In Maiduguri, a Kanuri cap for Tinubu

He was in Borno State to inaugurate projects but Asiwaju Bola Tinubu ended up with a Kanuri cap on his head and a doctors’ quarters named after him. It was a mark of the warm reception he received, TUNDE RAHMAN reports

He moved with the agility of a 40-year-old. He was strong and sprightly. For over six hours he was moving from one point to another, from one Borno remote village to another, inaugurating project after project. The strength and agility he demonstrated surprised not a few. At some point, some people began to stay back in the vehicles to watch proceedings. But not Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He kept on surging forward. He did not betray any tiredness; he was his usual self, strong and sprightly. He would alight from the car swiftly, head for the next port of call, deliver his speech brilliantly and inaugurate the project with admiration. The former Lagos State governor was in Borno State from Monday, March 6 to Tuesday, March 7 to inaugurate some of the projects embarked upon by Governor Kashim Shettima.

In Borno, he received a hero’s welcome. From Maiduguri International Airport to the venue of each of the numerous projects inaugurated on the occasion and to Borno State Government House where he was accommodated during the two-day visit, the reception accorded him and his entourage was warm and massive.

It must be pointed out that the visit had been planned for a long time and was arranged primarily for the All Progressives Congress National Leader to inaugurate the projects executed by Governor Shettima, and nothing more. Tinubu is not the only one lined up to inaugurate Shettima’s projects. But he was the one who set the project inauguration ball rolling for Governor Shettima, and admiringly so. Other personalities are also in line to inaugurate projects at a later date.

    Maiduguri Airport…

    the red carpet

Tinubu and his entourage arrived at the airport in Maiduguri around 11 am that fateful Monday. On the entourage were APC Interim Chairman and former Osun State governor, Chief Bisi Akande; Political Leader and former Presidential Liaison Officer, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, the Muttawali Borno; Senator Gbenga Obadara from Ogun State and a few of Tinubu’s aides including this writer.

They arrived into the waiting hands of Governor Shettima, his cabinet members and security men. There were entertainers in place. A red carpet was laid for him from the tarmac to the vehicle waiting to convey him. The governor more or less shut down the entire state machinery for the APC leader. Everybody that is important in the state government was at the airport. The issue was not who was there, it was who was n’t and missed the epoch-making ceremony. Many say that kind of reception is uncommon in the history of the state.

    Projects, projects & more projects

Airport reception and introduction ceremonies over, the work, which brought the august visitors to the state, began in earnest.  The train moved from the airport directly to the first port of call: the Benisheik General Hospital, some 25 kilometres away. The hospital was inaugurated amid celebration. Destroyed by Boko Haram insurgency, it was rebuilt by Governor Shettima to provide healthcare to the people and help in elongating their lives. A total of 432 resettlement houses for victims of Boko Haram insurgency, 26 luxury apartments for medical doctors and 13 schools, general hospitals and primary healthcare centres were inaugurated by Tinubu. Most of the projects are in five villages of Ngamdu, Benisheikh, Mainta Kururi, Tassukawu, Mainok and Auno located in Kaga and Konduga Local Government areas of the state. In these villages, you find the schools, general hospitals and health centres completely ruined by Boko Haram now rebuilt by the governor.

The classrooms were well equipped. There was a special emphasis on the girl-child education. Residential houses were built for teachers. There is also arrangement for school-feeding in place in the state. Some of the projects also centre on agriculture-projects like 10ha drip irrigation scheme, fish ponds, etc.

    From Benisheikh to Jimitilo

From Benisheikh, Tinubu and his entourage proceeded to Jimitilo Town to officially declare open the Jajal Primary School. From Jimitilo, the team moved to Auto for the inauguration of Trampolin Fish Ponds, Auno 10ha Drip Irrigation Scheme, Auto Clinic and Housing Estate. From there, all roads led to Jakana Town where Jakana 10ha Drip irrigation Scheme and Jakana Primary School were formally opened.

The team eventually returned to the Government House around 6 pm on that first day to freshen up for the dinner organised for Tinubu and his entourage. The dinner was laced with cultural displays by various groups including the Yoruba group with dancers and drummers, who the Master of Ceremonies said had lived in Maiduguri for over 30 years. “They were not brought from Lagos or any of the Yoruba states. They have lived with us for more than 30 years. They are Kanuri-Yoruba,” he said to a wild applause.

    ‘Shettima confronting extant challenge boldly’

It was at the dinner that Tinubu gave one of his best speeches in recent times. Speaking extempore, he said: “It is a great honour for me to be here. I’m completely overwhelmed by the reception given me and my entourage. I was invited to inaugurate projects by a governor committed to his people. Governor Shettima is somebody I have so much respect for.

“When I told a friend I was coming to Borno State, he asked if that was not where Boko Haram still engaged in occasional attacks. I said I would honour the invitation. I said Governor Shettima is a highly committed and courageous leader who is making changes in spite of the challenge.

“He is confronting the new challenge boldly, the challenge of some shadowy and amorphous young people being used as pawns by a defeated Boko Haram engaging in end games.

“Yes, there still a challenge but Governor Shettima has refused to be cowed. Governor Shettima’s story is not written yet. His leadership story is just unfolding for the world to see. What happened here would have weighed some others down. It would have discouraged some others.”

To Governor Shettima, he said, “But you are not discouraged. You are determined. You are rebuilding the infrastructure that had been brought to ruins by Boko Haram, which is even more difficult. You are giving your people a new lease of life. I salute your courage.”

Those gathered at the dinner held inside an expansive hall within the Government House applauded the APC leader at every turn. The audience included members of the State Executive Council, who had earlier taken turns to give Asiwaju and his team further briefing on their projects, members of Borno Elders Council, traditional rulers and party leaders.

Tinubu continued: ”The projects I inaugurated are people-centred projects. For instance, the hospital I opened at Benisheik would help in providing good health and in elongating the lives of the people. I always hold the view that the provision of health services to the people is one of the rights of the people. Governor Shettima, you have reinforced that belief by what you have done.

“I thank you for inviting me to come here. Thank you for the honour and hospitality you have given me and our team. Thank you for the good leadership you are demonstrating here. Thank you.”

    Extraordinary humility

But it was Shettima’s profound speech, which set the tone for that speech by the APC Leader. The governor, who spoke first, began by paying tribute to Tinubu for his humility, noting that the attitude of his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, reveals the man in him. This is how he put it: ”There is an African saying (I think from Ethiopia) that often times, the true nature of a very powerful man, is easily seen from the character of his favourite wife. I recall that on Wednesday, 25th of November, 2015, about 10 Governors, mostly of the APC attended the funeral of Mama H.I.D Awolowo in Ikene, and after that funeral we all drove to Lagos in a bus straight to the residence of our National Leader, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in Ikoyi. We actually went to see him off since he was inside the bus with us to the funeral.

“I noticed that as soon as our bus reached the house, Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu started rushing; in fact she was practically running to enter the house. She was completely acting in a true fashion of an African Woman. I kept wondering why she was in such a rush. As the wife of our National Leader, I was expecting the usual slow and proud walk of wives of powerful men. She had every reason to show pride after all, her husband is our leader and most of us, the Governors were all holding back ourselves in submission to the aura of Asiwaju.

“To the shock of all of us, by the time we entered the residence of Asiwaju, his wife had moved straight into the kitchen in the midst of cooks, and you could see how free and friendly she was with the cooks. She began to bring food to our table by herself and some of us were not comfortable but she insisted. To our greater shock, she insisted on dishing out the food to each of us and members of our delegation. She served not less than 30 persons and also picked dishes herself to convey food to some of our aides seated outside. I must confess that my experience that very day was my closest contact with extraordinary humility in a wife of a very powerful man”.

    Rescue from Alhaji Allah

Shettima also spoke about why the state decided to honour Tinubu not only by inviting him to come and inaugurate projects but also by naming the doctors’ apartments after him. He said it was to appreciate him for rescuing the APC in Borno ahead of the 2015 elections from the grip of one man he called ‘Alhaji Allah’. He said as governor, he succeeded in taking control of the Borno APC in 2015 largely because Tinubu refused to support the game plan of the ‘wealthy tyrant’.

He said: “For us in Borno State APC, I must confess, that we owe our political freedom and independence to not only our firmness but importantly, to the wisdom and sincerity of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Someone has asked me yesterday and sought to know our reason not for inviting Tinubu for commissioning of projects but for naming a project after him in Borno State. I replied the person in five words by saying, it’s our show of gratitude.

“Naturally, the person asked me, gratitude in what sense. I explained that after the APC was created in the build-up to the 2015 elections, we firmly resisted serious attempts by someone who wanted to completely hijack the entire party machinery with total disregard for our existence. But despite our resistance, that person would probably have had some oxygen if he had secured the support of Asiwaju. From day one, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was opposed to political tyranny in Borno State and was in support of our political freedom and democratic liberty”.

Early on Tuesday, Tinubu proceeded to inaugurate the doctors’ apartments, named after him. It was again amid celebration. The quarters contain 26 apartments, in five sets of three-storey buildings. Speaking at the event, the APC leader thanked Governor Shettima for remembering the doctors. He said providing a good accommodation for the doctors was an encouragement for provision of quality healthcare services. He also said the gesture of naming the apartments after him would remain etched in his memory.

Before leaving the Government House, Asiwaju Tinubu removed his traditional trademark Yoruba cap for the Kanuri cap gifted him by Governor Shettima. It was the first time many would see him don a cap different from his popular cap. It was in honour of the governor. After the opening of the doctors’ quarters, the delegation headed for the airport for departure formalities. Governor Shettima and his cabinet members were again complete at the airport to bid Asiwaju farewell.

    Situation in Maiduguri

Now, how was Maiduguri generally, you may ask? It seemed generally calm. There are people on the streets. You would also glimpse security men including civilian members of the Joint Task Force at every turn. But the people still live in awe of Boko Haram suicide bombers. There are reports of suicide attacks in parts of the state and Maiduguri does not seem completely immune from the attack. Boko Haram is still engaged in desperate antics. Governor Shettima knows this so well. In his speech, he pleaded with Asiwaju and the authorities in Abuja to complete the job. Boko Haram should not be allowed to rear its ugly heads again, he said. The dreaded sect should be wrestled to the ground completely and exorcised.

  • Tinubu pays tribute to Onukaba

    Tinubu pays tribute to Onukaba

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lamented that with the demise of former Managing Director of Daily Times, Adinoyi-Ojo Onukaba, the media has lost one of its best and brightest.

He added that with Onukaba’s death, the community of creative writers has been robbed of one of its leading dramatists and the rank of progressives has been depleted.

Tinubu, in a special tribute to the late Onukaba, said the late foremost journalist was full of life and “ever bristling with ideas”.

The tribute was entitled: “Onukaba: Never in the Past Tense”. It was personally signed by Tinubu.

The former Lagos State governor said: “Since I was apprised of the heart-rending news of the sudden and unexpected demise of my very good friend and associate, Dr. Adinoyi-Ojo Onukaba, I have been unable to bring myself to conceive of him in the past tense.

“Onukaba was so full of life, ever bristling with ideas.

“Following the recent Day of Tributes and Eighth Day Fidau Prayers held in his honour by his professional colleagues and friends in Lagos and Abuja respectively, I find myself unable to live in continued self-denial.

“Indeed, Onukaba died, in very painfully sad circumstances, on Sunday March 5, 2017, four days before his 57th birthday.

“I had known Onukaba over the years, since the early days of his most illustrious journalistic career. Our relationship, however, grew stronger with the advent of democratic rule in 1999.

“As Lagos State Governor, operating from the Government House in Alausa, Onukaba, who served as Managing Director of the Daily Times of Nigeria Plc, was a shouting distance down the road in his Agidingbi office. Our paths crossed regularly as he sought to breathe a new lease of life into the nation’s foremost newspaper conglomerate.

“He kept in touch even after our exits from government and we usually shared views on his political project in his bid to lead Kogi State.

“The tragic demise of Adinoyi-Ojo Onukaba leaves a humongous lacuna not only in his biological family, but in the minds and psyche of all of us who knew him and interacted with him in his brief but eventful life.

“The media has lost one of its best and brightest; the community of creative writers, where he was a luminous figure, has been robbed of one of its frontline dramatists; the rank of progressives has been depleted by the exit of this unyielding optimist.

“With the outpouring of grief and pledges of support for his young family and legacy, I am reassured that Onukaba will not die in our minds and in our thoughts.

“May God forgive him his sins and grant his soul peaceful repose, Amen.”

  • Tinubu: He was a distinguished governor

Former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described General Samuel Ogbemudia, who died on Thursday night as a very professional and disciplined military officer.

He praised Ogbemudia’s record of infrastructural development as governor of old Mid-western region, saying it was still being appreciated and talked about till today.

In a condolence message by his media office at the weekend in Lagos, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader said:  “Though we never wish that our elders leave us even at an advanced age, General Ogbemudia lived to the age of 84. We are not to mourn his death but celebrate his life and times.

“General Ogbemudia was a very professional and disciplined military officer. He played a strategic leadership role in liberating the Midwest region from the hands of the Biafra troops.

”We have lost an uncommon patriot and nationalist who fought with former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to keep our dear nation as one.

”As governor, General Ogbemudia’s record of infrastructural development in old Midwest region is still being talked about till this day.

“He showed his love for education as a catalyst for human capacity development by creating the Midwest Institute of Technology, now University of Benin.”

Tinubu added:  “Gen. Ogbemudia was a father to all. He nurtured so many young men and women in politics. It was no surprise, therefore, that he commanded respect from across the nation.

”He will be sorely missed by the good people of old Bendel State who benefited immensely from his socio-political and economic footprints across the region.

“I offer my condolences to the family he left behind, to Governor Godwin Obaseki and the good people of old Bendel State and Nigerians in general”.

  • A symbol of unity, says Tinubu

A symbol of unity, says Tinubu

Former Lagos Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the late Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo as a symbol of Nigeria’s unity.

In the statement by his Media Office, the All Progressives National Congress (APC) National Leader said: “Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo was a committed father, true patriot, elder statesman and untiring leader with great acumen.

“Though he was proud to be a Yoruba man, General Adebayo was a symbol of unity in the country. He canvassed against the use of force in resolving the Biafran crisis.

“This position might have informed his appointment after the civil war by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as the Chairman of the Committee on the Reconciliation and Integration of the Igbo back into the Nigerian fold.

“In the military, he distinguished himself. As Governor of the old Western State from August 1966 to April 1971, succeeding the late Gen. Adekunle Fajuyi, Gen. Adebayo contributed immensely to the development of the region.

“He particularly promoted agricultural extension services in the region with the establishment of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Moor Plantation, Ibadan.

“Gen. Adebayo saw himself first and foremost as a Yoruba man before being a Nigerian. His death has further diminished the rank of reputable Yoruba leaders and national icons.”

    Tinubu hails Shettima’s post-insurgency projects

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described as impressive, the comprehensive post-insurgency plans and projects by Borno State Governor. Kashim Shettima.
According to him, the show of consistency, resilience, determination and commitment of providing for the victims of Boko Haram by Shettima is an evidence of a leadership in touch with his people.
Asiwaju Tinubu spoke yesterday at at Benisheik, the headquarters of Kaga Local Government. He was also at Ngamdu town and other project sites during his working visit to Borno State.
He inaugurated some post-insurgency projects initiated and constructed by the Shettima government for the thousands of children rendered orphans and women-turned widows in the last seven years of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Asiwaju Tinubu was accompanied by pioneer APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande and Former Presidential Adviser Malam Kashim Ibrahim Imam, among others.
He was delighted with the volume of projects. He praised the governor for identifying him as one of the people to inaugurate the projects, particularly, the women and girl-child projects and programmes with direct bearing on the orphans and widows.
The former Lagos State governor said: “Only a humanitarian person, God-fearing, committed, honest and transparent leader can go the extra miles to carry out such gigantic projects at this critical period despite the security challenges in this state.
“The concern and efforts of the governor for his people are rare qualities that only a few leaders can have at this time of economic recession ”.

  • Tinubu: I’m not getting set to run for president

Tinubu: I’m not getting set to run for president

I stand behind Buhari in confidence, says APC stalwart

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will never stand in any contest against President Muhammadu Buhari or support anyone against him, his Media Office said yesterday.
Tinubu pledged his continued loyalty to the president and the APC in a statement to debunk Thisday’s story published yesterday.
The statement titled: “Response to Thisday false news report” added that the former Lagos State governor was neither planning a team nor holding consultations with the intention of planning any presidential campaign.
It also said Tinubu would never join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any mega party, having laboured hard to bring the APC to life and power.
The statement said: “The front page story of the February 28 Thisday newspaper alleging that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is actively planning a presidential run is an example of bad fiction masquerading as professional journalism.
“The story is a manufactured tale weaved by its authors to try to create division where there is none.
“Those who wrote this fantasy seek to place Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with President Buhari. Writing such a baseless report is a very foul and wrong thing to do.
“The story carried the headline ‘Tinubu Prepares for Presidential Run, Dumps PDP, Mega Party Alliance’. The headline is remarkable in the fact that every bit of it is utterly wrong.
“First, Asiwaju Tinubu is not gearing up for a presidential run. So there will not be any doubt about this core matter; we shall state Tinubu’s position clearly and unequivocally so that even Thisday reporters cannot misinterpret his position.
“As long as that patriotic and committed man named Muhammadu Buhari holds and seeks to hold the mantle as our president, then Asiwaju Tinubu stands behind him in unwavering support and confidence.
“Asiwaju Tinubu remains faithful to the mission of progressive reform and change that President Buhari, he and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have started.
“Tinubu was instrumental in the formation and success of the APC. His toil and efforts helped establish this government.  He is not one to tear down something he laboured so dutifully to build.
“Instead of trying to convey the truth, the THISDAY report opted to gain false sensation by completely mocking the tenor of the brief banter Asiwaju Tinubu had with journalists at the inauguration of Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. When asked about future political office, Asiwaju said he could not discount that possibility if the nation called upon him for such service, provided, he emphasised, that all political conditions were appropriate; particularly the office in question would have to be vacant, even if it’s local government chairmanship. In our political lexicon, this means the office is not held by a member of the APC in good standing.  We all know this.
“Moreover, if you really listen to his words, Asiwaju did not mention any office or any time-frame.  The conditions he mentioned may not become ripe for years to come and they might not pertain to the presidency. In effect, all Asiwaju said was the position that any political figure would hold.
“As a politician, he cannot preclude the possibility of running for office in the future because no man knows what the future will hold. To translate this general statement of political reality into a tale that he is actively preparing for a 2019 presidential run is reckless in the extreme.
“For that newspaper’s reporters to have engaged in this great leap of counterfeit logic means they purposefully bowed to the pressure to create false headlines instead of following the ethics of their craft to follow the truth even if the truth is more pedestrian and less volatile than what the reporters would have liked to hear. “They have turned themselves into newsmakers instead of remaining true to their calling of being neutral conveyors of events.
“Asiwaju Tinubu has not held any planning meetings for any such presidential campaign and is not contemplating any such meetings. He has no present list of possible running mates because he has no present intention of running.
“The headline also libels Asiwaju by asserting he was going to join the PDP.  This is as shameless as a lie can be. Asiwaju is acknowledged to be the intellectual father and the driving force behind the APC.
“It makes no sense that he would abandon the party that he worked hard to build in order to enter the dilapidated building the PDP has become. Asiwaju worked for over 16 years to break the PDP yoke on the nation.
“After breaking that yoke, it is not in his nature to voluntarily place it back on our necks. Anyone who has followed his career, even his staunchest critics, knows Asiwaju for his partisan consistency. He is not a party hopper. He is loyal and sticks with the party to which he belongs.
“After fighting for so many years to elevate his party to the position of national leadership, he would not give that away in order to join with those who blame him for their currently bleak political circumstance.
“We understand all too well the genesis of this false news report. For their own reasons, THISDAY has joined with those who seek to put Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with our President.
“This scam will fail. Asiwaju supports and stands behind   President Buhari. He wishes the president well and that he returns soon. Whether the president is here or away, he has the full loyalty of Asiwaju Tinubu.
“President Buhari can rest assured on this point: Asiwaju Tinubu will never contest against him nor will he support anyone who does.”

  • Monarch lauds Tinubu, seeks Ambode’s assistance for community

A monarch, the Jagunmolu of Somolu-Bariga, Oba Gbolahan Timson,  has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart  and former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu as a national asset, who has made invaluable contributions to the growth of democracy.

He prased the eminent politician for laying a solid foundation for the prosperity of Lagos State.

Oba Timson said Asiwaju Tinubu discovered Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), adding that they are adding value to public administration.

He said:“Asiwaju is a brilliant politician. He laid the foundation for the new democracy. He is intelligent. We should always pray for him. When he brought the ex-governor and Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, he saw some talents in him.

“Politicians who were not happy for not picking one of them eventually agreed that Tinubu presented a good material.  We thought we had seen the best and Ambode came on board and surpassed that record in less than two years.”

Oba Timson, who is yet to be recognised as a monarch by the government, urged the state government to give an official recognition to him as the traditional ruler of Shomolu/Bariga.

The monarch spoke with reporters in Lagos on plans by some foreign investors to establish solar power plants, which will generate 100 mega watts of electricity for the people of Lagos without financial input from the government.

Oba Timson said: “Some foreign investors met me recently. They want to establish power plants in Lagos. All they need is just two and half hectares of land where they can put up their equipment without any financial input from the state government while Lagosians will only pay for service rendered.

“We are using this forum to appeal to Governor Ambode to give us approval since the project will further enhance stable electricity in the metropolis, even with  plans by the state government to add another 300 mega watts to the national grid.

  • Tinubu, Akande’s visit: The power in pictures

Tinubu, Akande’s visit: The power in pictures

With the release of the photographs taken last Thursday when the All Progressives Congress national chieftains, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande, visited President Muhammadu Buhari in London, two things are now clearer about the president’s present health situation.

The first is the president is not dead as speculated and promoted in some quarters. President Buhari may be ailing but he is not dead. The other is the president is in a residence in London, where his health is perhaps being attended to, not confined to a bed in a hospital as some would want to have us believe. President Buhari received Asiwaju Tinubu and Baba Akande in the Federal Government’s official residence in London, called Abuja House. Not in a hospital. Information Minister Lai Mohammed had told the nation the president is not nursing a life-threatening ailment and not in a hospital. Despite all the verbal attacks on his person for mounting a bulwark for Aso Rock, it seems the minister knows more than we thought he knew after all.

The shots were taken as Tinubu and Akande were received by Buhari in the living room, when they launched into a discussion with the president and when, as a mark of respect, he saw his guests off to the door. It is puzzling, therefore, that even after the release of the photographs, some have continued to live in disbelief and denial. The rumour mill has been agog with all kinds of speculations and innuendoes and conspiracy theories. I don’t need to dignify them by recounting all that here.

But real pictures don’t lie. It is dismaying, however, that some still doubt or disbelieve what they see in pictures? Why do some still live in denial, even after being confronted with live pictures?  Let me hazard two guesses for this. One, having experienced something like this before, perhaps some Nigerians now, understandably, get skeptical when it comes to issues relating to their president’s health. Remember the case of late President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua. The information about the real health status of President Yar’ Adua was hidden for so long. Nigerians were kept in the dark until it engendered a big crisis.

Two, you may say the way and manner the presidency has handled the present situation has not helped matters by not saying it all and you may be right. This may birth suspicions and engender speculations. But President Buhari told the nation he would use the opportunity of his vacation to undergo a check-up. Some other people will, however, choose to believe what they want even when confronted with facts.

Like every other mortal, the president may fall sick at some point or another.

For the life of me, is it out of place to expect a 74-year-old to have some health challenges? So what’s the big deal about the president falling ill?

I’m not saying here that the president is at present enjoying the best of health. But why do we continue to distrust information around our leaders, particularly when they concern their health, even when we are presented with pictorial evidence to suggest that the situation may not be as bad as some would want us to believe?

Now, back to the photographs in question, the persuasive force is not only in the pictures themselves, it is also in the people in the pictures. I mean the efficacy of the message is not borne by just the pictures. It is strengthened, in my view, by those captured by the camera, the political enigmas therein. This point becomes more salient when you recall that some others had visited Buhari before and the pictures rolled out with little effect. Within seconds of the release of Thursday’s pictures, they had become national and international headlines. They went wild on online platforms and social media. The major newspapers in Nigeria slammed them on their front pages the next day.

Indeed, I cannot agree more with Amit Kalantri, who posited in his book “Wealth of Words,” that “a photograph should not just be a picture; it should be a philosophy”. What is the spirit behind the visit to Buhari and the pictures taken? In my view, it is to send a message to the whole world that though President Buhari may be ailing, his is not a bad case. Those photographs are not just pictures, they have meanings; they convey messages of truth, messages of hope. But I also know that, as pictures, they will conjure memories in the future. They will conjure memories of this period in our national history.
