Maternal newborn deaths: Tinubu selects Sokoto, others for special focus

Salma Ibrahim Anas, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Health, announced that the president has designated Sokoto state as one of the few states to concentrate on the Accelerating Reduction of Maternal Newborn Deaths project.

She encouraged the Sokoto government to implement homegrown solutions to enhance sustainable maternal and newborn health outcomes in the state.

During a briefing with Governor Ahmed Aliyu on the Acceleration of Reduction of Maternal and Newborn Deaths, the Special Adviser also emphasized the necessity of strong political commitment to expedite the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality rates in the state.

She reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to improving access to healthcare delivery in Nigeria through the realization of the UHC leaving No One Behind, adding that the president has endorsed eight priority areas as recommended by the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC) on Health to reform the health sector for better performance and a major contributor to national development and job creation.

She said: “Lead as the Chief Advocate and Champion for the State and explore actions of key drivers and social determinants of plus root causes associated with high maternal and newborn deaths in the State.

“This Presidential initiative on Acceleration of Reduction of Maternal Deaths is critical and integral towards the attainment of our UHC aspirations of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Sokoto is one of the few states selected to focus on the Accelerating Reduction of Maternal Newborn Deaths project.”

On the reason to focus on the reduction of Maternal and Newborn Deaths, the special adviser, said the situation, as demonstrated by NDHS 2018 and MICS 2021 revealed a high burden of maternal and newborn deaths.

She added: “It has been proven to be beneficial as the majority of the deaths associated with pregnancy, childbirth and post-delivery as well as deaths related to the newborns are preventable (almost by 90%) using simple health interventions.

“It is a quick win to attain UHC and strengthen HSS, improve physical and mental wellbeing and productivity of individuals, families and communities and also a political score that is palpable and demonstrable within the shortest period.

“It is a two-prong approach that focuses on State Led and Homegrown solutions. Explore local contexts, existing strengthens, key social-cultural determinants, and use the deployment of home-grown solutions for sustainable health outcomes.”

Now we know there are those watching Tinubu with admiration

I sometimes wonder how Asiwaju Bola Tinubu manages as President of Nigeria. I mean, this a nation of millions of people with one very interesting sense of entitlement, also self-hating, but as a leader, you just have to learn to keep your cool, wear the hurls of insults from all sorts of people like a comfortable garb and stay un-distracted. You will get a proper sense of what I mean, about who we are as a people, on some of the social media platforms, especially WhatsApp, where people who will never lift a finger to contribute to efforts concerning everybody, including themselves, but will be the first to see errors and then lead the charge for the attack on those responsible enough to sacrifice on everybody’s behalf.

Imagine the intense pressure the President has been under since assuming office last year, especially as a result of the reforms being applied; the fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange market regularisation. Most responses from the public, so far, have been rather negative, cutting him no slack, even if most reviews of his administration’s performance, especially with regards to projections and quality of policies, have been positive. Ironically, the efforts for which he is being constantly heckled with insults are designed and targeted at making life more humane for the same people.

It was almost looking like nobody in the country was appreciating the President’s efforts at rescuing the country from the depth it had been buried over the years, seeming like the voices of blames and reprimand were drowning everything else, until Thursday last week, when some Nigerians came through to show they have been following events and observing Tinubu’s noteworthy efforts at giving Nigerians their country back.

On Thursday, in two different locations; one, directly to him inside the State House and another one, by proxy, to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, in his office, also in Abuja, two respected organisations, inadvertently and simultaneously, handed Grand Patron investitures to the President, to show their appreciation of his efforts at redirecting Nigeria back to the path of growth and proper nationhood.

First, it was the National Academy of Science, led by its President, Professor Ekanem Braide, that called on President Tinubu, with the intent to show appreciation for his administration’s focus on building a science, technology and innovation-driven economy. Braide applauded Tinubu for his administration’s recognition for the need for Nigeria to move towards knowledge-based economy, disclosing that the academy is currently working with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning on the review of documents that would aid urgent interventions for national development.

“We commend the administration of President Tinubu for truly recognizing the need for Nigeria to move towards knowledge-based economy, we are reviewing national planning document through the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and we are advising necessary interventions required urgently for national development. We have been informed that the President had directed that steps be taken to set up National research fund”, she added.

While the Academy of Science’s show of appreciation was happening, there was, in yet another part of the Three-armed Zone, a similar event holding, this time around in the office of the SGF. Senator George Akume, the SGF, also hosted a group of highly revered Nigerians, who were in his office to present another award of Grand Patron, conferred on President Tinubu. The Council of Former Permanent Secretaries (CORFEPS), led by its Chairman and former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, deliberately packaged the conferment of the award as part of its week for 2024. The coincidence in the presentation of the awards of same nature, by two unrelated revered professional bodies, was the icing on the week’s cake for me.

The week was more than just the affirmation by conferment of awards on the President, he did a lot and, just in the same pattern of his daily work routine, he lived the workaholic life all through it. Maybe I should add here that how Jagaban lives everyday is now public knowledge, especially after his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed in an interview with Chude Jideonwo on Thursday that the President is a workaholic, whose sleep hours are reduced so he could meet up with work.

“I’m working with a man who I can personally vouch for because he is going to bed at 2 am-3 am every single night, including Sundays. He wakes up at 7 am-8 am every morning, including Sundays, opening his files, working into the late nights when no one is there to say anything good or bad about him. He is doing the work. He is a workaholic, and he is doing it all to build a country that is reflective of a progressive and advanced country and prosperous society that he has envisioned, the same way he did in Lagos. I’m asking Nigerians to support the president, he means well”, Ngelale had told his host in the dialogue.

So it was a very busy week for our President, starting it with an all-important State Visit to the State of Qatar, on the invitation of the Emir of the country, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. While in Doha, on Sunday, he held a bilateral meeting with the Government of Qatar, during which multi-sectoral agreements were signed between both countries on education, enterprise development, investment promotion, youth empowerment, mining, tourism, and sports.

He also participated in the Nigeria-Qatar Business and Investment Forum, which was organized jointly by the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and Qatar’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The forum opened a platform for businessmen and investors in both countries to explore opportunities in key sectors, including oil and gas, manufacturing, agro-business, construction, real estate, ICT, renewable energy, solid minerals, as well as the service sector.

He returned to Nigeria on Monday, got back into that regime Ngelale described in his interview with Jideonwo. After his return, he sent some of his lieutenants, like Vice President Kashim Shettima and SGF Akume, to represent him at some public events, and personally handled those he thought he must personally handle. For instance, on Monday, Akume represented him at the African Regional Dialogue on the Summit of the Future in Abuja, while Shettima represented him in Lagos on Monday at the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership in Lagos on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the President initiated new policy directives aimed at improving the investment climate and position Nigeria as the preferred investment destination for the oil and gas sector in Africa. Then on Thursday he made new appointments, suspended some, all in his effort to clean the system up and buoy up those in need of it. Most of the activities were in the Power sector. For instance, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), he suspended Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Managing Director and three others. In their stead, he appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as interim MD, along with four others.

At the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO) and the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Power Company, he reconstituted the boards and amended their structures, appointing the Minister of Power as Chairman. Then later in the evening, he threw in some words for the Nigerian woman, describing her as the pivot of the nation. On Friday, he issued an order for the immediate rescue of kidnap victims in Borno state, where more than 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Kaduna where about 287 pupils and teachers were kidnapped in recent times.

Showing off with one of his best

I think I should highlight this occasion in Doha where our President, the City Boy, made a show off again. It was at the Nigeria-Qatar Business and Investment Forum, he was making a point about Nigeria being ready for the world to come take advantage of the unusual business and investment friendly environment available nowadays. There has been a perception, wrong albeit, that Nigeria slows business down with bureaucratic bottlenecks and the effect of corruption. To disabuse minds on that, the best from his arsenal is his National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who once oversaw the nation’s anticorruption agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to him, his administration had significantly strengthened the war against corruption and insecurity with Ribadu’s appointment as NSA, saying “we have a man who has won many global awards for anti-corruption as an anti-corruption czar. My responsibility is to tell you that Nigeria is open for business, and to assure you that your investments are safe in our hands. We have men and women of great reputation here and we believe we can forge a good committee that will advance our discussions to fruitful conclusions. A nation is an artificial entity unless there are good people to drive it. People build great nations and we have great people. We are ready”.

Showing Ribadu off, in the forum he did, far away from home, says a lot about the value he places on him. If I were the NSA, this will push me to do more than I do currently, although I know most of us cannot match his speed. He is a certified high-flyer, reason his Boss reposes so much trust in him.

  • Northern Senators to meet Tinubu over alleged N3trn ‘padding’ in 2024 budget

Northern Senators to meet Tinubu over alleged N3trn ‘padding’ in 2024 budget

The Northern Senators Forum has vowed to meet President Bola Tinubu over alleged N3trillion padding it ‘discovered’ in the 2024 budget.

The Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP – Bauchi Central) disclosed this during an interview by the BBC, Hausa Service.

Ningi said the forum has commissioned consultants to thoroughly scrutinise the 2024 budget to reveal how N3trillion was surreptitiously added to the amount passed by lawmakers.

He also said the Forum would soon confront Senate President Godswill Akpabio with its findings concerning the N3trillion alleged ‘padding.’

On plans by the forum to review the 2024 budget, Ningi said: “This is true, for the past three months, we have engaged consultants to review the budget for us. We have some experts that are working on it line by line.

“We have seen the huge damage that was done not only to the north but the entire country in that budget. We are supposed to sit with the Senate President to inform him about what we have observed.

“We want to show him what we have seen in the budget that is not acceptable, we will not accept them and we don’t want the country to continue spending money on those things.

“Apart from what the National Assembly did on the floor, there was another budget that was done underground which we didn’t know.

“The new things we have discovered in the budget were not known to us. We haven’t seen them in the budget that was debated and considered on the floor of the National Assembly.”

On alleged discovery of N3trillion padding in the budget, Ningi added: “For example, it was said that there was a budget of N28 trillion but what was passed was N25 trillion.

“So there is N3 trillion on top. Where are they, where is it going? So, we need to know this. There are a lot of things.

“We are coming up with a report and we will show the president himself and ask him if he is aware or not.”

Responding to questions during the BBC interview, Ningi said the present administration has in his opinion, not performed to expectation.

He said: “First of all, I want you to know that I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a representative of the people. Based on my opinion, the government hasn’t performed to our expectations.

“Things are getting worse compared to when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the leadership of the country. People are going through a lot of difficulties. We live in villages.

“We are going there to interact with them and they are lamenting seriously. They have nowhere to go, so they have no one to express their grievances to than us.

“I think Bola Ahmed Tinubu didn’t even understand this country and he didn’t understand the difficulties of ruling a country like Nigeria.

“Probably, he has his thinking of what governance is, but I don’t blame him so much because when he was campaigning for the seat, there was no agreement or promise between him and the people.

“People were just blinded and voted for him because he supported former president Muhammadu Buhari when he was contesting.

“Some even voted for him because he is a Muslim, as such he needed their vote on whether he can or cannot do the right thing for the country.

“But the most painful thing is that Northerners stood for him and did all they could to bring him to power, but unfortunately, there was no agreement between them and the president on what should be done to the North and the Northerners.

“Especially taking into consideration the importance and significant projects that North has been yearning and aspiring to get for a long. For example, the Ajaokuta project, the Mambila power project, the dredging of river Niger and other notable projects.

“What mostly disturbs my sleep is that we had a budget in 2013 and 2014 in which we earmarked billions of Naira but it was neglected by President Goodluck Jonathan, when President Buhari came, we thought it was one of the projects he would pay attention to, but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible for over eight years.

“Even road construction like Kano-Abuja is not yet completed, as if it was cursed by someone, despite the road being the soul of our travelers in the North.

“Indeed, we don’t attack the government as the opposition is supposed to do. But this is a result of the situation and the government we have.

“These so-called leaders they forced on us, were not voted by us. They brought religious issues, and ethnic and tribal issues into the process, they used propaganda saying that no Hausa/Fulani would be trusted to lead the opposition because there would be no peace.

“If you look at it from this scenario, the majority of those in opposition are from the Northeast and the Northwest, but we were not allowed to be the leaders of the opposition in the Senate.

“This is one of the reasons why we said we would go back and look at what is happening under the umbrella of the Northern Senators Forum which is under my leadership. But you can’t do everything here, because it involves members of the ruling and opposition parties. It is very difficult to challenge the ruling party under that umbrella once you want the unity of the North.”

On transferring of some departments of federal agencies to Lagos, he said: “I will speak not as a member of opposition, but as a northerner. As a northerner, I know that this is going to happen.

“We heard about it and we saw several examples in the past that tell us that all this is possible. But as I speak, our people, especially the leaders are yet to take any action to find the solution. That is why I am not even surprised.

“These things that are happening are of two categories. Some affect the North only, and some affect the entire country. What we are doing now as leaders of the Forum of Northerners, we are trying to address the problem or reduce its strength without allowing politics to come in.”

    Ningi also said the forum

plans to meet the President on need to complete the Mambilla power project.

“This is what we intended to do. We are to meet the president. We will talk to him about the Mambila power project, Ajaokuta and the River Niger dredging. We will talk to him about the Niger Republic. Recently, they said they will construct a dam, this is not good for us,” he said.

He claimed that the action taken by ECOWAS has affected the relationship between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

He added: “There was an agreement that they would not construct a dam so that the Kainji Dam would be intact and we will give them electricity in return.

“Over one billion US dollars was spent on Mambila, BBC has reported. Where is that money?  Who collected the money? We need to know and see what can be done.

“This Mambila is like the future of the North. Every part of the country has its holds as a symbol that will save them in the future.

“One of our weaknesses in the north is that we don’t love ourselves and our region so much that we don’t care about the future. We are just living anyhow.

“We just love the region in our mouths not at heart and I am seriously worried about that.”

On security challenges in the North, he said: “These security challenges are happening in the North. There is nowhere in the South where someone will be abducted and spend seven days in custody of the abductors.

“Look at Katsina, Zamfara, and Benue. I am even afraid that one day we will wake up and see that states like Zamfara are been taken away from the country. It is possible going by what is happening.”

Tinubu launches multi-billion agro zone, airport in Niger Monday

President Bola Tinubu would on Monday launch the Agro processing zone in Minna, Niger State and the Minna Airport.

Governor Mohammed Bago made the disclosure in Minna, Niger State capital, when the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), bestowed on him the Grand Patron of the Niger State Council of the Union.

Journalists also undertook a tour of the airport, as well as the agro processing zone which is ready for commissioning on Monday by President Tinubu.

Bago said with the airport 99 percent completed, with just the clean up remaining, the State was now positioned to play a major role in the North Central aero hub.

He said about 1,000 hectares of land was ready for use.

The Governor’ said there would be drip irrigation for greenhouses, expected to be the biggest in Africa.

Bago explained that a special agro-processing zone in the airport would have fresh vegetables, fresh fruits being moved to anywhere in Nigeria and abroad.

The Governor said beside the 1,000 hectares, there is another 1,000 hectares on the other side of the aisle that would be used for dairy products and exported to other states and across the world.

He said: “On the other side of the land, there is another 1,000 hectares where we are going to have dairy products. The meat and everything leaving here will be moved to the rest of the world. You know Niger State sells an average of half a million cattle to Nigerians and outside Nigeria daily.

“So, I will have to redirect it in a way that you don’t need to transport these cattle at all and in Niger State you can take the meat that is frozen anywhere and it will create employment, create value change.

“This is a free zone and in a free zone, you can see anything and we are very ambitious to expand the 2,000 hectares of land around the airport to 10,000 hectares of land. We are starting up from the 2,000 and we will keep going.

“We are constructing about 140 kilometers of water irrigation to this place from Shiroro dam and these are our partners and the people that we are partnering with from outside this country. You can see that they are ready for work.

“This project is an ambitious 50-year programme, but the first phase will be finished in the next few years so that Mr. President can commission it. We are bringing in 80 Megawatts of power to this airport. We are going to attract all of our investments to Niger State. There will be a power holiday for industries who want to set up here.

“We can give them free energy because we are housing four hydropower dams in Niger State and we subsidised 60 per cent of the power consumed in Nigeria and we are asking for 13.5 percent derivation from the Federal government.

“We are generating so that our people can benefit from what we are doing. Since 1960 that Nigeria got independence, Niger State has not benefited from these hydro dams. People are displaced. Our farmland are washed with excess overflow from the dams.

“Niger State has strategically positioned itself now to become Nigeria’s water reservoir so that the overflow from all these dams and rivers can now be stored for irrigation and we plug them during the crisis.”

NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo, while addressing newsmen during the tour with Governor Bago, said: “I learned about this airport several years ago, but at some point, I also learned that it had gone terribly down, and coming here today to see the massive transformation that is ongoing in this place speaks volumes about the commitment of the present administration in the State.

“If you go around the airport, you can see that it can compete with any other airport in Africa and that shows that the government has invested so much in this airport which is supposed to be a Federal airport. But the state through this hardworking governor has taken it upon itself to embark on this massive work.

“We have looked at the Governor’s idea of putting in place an agro-processing zone, a free trade zone. It will operate within the airport and that is a very great idea, an initiative by the governor. This way, the consumption of red meat, blood would have been a thing of the past.

“This is a very good thing. Before now, we were dependent on oil. There is a need to diversify and that is what the governor has done by focusing on agriculture.”

Tinubu to inaugurate multi-billion naira agro zone, airport in Minna

President Bola Tinubu is expected to inaugurate an agro-processing zone, agric equipment and the remodelled Minna International Airport on Monday.

Gov. Mohammed Umaru-Bago of Niger said while inspecting the projects on Saturday,  that about 2,000 hectares would be utilised for the agro-processing zone project.

Also on the inspection team was the President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo.

Bago said about 1,000 hectare would be utilised for drip irrigation and green houses while an additional 1,000 hectare was specifically for processing of dairy products.

He added that the remodelling of the International Airport in Minna had reached 99 percent completion.

“Niger State sells an average of half a million cattle to Nigerians and people outside Nigeria daily.

“We don’t need to transport these cattle by road at all, you can take the meat that is frozen from the airport to anywhere and it will create employment, enhance value chain,” the governor added.

On the agro zone, he said water would be piped from Shiroro dam for use by farmers at the site.

“We are constructing about 140 kilometres of water irrigation channels to this place from Shiroro dam,” he said.

The governor said the projects would be executed in partnership with some foreign companies.

“This project is an ambitious 50-year programme, but the first phase will be finished in the next few years so that Mr. President can commission it.

“We are bringing in 80 Megawatts of power to this airport,” he added.

He said government would offer tax holiday for companies willing to move to the state.

“Niger State has strategically positioned itself now to become Nigeria’s water reservoir so that the overflow from all these dams and rivers can now be stored for irrigation and we plug them during crisis,” he added.

The NUJ president commended the governor for the initiative.

“Coming here today to see the massive transformation that is ongoing in this place speaks volumes about the commitment of the present administration in the state.

“If you go around the airport, you can see that it can compete with any other airport in Africa and that shows that the government has invested so much in this airport,” he added.

He said that the idea of locating the agro-processing zone within the airport was a great idea.

“Before now, we were dependent on oil, but there is a need to diversify and that is what the governor has done by focusing on agriculture,” Isiguzo said.
