UPDATED: Tinubu directs release of 102,000 metric tons of food items)

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate release of over 100,000 metric tons of assorted food items from the strategic reserve and the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria as a short term response to rising food shortage in the country.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this to journalists at the State House after a meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention on Thursday.

Idris also informed the government has proposed to embark on importation of whatever shortfalls that may be experienced after the release of the food commodities.

The Minister also said the government will mete out appropriate measures on food hoarders adding that emergency situations require emergency measures to ensure food is available to Nigerians.

“Today’s meeting was again on the issue of difficulty, like I said two days ago, of putting food on the table of most Nigerians, and has come up with a number of measures to ensure that food becomes more readily available to Nigerians. ⁣

“The first one is that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been directed to release about 42,000 metric tons of maize, millet, garri and other commodities in their strategic reserve so that these items will be made available to Nigerians; 42000 metric tons immediately. ⁣

“The second one is that we have held meetings with the rice Millers Association of Nigeria, those who are responsible for producing this rice and we have asked them to open up their stores.

“They’ve told us that they can guarantee about 60,000 metric tons of rice. This will be made available and we know that that is enough to take Nigerians the next one month to six weeks, perhaps up to two months 60,000 metric tons. They’ve agreed that they will make that available to Nigerians to bring it out to the market so that food can be made available. ⁣

“Now the whole idea of this is to crash the cost of these food items and these are measures that will happen immediately. ⁣

“42,000 metric tons from the strategic government reserve, about 60,000 metric tons of rice from the rice Millers Association, they have them in all their storage facilities and government in conjunction with them after this exhaustive meeting, has directed that they also bring this out immediately so that you food, I mean the price of rice will come down significantly. ⁣

“Now the third item is that the government is also looking at the possibility, if it becomes absolutely necessary, as an interim measure on the short run, to also import some of these commodities immediately so that these commodities can be made available to Nigerians immediately within the next couple of weeks,” he said

He went further to disclose that for the long term, the President has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to work with farmers and invest heavily in the production of various food crops in the upcoming farming season.

Asked if the committee discussed the prices at which they will be sold, Idris said: “Yes, the government has looked at that and what I can tell you is that whatever the government will do to ensure that this food is made available to Nigerians at an affordable cost, the government will do that. ⁣

“Well, you cannot hold the nation to ransom. You cannot have these commodities and you’re hoarding them in your stores when we all need them. We are in an emergency situation and we’ll take emergency measures to make sure that this food is available to Nigerians.⁣

“Well, people always talk about that even some commodities that do not have direct dollar denomination are always quoted in dollar. That is unfortunate. We ask that Nigerians need to be more patriotic. Be our brother’s keepers and sell this thing at a margin, but at a margin that is not also killing to Nigerians.”

Tinubu reaffirms commitment to provide affordable, decent housing for Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has said he is committed to providing the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development with the political will required for his administration to make a difference in the housing sector.

President Tinubu, who stated this on Thursday, February 8, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the 3,112 housing-unit Renewed Hope City in Karsana, Abuja, also reiterated his administration’s resolve to provide decent and affordable housing for Nigerians.

The 3,112 housing-unit Renewed Hope City project is part of 20,000 housing units to be delivered in the Federal Capital Territory under a Public Private Partnership Arrangement being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and it represents the first practical expression of the administration’s desire to implement a New City Development Plan under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The president said under this plan, integrated living communities that will redefine the essence of residential living for Nigerians nationwide will be built, emphasizing that his vision is to build dynamic, integrated, and self-sustaining communities, equipped with amenities to enhance the quality of living for residents.

According to a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President said: “This includes well-connected access and internal roads, provision of reliable and uninterrupted electricity, healthcare facilities to offer accessible and quality medical services and educational institutions to provide learning environments that nurture knowledge and skills.

“Our goal is to increase the sense of togetherness, improve the health and productivity of our citizens and reduce pressure on city centres. On this note, I am today directing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the Minister of Works to provide access roads to all Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Projects to increase accessibility and livability starting with this site in Karsana. This is because my administration believes that every Nigerian deserves to have access to shelter that is affordable and adequate.”

President Tinubu stated that beyond the moral imperative of providing decent and affordable housing for citizens, his administration also recognizes the immense potential of housing as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth.

He said: “It is with this understanding that we have classified housing as essential social infrastructure and made it a major priority area towards delivering economic growth and Job Creation. At 25 direct and indirect jobs per house, the 20,000 housing units planned for the Federal Capital Territory alone will create 500,000 jobs.”

Speaking on the determination of his administration to ensure that Nigeria’s housing deficit is bridged, the President said he is resolved to face this challenge with the boldness and urgency that it requires.

He said: “We aim to promote Public Private Partnership (PPP) collaborations that attract domestic, foreign, and diaspora investments. We also aim to design and implement incentive schemes and boost our capital market while enhancing the governance and risk management frameworks to ensure their stability, transparency, and integrity.

“We are resolved to face the housing challenge with the clarity of purpose and determination that is required to break all the barriers that stand in our way of success. That is why I took the historic decision of separating the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development from Works so it can be fully aligned towards tackling the nation’s massive housing problem. That is also why I have appointed experienced professionals with proven track records of delivering in the housing sector to lead the Ministry.

“I am happy to hear that the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has already awarded contracts for the construction of 200 housing units in twelve (12) states (2 per geo-political zone) as Renewed Hope Estates. In this regard, the Minister is to proceed with the groundbreaking ceremonies in the twelve (12) locations and the estates must be completed before the end of 2024.

“I am also delighted to hear that the Renewed Hope Cities are being developed in three locations: Kano 1,500 housing units; Lagos 2,500 housing units and Abuja 3,112 under a variety of funding arrangements. The Ministry’s plan to kickstart a National Urban and Slum Upgrading Programme, covering 26 sites nationwide, is also commendable.”

President Tinubu said in the next couple of weeks he will also be performing the groundbreaking of a similar project to deliver 2,500 housing units at the Ibeju–Lekki coastal city, Lagos.

He said: “This project will also provide a practical demonstration of cross-subsidization where out of the 1,500 housing units to be funded by FMBN, 400 will be sold at concessionary rates to low and medium-income Nigerians who are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.”

Tinubu to Nigerians: I pledge to faithfully commit to economic prosperity

President Bola Tinubu has pledged his willingness to commit to the country’s economic prosperity and development.

The president also urged Nigerians not to look back but forward because they have a country that truly cares about them.

He said his administration is setting a goalpost that it intends to win because it understands how to propel the engine of growth, stability, and the economic resurgence of Nigeria.

President Tinubu said this on February 8, in Abuja at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Renewed Hope 3,112 housing units’ pilot project site in Karsana, Abuja.

He said: “Nigerians, Don’t look back, look forward. Be hopeful. Be assured that you have a country that cares about you and you must care about the country. You have heard the data from the honourable minister and his team. What they are about to do to turn the country into a large construction site for housing units.

“That’s all I need to remind you, standing before you as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I pledge to Nigeria, my country being faithful and committed to the economic development and prosperity of every one of you. We are given a little trust, but we build on that trust to assure you today, tomorrow and day after of prosperity that we can create it.

“You pledge to Nigeria, your country, my country. To be faithful, loyal, and honest. To serve Nigeria with all your strength. You saw it on the field of play yesterday. You are all rejoicing. Every one of us loves victory. We love to win. When you are positive and you are hopeful Nigeria is winning. We didn’t say it would be smooth all the way through. But we are confident that this country will excel in all ramifications. We will defend our unity and uphold our honor and glory in every way possible. Because we are Nigerians, we have no other country.

“Why we are launching a groundbreaking, shelter is a necessity. It’s a human right and we are here just to do that, set the record straight. From this site, groundnut sellers will eat. From this site, water sellers will make a living. From this site, carpenters, and roofmakers, will make a living. Brick and mortar, will stand the test of the time and bring the glory of Nigeria brighter than we met it.

“Here again, let’s talk to Nigerians. Let’s talk to ourselves and see everything positive about our country. Don’t be spoiled. Don’t think of your country negatively. Before I left home this morning, I asked for the pledge, the printout of it and we had to relaunch it. Relaunch it. To be committed to the value, the greatness, the hope of our country. It is our country.

“Congratulations once again everybody on the attainment of victory. Just last night it was a moment of joy for every one of us united as a nation. Very hopeful that it is our turn for the trophy. Awa Lokan.

“Here we are today, we are setting the goalpost right. It means Nigeria is winning the goal. I’ve listened carefully to the able Minister’s view on housing development, he understands how to propel the engine of growth, stability, and economic resurgence of Nigeria.

He added: “They saw the vision when we took the ministry out of the clock room and made it, its independent visionary path for greatness. We know the value of housing. We appreciate the fact that it is an elixir for economic prosperity and job creation and hopefulness.

“The best thing we are doing now is putting housing on the front burner of our needs. I want to say thank you to the honourable minister, the Minister of State, and all civil servants, and thank you to the National Assembly for the accelerated review of the budget when we all work together, we can build together and we can achieve together a great country, for the prosperity of all of us.”

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa explained: “We have designed the Renewed Hope Cities as integrated living communities targeting all income brackets. They comprise one-bedroom blocks of flats, two-bedroom blocks of flats, and three-bedroom blocks of flats; two-, three- and four-bedroom terraces, four-bedroom duplexes, and five-bedroom duplexes.

“On the other hand, we have conceptualized the Renewed Hope Estates to cater to low- and medium-income earners. They comprise one-, two-, and three-bedroom semi-detached bungalows. To enhance affordability and ease of off-take, we used organic designs where one bedroom can be expanded to two bedrooms and three bedrooms as the income of beneficiaries increases over time.

“Furthermore, the program aims to address social inequality by providing a broad range of affordable ownership options. This includes single-digit and up to 30-year mortgage loans to be provided by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Rent-to-Own options where beneficiaries can move in and pay towards homeownership in monthly, quarterly, or annual installments, and Outright Purchase for high-income earners.

“The funding for these projects will come from a mix of sponsors comprising the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s budgetary allocation, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), and Public-Private Partnerships with reputable developers. As you will recall, Your Excellency has graciously approved the total sum of 126.5bn from the 2023 supplementary and 2024 budget for these projects including slum upgrade and urban renewal.

“We have also made cross subsidy a key part of our efforts to enhance affordability for low-medium income earners to foster integrated living.  Under this concept, the housing units built in the Renewed Hope Cities will be sold at commercial rates while a substantial percentage will be sold at concessionary rates to low- and medium-income Nigerians who are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

He stated: “The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme is not only a grand vision; it is a necessity for many reasons. As our population continues to grow, the demand for housing and urban infrastructure is rapidly growing. Our existing cities are grappling with issues like congestion, inadequate housing, and strained infrastructure.

“Furthermore, these projects will also help to alleviate the burden on existing cities and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

“Secondly, Sir, the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme is designed to be a catalyst for economic growth. The construction and development of these new areas will generate employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and attract investments. The 50,000 units that we plan to deliver under phase 1 will create 1,250,000 direct and indirect construction jobs. This is in addition to the value chain effects of purchase, supply of building materials, businesses around the construction sites, etc.

“The programme also aligns with Your Excellency’s broader vision of national development. It is a step towards creating smart and modern cities that can compete on a global scale, attracting both domestic and foreign investments. This will not only enhance our country’s image but also position Nigeria as a forward-thinking nation ready to embrace the challenges of the future. The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme is therefore a strategic initiative that addresses multiple facets of development – from urban planning and economic growth to social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

“Your Excellency, Sir, today we are here to kickstart this nationwide Programme with the ground-breaking ceremony for a 3,112-housing unit Renewed Hope City in Karsana, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory as part of 20,000 housing units to be built in Abuja.

“This project is the pilot under a Public Private Partnership between the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and a consortium of developers comprising Continental Civil and General Construction and Ceezali Limited signed in December 2023 to deliver a total of 100,000 houses nationwide.

“Under this PPP arrangement, the ministry is creating the enabling environment and facilitating off-takers for the houses through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) while the developers will source for land and finance the construction. By encouraging these PPP arrangements, we are taking the financial burden off the government while meeting our citizens’ needs for decent and quality shelter.

The minister noted: “We chose to start in the Federal Capital Territory because it is the heart of the nation. We are also impressed that the Hon. Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike is committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda, and understands the importance of housing and access roads to residents, and is taking steps to improve infrastructure in the FCT.

“Your Excellency, this ground-breaking is one of many more to follow. We have scheduled the ground-breaking for several additional sites nationwide for the commencement of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in this first quarter. This includes 2,500 Renewed Hope City housing units at the Ibeju-Lekki Coastal City, Lagos, the development of a 500-housing unit Renewed Hope Estate in Kano, and 250 housing units in twelve (12) states (2 per geopolitical zone) as Renewed Hope Estates. This amounts to 6,000 housing units under the 2023 Supplementary Budget.

“From the Ministry’s 2024 Approved Budget, we are also rolling out another batch of Renewed Hope Estates comprising 250 housing units each in 6 additional states totalling 1,500 housing units.

“This means from the housing component of the Supplementary Budget and the 2024 budget, in which you graciously approved N100bn and N18.9billion respectively for us to implement our Renewed Hope Cities and Estates and Urban and Slum Upgrading programmes, the Ministry is set to deliver 7,500 affordable housing units that will cater to the average Nigerian worker.

“Our objective is to follow your clear direction in charting a progressive path and demonstrating that your administration has what it takes to set our dear country on the path of sustainable growth and development. And that a better and prosperous Nigeria that cares for its citizens is possible.”

Alleviate suffering of Nigerians, control food prices, Lagos traditional ruler appeals to Tinubu

Following the escalating cost of living and food inflation, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye, the traditional ruler of the Otumara community in Lagos, has urged President Bola Tinubu to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and regulate the prices of essential food items.

Kalejaiye’s plea comes in response to a court directive ordering the federal government to set prices for goods and petroleum products within seven days, starting from Wednesday, January 7.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Lagos issued the order after an originating motion was presented and argued by human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana.

Expressing his reaction to the court’s decision, Kalejaiye emphasised the insecurity and hunger prevalent among Nigerians, attributing the nation’s challenges to self-inflicted causes.

He said: “There is tension in the land as far as food inflation and insecurity are concerned. The challenges confronting us as a country are self-inflicted. They are caused by politicians and middlemen. They are culpable for the corruption, current economic hardship, and insecurity Nigerians are suffering.

“Sometimes in December 2023, President Bola Tinubu released N2 billion each to federal lawmakers to buy palliative grains for their constituents. This was intended to address food shortage but how many of these lawmakers distribute these grains to their people?

Read Also: Court orders Federal Govt to fix prices of goods within seven days

“Instead, they diverted the money and left the people who voted them into offices hungry. Many of our politicians are selfish, and greedy and are after their pockets. They are frustrating Federal Government efforts to address the challenges of food insecurity with their corrupt and selfish nature.

“Just two days ago, the president directed the special presidential committee on emergency food intervention to release grains from the national food reserve to Nigerians.

“This is to crash food prices in the market. But as noble as this intervention is, it has been defeated before it is even implemented. The situation we are now in the country happens everywhere. It is not peculiar to us but what makes it worse is the attitude of our elected politicians towards solving it.

He added: “It is obvious that this emergency food intervention would not yield any meaningful impact because the grains, as usual, will be diverted by those that are to implement it.

“They won’t get to the target audience who in this case are the poor of the poorest. If President Tinubu is keen on ending food insecurity, he must devise a means to ensure that the grains get to the people that are deserving of them and not in the hands of corrupt politicians and civil servants.”

Kalejaiye also blamed the middlemen for hoarding the commodities and taking undue advantage of the free fall of the Naira to increase prices of food items.

He added: “Our food challenges are not wholly about scarcity, there is food sufficiency in the country but the problem is, the middlemen are hoarding them. For instance, days ago, about 10 trailer loads of rice were deposited at a warehouse in Ilupeju, Lagos. And similar situation exists across major markets and warehouses across the state.

“These traders hoard these commodities to create artificial scarcity which in the end will shoot up the prices and by implication create hunger in the land.

“The government must rise to the occasion and stop blaming the opposition for the scarcity. They need to come up with mechanisms to control prices of food items as at every slightest opportunity traders adjust prices of commodities at will.”

JUST IN: North solidly behind Tinubu, say northern pro-democracy groups

Pro-democracy groups from the 19 states of the north, on Thursday, February 8, said that the region is solidly behind the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

They condemned sponsored protests in some states in the region against the present administration.

The groups called on the people to be patient and cooperate with the president as he worked assiduously to clear inherited challenges.

The amalgamation of pro-democracy groups from the 19 northern states, under the aegis of the Arewa Initiative for the Defence and Promotion of Democracy (AIDPD), made these assertions at a press conference on the State of the Nation in Abuja.

The chairman of the groups, Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, commended patriotic northerners and all Nigerians cooperating and supporting the present administration in its bid to provide solutions to the nation’s problems “despite the incitement by some unscrupulous politicians who are bent on inciting the masses against the government.”

He insisted that the current administration of President Tinubu “inherited a lot of problems from the past administration of Muhammadu Buhari which it is currently trying to address.”

Ma’aji said: “Arising from our emergency meeting held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, to review the State of the Nation, we members of pro-democracy groups from the 19 Northern States and the FCT make the following observations and resolutions:

“To commend patriotic Northerners and indeed all Nigerians who are cooperating and supporting this government in its bid to provide solutions to the nation’s problems despite the incitement by some unscrupulous politicians who are bent on inciting the masses against the government.

“That the world economy is currently not in the best of shape due to the Russian-Ukrainian and the Israeli-Palestinian wars, etc. We observed that the Nigerian economy is not exempted from this global economic problem.

“That the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited a lot of problems from the past administration of Muhammadu Buhari which it is currently trying to address.

“For instance, the Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had just revealed that the crude oil the country will be getting in the next six months had been sold in advance by the immediate past administration.

“That the solutions to the problems cannot be instantly solved but in a gradual pattern.”

The groups urged Nigerians to show patriotism by cooperating with the present administration “in its bid to finding solutions to the country’s problems such as inflation, corruption, insecurity – banditry and kidnapping – that the country is currently facing.”

Ma’aji added: “Disgruntled politicians and other unpatriotic elements have perfected plans to mobilise bogus Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to stage phantom protests across the country to smear the image of this administration” and called on them to “stop their evil machinations.”

“That those disgruntled politicians who are using some clerics through misinformation to issue statements condemning this administration without any good reason should desist forthwith in the interest of our beloved nation.

“We are not averse to any form of legitimate protest to show grievances to the government’s policy or programme, provided it is done in good faith and under the laws of our beloved country, Nigeria.

“We frown at the idea of sponsoring people to stage fake protests for the financiers to score cheap political mileage by discrediting the current administration.

“We call on all Northerners and indeed all Nigerians to continue to support the current administration in its bid to bring prosperity to our nation. That we Northerners are not against Mr President and this administration. We will continue to support and pray for this administration to succeed.

“That the current administration is just eight months into office. It needs more time to deal with the problems it inherited. So, we the well-meaning Northerners are praying and collaborating with the current administration for it to succeed in positively turning around the fortunes of the country.

“That we have only one country, the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Thus, we should all rally round this administration and work together with our brothers and sisters from the South to address our challenges.”
