    • By Angula Bishop Reuben

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has commended the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abass, for his renewed commitment to deepening security collaboration with the state.

The governor made the remarks during a visit to the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement shared on his official social media platforms.

Governor Alia said he met the Naval Chief to express appreciation for his recent visit to Benue State and for the Navy’s increasing support amid ongoing internal security challenges across the Middle Belt.

He also congratulated Vice Admiral Abass on his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising what he described as the President’s “exemplary leadership” in advancing national security.

The Governor recalled that the CNS had visited Makurdi on 11th November, 2025 as part of a nationwide operational tour, marking his first official stop since assuming office. Makurdi was selected due to the strategic importance of the newly established Nigerian Navy Special Operations Command (NNSOC), which is headquartered in Benue.

During the visit, the naval chief inspected key military facilities, including the Navy Barracks at Kanshio, the Navy Medical Centre, and the temporary site of the Navy Provost and Regulating School in Makurdi.

Governor Alia also noted that the establishment of the NNSOC stemmed from a request he made in 2024 during an official visit to the former Chief of Naval Staff, where he sought the approval for a Type A Nigerian Navy Operational Base in the state.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with national security institutions to ensure “sustained peace, stability, and the protection of all our people.”

Governor Alia also expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support in the fight against terrorism and other security threats in Benue State, noting that the President’s commitment has remained instrumental in restoring peace and stability across the state.

Tinubu: it’s our duty to build a productive nation, protect Nigeria’s sovereignty

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday told senior military officers undergoing the National Defence College (NDC) Course 33 to build a productive, inclusive and resilient country.

The President stressed that it is the collective responsibility of those in the government and other citizens to “develop enough to protect and strengthen the nation’s sovereignty”.

President Tinubu spoke at the State House in Abuja while hosting members of Course 33 of the National Defence College.

He restated his administration’s resolve to maximise Nigeria’s human, material, and intellectual potential for industrialisation, peace, and broad-based prosperity.

Leading his address with a call for shared national commitment, the President said: “I have listened attentively to your presentation. We must develop future strategic leaders sufficiently equipped with the requisite knowledge and analytical skills necessary to enhance the instrument of national power in a dynamic defence and security environment.”

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said: “It is our joint responsibility to ensure that this nation, Nigeria, is productive, it is governed inclusively, and takes care of the future of our generation yet unborn.

“It is our patriotic duty to look further into the horizon, to be determined and be resilient, to invoke our spirit that can achieve greatness, to train our people, develop our economy, promote industrial development, and ensure that sovereignty is assured, protected, and will remain resilient.”

He urged the participants to see themselves as agents of positive development, promising that the government would continue to provide platforms for inclusive solutions to emerging economic and security challenges.

The President also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening defence institutions to produce strategic leaders capable of managing a dynamic national security environment.

“We are building a political, economic and security future here. We must develop Nigeria,” the President said, assuring that recommendations from the participants’ research—Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security by 2040—would be carefully studied for implementation.

President Tinubu stressed the need for deep analytical thinking and continuous interrogation of national challenges.

“We challenge our intellectual curiosity by being highly inquisitive and looking at what other nations are doing, where we are today, how we got here, and where we are headed tomorrow,” the President added.

On the college’s request for completion of its permanent site, which has been stalled since 2010, The President urged the course participants to exercise patience over the completion of the permanent site of the college.

He promised that the matter would be addressed in due course.

The Commandant of the college told President Tinubu that the theme of Course 33 was: “Strengthening Institutions for National Security and Development in Nigeria.”

The commandant announced that the Course 33 had 99 participants comprising 25 from the Army, 16 from the Nigerian Navy, 12 from the Nigerian Air Force, five from the police and 18 from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as 23 international participants from Africa, Asia, and South America.

He said the college had so far graduated 3,097 participants, comprising military officers from the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Police, as well as friendly African countries.

The leader of the team, Captain M. A. Ahmed, informed President Tinubu that the course’s research topic aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of economic diversification through industrialisation, digitalisation, creativity, and manufacturing.

According to him, the National Defence College sent study teams to over 23 countries worldwide, including eight in Africa, nine in Europe, and six in Asia, to study the indigenous manufacturing sector.

This is due to the sector’s significant role in generating wealth, creating jobs, driving economic development, and contributing to the country’s overall growth.

  • Amaechi’s problem not Tinubu but political irrelevance, says Lagos APC

Amaechi’s problem not Tinubu but political irrelevance, says Lagos APC

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed, with well-deserved contempt, the latest political hallucination from former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, who now claims Nigerians should “mobilise because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can be defeated in 2027.’’

Spokesman Seye Oladejo in a statement yesterday in Ogba, Lagos said: ‘’Amaechi is free to dream, but he must stop mistaking his nightmares for national reality.

‘’Amaechi is a political orphan – disowned in Rivers, irrelevant nationally, and steadily sinking into total political oblivion.

‘’In Rivers State today, mentioning Amaechi’s name in political discussions is viewed as a provocative joke.

‘’A man who has lost his structure, lost his followers, and lost his voice has suddenly found the courage to lecture Nigerians on how to ‘mobilise.’

‘’Mobilise who? The few loyalists left in his WhatsApp group? Politicians who abandoned him the moment he lost the presidential primaries? The same Rivers electorate that no longer take him seriously?

‘’You cannot lead a national movement when your own backyard has padlocked the gate against you.

‘’The truth Amaechi avoids is simple:

his problem is not Tinubu – his problem is political irrelevance. It is always the loudest losers who shout the most about 2027.

‘’Amaechi’s noise is nothing more than the wounded cry of someone who has not healed from the humiliation of 2022.’’

Oladejo said while Amaechi was busy trying to resurrect his collapsed career, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was doing the actual work of rebuilding a nation: NELFUND unlocking education for millions. CREDITCORP boosting SMEs nationwide. Record FDI interest from Qatar, UAE, Europe and the Ogunlesi-led group. Highway, rail, port and aviation modernisation on an unprecedented scale. Agriculture, mining and security reforms stabilising Nigeria’s future.

‘’This is why even opposition voters now admit – privately, though grudgingly – that Tinubu is miles ahead of any contender.’’

Oladejo said Amaechi could not preach mobilisation without a platform.

He added: ‘’The question Nigerians should ask Amaechi is simple: Where is your political structure? Where are your followers? Where is your relevance?

In politics, you cannot give what you don’t have.

‘’Amaechi cannot mobilise a nation when he cannot command a polling unit.

Amaechi’s sudden activism is a familiar script: failed politicians always imagine a revolution when they can no longer win elections.

‘’But Nigerians know better, 2027 will not reward bitterness, betrayal or political tourism. It will reward leadership, courage and results. Tinubu has all three in abundance.

‘’Nigerians are not fooled. You don’t defeat a performing President with a disgruntled politician who has lost his home, base and relevance.

‘’Amaechi’s statement is not a rallying cry – it is a cry for help. Tinubu cannot be defeated. Amaechi cannot be resurrected.

    End of story.’’

Tinubu okays building of Itawure-Aramoko-Ado, Aramoko-Ijero-Ido roads

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the inclusion of Itawure-Aramoko-Ado Ekiti and Aramoko-Ijero-Ifaki Ekiti roads building in the 2026 Budget.

A letter to this effect has been forwarded from the Office of the President to the Minister of Works, David Umahi. Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji was also copied.

The development followed the visit of Governor Oyebanji and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday where issues concerning the condition of federal roads in the state were discussed.

There have been public outcries and deliberate misinformation over the deplorable condition of some federal roads in the state, particularly Itawure-Aramoko-Ado Road.

The Federal Government has awarded three of such roads in the state and contractors have been mobilised to site, while the Governor Oyebanji administration has built one of them, Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki Road, in addition to dozens of other inter-city and intra-city road projects it has embarked on in the last three years.

When built, the two newly approved roads will further ease travelling, enhance connectivity across parts of the country, boost commercial activities and open up the state to greater economic opportunities and development, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu and the Shared Prosperity Agenda of the Governor Oyebanji administration.

Governor Oyebanji, on behalf of Ekiti people, is thankful to President Tinubu for his strategic intervention in the socio-economic and infrastructure development of Ekiti State, as well as other support the President has provided for the state.

The Government of Ekiti State, under the leadership of Governor Oyebanji, is committed to the welfare and well-being of the indigenes and will continue to collaborate with the Federal Government, institutions, private sector players and development agencies in its development efforts.

Tinubu to editors: champion national unity, report boldly

With a charge to editors to report boldly, champion unity and uphold integrity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday inaugurated the 21st Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (ANEC 2025).

Tinubu, the first President to have declared the NGE’s conference open, spoke at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, venue of the event themed: “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors”.

He advised the editors to use the power of the media to project a positive image of the country. He described the press as a vital partner in his administration’s efforts toward national renewal and democratic consolidation.

The President urged editors to be conscious of their critical responsibility in nation-building, noting that the stories they tell shape how the world perceives Nigeria, and how Nigerians perceive themselves.

“It is our country. What should be worrisome to you is the image of the country we project to the outside world. Your institutions must help build a nation of credibility and integrity.

“Poverty will not define us, we shall overcome it. We are doing something about terrorism and banditry, inspiring our armed forces and encouraging them to defend the sovereignty of this country,” Tinubu said.

He maintained that the administration’s economic reforms, including subsidy removal, currency unification, and upcoming fiscal measures, were part of a deliberate strategy to restore confidence in the Nigerian economy and improve citizens’ welfare.

“On the economy, we know there is more work to do, and we remain focused on ensuring that growth translates into real improvement in the daily lives of all Nigerians. “However, economic reforms and institutional improvement alone cannot give us the nation-building we require. Nation-building requires cooperation, truth, and a shared understanding that our future is tied together,” he said.

Responding to the request by the guild for tax reliefs and other incentives to sustain the media, Tinubu assured that his administration would consider appropriate policy adjustments.

“I’ve listened to the concerns of the Guild regarding corporate tax review, VAT extensions, media tax breaks, and affordable loans through the Bank of Industry. We will discuss these as part of our broader reforms to support media digitization and press freedom”, the President said.

He urged editors to lead by example in professionalism and ethics, saying, “let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair. The stories we tell ourselves as a nation influence the country we become.”

The conference brought together more than 400 senior journalists and communication professionals from across the country.

NGE President, Mr. Eze Anaba, Editor of Vanguard, appealed to the Federal Government to grant tax reliefs, VAT exemptions, and access to low-interest loans for media organisations. Describing the media as “the heartbeat of democracy,” Anaba warned that the industry’s financial distress threatened its constitutional watchdog role. “Without economic sustainability, our constitutional and social responsibilities become ineffective. We seek legislative and executive assistance to make our businesses viable while performing our public duties,” he said.

He proposed a range of fiscal measures, including a five-to-ten-year corporate tax relief, VAT exemptions on essential media equipment, and tax incentives for companies that advertise in Nigerian outlets.

“This is not a bribe to the media. Across the world, governments support their media to stay viable. We appeal to Your Excellency to incentivize corporations to advertise in local media through tax credits. This will strengthen investigative reporting and reduce dependence on foreign grants,” he explained.

Anaba also called for the repeal of laws that hinder press freedom and the creation of a Media Freedom and Safety Charter backed by all arms of government. He emphasised that journalism should be treated as a public good deserving of targeted developmental support.

“When the press thrives, democracy breathes; when the press is stifled, democracy suffocates,” he said, reaffirming the Guild’s commitment to professionalism, ethical reporting, and national unity.

Delivering the keynote address, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, urged editors to recognise their decisive influence on the credibility of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on the topic “2027: Editors as Catalysts of Democracy, National Cohesion, and Electoral Integrity,” Uzodimma stressed that “electoral integrity begins with editorial integrity.”

He warned that sensationalism, misinformation, and divisive reportage could undermine public trust in democracy. “You wield moral power that cannot be outsourced to INEC or the security agencies. The picture you paint of 2027 is what Nigerians will expect,” he said.

The governor urged editors to prioritise accuracy over speed, verification over virality, and context over clickbait, stressing that “national interest must remain your editorial north star.”

He also linked responsible journalism to economic stability, noting that truthful coverage of reforms help attract investment and build confidence. “When you highlight facts that show reforms are working, you are contributing to nation-building, not propaganda,” he said.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, described editors as vital partners in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He said the administration had maintained an open media environment where “not a single radio or television station has been gagged or shut down for dissent.” Idris announced that Nigeria had secured hosting rights for the International Media and Information Literacy Institute, a global platform to promote responsible journalism and ethical media practices.

“We are leveraging this opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s progress and leadership in shaping a more discerning global media landscape,” he said. The Minister urged editors to tell the Nigerian story with balance, truth, and optimism, assuring that the administration’s reforms aim to build “a stronger foundation for prosperity and shared national purpose.”

Co-chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar III, and Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of ThisDay/Arise News Media Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, the two-day conference features panel discussions on law, politics, national security, and the evolving media landscape, with distinguished scholars and industry experts as speakers.

The NGE presented plaques to President Tinubu, Minister of Information Idris and Imo Governor Uzodimma in recognition of their support and contribution to the growth of the Guild.

    The  conference ends today.

  • Yar’Adua family visits Tinubu

    Yar’Adua family visits Tinubu

The visit of the Yar’Adua family to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Aso Villa, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) rekindled the memory of the political bond spanning over three decades.

Led by Senator Abdul Aziz Yar’Adua, the family presented to the president the portrait of their matriach, Madam Asabe, who received him during his electioneering tour of the North in 2022.

The unique woman – widow of Musa Yar’Adua, First Republic Minister of Lagos Affairs, and mother of Gen. Yar’Adua and former President Umaru Yar’Adua – passed on on September 24 last year. Life was full of ups and downs for her. But she bore all with philosophical calmness.

It was possible that Asiwaju’s ties with the Yar’Aduas started during the Third Republic when he joined the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), the most formidable political caucus in the proscribed Social Democratic Party (PDP), led by the Katsina-born General.

In that era, Asiwaju Tinubu was a senator, Umaru was a governorship aspirant and Shehu was a leading presidential contender.

Yar’Adua’s bid for the highest office crumbled. He was jailed over a phantom coup. He remained a factor in the prison where the Sani Abacha regime felt the heat. The General never returned alive.

Although President Tinubu and the younger Yar’Adua, Umaru of the Peoples DemocraticParty(PDP), belonged to different political parties in the early part of this Fourth Republic, he never supported the move by the 2007 Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to challenge his presidential victory, as a mark of respect for Shehu.
