We’ll embark on massive education effort to combat insecurity – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, January 16, has disclosed plans of his administration to combat rising insecurity in its various forms, including kidnapping and banditry, with massive education of the youth population.

President Tinubu, who made the disclosure when he received a delegation of Jam’iyyatu Ansaridden, a highly respected Islamic Movement, at the State House, in Abuja, also described recent spate of kidnappings and bandit attacks as disturbing, sinister and ungodly, condemning the situation.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President said while security agencies are acting with dispatch to immediately address the current challenge, all required resources, policies and plans will be rolled out soon for the massive education of Nigerian youths.

The president said education is the antidote to the troubles agitating the nation, adding: “there is no weapon against poverty that is as potent as learning.

“We are dedicated to building a lasting peace with a focus on the comprehensive education of our children. We will get our teachers and their owners involved in an education process that will be relevant to the future of this country. It is important. Knowledge brought me here with your prayers and your support. Without knowledge, there is nothing to generate hope for mankind,” President Tinubu said.

The president also emphasized that it was important to promote updated knowledge through existing islamic learning institutions for youths in Northern Nigeria to speed up development in the region, in Nigeria, and throughout Africa.

“Please embark on special prayers. Embark on proper education for our youths. Kidnapping and banditry are not the way of God. Shedding each other’s blood is bad. And there can be no development without peace. It is only in the area of peace that we can eliminate poverty. We must work for peace in order for our economy to grow better.”

In his remarks, the Jam’iyyatu Ansaridden leader, Sheikh Muhammad Lamine Niass encouraged the President to continue implementing his reform initiatives while affirming that his movement, which is reputed for its promotion of peace and tolerance, would continue to pray for Nigeria’s peaceful development.

Insecurity: Tinubu vows to stamp out remnants of Boko Haram, bandit, others

Following the increasing spate of insecurity in parts of the country, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, January 16, vowed to stamp out remnants of Boko Haram, bandits and kidnappers in the country.

This is as former President Muhammadu Buhari, apologised to Nigerians for pains of some reforms embarked upon by his government.

Tinubu and Buhari spoke at the unveiling of two books in Abuja.

The books include: “Working with Buhari (2015 – 2023)” written by a former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, and “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy, 2015 – 2023 (Vols 1-5) edited by Dr Udu Yakubu.

Tinubu said his administration will continue where the last administration of President Buhari stopped in the area of tackling insecurity.

The president’s assurances came at a time when there is a hike in insecurity in some parts of the country, in the FCT Abuja.

He also said Buhari did not interfere in his administration in terms of decisions on who to appoint or what policies to introduce.

Tinubu said: “President Buhari assumed office at a very difficult period of our national life when the economy was spiralling into recession and Boko Haram had taken over swaths of our territory in North East.

“At a point, it appeared even Abuja, the seat of government would fall into the hands of Boko Haram with the bombing of the UN Building, Banex Plaza, Nyanya and other locations within the Federal Capital Territory.

“We cannot easily forget how our armed forces battled the Boko Haram terrorists under the leadership of President Buhari to reclaim our territory and push them to the fringes of Lake Chad where they no longer pose existential threat to our sovereignty.

“I must say the job of securing every inch of our country is yet to be finished. My government will stamp out the remaining vestiges of Boko Haram, Ansaru, banditry and kidnapping gangs. We won’t rest until every agent of darkness is completely rooted out.”

Speaking about the book launch, the president thanked the organisers for puttung the programme together as it afforded him the opportunity to meet with his predecessor for the first time after leaving office.

He described former President  Buhari as  a great man, a patriot and a dedicated public servant, who served the country with dedication and uncommon zeal.

He said: “First of all, I thank the organisers of today’s book launch for providing me the opportunity and the ambience to reunite with my predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, since he left office on May 29, 2023.

“I am therefore extremely happy to receive him here in Abuja. We are all here today to honour a great man, a patriot, a dedicated public servant, who offered his best in the service of our country since he joined the army in 1962 at age 18.

“President Buhari served our country with dedication and uncommon zeal. First as a military officer who offered unblemished service, manning important commands and political positions, and crowning it as military Head of State on 1st January 1984. Second, as a politician who ran four times for the  highest office until he was elected President in 2015.

“When President Buhari was leaving office, he said he would retire to Daura, far  away from Abuja, to enjoy his well-deserved retirement from public service. I remember he added that if his supporters and friends deny him enough rest in Daura,  he would run to the Republic of Niger.

“Well, as you all know, he can no longer escape to Niger Republic because of the border closure.

“After handing over, you (Buhari) said, ‘I will be far away in Daura but if you need me, contact me. I won’t intrude on whatever you are doing. I won’t interfere. I won’t breathe down on your throat.

“We’ve partnered to make democracy flourish in Nigeria, thank you.

“Except when I call him (on the phone) to say, ‘Are you living, are you going to the farm?’, you don’t hear from him (Buhari) either to nominate or intrude in the cabinet or complain about issues. Thank you for being who you are.”

He added: “The authors of the books we are here to present to the public have done justice to the essential Muhammadu Buhari, especially on his tenure and legacy as the 15th President of Nigeria.

“Femi Adesina, who served him as the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, authored one of the books titled:’Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity ( 2015-2023).”

“I particularly thank Femi for using his memoirs to let us into the challenging eight years of the administration and how his principal steered the ship of state.

“The second book that will be presented today is a collection of five volumes book on the Buhari years. The book, “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015-2023)” gives an authoritative account of the stewardship of President Buhari.

“Beyond what the editor of these volumes has recorded as the achievements of President Buhari in his eight years as a democratically-elected President, history will also be kind to him as the leader who promoted local production of goods to grow our economy.

“It will be said glowingly of President Buhari that in his eight turbulent years,  marked by acute shortage of revenue, Covid-19 pandemic that shut down of the global economy for almost two years, his administration embarked on the most ambitious infrastructural renewal for the country.

“President Buhari gave us the second Niger Bridge. He revamped Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He gave us the Lagos-Ibadan and Warri-Itakpe Rail lines. He  completed Abuja-Kaduna rail line and Lekki Seaport. He  built  brand new airports,  among many other landmark economic projects.  The Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway, which he started, will be completed by my administration, by the Grace of God.

“Whatever unresolved challenges faced by President Buhari in his eight  years, our administration will endeavour to resolve them. As I said during the campaigns, I inherited all his assets and liabilities.

“Our administration will continue to work from where President Buhari stopped, to make our country better, create a vibrant economy and secure the environment to bring more prosperity to our people.”

In his speech at the event, Buhari stressed the need for record keeping even as he ran a transparent and accountable administration.

Buhari said: “The two publications launched today: Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, 2015 – 2023, written by Femi Adesina, who served as my Media Adviser for eight years, and a volume of five books, Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015 – 2023), edited by Dr. Udu Yakubu, are worthy to temporarily bring me out of resting in my native Daura, back to the city.

“These books presented today once again exemplify the sanctity of records, and the role they play in documenting facts and figures, achievements and milestones, either in our personal lives, or in the life of

    a nation.

“I told Adesina when he visited me in Daura with an advance copy of

his book, he has done the nation a favour in writing it, as he has provided

a one-stop shop on our stewardship to the country.

    “The same has also

been done by Dr. Udu Yakubu and his colleagues. Without documentation, revisionism wins. Human beings often have short memories, and unless events are recorded in cold print, some people would come and attempt to either distort, or even obliterate recent history.

“But the fact in our favour is that nothing was done under the veil of secrecy. We were as transparent and accountable as possible, being aware of the fact that posterity was the ultimate judge.

“We kept records of our stewardship, knowing that we would always be required to account for the trust entrusted to us. This event today is part of accounting for our two terms in office, and I thank those who have laboured day and night, to ensure that this history is recorded for now and the future.

“Government is a continuum. It is like a relay race. You run your course, and hand over the baton to the next person. This we have done, and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has my support and confidence, in the quest for us to have a country of our dreams, where there is emancipation for our teeming population.

“With the cumulative achievements of government after government, I believe we will get there in no distant time. In our journey to the desired destination, there will be hard decisions taken, and the people would bear some costs.

“We can only seek their understanding, and state that there was no intention to deliberately inflict pain and anguish on anyone. This is why I apologized to such people at the end of our time in office.

“Sacrifices are still being made now, and will continue to be part of our national life and development. Governments will continually seek the understanding and support of the people they lead, for our ultimate good and goal.

“Let revisionists not rejoice that they have the ultimate say in the bid to distort history. Facts and records will ultimately prove them wrong. When some people engage in deliberate falsehood and distortion of facts that pertain to our tenure in office, I take solace in the fact that records are there, and will remain inviolable.

“I remain committed to our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I have abiding faith in the strength, unity and future of Nigeria.”

Adesina’s book was reviewed by one time CNN Journalist of the Year, Shola Oshunkeye while the book on the legacy of Buhari was jointly reviewed by the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Professor Eghosa Osaghae and a Professor of Political Science, Kabiru Mayo.

The launch was chaired by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon and co-chaired by General IBM Haruna.

The launch was attended by a Creme de’la  Creme of the society and top political office holders including

former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abass, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, National Chairman of the All Progressives (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Federal govt inaugurates task Teams on Tinubu’s housing reforms

The federal government on Tuesday, January 16, inaugurated task teams on President Bola Tinubu’s vision for four housing sector reforms.

The housing sector reforms include Housing Institutions reform, the Multi-Agency Project Delivery reform, Land reforms, and the Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa inaugurated the reform teams for the actualisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda for housing and urban development on Tuesday in Abuja.

Dangiwa emphasised that to realize the Renewed Hope Vision Target of establishing a 1 Trillion-Dollar Economy, there must be a prioritization of housing.

According to him, this entails embarking on comprehensive reforms in the housing sector to address systemic and prevailing issues that have contributed to underdevelopment.

He said: “First is the Housing Institutions Reform Task Team. The task of this Team is to develop a robust framework for ensuring that housing agencies under the supervision of the Ministry are optimized to deliver effectively on the Renewed Hope Vision for the provision of quality, decent and affordable homes to Nigerians.

“This includes a thorough review and facilitation of necessary legislative amendments of relevant housing industry laws including the National Housing Fund (NHF) Act,1992, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) Establishment Act, 1993, Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Act,1973, and PenCom Act (to allow for increased investment in housing). The Team will also map out strategies for driving the nationwide adoption and passage of the model mortgage foreclosure law in States.

“Second is the Multi-Agency Project Delivery Task Team. The aim is to ensure that all housing agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development work collaboratively towards optimizing their strengths to deliver decent and affordable housing to Nigerians. Part of its Terms of Reference includes developing a comprehensive strategy and roadmap for the construction of at least 50,000 new houses per year for a start through multiple funding sources.

“Third is the Land Reforms Task Team. This Team is tasked with developing a blueprint that will aid the sustainable implementation of much-needed reforms necessary for streamlining land administration and ensuring easy, cost-effective, and efficient access to land in Nigeria.

“Fourth is the Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs Task Team. The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is setting up the Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs Task Team in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda to boost building materials manufacturing in the country towards ensuring economic growth, creating jobs, reducing dependency on imports, and lowering the cost of construction materials and housing delivery.

He stated: “Primarily, their job is to conduct a thorough assessment of the current state of the building materials manufacturing sector in Nigeria, including existing facilities, capacities, and key players. They are to also identify challenges and opportunities within the sector.

“The result will be a blueprint that will ensure sustainable implementation of reforms for the sector and the establishment of building materials manufacturing hubs in each of the six (6) geo-political zones across the country. This may include feasibility studies on the most viable locations for the hubs within each zone for siting of housing projects.

“The Task Teams have been carefully constituted to include all relevant stakeholders, such as agencies of government, professional and regulatory bodies, the academia, industry experts, traditional rulers, and other groups. The goal is to tap from the wealth of knowledge and experience of these relevant sectors and individuals, and come up with strategies that are inclusive, wholesome, and can stand the test of time.”

  • Civil societies laud Tinubu over Supreme Court judgments

Civil societies laud Tinubu over Supreme Court judgments

The Nigeria for Peace (N4P), under the auspices of civil society organizations, has written to President President Bola Tinubu following the recent Supreme Court judgments, stating that his non-interference in the cases prevented crisis

The CSOs, comprising patriotic individuals and peace-building practitioners nationwide, expressed their unwavering belief in the unity, peace, and security of the Nigerian State.

They commended Tinubu for prioritizing justice over political alignment, recognizing his role in maintaining these principles.

The open letter to Tinubu which was jointly signed by the convener, Amb Ibrahim Waiya and co-convener, Chief Mulade Sheriff, said Tinubu acted neutral in all elections appeal classes.

The group also applauded the Supreme Court Justices led by Justice John Okoro for saving them from imminent political conflicts and salvaging the integrity of the Nigerian Judiciary.

The CSOs said in the letter: “We wish to start by congratulating you on your victory at the Supreme Court in the 2023 presidential election case. On behalf of the peace-loving citizens and democrats, we commend you for your outstanding demonstration of nationalism, patriotism, and democratic culture by remaining neutral in all the election cases in the Supreme Court, especially those involving states won by opposition parties.

“This has not only proved that you are a true democrat, a patriotic and selfless leader but also a leader who believes in the national interest above partisan and selfish interest,” the CSOs said.

While reminding the president of past events, the CSOs said there were many election appeal cases before the Supreme Court, which originated from Election Tribunals and went to Appeal Courts, mostly challenging the judgments against some Governors who were declared winners by INEC, especially in some opposition states.

“The cases created tension and fear capable of igniting crises if justice were not served. Indeed, we commend your resilience in supporting all efforts aimed at upholding democratic best practices that emphasize the recognition of the people’s mandate.

They further said: “We equally acknowledge the steadfastness of our respected Justices at the Supreme Court for demonstrating patriotism, and for not allowing themselves to be used to suppress the will and mandate of the Nigerian citizens. This singular effort has helped to restore the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary, avert potential political conflicts and chaos in the affected States, and across the country, as well proved that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man and indeed the temple of justice.

“The election petition judgments of 12th January 2024, would be celebrated in the history of Nigerian democracy, as they redeemed the image of the Nigerian judiciary, and saved our democracy from collapse at a time when Nigerians have almost lost confidence in the system. It is our strong belief that the judgments of the Supreme Court in all the election petitions cases have asserted the supremacy of the Apex Court in the land, with highly learned men and women ready to make sacrifices to save our dear country, Nigeria.”

While congratulating the Governors for their victory, the CSOs implore them to collaborate with the Tinubu-led federal government to revamp the nation’s economy and critically address the security challenges confronting the Nation, poverty, as well as focus more on developmental projects that will impact positively on the lives of the people in their respective States.

“It is imperative to suggest to our Governors to run an all-inclusive government, by extending a hand of fellowship to the opposition where necessary.

“We equally wish to recognize the commitment of the security agencies and other stakeholders for their show of patriotism, and for meticulously discharging their duties during the turbulent period of anxiety and frustration in the country,” the CSOs added.

“The day of birth is the day of pain. You go through the labour pain, but when you see or hear the voice of the baby, your pains are gone and you are relieved.

“In the last 40 years, some very few people have been cornering our commonwealth, calling it subsidy.

“I am, therefore, delighted to affirm that my second tenure will be centred on the massive economic development of the state, which will permeate every community or ward.”

Uzodimma said his administration, in the next few weeks, would kick off the initiative through the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI).

He added: “Consequently, within the first 12 months of the current tenure, every community in the state will feel the impact with at least one significant project fully executed for them.”

After, President Tinubu signed the anniversary register and released white pigeons, symbolising peace, before receiving the national salute upon departure.

The parade and wreath laying ceremony is the culmination of the 2024 AFRD celebration, which commenced on October 25, 2023, with the launch of the emblem by President Tinubu.

During this event, the President announced the approval of N18 billion for the Group Life Assurance benefits and other entitlements for families of fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Akpabio, Abbas: Armed Forces deserve respect

Akpabio paid glowing tributes to fallen heroes, saying they deserve honour and respect.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, he said: “Nigerians owe their fallen heroes, serving and retired military personnel absolute honour, respect and in fact, a debt of gratitude because it is not a fluke for people to offer their lives in defence of their countrymen and women to live in peace and harmony.”

Abbas and his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, hailed the contribution of the Armed Forces to nation-building, describing them as one of the best in the world.

Abbas said while parts of the country still experience security threats, the Armed Forces have risen to the occasion most times.

He, however, urged the military, security and intelligence agencies to do more in securing lives and property, which he noted is the primary responsibility of the government.

The Speaker mourned security agents who had died in the line of duty, describing their deaths as heroic sacrifices.

Kalu said said the armed forces have made invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the country.

He also paid glowing tributes to the fallen heroes who died in the course of defending their fatherland, saying that their efforts would not be in vain.

    Governors hail armed forces

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto said Nigeria is not oblivious of the contributions and sacrifices of its fallen heroes towards the unity and stability of the country.

“We wouldn’t have been where we are today on the map of the existing peace and nationhood without them,” the governor said night at the launch of the 2024 AFRD Emblem.

The launch raked in over N55 million in support of retired military personnel under the Nigerian Legion platform and families of the fallen heroes.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq hailed security personnel on the efforts to make Nigeria safe.

The governor said: “They hardly sleep at night in the barracks, bushes, and offices.

“We have to appreciate them and their families, and their tremendous roles.”

Delta Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, led top military officers and others to lay wreaths at the statue of the Unknown Soldier in Asaba, the state capital.

The governor, who arrived at the Cenotaph, the venue of the solemn ceremony, inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Air Force, Navy, and members of the Nigerian Legion.

A minute silence was observed while a 21-gun salute was taken in honour of the departed heroes of the country.

The high point of the event was the release of pigeons by Oborevwori, signalling peace and the people’s determination to avoid any action that could lead to violence or war.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani pledged support to the war against banditry.

He spoke at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

“Today’s event offers us the opportunity to honour our veterans. It also allows us to reflect on the sacrifices, bravery and commitment of our fallen heroes who lost their lives in the defence of our territory integrity,” he said.

    Obi: prioritise their welfare

Also, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in a statement on his official X page, urged the military to remain resolute in their resolve to conquer insecurity.

He also urged leaders to ensure that the welfare of the armed forces and their families are well taken care of.

“On this Armed Forces Remembrance Day, I join other Nigerians in appreciating our military men who, to ensure peace and security within our borders, are willing to pay untold sacrifices.

“Today, we encourage them to remain resolute in their resolve to conquer the ugly monster of insecurity currently ravaging our dear nation.

“We remember especially our fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the peace, unity and territorial integrity of our dear nation.

“We appreciate and honour them for their heroic deeds while showing love and support to their bereaved families.

“Great nations are built by rulers, citizens and the protectors of freedom – the military.

“Our story as a nation, therefore, will not be complete, without their courageous sacrifices which take them away from the comfort of their homes and the embrace of their loved ones.”

President Bola Tinubu on Monday, January 15, met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the inauguration of Hope Uzodinma as the governor of Imo for his second term in office.

The ceremony took place at the Dan Anyiam stadium in Owerri, the state capital.

Tinubu and Obasanjo were invited to the ceremony by Uzodinma.

During the ceremony, the duo exchanged pleasantries and shook hands.

This was first time Tinubu and Obasanjo will be meeting after the 2023 elections.

In August 2022, Tinubu, then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), met with Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

The agenda of the meeting was unclear but it was speculated that it could be about the presidential bid of Tinubu.

Obasanjo did not support the presidential bid of Tinubu. The former president supported Peter Obi, candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

In 2019, Tinubu asked Obasanjo to retire to his farm in Ota, Ogun state.

Reacting to the picture on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, to President Tinubu said: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo met today in Owerri, Imo state at the swearing-in of Governor Hope Uzodimma for his second term.

“The two leaders have not met since Tinubu visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta on 17 August 2022 during the presidential campaign. What could be going through the minds of the two leaders as they shook hands?”
