Address decay in the judiciary, Reps committee urges Tinubu

The chairman of the House of Representatives committee on judiciary, Oluwole Oke (PDP, Osun) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the infrastructural decay in the nation’s judiciary to enhance quick dispensation of justice.

In a statement on Friday, March 22, in Abuja, Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun state, applauded the president for taking steps to address the welfare of judges in the country through the Judges’ salaries and allowances bill.

He also applauded the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas and the entire members of the House for speedily passing the bill into law to improve the table home package of judicial officers in the country.

When the bill is signed into law, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justices of the Supreme Court, President of the Court of Appeal and other categories of judicial officers will be entitled to improve monthly salaries as well as regular and non-regular allowances.

Oke said that with the new development, judicial officers are now better placed to deliver services to the Nigerian people.

“The last time the salaries of judicial officers were reviewed was in 2007. So, we are glad that Mr President, the Speaker, and the Attorney General have heeded our plea and approved new salaries and allowances for them.

“With this, the nation can be assured of improved dispensation of justice because the welfare of the judicial workforce cannot be dismissed,” the statement read in part.

He however said that with the steps taken to address the welfare of judicial officers, the President should now focus attention on the infrastructure in the nation’s courts.

He said: “The decay in our court premises and residential quarters of our judges need to be looked into. The more we have better infrastructure, the better the readiness of our judicial officers to dispense services to society at large.

“The Court of Appeal is struggling with the management of off-season elections petitions. Tribunals have 20 cases currently ongoing and the judiciary itself does not have adequate manpower. They can’t recruit if they don’t have enough resources to pay them. So, we plead with our beloved President to look at this too”

He also appealed to the President to heed the yearnings of members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria who have been agitating for better remuneration in the past few years.

He however tasked the Judiciary to continue to perform their job without fear or favour, even as he reminded them not to forget that they remain the representative of God on earth and the last hope of the common man.

Ex-commissioner seeks Tinubu’s intervention on hajj fare

The former Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Oyinlomo Danmole, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene on the high cost of this year’s hajj.

Danmole said the fare for hajj has gone beyond the reach of intending pilgrims due exchange rate.

According to him, Mr President’s intervention would assist the intending pilgrims to observe the fifth pillar of Islam.

He stated that the President should intervene on the issue of four days deadline given to operators by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) by extending it to one more week.

He said in a statement: “As a result of different regimes of rates of exchange given the tour operators and the state pilgrims board, it has become difficult for private tour operators to keep their clients.

“The private operators, who had earlier collected a deposit of N5 million for the hajj exercise while state pilgrims took a deposit of N4.5 million, got a letter from NAHCON on Monday that a total amount of N5,013,473.33 is to be paid for services to rendered by Saudi authorities and Accommodation in Makkah and Madinah. The rate of exchange used in coming to the above cost was based on the rate of N1,625.35 to $1. Suffice to say that the rate of exchange from Monday till today is between 1,400 and 1,450. “There is no transparency in the rate used for state pilgrims which rumour had it that it is at the rate of 850 to a $1. That unexpected high rate of exchange the NAHCON based their calculations on will affect the private operators negative and capable of disrupting the Holy pilgrimage and sending them out of business.

“Your excellency sir, I am sure that you will intervene and put succour and smile in the face of the private operators. Mr President should kindly look into the high level of disparity in the exchange rate regime between the state sponsored pilgrims and those of the private tour operators.”

ACF hails Tinubu for reopening Nigeria’s borders with Niger

The mouthpiece of northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for reopening the Nigerian-Niger Republic air and land borders and restoring power supply to the neighbouring country.

A statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, reads: “The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) warmly welcomes news of order from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) for the reopening of the Nigeria – Niger air and land borders, lifting of economic sanctions, restoration of power supply (to Niger Republic) and other restrictions.

“ACF had maintained opposition to the sanctions and the threat of a Nigeria-led ECOWAS military invasion in the wake of a military coup in Niger, which were seen to only serve imperialist and neo-colonial interests, against the complex historical socio-cultural, economic and political ties which pre-dated European colonialism and its imposition of highly arbitrary boundaries.

“The directive from PBAT is a welcome development for Nigeria and Niger, whose border communities had groaned under the sanctions with local economic activities asphyxiated.

“The (border) communities can now look forward to a change in their challenging life conditions consequential to the sanctions. Critical supplies of food, medicines, and electricity will now resume as will air travel operators and passengers see an end to the ordeals while the sanctions lasted.”

President Bola Tinubu said Nigeria has become more transparent that ever, vowing that his administration will be deploying cutting-edge models to achieve financial reporting and process standardisation.

Tinubu also affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to diligently implement world-leading sustainability reporting standards aimed at unlocking capital investments, transforming business models, and safeguarding the environment in the country.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President spoke during a meeting at the State House in Abuja, with the Chairman of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), Mr. Emmanuel Faber.

The meeting coincided with the launch of Nigeria’s Adoption Readiness Roadmap by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC) in collaboration with ISSB.

This roadmap aims to guide businesses towards comprehensive sustainability reporting standards.

Highlighting the importance of compliance within the sustainability agenda, President Tinubu pledged that Nigeria would continue to adhere to international standards and expressed readiness to collaborate with ISSB to effectively harness national resources through reformed and reinforced financial management systems.

”As an administration, we are committed to adopting cutting-edge models for financial reporting and process standardization. This applies to environmental regulation, where we are on the verge of significantly reducing the volume of gas flaring in the country.

“We are more transparent than ever before, and we are doing everything possible to represent the continent in a way that will be beneficial to humanity as a whole,” the President stated.

Faber, while recounting Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability reporting, noted that at COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in 2022, Africa’s largest economy had expressed its intent to be among the earliest adopters of rigorous new standards, which is now a reality.

”I am extremely happy to be in Nigeria as the country announces its Adoption Readiness Roadmap. Nigeria is leading the pack in Africa and around the world, and these standards, which Nigeria is willingly adopting, will unlock sustainable capital inflows through foreign direct investments, promote inclusivity in value chains, and facilitate the decarbonization of the national economy,” Mr. Faber said.

Dr. Rabiu Olowo, the Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), explained that Nigeria’s decision to join the global baseline for sustainability reporting marks the country as one of the earliest proponents committed to enhancing the transparency of financial information and business performance through sustainable reporting practices.

”The adoption readiness working group is set to pilot our affairs and roadmap to help us succeed on this journey. We are happy to inform the President that the work of the adoption readiness roadmap is ready, and we have the roadmap for businesses to follow.

“We have five sets of early adopters, and we have a period for voluntary adoption leading up to 2028 for mandatory adoption of the standards,”  Olowo said.
