IWD: Olokode-Ayelabola urges Tinubu to implement 35% affirmative action

Chairperson and Convener of Asiwaju Renewed Hope (ARH’23), Kemi Olokode-Ayelabola has added her voice to celebration of the 2024 edition of International Women’s Day anniversary with the theme ‘Inspire inclusion’.

Olokode-Ayelabola, a resident of Republic of Ireland mobilised and campaigned for Tinubu during the February 2023 presidential poll.

She led the celebration as a mother and behavioral, developmental and child/young persons care professional, congratulating women all over the world and particularly in Nigeria for their immense contributions towards societal cohesion and national development.

In a statement to newsmen on Thursday, she said:

“March 8 is a day women are celebrated globally and today we thank God for counting us worthy to be alive to commemorate this auspicious day that seeks to honour womanhood, eliminate gender bias in the workplace, promote gender equality and create a socially-valued opportunities, resources and rewards.”

While reacting to the campaign theme Inspire Inclusion, she emphasizes the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society.

“The 2024 theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. It also encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalized communities.

“This is also a period to take stock of the work that needs to be done, and of course in Nigeria, we must redouble our efforts in engaging relevant stakeholders that can help in driving the processes of giving women our place of pride across the board. We need to continue to push until we change the mindset of people and improve the participation of women in politics and in other positions of leadership

“God did not make a mistake by creating a woman. He didn’t create a woman to be trampled upon. He created women to be a help-mate, a partner in progress. This is also a reminder to Nigerian men and everyone to join hands together and move the issue of women forward,’’ she said.

She appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step up the full implementation of 35% affirmative action of women in public governance and leadership.

“It will be uncharitable for anyone to say President Bola Tinubu has not placed high premium on women empowerment in the scheme of things, however I am of the opinion that he should also speed up the full implementation of the 35% affirmative action of women in public governance and leadership.

“He is one leader known for recognizing the invaluable role women have played and still playing in advancing the progress of the country since independence.

“I also appeal to this well-intentioned administration to focus more in appreciating the hard work and dedication of Nigerian women working tirelessly and achieving results in different fields of endeavor, from those sacrificing daily in the markets and farms to train the next generation of leaders, to those breaking limits in education, sports, medical field, arts, entertainment and even in politics, where they are still largely under-represented.

“The narrative needs to change in the positive direction for the womenfolk and truly women should be properly cared for, appreciated, celebrated and rewarded because of our pivotal roles in societal development and growth,” she stated.

Prevail on governors over financial autonomy for state Assemblies, PASAN begs Tinubu

Legislative workers under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) Southwest zone have called on President Bola Tinubu to prevail on state governors to respect the position of the law on financial autonomy for state legislatures as stipulated in the constitution.

The Association said the call became imperative in a bid to avert another strike that could cripple legislative duties across the nation, particularly during this critical economic period.

The Zonal body appealed on Thursday during a press conference, shortly after the Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting held at the Western Hall, House of Assembly Complex, Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The meeting was attended by the Zonal Vice President, Prince Adewale Adele; National Treasurer, Comrade Gbenga Oluwajuyigbe; Chairmen and Secretaries of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo state chapters among other leaders.

The Nation reports that, in November 2023, Parliamentary workers across the country embarked on a nationwide strike to demand the immediate implementation of legislative financial autonomy for the state legislatures.

The industrial action which lasted for three weeks was suspended following a jointly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Chairmen of the Conference of the Speakers and Nigeria Governors Forum to the effect that legislative financial autonomy for the state legislatures would take effect across the country by 28th February 2024.

However, the zonal vice president, while speaking said it was disheartening that despite the luxury of time provided by the MoU, legislative financial autonomy for the state legislature is yet to be granted by the governors.

He commended the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Hycathin Alia who recently assented to the legislative fund management law.

He noted that the laudable gesture of the Benue State Governor bears testament to the fact that he’s indeed a democrat who is so passionate about upholding and strengthening the principle of separation of power among the three arms of government in the state.

Prince Adele said: “The suspension of the industrial action then was given the confidence the Association reposed in the negotiators and also in consideration of the essential roles of the legislative Arm in the budget process as states prepare for Y2024 budget estimates.

“The MoU partly read that PASAN is at liberty to resume its strike if the governors renege on the agreement to implement legislative financial autonomy after the expiration of the ultimatum. It is disheartening to note that despite the luxury of time provided by the MoU, legislative financial autonomy for the state legislature is yet to be granted by the governors’.

“The ultimatum given for the implementation of legislative financial autonomy has expired according to the signed agreement with no positive response from the state governors except for Benue.”

He said: “Consequently, the Association considers the non-compliance of the Nigeria Governors Forum with the MoU as a breach of trust and a grave violation of section 121 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“We are optimistic that the implementation of full legislative financial autonomy will strengthen the state Houses of Assembly Service Commission, enhance the career progression of the legislative staff and also resolve issues like non-remittance of legislative staff monthly deductions e.g cooperative and pension deductions, non-payment of legislative staff wardrobe allowance, non-implementation of CONLESS as well as other germane issues bothering on the welfare of the parliamentary staffers across the federation.

“To avert another strike which could cripple legislative activities across the nation at this critical economic period, we respectfully call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevail on the state governors to respect the position of the law on financial autonomy for state legislatures as stipulated in the constitution.

“While we are awaiting further directive from the national secretariat of our union on the next line of action, it is pertinent to state that members of the ZEC of PASAN Southwest will stand firm to vehemently resist any attempt to subvert the quest for the implementation of legislative financial autonomy.”

  • SSANU to Tinubu: you have saboteurs in your govt

SSANU to Tinubu: you have saboteurs in your govt

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has alleged that there are saboteurs in the administration of President Bola Tinubu bent on frustrating his good intentions.

SSANU also told the government that its members are not slaves and should be paid when they fulfill their contractual obligations, adding that they will continue to agitate and down tools if there is no positive response from the government on their agitations.

National President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, stated this at the 47th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo State.

Tinubu had recently directed that university workers who were on a prolonged strike in 2022 and were not paid by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari within the period of the strike should be paid four months of the withheld salaries.

While members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been paid the four months of the eight months withheld salaries, the non-teaching staff including SSANU have not received anything, a development that is threatening industrial harmony in the public universities.

The SSANU president urged Tinubu to purge his administration of saboteurs and replace them with people ready to help him deliver on his mandate.

He said: “The President should understand that he has saboteurs in his government. They are not helping him and the powers of the President and what will make him responsible and responsive to Nigerians is to hire and fire, work with people who can deliver.

“You cannot continue to keep cabal within the system. And you say one thing tomorrow it’s sabotaged. As a union, we raise our voices that presidential pronouncements must be matched with action. We cannot continue to celebrate and clap over speeches. What we want is action.

“Workers in the universities deserve the best. We churn out young men and women to work in the industry to work for the government to be on their own. And I have the course to say that if you spend well on education, you will spend less on insecurity, you will spend less on health challenges, you will spend less on other issues. But when you don’t spend on education, you will continue to spend on defense on insecurity and other frivolities.

“So people should understand and our leaders should know that governance is not a child’s play. If you’re a leader you must be responsive. We have course also to complain about how our state universities are treated.”

The SSANU President said his members are not slaves and can never be, adding that they have a calling and a contract with government and their employers to execute whatever they have agreed to do.

He said: “We do the work that we do. If we work and you don’t pay (us), we agitate. If we agitate and you don’t respond, we must go on strike because it’s lawful and it’s within the ambit of the law and within our rights.”

Nigerian students abroad seek Tinubu’s intervention over non-payment of stipends

Nigerian students studying abroad under the Bilateral Education Agreement have appealed to the federal government to address the pressing issue of unpaid stipends which has led to “severe hardship.”

The scholars, who are studying in Russia, Morocco, Algeria, China, Hungary, and a few other countries, appealed to their umbrella body, the coalition of all the Nigerian Bilateral Education Agreement Student Association.

According to the association, for the past six to eight months, scholars enrolled in various institutions abroad have endured financial strain due to the delay in receiving their stipends.

The students appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene to ensure the payment of their stipends.

In a statement on Wednesday, March 6, in Abuja, a spokesman of the coalition, Ayuba Yushau the students said: “In addition, from the last payments we received (March-August), there was a shortfall of practically two and a half months’ payment. Moreover, some students in China have not received any stipends since they arrived in April and May 2023.

“This delay has led to dire consequences, especially for those residing in countries like Morocco, where the country doesn’t have adequate provisions for school hostels, unlike the other sister BEA countries. This means that stipends are crucial for covering basic expenses such as housing, electricity bills, handouts, internet bills, water bills, transportation, and food. Regrettably, some students have faced eviction as they struggled to meet rent payments, while others have tragically fallen ill due to hunger, requiring urgent medical attention. These hardships persist amidst the ongoing delay in stipend disbursement.

“Similarly, students in Russia are grappling with the harsh reality of an increased cost of living, exacerbated by the prolonged delay in stipend disbursement. Forced to navigate financial hardships amidst the pressures of academic stress, many students have been pushed to the breaking point which is diverting their focus from their primary goal of academic excellence.

“Due to the economic reality of the nation, we receive insufficient or no additional support from our parents. Moreover, prohibitions on employment in many of our host BEA Countries restrict our ability to supplement our incomes.

“We implore the Nigerian government to recognise the plight of its scholars abroad and take immediate action to alleviate their suffering. As the nation grapples with economic hardships, it is imperative to prioritise the welfare of our students who represent the future of our country.

“We earnestly plead with our President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a father figure and a visionary in education, to intervene in this pressing matter. His intervention in ensuring the prompt disbursement of our stipends will not only alleviate our current hardships but also allow us, his scholars, to focus wholeheartedly on our studies. We are confident that under President Tinubu’s compassionate and forward-thinking leadership, swift action will be taken to resolve this issue, enabling us to continue our academic pursuits without the burden of financial strain.

“The Nigerian Bilateral Educational Agreement Student Association remains committed to engaging constructively with relevant authorities to find swift and equitable solutions to this pressing issue.”

    • Gowon, Obasanjo, Jonathan, Anyaoku, Akinwunmi at Awolowo Prize for Leadership Award
    • Nigeria would overcome its challenges under Tinubu’s leadership, says Shettima

The principles and legacies of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, will continue to inspire current and future generations in their quest for good governance, President Bola Tinubu said yesterday.

He said the cherished principles have withstood the tests of time and geography, through the instrumentality of time itself.

President Tinubu, who spoke at the 2024 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership held at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos,  led other statesmen in extolling the virtues of the late pan-African nationalist.

At the event where the African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina, a former Minister of Agriculture, received the prize, former military Head of, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan; and former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku described Awolowo as a great leader worthy of emulation.

Awolowo, legal luminary and politician who passed on in 1987, was the first Premier of the defunct Western,  war time Federal Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of Federal Executive Council (FEC) and founder of the banned Action Group (AG) and Unity Party of Nigeria (uPN).

The Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, a prestigious, biennial, international prize that follows a rigorous process of nomination and subsequent screening by a selection committee, celebrates the democratic and development-oriented ideals of the sage.

Adesina is the fourth recipient after Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka; former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, and legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola had clinched the prize meant to encourage, recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in leadership.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu alluded to the power of time to judge fairly, noting that it is only time that defines the tough decisions, character and sacrifices a leader has to make in his bid make a difference.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the President described the late Awo as a compass and guiding light for many generations of leaders.

President Tinubu, in his address titled: ‘Leadership: An Alliance with Time,’ observed that understanding  Awolowo’s teachings requires coming to terms with “the obscured reality of leadership,” adding that “overcoming the conspiracies of mischief-makers, sceptics, and saboteurs” is the first test every true leader must undergo.

He said: “For the great sage from Ikenne, his enduring impact persists, despite revisionist efforts. Time sifts through biases and lies, and through hidden agendas and propaganda. Time delivers to us the naked truth that defines the tough decisions and sacrifices every sincere leader must make to create a difference

“But, in all we do, we must always find strength in the belief of those who trust the process, those who give us the benefit of the doubt. There is no greater honour than the privilege to lead one’s people, and assuming a position of leadership during times of turbulence is the ultimate test of our mettle as leaders.

“It is in these moments of uncertainty that true character and capability come to the forefront. While the immediate judgment may be rendered by the people we either impress or displease, the long-term verdict is carved by time, the passage of time.”

President Tinubu recalled how Awolowo contended with forces within and outside his political party, saying that the sage was a victim of his ambition to make a difference.

He recalled that Awo was dragged by a hostile opposition until he found himself behind bars.

President Tinubu, however, noted that with the passage of time, even the harshest of Awo’s critics came to realize the futility of taking a man who stood out, even in death, because of his refusal to compromise his convictions for granted.

The President added: “He (Awolowo) fought until his very last days in defence of democracy in Nigeria, and these are the examples that make him a hero of the nation. There is no doubt that time has been Chief Awolowo’s ally. Time has revealed the enduring impact of his ideas and actions.”

President Tinubu congratulated Adeṣina for clinching the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, describing the former minister as a “maverick change-maker who has not only flown our flag all over the world, but has dazzled the world with the novelty of his thoughts, indispensability of his ideas, and dynamism of his actions”.

Likening the AfDB President to a Prophet they have chosen to honour in his hometown, President Tinubu said just like Awolowo, Adesina “has exemplified the values that have shaped the course of history at all the institutions he has headed, all the offices he occupied.

He added: “In celebrating Dr. Adesina’s achievements, we are not merely acknowledging a leader; we are recognizing a role model and mentor who paves the way for current and future generations.”

Adesina  recalled the visionary leadership and legacies of Awolowo which, according to him, spreads across education, healthcare and infrastructure development.

The chairperson of the ocassion and  President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, commended the foresight of the eminent team of the judges for selecting Adesina for the prize, noting that they would not have chosen a better recipient.

She described Adesina as a true African leader and agent of transformation who has carried his responsibilities with grace, humility and uncommon commitment.

The President of the Union of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, paid glowing tribute to the achievements and efforts of Adesina, noting that the fruits of his innovative ideas are felt across Africa’s landscape, particularly in Agriculture, industrialisation.

The President of Ehtiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, emphasized the importance of celebrating people whose works impact millions of lives, especially in developing countries.

She said the presence of current and former leaders across Africa and beyond at the event was a testimony of Dr Adesina’s visionary and purposeful leadership, particularly his efforts that have taken the AfDB to global heights.

Also at the event were former Vice President Namadi Sambo; former Acting Afenifere leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Mohammed Bago (Niger Caleb Muftwang (Plateau), Umar Namadi  (Jigawa),  Abba Yusuf (Kano); Dikko Raddah (Katsina) and Alex Otti (Abia).
