Tinubu’s reforms designed for economic prosperity, says ex-militant

An ex-militant leader, General Endurance Amagbein, has called on members of the public to embrace all the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu especially the removal of fuel subsidy saying they are designed to guarantee economic prosperity in the long run.

Amagbein particularly told the nation’s labour unions and their leaders to sheathe their swords and support the President’s renewed hope agenda, which he said was well-thought-out to curb wastage.

The ex-militant leader in a statement on Sunday said the President had demonstrated his capacity to revitalise the dying economy.

Amagbein emphasized that the removal of the subsidy was long overdue, asserting that it was a necessary step towards conserving funds for national development.

He commended President Tinubu for his courage in making such a bold decision, noting that previous Nigerian Presidents had overlooked the crucial issue following a lack of political will.

Amagbein, who holds the esteemed title of Adaka the second, called on Nigerians to trust President Tinubu’s sincerity and highlighted the immediate efforts by the President to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal including the distribution of N2bn and five trucks of rice to each of the 36 states.

Amagbein said with the removal of the subsidy, the states were receiving bumper revenue from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

He said: “I am calling on Nigerians to maintain their faith and confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to steer the country towards economic prosperity through this subsidy removal.

“I believe that the refineries will be restored to operation, ultimately reducing the need for petroleum product imports and leading to a significant reduction in pump prices”.

Katsina governor Radda congratulates Tinubu on victory at PEPT

Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his victory at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), saying doubt over his election has been cleared.

The Nation recalled that the PEPT on Wednesday, September 6, affirmed Tinubu’s election after dismissing the appeals of the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), respectively, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

The governor, in a message of felicitation to Tinubu, further observed that the cloud hovering over his legitimacy as Nigerian leader has instantly vanished.

He said: “The verdict of the Tribunal indeed has once again validated the genuine mandate citizens wholeheartedly gave you on February 25, as the pragmatic leader that our dear nation deserves at a time it was battling with a litany of socio-economic challenges.

“With the sound and convincing judgment given by the PEPT, I am sure the cloud hovering over the legitimacy of your election has instantly vanished. However, the task of building a great and prosperous Nigerian society under your visionary watch remains, and is still very much arduous, Sir”

“As such, I, on behalf of the people and government of Katsina State, again rejoice with you over your electoral victory at the PEPT, but tasked you to remain unwavering in your bid to change the appalling narrative of our beloved ‘Africa’s Giant’, like you have started doing via the pro-masses policies and programmes your government launched in the last 100 days’

“May Allah continue to endow you with his infinite mercies, grace and wisdom as you progressively lead Nigeria, while He also makes our dear nation and its citizens enjoy the dividends of your inspirational leadership, in the next four years.”

Soludo hails Tinubu for juicy positions to Igbo despite not voting for him

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state has praised President Bola Tinubu for giving Ndigbo good political appointments, despite losing the states during the election

He said at the weekend during the courtesy visit of the Minister of Works and Housing, David Umahi in Anambra state, that the Ministry of Works to the southeast was huge.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Prof Soludo said: “In politics, you don’t get what you deserve but what you bargain for with votes.

“Given the totality of votes we contributed from the southeast and looking at the ministerial portfolios, we may not have the basis to begin to demand for “juicy” portfolios but the president graciously gave us one of our finest and best, one of the few engineers who pioneered concrete pavement as current standard for road construction.

“Nigeria is a federation. You cannot stay in your state, clap with one hand, and expect noise. You need the other hand which is the federal government, for things to work. With you, Engr. Umahi in the office, you are a perfect round peg in a round hole. Please keep showing your leadership.

“What you said about the possibility of coming back again for us to move around in Anambra State will be fantastic because we have fundamental challenges on road infrastructure and especially how it’s delivered by the federal government.”

The governor reminded the former Ebonyi state governor that all federal roads in Anambra State had failed and begged the attention of the federal government.

Soludo said: “The federal government is staying in Abuja and trying to award road contracts in all nooks and crannies of the country.

“Sincerely speaking, the entire federal roads are all gone. We are currently spending up to N20 billion on federal roads.”

  • Tinubu unsurprisingly wins again

    Tinubu unsurprisingly wins again

No one who read the final written addresses of the three main political parties contesting the Nigerian presidency in the courts expected President Bola Tinubu to lose. Ex-vice president Atiku Abubakar‘s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ex-governor Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) had dragged the president before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) even before the last ballot was cast, insisting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not have declared him president. The reason, they argued was not so much because of insufficient ballots cast in favour of the declared winner but essentially because of ancillary matters like the APC nomination process or a forfeiture case long ago in the United States. And just in case they could get any takers, or the country could be bewitched, the litigants also threw in the farfetched issue of 25 percent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) votes as a prerequisite for victory in the presidential election.

Five justices of the Court of Appeal sat over the consolidated cases and last week gutsily – some said angrily – and unanimously threw away the last legal and political pretensions of the opposition. They let it be known once and for all time that the judiciary would not be intimidated. The petitioners didn’t stand a chance, going by the provisions of the law, but they clutched at all kinds of straws, most of them wafer thin, leaving their fumbling counsels and fanatical supporters puzzled. Few legal experts who listened to or read the presentations of the opposition thought they had any chance of winning. Some supporters, many of them artisans and laymen on the streets, thought otherwise; but their thoughts stood precariously on pins and needles, on nothing but wishes. Sensing that their supporters were undifferentiating, both PDP and LP candidates in the February 25 presidential election appealed to their emotions, declaiming upon the special status of FCT residents, and exaggerating and obfuscating irrelevant court processes in the United States. In the end, all their arguments counted for nothing. Worse, the three parties left standing in the suit against the APC were made to share a fine approximating N84m.

President Tinubu is a very fortunate man. The more the cases against him dragged on, the more strengthened his legal position became, and the more he smelled of roses. In an essentially three-horse race, he won about 37 percent of the votes, a fact some analysts have turned into an argument about legitimacy. But at the PEPC, he won unanimously. Even before the opposition got copies of the judgement, they had, however, signified their readiness to appeal. They will also lose at the Supreme Court, of course. It was not just that the PEPC did a thorough job, it was mainly because both the PDP and the LP, which had previously united under one umbrella but split into three for the fateful election, had nothing significant to rest their cases on or redeem their postulations. No legal expert who knew his onions thought the PDP or LP could win, or that, bowing to the blackmail and intimidation of the opposition, the PEPC could be browbeaten into ordering a rerun. If the president’s luck is sustained, not only will the opposition lose at the Supreme Court, the fines could be bigger than N84m.

In reality, however, Nigeria’s opposition leaders in the PDP and LP are not idiots. They knew they didn’t stand a chance in the election, having been unable to unite going into the poll, and especially when the conspiracy at the highest echelons of government which the PDP had hoped to take advantage of fizzled out badly. They are not stupid to think that by some liberal constitutional interpretations FCT residents could be turned into supermen and bionic women in whose tremulous hands veto power over the rest of the country would be invested. No, they are much smarter than their howling supporters, and in fact secretly held out no hope of a miracle. They embarked on legal adventurism for two principal reasons: to create a groundswell of anger and bitterness against the winner in order to incite the public into either a preemptive revolution or a coup d’etat; or to slow down and weaken the new administration into backing away from implementing courageous and redemptive policies or inquiring into the monumental misdeeds of past administrations. Neither of the two objectives will, however, be realised, regardless of how hard they try.

Apart from being unanimous, the PEPC was emphatic in their judgement. They have left the opposition with no legs to stand on going to the Supreme Court. The PDP and LP know as a matter of fact that they have nothing left to stand on or any straw to clutch at, and even fear that they will be skewered or completely disemboweled for their irrational attempt at intimidating the justices, nay the judiciary as a whole, for ridiculing the justices and their families, and for rousing public anger against them. They feel the amperage of the portents that lie ahead. But they are also seized by a forlorn gloominess that the fire of revolution they had labored so tediously to procure might finally be lit by a fortuitous and careless matchstick.  In addition, they have a number of angry past leaders, disaffected politicians, baleful clerics, and opinion moulders to count on. But here again, their exertions are unlikely to be rewarded, for they misread history very badly and are woeful incompetents at reading the signs of the times.

For about two years before the then aspirant Tinubu won the APC presidential primary, the ruling party, beginning from June 2020, had erected a barricade of such enormity and fierceness against him that few gave him any chance of surmounting. Five years before, the party had also ostracised him, attempted to build a new power elite in the Southwest to supplant his influence, and rallied many of his mentees and friends and associates against him. And when EndSARS came in late 2020, despite beginning as a protest against federal police atrocities, it was also weaponised against him. The house of politics he built seemed to be caving in on him. How he roused himself from his prostrate position to take the battle to his enemies remains a puzzle. What is, however, known is that one after the other he dismantled his enemies, put together a coalition of old friends and new associates, and finally devised political strategies that left his opponents and estranged mentees gasping for breath. After these, heaven simply and brusquely took over. There is no other explanation for the implacable divisions within the PDP, the half-heartedness of the presidency in following through their plots against him, and the failure of all the economic and financial chicaneries which punished the entire nation than it undid him.

Since 2015 when he joined forces with others to secure victory for the APC, President Tinubu had not been defeated in any political combat. Last week’s judicial victory is, therefore, an icing on the cake. In the same manner many clerical and political leaders saw the hand of God in the successful evacuation of about 338,000 beaten and bruised allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk during World War II, many clerics and perceptive analysts now see the hand of God in the 2023 Nigerian elections. They do not conclude that President Tinubu’s victory in all his political battles in the past years is a testimony of his strategic brilliance or ideational infallibility; no, instead, like many great statesmen have appreciated throughout all history, they now sense the hand of forces in their affairs which they cannot rationally explain. Indeed, if the PEPC had last week ordered a rerun, and the PDP and LP had joined forces, they would again be surprised to go down in defeat against all rational permutations and projections. The unseen hand was so pervasive in the 2023 Nigerian elections that any opposition was certain to end up disoriented and spent.

A few more predictions need to be ventured. The PDP and LP conspiracy to delegitimise the Tinubu presidency will continue until and a little after the Supreme Court deals them a mortal blow. But the conspiracy will eventually amount to nothing. The revolution and coups they have tried so disingenuously to incite will also amount to nothing. The Tinubu presidency has admittedly started on a disconcertingly awkward note despite propounding fine policies and assembling a fairly decent team; but in the months ahead, he will settle down to better administrative and even ideological and policy rhythms. The international environment will probably work in his favour and give great impetus to his programmes and policies, and the economy will function at far better capacity and fluidity than previously hoped. His opponents will not only be consistently wrong-footed, they will gradually fade in prominence and acclaim, including Alhaji Atiku, Mr Obi, ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, Bode George and other assemblage of expired and ambitious politicians and opinion leaders. These things will inevitably open the door to the recreation of better organised and more ideological political parties and a more scientific administration which the largest black nation on earth will be confident to talk about. All in all, despite President Tinubu’s knack for winning political battles, it appears that the extreme detestation of his many enemies may be designed to keep him from exalting himself above measure, almost like a thorn in the flesh to keep him fettered or hamstrung.

Obi can’t win Tinubu at appeal, says Umahi

Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi has called on the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi not to contemplate appealing the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) which affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu at the poll.

The PEPT had dismissed the suit filed by Peter Obi and his PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar against Tinubu.

Obi, however, has vowed to challenge the judgement of the tribunal in the Supreme Court.

But Umahi while answering questions from reporters in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Saturday when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Francis Nwifuru as part of his ongoing inspection of federal roads in the south-east, urged Obi not to go on appeal against the tribunal judgement.

He said the LP presidential candidate will still fail in the Appeal court as according to him, he came 3rd at the general election.

The former Ebonyi Governor of Ebonyi claimed God told him that Tinubu will become President of the country in 2023 and it has manifested in his victory.

Umahi said: “Throughout the campaign period and even now, I keep saying it boldly that God told me that Tinubu will be President of Nigeria.

“It was tough here in South East but I am very happy that Tinubu eventually became the President of this country.

“Like I said in Imo State, God has a purpose for everybody. There was John the Baptist, there was Christ and there is still Christ.

“Peter Obi has served the purpose of John the Baptist for the Divine President Bola Tinubu Ahmed, that’s all that God brought him to do this time around.

“So, I advise him not to go to any court of appeal. I am not a Lawyer but the Governor of Ebonyi State is a Lawyer and he has interpreted the judgment and it has left no hope for any appeal.

“Those judges are spirits. They went into everything and dissected them just like getting a coconut and breaking it. You will get the water and everything and get the nut.

“So, I advise him not to go to appeal, he is not even 2nd, he came 3rd at the election. he is our brother. Let South Eastern people come together to support President Tinubu. He made us the number one Minister even when we didn’t vote very well for him.

“But we voted even very well more than other regions because through the calling of John the Baptist, we were able to bring down PDP and that is a victory for APC”.

He called on the south east to key into the centre to be treated fairly like other regions of the country.

Nigeria ready to play pivotal role in G-20 – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed Nigeria’s readiness to play a major role within the G-20, as the body strives to forge a more equitable global order.

Tinubu, who indicated Nigeria’s readiness in his statement during the Day-One of the 18th G-20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, also noted that collaboration and cooperation among countries and regions will make achieving peace and prosperity for nation’s.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu pointed out that the role to be played by the league of 20 strongest economies in forging a new and rules-based world order cannot be over-emphasized.

While acknowledging the vital role of the G-20 in shaping a rules-based world order that promotes shared prosperity and security, President Tinubu emphasized that most of today’s pressing issues are “international in character and cannot be addressed without multilateral cooperation.”

“Therefore, stronger collaboration, cooperation, and partnerships among diverse regions are the pathways to a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future for our world.

“This is why the role and contributions of the G-20 in shaping a new world order that is fair and rules-based can not be over-emphasized. A world that lives as one family, but is divided by staggering income inequalities and uneven access to basic social goods by the vast majority of our people cannot result in a peaceful and secure world where shared prosperity is achieved.

“I hasten to add that such rules and global governance structures of our collective dreams must be collectively designed, collectively owned, and collectively managed. This is consistent with the true spirit of One Family, mutual respect, and sustainable development.

The Nigerian leader congratulated India for hosting the historic summit and for successfully landing on the moon under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He described the achievement as an inspiration to all developing countries of the Global South.

On the issue of African Union (AU) inclusion in the G-20, the Nigerian leader welcomed the decision, saying it “opens opportunities for future membership of the group in a manner that reflects the relative balance of power and inclusiveness of humanity as One Family.

Fuel marketers appeal to Tinubu, NNPC on turnaround of refineries

Independent Marketers branch of the National Union of Petroleum Marketers and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the management of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited to expedite action on the turnaround of the nation’s refineries.

Its chairman, Comrade Oluleye Olayemi made the appeal on Friday while fielding questions from reporters shortly after he was re-elected for a second term.

He emerged unopposed alongside his other executive members during the 5th Quadrennial Branch Delegate Conference of the association which held at Jogor Event Centre, Liberty Road, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

He noted that the turnaround of the refineries would help to reduce the hardship being faced by the fuel subsidy removal among the citizens.

He disagreed with former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose views were made public recently on why the nation’s refineries may never work.

Olayemi said as much as the association supports subsidy removal, the government could have done it in phases after the refineries were made functional.

He described as appalling the situation when someone would say the refineries cannot work.

He said although there may be corruption in the system or process involved, with political will and sincerity, the government can see the turnaround of the refineries.

He lamented that his members are worst hit as Independent Marketers as well as due to the non-functionality of many depots across the country.

He said: “The Branch is in support of the position of the Nigerian Labour and NUPENG National Executive Council on the deregulation policy of the oil and gas industry.

“While the subsidy removal can be said to be a right decision the timing could have been deferred till the refineries become functional.

“The government should have built refineries in phases across the oil-producing states and gradually remove subsidies. We are badly affected by deregulation. We appeal to the government that they should expedite refineries turnaround and maintenance of our refineries.

“We are badly affected as many marketers are not loading and that affected our members who could not attend. Without renovation of the depot, many people will be jobless”

He also appealed to pipeline vandals to desist from the act saying the menace is already rendering many people jobless.

“We appeal to disgruntled elements to desist from vandalising pipeline. The refineries can work”, he added.
