    • We’ve initiated programmes to support farmers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday,  urged African leaders to prioritise the Blue Economy to boost job creation and take Africans out of the woods.

Speaking at the 43rd Annual Council of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) conference in Lagos, the President, who was represented by the Minister of Marine and Blue economy, Adegboyega Oyetola  underlined the critical role of the Blue Economy and port development in the collective prosperity of African nations, emphasising that the sector holds immense potential for the West and Central Africa when the ports are fully automated.

The theme of the conference is “The Role of Ports in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)”

Addressing delegates from 24 African countries at the venue, the President added that Africa’s Blue Economy presents the continent with untapped opportunities for job creation, poverty eradication,  growth and development.

Tinubu also urged African leaders to creat the Ministry of Blue Economy in their various countries and tap the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost the economy of the region.

Also, Tinubu said his administration has come up with programmes such as National Agriculture Growth Scheme-Agro-pocket where millions of farmers are supported through training on Good Agricultural Practices, certified inputs such as improved seeds, organic, inorganic fertilisers and irrigation equipments at highly subsidised prices to enhance food and boost farmers’ income.

Tinubu stated this yesterday in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the sixth Africa-Wide Agricultural Extension Week.

He pointed out that, despite national boundaries, the waters serve as a natural source of connectivity, emphasising that the region’s shared destiny and challenges require collaborative efforts to resolve.

The President also underlined the significance of technological advancement in the sector.

He emphasized that automation is crucial for maintaining the competitiveness of ports in the global maritime industry. He highlighted the importance of the Port Community System, which serves as a precursor to the implementation of the National Single Window, as essential tools in streamlining port operations.

He noted that the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) are substantial, while urging African leaders  to work together to eliminate trade barriers and harness these opportunities for the collective prosperity of respective national economies.

His words: “It is with great pleasure and honour that I welcome all the delegates to this historic meeting. We in Nigeria are proud and excited to be members of the Port Management Association of West & Central Africa and the opportunity to host this 43rd Council meeting at a time which coincides with our renewed resolve to transform our maritime potentials to actualities is heartwarming.”

The theme of the conference, Tinubu said, was most appropriate “at this period the continent is eager and determined to reposition the ports for competitiveness.”

He praised the PMAWCA for its role in promoting ports’ cooperation and expressed the Nigerian Ports Authority’s commitment to partnership and support for policies and action steps that will be discussed during the conference.

The President said further that he believed strongly that the cream of industry experts that were assembled by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to do justice to the critical subject would “provide the needed insight through knowledge sharing for us policy makers in the maritime sector to work assiduously towards the realisation of our ports potential.

“As you are aware PMAWCA is an organisation whose mission is to contribute to improvement in the quality of port activities and services of its members in order to promote sustainable socio-economic development of their respective countries and the sub-region.”

Some of the strategies the Association employs to achieve its mission, the President said, “includes cooperation and knowledge sharing on best practices in port management and operations in order to deliver optimum value ship and cargo owners.

The group, he said, is “also leveraging on members’ expertise through technical committees and programmes that create platforms focused on resolving complex port and maritime industry concerns and building greater efficiency and sustainability for ports in the sub-region especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement to which Nigeria is signatory gains traction.

President Tinubu said further that he believes that the Lagos conference “will advance the noble objectives of this enviable Association. In deepening our readiness for the exigent demands and ever widening opportunities inherent in AfCFTA.”

His administration, the said added, “is implementing a policy of full automation of our existing ports as well as pursuing a thorough going port modernisation programme that involves comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction where necessary.

“Tied to this is our implementation of a policy of new ports development as demonstrated by the Lekki Deep Seaport, which apart from being the first Deep Seaport in Nigeria is the first fully automated port at take-off.

The success story of Lekki Deep Seaport, President Tinubu said, “will govern the operationalisation of the already approved Badagry and Ondo Deep Seaports as well as the upcoming Snake Island and Burutu Ports in the country.

His administration, the President said, “is committed more than ever before to exploring the entire gamut of opportunities in the marine and blue economy ecosystem including coastal tourism.

“As some of us are aware only last month, we commissioned the Mission to Seafarers Nigeria in a bid to provide a facility of international standard to provide social, psychological and emotional support necessary for peak performance for crew men and women who sail into our ports from all over the world.

In his opening speech, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Mohammed Bello Koko  echoed President Tinubu’s call for regional cooperation in the maritime sector.

According to him, “The opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) are substantial. We must work together to eliminate trade barriers and harness these opportunities.

The NPA chief gave kudos to PMAWCA for its role in promoting ports’ cooperation and expressed the Nigerian Ports Authority’s commitment to partnership and support for policies and action steps that will be discussed during the conference.

At the event was the Controller-General, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Adewale Adeniyi, Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashi Jamoh, the secretary, national action committee on AfCFTA,  Olusegun Awolowo, members of the National Assembly and other senior government officials.

Represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu  Abdullahi, the president said the aim is to make agriculture market oriented and move away from the subsistence farming practiced by smallholder farmers.

He said the government is seeking to restructure the economy from unnecessary borrowing to finance government programme activities as well as create jobs, achieve economic growth, “prosperity for all,” and end poverty.

While noting that the agricultural extension plays a critical role in bringing relevant and improved technologies developed by National Agricultural Research Institutions (NARIs), inputs suppliers and marketers to farmers, he stated that the ministry has put together the first ever Harmonized Extension Manual in Nigeria and National Agricultural Extension Policy.

The Manual, he said, focuses on how to effectively disseminate and deploy agricultural innovations and technologies to end-users using appropriate extension methods.

He added that the manual will be of great benefit to extension administrators, subject matter specialists, extension agents as well as farmers along the agricultural value chains.

“Our resolve is to develop the agricultural sector towards the attainment of the objectives of SDGs especially those of zero hunger and to improve agriculture and rural productivity. Nigeria’s current plan is to achieve self-sufficiency in food production and reduce dependency on food imports.

“The National Extension Agricultural Extension Policy seeks to provide a pragmatic, effective and efficient demand driven pluralistic, ICT-enabled and market oriented extension service to all stakeholders including youths, women, and people with special needs to optimally use resources to promote sustainable agriculture and socio-economic development of the country.

“The present Federal government recognised the huge potentials of agriculture as a key sector in driving the nation’s economy and as a tool to fight unemployment, hunger and poverty.

“It is against this background that the present administration is pursuing  a 8-point agenda which include food security; poverty eradication; growth, job creation and access to capital amongst others,” he said.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has expressed optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would expand the nation’s economy and lift barriers to investment.

Oyintiloye, a member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), made this known yesterday in Osogbo.

He said what the president needed from Nigerians in fixing the economy “is a little patience, perseverance, endurance and support.”

The APC chieftain urged Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to have faith in the ability of the president to provide steps in solving the challenges confronting the country.

Oyintiloye said the president knew what the challenges were before contesting and he was prepared to tackle them.

He said although the economic policies by the president to put the country’s economy on the rightful path might seem painful, it would put smiles on the faces of the people at the end.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, said the economic hardship Nigerians were facing would soon end.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu have congratulated Ondo monarch  Oba  Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, the Osemawe of Ondo.

The monarch, who turned 70, also celebrated the 17th anniversary of his coronation.

Tinubu, in a personally-signed message to the monarch,  described the Osemawe as an extraordinary agent of positive development.

The message was made available to reporters by the Chairman, Anniversary Planning Committee, Chief Steve Akinretoye.

Tinubu noted that the Ondo Kingdom has been recording tremendous social and economic transformation since Oba Kiladejo ascended the throne of his forebears in 2006.

The President’s message titled: “Congratulatory message on your birthday  and coronation anniversaries”, reads: “I write, with joy, to wish Your Imperial Majesty, happy 70th birthday and to congratulate you on your 17th Coronation Anniversary.

“I recall vividly what it looked like almost two decades ago, when Your Imperial Majesty was practically pulled out from your very successful private medical practice in Lagos, to mount the throne of your forefathers, as the Osemawé and Paramount Ruler of the Ondo Kingdom.

“It is evident that 17 years on, Your Imperial Majesty has filled that expansive office admirably, thus proving that the kingmakers of Ondo, obviously operating under divine inspiration, did not make a mistake in their unanimous choice of you as the next Osemawe. That was in the year 2006.

“Today, no one needs to go too far to encounter the evidence of your impactful reign over the Ondo Ekimogun people. They are visible all over the community, and touch practically all aspects of human endeavour.

“May I emphasize, Kabiyesi, that the Federal Government notes the support you have lent agencies, institutions, programmes, and government officials as they relate with your community over the years.

“We appreciate your commitment, to extending the frontiers of development engagements which you have so very well coordinated in your domain, and with your subjects, both at home and abroad, these past years.

“On a personal note, let me, once again, express my appreciation to you for the two letters of congratulations you so graciously sent to me upon my victory at the February polls, and later, my subsequent inauguration as President.”

Akeredolu noted that the Ondo Kingdom has continued to witness unprecedented development and unmatched peace since Oba Kiladejo was installed, 17 years ago.

In his letter titled: “Goodwill message on your imperial majesty’s platinum celebration, the governor said: “On behalf of myself and my wife, Betty, the government, and indeed the good people of Ondo State, I join other numerous well-wishers to extend our warmest felicitations to Your Imperial Majesty on the attainment of the enviable status of septuagenarian as well as on the occasion of your 17th Year on the throne of your forebears.

“Like many great things in life, the older they get the more enduring they become. That is – certainly very true of Your Majesty.

“In the last seventeen years as the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, the ancient city of Ondo has continued to witness unprecedented development and unmatched peace. It is on record that Your Majesty provided an unparalled leadership when you were the Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas.

“Let me appreciate you, sir, for the good relationship between Kabiyesi and our government. Your counsel to our government from time to time has been found very invaluable and development focussed.

“It is our earnest prayer that Your Majesty will continue to enjoy good health and divine wisdom in providing the much needed leadership for Ondo Kingdom and Ondo State in general.

“It is my great pleasure to join other numerous Nigerians in wishing Your Majesty many more years of fruitful service to mankind.”

  • How Tinubu can deliver good governance by CODIN

How Tinubu can deliver good governance by CODIN

Following the conclusion of all litigations against the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Coalition for Democracy In Nigeria (CODIN) has called on the president to ensure delivery of good governance.

CODIN, in a statement by its president, Comrade Mashood Erubami, congratulating President Tinubu over his victory in the court, said the time of politics was over and that Nigerians are expecting impacting governance in the country.

The Supreme Court had on Thursday, October 26, nullified the petitions of candidates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Alhaji Abubakar, Atiku and the Labour Party, Peter Obi respectively and upheld the INEC declaration of President Tinubu as the elected President of the country.

In his counsel, Erubami, who noted that Nigeria could be set on the right path,  urged the President to Erubami to set new standards for working with the 10th legislative assembly to fight for a good economy, fight against insurgency, against corruption, human rights infringements and abuse of rule of law in all its ramifications.

He said that the reaffirmation of President Tinubu’s election against all the opposition pleas in their petitions represent an untainted electoral and educational eligibility with new found personal integrity.

The group noted that the firmness of the Supreme Court and other court judgments in resolving the disagreements among politicians that participated in the 25th February 2023 election has brought up a new agenda for renewed hope and that represents a strong call on the government for more works on its part to fashion new processes for good governance, which will promote equity, fairness and justice in the land.

He said: “The pro-democracy group claimed that people’s expectations from the affirmed presidency are resident on the trust and confidence on the new government hence it must create an atmosphere of good living, wellness and unity among the people in actualisation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended especially in sections 14(2b), wherein it states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“In addition, President Tinubu should commence working assiduously to renew citizens’ hope firmly in the context of his oath of allegiance while all motions and bills from the National Assembly should be adhered to in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, wellbeing, and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“President Tinubu must as a matter of urgency, commence his mandate delivery with the urgent introduction of how the revenue allocation formulae will be reviewed to reduce the wide gap of monthly allocations between the three arms of government given that the amount accruing to the Federal Government is presently on the high side, a big factor that has created economic strangulation in the states.

“The President should assist his government through bringing the post-election victory speech on May 25, 2023 into fruition, extending the hand of friendship to some of those who contested election with him, particularly picking the best cabinet partners from labour, civil society and the major opposition party whom he referred to as his compatriots so as to form an all-inclusive cabinet that can drive his new project models.”

The group further calls on the President to direct  his  attention on  new ministers to ensure  that they focus on the specific areas of the set mantra of road/rail infrastructure, education, agriculture, poverty eradication,

inclusion of youths/women, while fighting  against corruption and insecurity.

According to the group, the President’s victory as reaffirmed by the Supreme Court 26th October 2023 judgment must be used to serve the people better, reiterating that the only way to satisfy the aspiration of the people is to demonstrate a renewed capacity for hope and assured performance that will earn greatness for the country towards reaffirming  strong commitment to end  corruption.

Tinubu promises to strengthen tertiary education

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening tertiary education to enable it produce graduates of exceptional academic quality who can compete on a global scale.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring high academic quality among Nigerian graduates and the need to provide an environemt conducive for learning.

The President spoke at the weekend during the inauguration of projects at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), both in Bauchi.

The Nation reports that President Tinubu inaugurated six projects valued at over N873.666 million at ATBU and ATAP under the 2021/2022 merged intervention programmes of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The President, who was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, noted that education development is one of cardinal priorities of the current Federal Government under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “We have introduced students’ loan initiative to ease access to tertiary education for indigent students, meeting personally with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to discuss the welfare of Nigerian students and, recently, approving waiver of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ order on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which would pave the way for members of the union to receive part of their withheld salaries.

“These are parts of conscious efforts being made by this administration to address students’ challenges and create industrial harmony between staff unions and the government.

“You will recall that in recognition of the role of TETFund in the development of public tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria and in a bid to further support and strengthen the intervention activities of the fund, the President also approved the implementation of the upward review of Education Tax (EDT) to 3 per cent with effect from September 2023.”

“This will, in no small measure, contribute more to the improved funding of the education sector and development of our public tertiary institutions.

“As we all know, education plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of nations. Therefore, the commissioning of these projects today at the university would in no small measure further enhance teaching and learning and improvement of academic standards.”

  • Reframing Tinubu’s development agenda through diplomacy

Reframing Tinubu’s development agenda through diplomacy

During the build-up to the 2023 general elections, some dyed-in-the-wool critics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had dismissed his policy document or manifesto as something unattainable. On assumption of office, President Tinubu unveiled a more vivid eight-point agenda to turn around the economy and make life comfortable for all Nigerians. In this piece, STANLEY NKWOCHA, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice-President) writes that efforts by the President and Vice-President to realise their dreams of pulling the country out of the woods are paying off through a flurry of economic diplomacy

In his 80-page Renewed Hope policy document released in the build-up to the 2023 general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu listed some action plans.

Top on his priority lists were national security, economy, agriculture, power, oil and gas, transportation and education. He said his objective was to foster a new society based on shared prosperity, tolerance, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to handling each citizen with equal respect and due regard.

And to ensure his campaign promises unfold into a pleasant reality, the President, at the maiden Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in August, unveiled a more vivid eight-point agenda to turn around the economy and make life comfortable for all Nigerians.

Encapsulating the action plans in the 8-point agenda, he relisted the eight priority areas to include food security, ameliorating poverty, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, improving security, rule of law, fighting corruption and improving the playing field on which people, particularly companies operate.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has unleashed a flurry of economic diplomacy stemming from his notion that the prestige of any country among the comity of nations is proportionally dependent on its social and economic realities, which explains why governments around the world embark on missions to create an enabling environment to attract local and foreign investments.

Beyond the avalanche of domestic reforms being implemented to create an investment-friendly Nigeria, the President and his deputy have also assumed the position of Nigeria’s marketers-in-chief.

At the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held from September 20-23, 2023 where he delivered his maiden address to the General Assembly on September 20, President Tinubu shot straight, telling the world that “the greatest economy is Nigeria with immense investment opportunities.”

He noted that Africa is not a problem to be avoided or pitied. He said: “Africa is nothing less than the key to the world’s future.”

The Tinubu government is only five months old in office, but within this period, V-P Shettima and his boss have struck a balance never seen in this part of the globe.

The cumulative effects of this synergy are the positive issues arising from the presidential global engagements that have continued to dominate headlines and possibly for some time to come. Some of the high-hanging fruits, which have resonated well with Nigerians, came in handy by way of the recent bumper achievements recorded by the Nigerian delegation under the leadership of President Tinubu to the 3rd Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum in China, as well as the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue, World Food Prize 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa, United States of America.

In China where significant milestones in the nation’s journey towards economic prosperity were made, V-P Shettima joined world leaders from over 130 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America at the forum to deliberate on the theme “High-quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity.” The Vice-President availed Nigeria of the platform provided by the forum to woo investors for more developmental projects at high-powered bilateral meetings with other world leaders. He also promoted Nigeria’s trade and investment relations in line with the economic development agenda of the Tinubu administration.

One of the most significant breakthroughs was China’s renewed commitment to the completion of the long-awaited Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kano and Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects, as well as the Lagos-Ibadan railway.

This, economic experts believe, will not only revolutionise the country’s transportation sector but also foster regional connectivity and economic integration. Moreover, the commitments in power generation and digital economy mark crucial steps towards addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges and advancing technological innovations, crucial for sustaining long-term growth.

The signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) valued at $2 billion, alongside the $4 billion worth of letters of intent, reflects the substantial inflow of foreign direct investment into key sectors such as technology, automotive and infrastructure, underlining the growing confidence of international partners in Nigeria’s economic potential.

These agreements, which include partnerships with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and various Chinese corporations, are poised to drive job creation, technological advancements and overall economic diversification.

Furthermore, the agreement on the construction of the Lekki Deep Blue Seaport contract is a testament to the enduring appeal of Nigeria as a premier investment destination. Such projects not only bolster Nigeria’s status as a regional economic powerhouse but also solidify its position as an industrial hub; attracting diverse industries and promoting sustainable economic growth.

The collaborations with renowned Chinese companies, encompassing fields such as technology, construction and communications underscore the multifaceted nature of the strengthened Nigeria-China relationship, ushering in an era of enhanced technical capabilities, infrastructure development and knowledge transfer.

At the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue, World Food Prize 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, it was another bumper harvest, as Vice-President Shettima wooed investors from the United States and other countries.

He said Nigeria remains the best place to invest given its 70 million hectares of underutilised arable land, which he said is 75 per cent of the country’s total land mass. He told them that, under President Tinubu’s watch, Nigeria has since demonstrated that the Agrifood sector is a top priority.

An instant gain from the V-P’s engagement in that country was the resolve by an American company, John Deere to invest in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, first by setting up a tractor assembly plant in Nigeria. The decision was taken during a meeting between V-P Shettima and top officials of the firm led by its Vice-President of Production Systems, Mr Jason Brantley.

The meeting was facilitated by the Chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr John Coumantaros, a long-time investor in Nigeria.

Just as one would think it was already enough takeaways, the African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development announced at the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue that they have voted a whopping $1 billion to further deliver on the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs) in 24 states of Nigeria.

President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina said the decision to pump such huge funds was to develop SAPZs in 13 countries.

President Tinubu’s administration’s strategic efforts to create an environment conducive to business and investment have, undoubtedly, paved the way for these remarkable achievements. The emphasis on fostering mutual international cooperation and the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to building robust partnerships that prioritise respect, mutual benefit and non-interference. These are essential pillars for sustainable global relations.

Just as V-P Shettima told the investors in the United States that Nigeria is committed to transforming agriculture as a pathway to tackling insecurity and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, President Tinubu is, indeed, taking the courageous decision to revamp Nigeria’s economy. There may be painful reforms as certain opposition elements are trying to project them before the citizens, but they are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s economy.

Tony Blair, a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, once said: “Anyone can say yes, but the hallmark of leadership is the ability to say no when you should.”

This statement underscores the inevitability of courageous decisions in leadership, and it is a quality that President Tinubu has demonstrated in unmistakable terms.

On the other hand, Vice-President Shettima is another leader who embodies the qualities of loyalty, courage and vision. In a country where tribalism and regionalism are often used to divide and conquer, Shettima remains a staunch believer in the unity and progress of Nigeria.

The VP has consistently demonstrated his commitment to a united Nigeria where every citizen is treated equally, regardless of their tribe or ethnicity.

As the country progresses on this path of growth and innovation, it is imperative to sustain this momentum, ensuring that the benefits of these partnerships are effectively harnessed for the holistic advancement of Nigeria and its people as the power of strategic alliances and international cooperation in fostering sustainable development and economic prosperity cannot be overemphasised.

    • Plan to ensure compliance with government goals in order

The ministerial retreat to introduce members of the Federal Executive Council to expectations from them is an indication that the Tinubu administration would not tolerate sloppiness from the ministers. So much has gone wrong with the government that standards have to be set immediately.

In almost all sectors, Nigeria has lost its pride of place, not only at the global level, but Africa.

Public tertiary institutions are now regarded as glorified secondary schools, with many students hanging on the window panes during lectures and those unlucky to find seats at the back rows unable to hear the lecturers. Laboratories are inadequately equipped, even with basic reagents, and indiscipline is rife among students and the academic staff. Some professors are hardly available for classes as they take up appointments with other universities, especially the private tertiary schools. Without discipline, it is impossible to maintain standards.

In the health sector, the appointment of Professor Ali Pate, a world renowned health administrator as coordinating minister excited so much passion, with many expecting that his assumption of duty would translate to better times.

Both the President and his aides expect that the appointment of tested and trusted hands as Coordinating Minister of Finance and Governor of the Central Bank would resuscitate the comatose economy that has pushed majority of the people below the poverty line. The same could be said of the situation in the security, mining and agriculture sectors.

President Bola Tinubu’s warning that any of his appointees who performs below par would be shoved out is welcome. We hope this would not only be in words, but action as the jury is already out for the ministers in this early days as life has become very hard for the people.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Monitoring, Hadiza Bala-Usman, had given indication that each ministry would be assessed by clearly delineated parameters every quarter starting from next year. At the end of every year, she said, any minister that failed the test would not be spared the rod.

It is good that the President has instituted a retreat to set the ball rolling. Anyone who thinks he could not cope should bail out of the boat early enough to allow the hiring of a more suitable official. The ministers should realise that the job for which they have been employed is to serve and not lord it

over the public. And, they are coming on board at a time that public confidence in public officers is at the lowest ebb. It is their duty to study the system fast enough, come up with how to handle civil servants whose duty is to translate policies into action, execute projects and ensure that budgets are implemented.

It is good that the retreat has afforded all of them the opportunity of understanding the philosophy of this government. While many senior civil servants and heads of extra-ministerial departments and agencies have been in the system for long, they must adapt to the newly enunciated philosophy of this administration.

The ministers do not work alone. As the President is giving them the charge, so should they transmit the same to their subordinates, otherwise, they would fail. They, too, have to come up with measures to assess their lieutenants and whoever fails the test for two consecutive quarters should be shown the way out.

Nigerians are not in the mood for excuses. No appointee should be left in doubt that the country is set for a new dawn.

The subnationals should take a cue from the Federal Government. Trade unions, religious leaders, civil society groups and the media should play the role of monitoring of the ministers and heads of other extra-ministerial groups. A journey of 1,000 kilometers starts with the first step. They should all realise that the time is ticking already.

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to take his administration’s aggressive push for attracting more foreign direct investments and infrastructure boost into Nigeria to Saudi Arabia, where he will attend two bilateral summits.

Briefing journalists at the State House on Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said President Tinubu will be participating in two critical summits; the Saudi-African Summit and the Araba-African, both taking place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia on November 10 and 11 respectively.

According to the President’s spokesman, the events are targeted at different areas of interests, but noted that the outings are going to be critical to how Nigeria takes advantage of the projected potentials of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), market.

He said the Saudi-African Summit’s target will be exploring issues around the economic ties between Africa and Saudi Arabia, including counter-terrorism, agriculture, environment and other areas of mutual concern.

For the second, being the Arab-African Summit, according to Ngelale, will be focusing on expanding infrastructure between both regions and will particularly be paying attention to the establishment of a new high-speed train network between the Arab League of Nations and the African Union countries.

“His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be heading to Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to attend two major summits. The first of which is the Saudi-Africa Summit, at which several areas of mutual concern will be addressed with respect to the economic ties between the regions with respect to the issues of counterterrorism, the environment, agriculture, and many other areas of mutual concern, where we feel much more can be done in terms of accelerating the level of trade and investment between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the African continent.

“Obviously, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is very keen on ensuring that the Federal Republic of Nigeria, within the context of the continent, is in a position to maximally leverage on opportunities that will be afforded by the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, where we will be having a single trade market of over one billion Africans, the expectation, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, is that by the year 2050, our market here on the continent would have surpassed $29 trillion. We believe that action toward that begins now.

“So the President is going to be very active and leading that effort from the forefront. That will be holding on November 10, followed by a very important summit. That is the Arab-African Summit holding on November 11, where His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu in his capacity, not just as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but also as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of Government, will be taking part in the summit, ensuring that he is at the forefront of advocating for really a deepening partnership of the two regions, that is the League of Arab Nations as well as the African Union, with respect to how we can integrate in terms of our infrastructure, how we can facilitate the establishment of a new high speed train network that would league that would tie Arab nations from the Middle East and Northern Africa, to the rest of the African continent”, he said.

Speaking specifically on what Nigeria stands to gain from the outings, Ngelale said projections are on bringing back tangible and stronger economic connections and increased commerce and trade relations, not just between Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but between the country and the entire Arab world.

“Certainly, His Excellency Mr. President is passionate about any areas in which we can really leverage on the massive population and market that not just Africa presents, but that Nigeria itself presents. We are expecting that the outcomes of this summit will lead to very tangible results with respect to increase in trade between not just the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but all Arab nations, and especially the leading economies in Africa, of which Nigeria is now number one.

“So we believe there’s a lot to be gained from these two summits. Of course, as we are there, you can fully expect that you will be briefed on a routine basis with concrete details as to what the outcomes are from not just the Saudi African summit, but also the Arab-African Summit, but obviously with a particular emphasis on what the Federal Republic of Nigeria stands to gain under the leadership of His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The last point I want to make is that His Excellency, Mr. President, is going to be very aggressive, as always, in his promotion and pursuit of new foreign direct investment. It’s no secret what he’s been doing around the world since he assumed office that will continue in Riyadh.

“We will be meeting with investors across sectors, we will be pushing very proactively for new inflows of foreign exchange into the Nigerian economy, through investments in really growth-enabling and labour-intensive sectors of the economy.

“There should be more information on that once we get into Riyadh, but what I want to assure the Nigerian people today is that His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to do everything he can to reinvigorate the Nigerian economy, through the instrumentation of his leading participation in these two important summits”, he explained.
