying part of it with the ongoing construction of Ibadan/Ife/Ibadan expressway.”

“State and local governments are collecting increased allocations every month. I am sure that when the autonomy is fully implemented, Nigerians will be greatly relieved. Speaking about the food distribution, he said: “As one of the crusaders of Renewed Hope Agenda, I am resolute to tackle hunger in my district, which is why I am distributing 20,000 bags of rice and money running into millions for vulnerable citizens.

Tinubu’s economic, governance reforms commendable – NYF

The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) on Wednesday commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as bold and transformative reforms aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s economy and strengthening the nation’s governance framework.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Sama Musa, the group said President Tinubu’s administration, despite operating in a period of unprecedented challenges, has prioritized long-term stability, growth and prosperity for Nigerians through far-reaching policy decisions.

According to the NYF, the removal of fuel subsidies, though initially difficult for citizens, represents a critical step towards fiscal responsibility and sustainable development.

Musa said, “This decisive action, while initially difficult for many Nigerians, is a necessary step towards building a more resilient economy that is less dependent on oil revenues. The liberalization of the foreign exchange market and the unification of exchange rates have brought much-needed stability to the Naira.

“These steps are crucial in attracting foreign investment and enhancing the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses on the global stage. Furthermore, the introduction of new tax laws under the 2025 Acts has simplified tax administration, providing relief for low earners and incentivizing technological innovation through support for startups.

“These measures are vital for generating revenue, reducing our reliance on oil, and creating a more diversified economy.

Infrastructure development is another cornerstone of President Tinubu’s reforms. The ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway are set to enhance national connectivity, reduce logistics costs, and stimulate economic activities across regions.

“The AKK Gas Pipeline initiative promises to revolutionize our energy system, ensuring that Nigeria harnesses its vast natural resources to meet the energy needs of its citizens and industries.”

NYF applauded reforms in the Federal Civil Service, particularly the emphasis on rewards, recognition and mentoring, which it said would promote excellence and accountability in public service.

The group also commended improved border management and digital immigration processes, including the introduction of e-visas and the Advanced Passenger Information (API) system, describing them as innovative steps that prioritize efficiency and national security.

Musa added, “The administration’s commitment to social welfare is evident in the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which aims to support students in pursuing their educational dreams.

“Moreover, youth empowerment programs such as the Leadership Empowerment and Employment Program (LEEP), the Jubilee Fellows, and the 3 million Tech Talent (3MTT) initiative are commendable efforts to harness the potential of Nigeria’s youth and equip them with the skills necessary for success in a rapidly changing world.

“While we acknowledge these positive strides, it is imperative to address the challenges that accompany such sweeping reforms. The surge in inflation, which has exceeded 34%, and the rising cost of living are legitimate concerns that impact the daily lives of Nigerians.”

He urged the federal government to implement targeted interventions to cushion the effects of the reforms on vulnerable populations.

The NYF aligned with the Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace, expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome current economic challenges through resilience and collective effort.

“We believe that the reforms initiated by President Tinubu will lead to an economic turning point after 2024, attracting renewed investment and stabilizing the economy for future generations,” the statement said.

The group concluded by commending President Tinubu for his courage and vision, while calling on Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms, engage in constructive dialogue and work collectively towards building a prosperous and peaceful nation.

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and a frontline aspirant for Akure North/South Federal Constituency seat, Mr. Olusola Agbi, has called on party members to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the party launches its nationwide electronic membership registration (e-registration).

In line with the directives from the APC National Headquarters in Abuja, Agbi emphasised the importance of active participation in the e-registration process, describing it as a strategic step to modernise the party’s membership database, foster greater transparency and build a stronger, more cohesive organisation.

He advised members to embrace the initiative, noting it would enhance direct engagement between the party leadership and grassroots members.

This, Agbi said, would eliminate intermediaries and ensure eligible individuals gained seamless access to government empowerment programmes, interventions and benefits under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
