The Super Eagles defeated the Bafana Bafana 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 score line in full play time and extra time at the Stade de la Paix in Cote d’Ivoire.

    • APC chieftain Ohunyeye: President will deliver on promises

A former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has assured fellow Nigerians that the gains of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies will be massive and far-reaching.

In a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru, Bokoru recalled that while campaigning for Tinubu in Bayelsa State during last year’s general election, Sylva described him as a “modern industrialist”.

He said: “The fact is made even more apparent by the fact that Sylva campaigned on the fundamentals of President Tinubu’s ideals: modesty, clarity, and a sincere absence of speculation, an agenda of the people for the people.”

The media aide said there was never a time the former minister directly or indirectly wrote any article against President Tinubu’s economic policies.

He said: “The idea of the article, its originators, and sponsors is to create a wedge between Chief Sylva and his principal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is a cheap shot and one of the most unintelligent acts of political schemes. It reeks of helplessness, lethargy and classless desperation.

“It doesn’t take rocket science to understand that the financiers of such vile acts of antagonism against the Federal Government are those who have made it their life’s single purpose of destroying the image and person of Chief Sylva, however they can…

“Chief Sylva has campaigned tirelessly on the efficacy of the President’s economic plans and believes strongly that as a country, we are on course for a healthier, sustaining economy.”

Also, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Olamide Ohunyeye, has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Tinubu amid the current hardship in the country.

Ohunyeye made the appeal while featuring on a current affairs programme: “Situation Room” on a private radio station, Fresh FM, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He said: “Now, with that (subsidy removal), what Mr. President brought on board is at least about N6 trillion savings for the country on yearly basis and we expect that in the medium term, most of these money will be ploughed back to achieving massive development across board in the country.

“We expect that N6 trillion will do a lot in building infrastructure in generating employment and reducing pervasive poverty through entrenched poverty reduction schemes all over the country.

“You could see the rot within the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that is currently being investigated and with the view that some of the findings will aid the organisation of these entities.

“So, in the short run, we might not actually see the effect. But very certainly, with the pragmatic leadership that Asiwaju has displayed, it’s very sure that in a very limited time, we are going to start seeing the results.”

  • President Tinubu and the National Question

President Tinubu and the National Question

The mismanagement of crisis of nation building in most post-colonial African states created without rhyme or objective criteria by self-serving imperialist powers has always been the source of disintegration of many of these states. The owners of these new states created to satisfy the greed of their colonial owners had no illusion. In deed many of their local public officials including Oliver Stanley, predicted their departure will result in a descent into turmoil of warring groups, outright civil wars and underdevelopment.

Attempts to delegitimize Tinubu’s hard-earned victory in the last February election by aggrieved southeast political elite and a segment of northern political elite who openly canvassed for military takeover or institutionalization of an Interim National Government because they lost out in what is often a zero-sum struggle for power, was one of the fallouts of our own unresolved national question.

Unfortunately, those who have the historic opportunity to change the narrative including Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari did everything except revisiting the unresolved national question.  But because of President Tinubu’s many years of preparation for his current job, Nigerians had expected him to take the first step towards a national rebirth by ensuring distributive justice through resettlement of those condemned to IDP camps by terrorist that have been identified as immigrant Fulani herdsmen back to their ancestral homes.

Unfortunately, as if it were possible to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, Tinubu like his predecessors, chose to focus exclusively on the ‘economies of the national question’. The result is that even with the new Sheriff in town, mindless killings, banditry and kidnapping for ransom continued in Plateau and other parts of besieged northeast and northwest. With last week’s killings of three Obas and kidnapping school children from his otherwise safe Yoruba nation that had hitherto provided succour for those fleeing violence from other troubled areas of the north, the battle has finally been brought home to him.

With what now appears to be an open challenge to his legitimacy, it is hoped the president understands it is time to stop playing the ostrich especially as regards immigrant Fulani terrorists and behave like an elected sovereign with a license to breach the constitution, if necessary, to protect the nation from those holding her hostage.

On the unresolved national question, the president has so far aligned himself with those who believe attainment of economic justice i.e.  “Ensuring equitable allocation of resources and effective and sustainable production and distribution of appropriate goods and services is the ultimate solution to the national question”. The promoters of this approach led by Professor Dupe Olatubosun, formerly of NISER and a United Nations Consultant for many years and his fellow school of thought had argued that “promoting efficiency within existing structure will usher in all round prosperity and life abundant for all the people of Nigeria which will in turn lead to peaceful and equitable cohabitation of the various communities in Nigeria”. (The economies of the national question in Dupe Olatunbosun: An Autobiography (2005) pg. 175.

Unfortunately, today 24 years into the fourth republic, we are more divided than we were in 1999.  Instead of ‘life abundant for everyone’, Nigeria has become world poverty capital. The problem with proponents of this approach is the assumption that every nationality wants life abundant for its people. Although, while they admitted we are a multicultural and a heterogeneous society, they however ignored the fact that it is the level of cultural development that determines if the ruling political elites create an egalitarian society or seek power to preside over an empire of slaves.

There is a competitive spirit in every Igbo man which makes him believe he could, with hard work, become a Coscharis (Cosmas Maduka, Kalu Uzor Kalu or Rocha Okorocha, Igbo multibillionaires who started by hawking on the streets. For the average Igbo man therefore, it is self, first.

The north remains the poorest part of Nigeria despite monopoly of power for the greater part of our history. The north harbours more than two-third of Nigeria estimated 15million of out school children while their political elites send their children to the best schools in the world. Rather than a crusade for ‘life more abundant’ for the impoverished people of the north, the goal of the northern ruling elite is presiding over an empire of slaves.

The South-south political elites especially the Ijaw, the fourth largest ethnic group in the country, share the same world view with the north they had aligned with since independence. Their leading light include the likes of Alfred Diete Spiff, governor of Rivers in his twenties and remembered more for shaving with a broken bottle, the head of a reporter who ran a story about the governor’s inability to pay salaries of teachers on the occasion of the governor’ birthday. It turned out that was at a time he was cruising around the Atlantic Ocean in his private ship according to Murtala Muhammed regime that demoted and retrieved a number of properties from him. We remember Peter Odili who secured a perpetual injunction against probe for financial malfeasance against his state by EFCC. There was the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha who escaped arrest and prosecution in Britain for defrauding his state by disguising as woman while on a flight to Nigeria. We can add James Ibori who served a jail term in Britain for defrauding his Delta people as a governor.

And if Tinubu needed additional reasons to know the answer to our crisis of nation-building is politics, the ongoing conspiracy of dubious bank owners to derail his government through foreign exchange manipulation provides just that. The time to placate them is over.

Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, our former foreign affairs minister once said that most Nigerian billionaires made their money through government. From the revelations from the ongoing probe of Emefiele’s leadership of the CBN, isn’t it time we beam light at the source of wealth of those who without inheriting industrial empire from their parents’ bought banks and today leave like film stars?

Yemi Cardoso, the current CBN governor last Monday told the nation that the Tinubu government met $7 billion in unpaid obligations and that the results of Deloitte forensic audit of what is valid or not, revealed that: $2.4 billion had issues including not having valid import documents; that entities that did not exist got allocation; entities who asked for forex got more than they asked; and that entities that did not ask got allocations. All these went through the banks that are currently engaged in foreign exchange speculation that has moved the exchange rate from about N750 to N1,400.

Do we need further explanation as to why some of these banks are declaring such huge profits that will make bankers in Europe and America green with envy?

It is on record that two-third of staff of the banks declaring profit in trillions pay slave wages of about N75,000 to their workers. President Tinubu, as an elected sovereign can borrow a leave from Niccolo Machiavelli, the apostle of politics of ‘the end justifies the means to charge the forex speculators trying to sabotage his economic policies for defrauding their workers.

The president’s other political battle over the national question is restructuring or devolution of power. There is no known multi-ethnic nation in the world that has survived by operating a federal constitution where close to 70% of the items are on the exclusive list. With about 23 states already managing one form of security outfit or the other, the time for state police is now. Local people are best at providing security for themselves even if elder statesman Theophilus Danjuma did not accuse the military and federal police of betrayal.

Rivers kinsmen defend Fubara’s Chief of Staff, others, write Tinubu

The people of Ekpeye in Rivers state have defended their kinsman, Edison Ehie, who is the Chief of Staff to the state Governor Siminalayi Fubara against the criminal allegations preferred on him by the police.

Despite conflicting court orders, the police had declared Ehie wanted after accusing him of masterminding the bombing of the hallowed chambers of the state House of Assembly and linking him to the brutal murder of the Ahoada Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP. Bako Angbasim.

But the kinsmen in an open letter to President Bola Tinubu raised the alarm that there was a concerted effort to kill their sons and Edison, using the instruments of government, and called for the President’s urgent intervention.

Reeling out the antecedent of Ehie, his kinsmen said the Chief of Staff was first elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2015; reelected in 2019; emerged as the Deputy Speaker, and in 2023 reelected and became the Leader of the House.

The kinsmen said Ehie played pivotal roles in the election and re-election of Chief Nyesom Wike as the governor of Rivers and that Wike gave him an award of excellence as the Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS) because of his integrity.

They recalled that Wike was so pleased with Ehie that during the kick-off of the Ozochi Road project, he declared to the entire world that he would hand over power to youths like Ehie in Rivers State.

“Our son, Ehie, has no criminal records of murder, terrorism, attempted murder, conspiracy, and arson”, they said.

The kinsmen alleged that Ehie only became a villain for disagreeing with Wike on the impeachment of Governor Fubara.

They said: “This disagreement marked the beginning of the travails of Ehie. Ehie did not commit any crime or persons arrested, charged, and remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, not even the persons declared wanted by the police with him against a subsisting court order.

The kinsmen insisted that Ehie, who represented Ahoada East Constituency 2 could not be held responsible for the murder of the DPO, which occurred at Ahoada Constituency 1.

They said: “The murder of the DPO was carried out by a group of Icelander Cult group but the police authority is yet to apprehend his killers. Several arrests have been made and the police have concluded their investigations and submitted their report.

“75 persons are facing prosecution. It is worthy of note that both in the final police report and the charge sheet before the court, Ehie and the persons declared wanted with him were not mentioned in any way.

“This, to link Ehie to the murder is a misjudgment and it amounts to trivialising the death of a brilliant police officer who has given all his best to the society.”

The kinsmen urged President Tinubu to prevail on Wike and the Inspector-General of Police to drop “all the trump up charges” against Edison describing the matter as a pure case of victimisation and oppression.

The Ekpeye people thanked President Tinubu for his fatherly intervention to the crisis that engulfed the state and commended Governor Fubara for obeying the President by implementing the Peace Accord.

Addressing the President, they said: “We are confident that as someone, who has suffered prosecution for standing up for democracy, you are in a position to appreciate more adequately what our sons are going through.

“Ehie, Chime Ezebalike, Izu Kpasa, Happy Bennett, Adokiye Oyagiri and Progress Joseph are innocent of the crimes they are being accused of. Holding political views not similar to those in power should not be a crime.”

Over 33 leaders of Ekpeye Kingdom comprising former lawmakers, representatives of many communities, various groups, community leaders and traditional rulers signed the letter.

    • Ipesa-Balogun unveils book to mark 60th birthday

Former Chairman of Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area, Lagos State, Afeez Ipesa-Balogun, yesterday appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu in his bid to reposition the economy for excellence.

He assured that Nigerians will savour a new lease of life as the reforms of the administration are implemented.

Ipesa-Balogun, a Third Republic member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, said Nigerians will never regret voting for President Tinubu in last year’s poll.

He spoke at book lunch in commemoration of his 60th birthday in Lagos.

A huge crowd gathered at the auditorium of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos for the book launch.

The book titled: Afeez Ipesa-Balogun, Mr Speaker… exploration of the archives, a 278 pages and segmented into 15 chapters. The book launch was part of activities to commemorate Ipesa-Balogun’s 60th birthday.

The book is a compendium of the odyssey of Ipesa-Balogun through birth, infancy, early school age, high school and tertiary institutions. Mostly centered on his dreams and accomplishments, it also chronicled the former council boss’ forays into political landscape up till his diamond jubilee day celebration.

The event featured unveiling the 60 winners of Ipesa-Balogun@60 Scholarship Scheme, presentation of the book, book review and cutting of cake.

The celebrator said the book is dedicated to God, his parents – the late Alhaji Atanda Balogun and Alhaja Ramota Balogun (Nee Akinboro) and his late wife, Monsurat Mosunmola Ipesa-Balogun.

“I want to thank my late parents for their inspiring sacrifices and my late wife for her dotting love,” he said.

Ipesa-Balogun appealed to Nigerians to be patient on the harsh economic situation.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a passionate leader, who can never be happy with the situation of the country.

He described the situation of the economy as unfortunate; expressing optimism that Mr President will transform the country, improve the economy as he has transformed Lagos State.

He said: “Nigerians should be patient with Mr President. He will definitely improve their wellbeing because we have a lot we can export to generate foreign earnings. All the bottlenecks affecting economic growth will be removed; foreign exchange will be earned and naira will be valuable again.

“I understand people smuggle our agricultural produce to neighboring countries to export because of bottle necks in our country, he would remove all the bottlenecks so that we can earn foreign exchange and at that point we will begin to reduce pressure on naira and naira will be valuable. You will start to see signal of good things happenings after one year.”

He also advised citizens to keep working hard and they should not give up.

“They should keep working hard, they should not give up. If one road is blocked, they should try alternative roads; that has been my life. As wrote in my paper, I wasn’t thinking about politics until my friend nominated me and I got to like it. Imagine a young man, desperate to be an aeronautical engineer now a politician,” he said.

The Book Reviewer, Prof Olugbenga Akingbehin, said the book came at a time of severe dearth of politically stimulating books.

“The book is a bright spark in the dark world of the Nigerian intellectual voyage. The book’s power and energy should, therefore, fuel the scholarly thirst of students, politicians, historians and future leaders. I hereby commend this invaluable book to the reading public,” he said.

According to him, “The book is a compendium of the odyssey of our own Afeez Ipesa-Balogun through birth, infancy, early school age, high school and tertiary institutions. Mostly centred on dreams and his accomplishments, it also chronicled the young man’s forays into political landscape up till this day of diamond jubilee celebration. The narrative is not devoid of his travails along the journey of life.”

Former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Babatunde Fowler, spoke of his connection with the celebrator as very important and that they have been together for a very long time.

He described as a good leader and a people’s person who handles all situations’ excellently with no problems.

Fowler said: “Some of you might wonder my connection with the celebrator. My first main meeting with him was when I was the Permanent Secretary/Executive Chairman, Lagos State Revenue Service (LIRS). I was asked to monitor the Oshodi area but before I went, I was told that Oshodi was a very tough area. I got there with the chairman, he welcomed me so well, we had a little discussion about security and other measures, he handled everything excellently. I can tell you during that exercise, there was no trouble, no problems, as we went around you could see he knew exactly what was going on and the people love him. That shows the type of leadership he gave in that area and since then, we became brothers and our relationships keep growing stronger.”

Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, who is the Chairman Organising Committee, described Ipesa-Balogun as a childhood friend.

Akinderu-Fatai said the book would serve as a good archive for generations.

He hailed the celebrator’s scholarship gesture, saying that the beneficiaries would cherish it for the rest of their lives.

The Commissioner for Housing appreciated the guests for honoring their invitation.

In attendance were President Tinubu represented by All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and Secretary of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) Alhaji Mutiu Are;  former Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; Senator Opeyemi Bamidele joined via virtual; former Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola was represented by former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Kayode Opeifa; representative of Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, Dr Habibat Adubiaro; former APC National Legal Adviser Dr Muiz Banire;  ALGON National President Kolade Alabi;  lawmaker Biodun Orekoya Chairman of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area Dr Ahmed Apatira; his Onigbongbo LCDA counterpart Oladotun Olakanle; Tajudeen Yusuf; Ipesa-Balogun’s successor at Oshodi-Isolo, Bolaji Ariyoh; Mr Akeem Apatira; Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Chairman Kehinde Oloyede; ex-lawmaker Niyi Fabikun and Ayo Olugbenro.

“The ground-breaking exercise to be conducted by the President will mark the official launch of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme, initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to increase the housing stock in the country and bridge the prevailing housing deficit. The Cities will have a minimum of 1,000 housing units per site in one location in each of the six geo-political zones of the country and the FCT, while the Estates will have a minimum of 500 housing units per site in the remaining thirty (30) States.

He added: “The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates, as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, has continued to emphasize, will be designed as integrated living communities targeting all income brackets, and comprising one bedroom block of flats, two-bedroom blocks of flats, and three-bedroom blocks of flats targeting low – medium income earners; two-bedroom terraces, four-bedroom terraces, four-bedroom duplexes, and five-bedroom duplexes targeting high income earners.

“The PPP project at Karsana is being funded by the developers who also sourced for the land, while the Ministry is creating the enabling environment and will facilitate access by off-takers for the houses from subscribers to the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme managed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), an agency under the Ministry.

“The project is the first in a series that the Ministry will be embarking on in the coming weeks. Others are the 2,500 Renewed Hope City housing units at the Ibeju-Lekki Coastal City, Lagos, 500-housing unit Renewed Hope Estate in Kano and 250 housing units in twelve (12) states, two in each geopolitical zone, as Renewed Hope Estates in Ogun, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Abia, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Benue, Yobe, Gombe, Katsina and Sokoto.

“At the core of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme is the cross-subsidy component where 80% of the housing units developed will be sold at commercial rate while 20% will be sold at concessionary rates to low- and medium-income Nigerians who are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. The idea is to deploy profits made from the commercial units as a subsidy for the units reserved for low- and medium-income earners.

“Also notable are the numerous ownership options available to Nigerians aimed at enhancing the affordability of the houses. These include single-digit, 30-year mortgage loans to be provided by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Rent-to-Own options where beneficiaries can move in and pay towards homeownership in monthly, quarterly or annual instalments, and Outright Purchase for high-income earners.

“It would be recalled that the President approved N100bn for the Ministry in the 2023 Supplementary budget and N18.9billion in the 2024 budget for the implementation of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates as well as Urban and Slum Upgrading programmes. The Renewed Hope Cities and Estates project also made the list of the President’s Top 10 projects for 2024, spurring widespread optimism about his commitment to the project.”
