“I stand before you to say you have gone through twists and turns of democracy, you have been through some aspects of hard decisions. Each time I watch the news and see one pain or the other, associated with the removal of subsidy, just remember that among you, your families, are pregnant people.

“The day of birth is the day of pain, you go through the labour pain, but when you see or you hear the voice of the baby, your pains are gone and you are relieved.

“In the last forty years, some very few people have been cornering our common wealth, calling it subsidy. I call it wasteful and pilfering. But right now, we are going through the pain, we are sharing that pain.

“In the development plan we have identified priority sectors, including industries and projects, which will accelerate the economic prosperity of our dear Imo State such as the Orashi Free Trade Zone and the supporting businesses such as petrochemicals industries, gas processing facilities, etc.

“Another focus of the plan is to harness our agricultural potentials and exploit the mineral resources and align them to the proposed establishment of ceramic industry and agro processing facilities across the three senatorial districts of Imo State”, he said.

Tinubu’s non-interference in judiciary saved democracy, says Marafa

Zamfara State Coordinator of the Campaign Council of President Bola Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima in last year’s poll, Senator Kabiru Marafa, has said that the non-interference of the president in the judgment of the Supreme Court on governorship tussles has saved democracy and rekindled hope in the judiciary.

The Supreme Court had on Friday, January 12, affirmed the elections of eight governors including Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi State), Alex Otti (Abia) and Bassey Otu (Cross).

Marafa, in a statement he signed and issued in Abuja, on Monday, January 15, said President Tinubu and the justices of the apex court have lived up to the expectations of Nigerians, saying posterity will judge them well for allowing the will of the Nigerian voters to prevail.

He commended the president, who according to the Governor of Kano State, stood his grounds not to interfere with judicial processes despite all pressures to do so by party loyalists.

Marafa said: “It is a welcome development. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has by this singular action of non-interference in the Supreme Court judgement saved the country’s democracy and forestalled the repeat of the 1983 scenario.”

Hailing the justices of the Court, Sen Marafa said they have lived up to the expectations of the Nigerian masses, adding that they have made the country proud and have written their names in gold.

He recalled a similar incident during the buildup to the 2019 general election in which he was then the leading contender for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State.

He said: “I  protested the conduct of the kangaroo primaries and the imposition of candidates by the then Governor Abdulaziz Yari,  the judiciary stood up to the occasion and delivered a landmark judgment that gave the whole state to the PDP opposition party.

“The Judiciary must be allowed to be just and fair no matter whose ox is gored, that is necessary if the political actors want democracy to endure in the country.”

Marafa urged the eight governors to be magnanimous, just and fair in governing their respective states.

He congratulated Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and urged him to work to justify the confidence reposed on him by the people of the state.

Marafa said: “I, hereby, call on the governor of our dear state, Zamfara State to collaborate with His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima and relevant security agencies to restore the much-needed peace and security in Zamfara State. Peace is what our people are yearning for and nothing more.”

“What we learnt from this is for us to work together, join hands and pay attention to our internal security,” Tinubu said.

He promised more robust collaborations between the Federal and Imo Governments in the area of security.

Earlier in a remark after taking the oath of office at exactly 3:22p.m., Uzodimma commended the people for their love and support during the governorship election of November 11, 2023.

He said his oath taking for his second term was a renewal of his covenant with God and the good people of the state.

The governor said that the past four years had been characterised by good management of public funds that had addressed the problem of infrastructure deficit.

“Through the provision of extensive road infrastructure, we have been able to lay a solid foundation for the accelerated economic growth and development of our state,” he said.

According to him, the next four years of my administration will, therefore, focus firmly on deepening our shared prosperity mantra through massive infrastructure expansion to ensure accelerated economic growth.

“I have already signalled this new direction in the 2024 budget in which capital expenditure has the lion share of 491.2 billion naira of the total budget of 591.2 billion naira or 83 per cent of the budget.

He said: “Another focus of the plan is to harness our agricultural potentials and exploit the mineral resources and align them to the proposed establishment of ceramic industry and agro processing facilities across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“My second tenure will be centred on the massive economic development of the state, which will permeate every community or ward.

“We shall kick start this through our Community Economic Development Initiative.

“Consequently, within the first 12 months of the current tenure, every community in the state will feel the impact with at least one significant project fully executed for them.

“Consequently, in the coming weeks, working with the local government council leadership, each community will be expected to identify one project that they want the government to do for them,” he said.

The governor reassured the workers that prompt payment of salaries and pensions would remain a priority to the administration.

He said his priority areas will be on 15 critical sectors needed for the sustainable development of Imo, including road infrastructure, education, health, sanitation, water supply, agriculture and food security.

Others are housing and new cities development, digital infrastructure, market access, industrial policy, safety/security, enabling laws and policies, public financial management and electricity infrastructure.

He called on aggrieved Imo people to bury their differences and work collectively to develop the state.

“Our simple civic obligations, like paying taxes, observing traffic rules and keeping our environment clean can go a long way toward helping the government to succeed.
