Buhari, Tinubu and mega party brouhaha

Former Lagos State governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has suddenly become the main issue in Nigeria’s politics. No issue seems complete until his name and stance, real or imagined, have been dropped into the mix.  He has become the Obafemi Awolowo of our time, apologies to former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, who once described the late sage as the main issue in Nigerian politics. To be sure, the late Chief Awolowo and Asiwaju Tinubu share many things in common. Like Awolowo, Tinubu subscribes to those noble ideals of progressive politics, such as entrenchment of rule of law in the land, representative democracy, fiscal federalism, social welfare policies and perhaps proper restructuring of the country.

Like Awolowo who believed in the cause of the Yoruba and fought for the emancipation of that race in national politics, Tinubu is also no less a believer in Yoruba nationalism. Along with some of his associates, the late sage formed political parties to advance the fortunes of the Yoruba in national politics. He did not stop there. Whether in the First or Second Republics, the late Awo also moved to replicate the widely-applauded cardinal programmes of his political parties in the West at the national level by seeking to be Nigeria’s president. Believe it or not, Asiwaju Tinubu is a progressive politician to the core. He ranks among the leading lights in the tribe of progressive-minded politicians in the country at present.

Whether in the defunct Social Democratic Party from 1991 to around 1993, in the Alliance for Democracy from 1999 till around 2006, the two political parties he belonged to then; or in the Action Congress of Nigeria, which he formed along with his associates around 2007 or the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria, whose formation he spearheaded in 2015, truth is Tinubu’s political parties have always been progressive at heart. Awolowo was betrayed and denied by some of his associates, but he triumphed over them in life and in death. Tinubu is also being pilloried and betrayed by some of his associates. He will also triumph.

Perhaps, that’s where the similarities between Awolowo and Tinubu end. It is common knowledge that Awolowo struggled to be president, but that ambition was beyond his reach. Tinubu is yet to indicate any interest in Nigeria’s presidency. It would seem that he loves to operate in the background, to play the kingmaker of sort. And when you are ordained to play that kind of role, it is bound to elicit all kinds of attacks and envy from many quarters – friends and foes alike – some of whom would want to be like him. Some would deliberately stoke the political fire to draw out the kingmaker, unearth his next political move and gauge his stand on issues or development perhaps to get their bearing or direction or to plan further hatchet work.

This leads me to recent reports, which tended to make wide assumptions and speculations on the relationship among President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu and APC. Two of these reports are particularly instructive here. The first one, published by a national newspaper on December 3, 2016, with a sprinkling of the report in some online platforms, gave the impression that some APC leaders were yet to agree on how to handle Asiwaju Tinubu’s “alleged role” in the just-ended Ondo State election. The other one published by one or two newspapers also gave the impression that the former Lagos governor, along with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a few PDP stalwarts were planning to form a new party to confront the governing APC in 2019. They insinuated that Tinubu was planning to exit the party and join the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of PDP to form a new mega party.

Taken together, the two reports are mutually contradictory. This is how. Tinubu, as alleged in one report, was going to be sanctioned by APC for his alleged role, whatever that is, in the Ondo election. In another report, the same Tinubu is considered a strong factor enough to be allegedly planning to exit APC and form a new party they described as a Third Force. One presented Tinubu as a political actor to be disciplined, sanctioned or dispensed with as it were for an alleged infraction. The other presented him as formidable enough to want to form a party to confront the same APC he helped to found.

But the good thing is the reports have been put down for what they are: mere speculations and rumours.  Indeed, those who should know have already spoken out. President Buhari dismissed reports that he and the APC leadership were in dispute with Tinubu, describing them as unfounded and mischievous. He described the APC national leader as a priceless asset to APC.  Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, President Buhari said he was highly embarrassed by such suggestions, explaining that he was in regular contact with Tinubu (who was abroad then) before, during and after the Ondo gubernatorial election. According to the statement, “Any suggestions that the president and the party machinery were working to destroy Tinubu have no foundation in truth or any credibility… the president was impressed by Tinubu’s assurance not to work against the party in Ondo and he honoured his words.

“President Buhari regards Tinubu as a priceless political asset to the party whose immeasurable contributions to the development and progress of the ruling party are known to all. Rumor mongers should stop spreading the seeds of discord and animosity between the president and Tinubu or the party. The president is proud of Jagaban and his pivotal role in the party and the movement. President Buhari commended Tinubu’s spirit of comradeship in promptly congratulating Rotimi Akeredolu who was elected governor. The president also noted that at a time his administration is preoccupied with governance issues, rumours of divisions and alleged scheming within the party are counterproductive to internal unity and cohesion in APC.”

Meanwhile, Asiwaju Tinubu himself had also laid to rest speculations that he was leaving the APC to form a so-called mega party. He said in a series of coordinated tweets that he would not engage in “destructive pettiness”.  He said: “In our journey to national betterment, plans and policies will be made, then amended. Mistakes will occur and corrected. Through it all, I, Asiwaju, will remain true to the progressive ideals that fuelled the creation of APC. I have devoted my political life to achieve what has been achieved. My heart is too much of the people, and my mind too fixed on establishing positive historic legacy…rather than engage in destructive pettiness. This government, APC, is for the betterment of the people and the national purpose is bigger and more important than any individual’s desires.”

Needless to add that the Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, had also denied reports that the Ahmed Makarfi camp was in talks with Tinubu and Atiku to form a mega party. He said in a statement in Abuja that the party had never contemplated partnership with Tinubu and other APC chieftains with the purpose of forming another political party. Jibrin said: “I salute Tinubu’s courage for coming out to speak frankly about his position regarding this unfounded rumour and for setting the record straight. In Tinubu’s reaction denouncing the report, he criticised the PDP and I can’t understand why anybody would think that we are going to form a new party with somebody who is condemning us. The PDP is a golden name, a party formed by respectable and dignified Nigerians like Alex Ekwueme, Jerry Gana, Solomon Lar, Adamu Ciroma, Aminu Wali, Sule Lamido and many others.”

Is there any need to add any more to demonstrate that there is no iota of doubt in the fact that Asiwaju Tinubu remains committed to APC and the ideals that birthed the party?

    •APC stalwart greets Muslims

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has called for a final push against Boko Haram members to bring their dastardly acts against innocent lives to an end.
He spoke yesterday in a statement felicitating with Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-el-Maulud Festival, birth of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
He urged the Muslim faithful to imbibe the virtues of Prophet Muhammed, which include love, peaceful coexistence and sacrifice and to support President Muhammadu Buhari as he tackles the nation’s problems, particularly the challenges posed by the economic recession.
Praying for the souls of the victims of the suicide bombings in Madagali, Adamawa State and Maiduguri Monday Market in Borno State, Tinubu said it was regrettable and hurtful to see hundreds of lives lost needlessly.
The statement reads: “I felicitate with Muslim faithful in the country on this occasion of Eid-el-Maulud Festival (Birth of Prophet Muhammed) (PBUH). I urge them to imbibe the virtues of Prophet Muhammed, among them love, peaceful co-existence and sacrifice, and to exhibit those attributes as we relate with one another.
“Let us also use the occasion to pray for the country and for President Muhammadu Buhari as he boldly confronts the challenges facing the country. The government needs our support, understanding and indeed sacrifice to end the present economic recession. Surely, there would be light at the end of the tunnel.
“I enjoin Muslims, indeed all Nigerians to be on the alert: pay particular attention to their security by being mindful of movements around them, being watchful of their surroundings and neighbours, by cooperating with and giving security men information when they suspect untoward developments.
“Boko Haram terrorists will be defeated as they engage in the antics of a drowning man. I salute and encourage our men and women in uniform not to relent. Nigerians are proud of their exploits.
“As we pray for the country and our troops for Boko Haram to come to an end, I call on our Muslim brothers and sisters across the country to also endeavour to get involved in providing support for the physically- displaced persons in the Northeast. This war will and must come to an end.
“I seek prayers for the souls of victims of the suicide bombings in Madagali, Adamawa State and Maiduguri Monday Market in Borno State. It is regrettable and hurtful to see hundreds of lives lost needlessly. These dastardly acts against innocent lives must be condemned and those behind it brought to justice. That is what we all should be about and united over – bringing these attacks to an end. On this, I stand united with President Buhari in his concerted effort to restore security to the Northeast and other parts of Nigeria.
“I wish all Muslim faithful happy Eid-el-Maulud celebration.”

  • Tinubu: A phat phenomenon

At the turn of specific seasons of life; and in set times buried in the exclusive knowledge of Divinity, humanity experiences the birthing of some special breed of beings who have been marked to carry out specific assignments on behalf of specific territories and nations. Nigeria once had those beings. Many of them are late; but they are men Nigerians still celebrate up till today for what they dropped behind in vestiges from their strides.

In the southwest was Obafemi Awolowo, erudite and visionary who carried his people and their well-beings on his bruised and battered back for a very long time. Nnamdi Azikiwe was an admirable tower of sagacity from the Eastern part of the country. He markedly presided over an evolving Nigeria and depart a celebrity.  Ahmadu Bello Sardauna of Sokoto was an enigma in the North. He also pulled his weight with fortitude and strength among his people and in Nigeria. These men and many others including women emboldened their footprints on the interlock of Nigeria’s history. They raised disciples who, in turn raised other disciples who thereon and till now are attempting to raise others in a combined effort to make Nigeria great and wholesome.

I have never met Bola Ahmed Tinubu; one-time political activist; one-time Lagos State governor, one-time senator, a bawling voice in the wilderness of Nigerian politics, and a phat phenomenon. I saw him for the first time at Osun Stadium during the inauguration of Rauf Aregbesola as second-term Governor 2014. I purposely and transfixingly gazed at this man for a long time to determine if God would reveal to me why he is deemed such a terrific titanic to many. I saw an ordinary man donned in regular Guinea Brocade. A man just like you and I; but a being with a different swing in a realm unspeakable; moving, shaking, and shaping men, politics, policies and polity in Nigeria.

Those who love Tinubu are very many; and those who despise him are not few either.  I have stumbled on a few people in politics and business who believe their lives wouldn’t have had meanings if their paths never crossed Tinubu’s. I have also parleyed with some who loathe him and wish he were not in the big picture of Nigerian politics. The latter category of people will allege that Tinubu has made a mess of their political lives; but the number of his hardened admirers grows hourly for many reasons. Someone once affirmed that if a man wants to get ahead in the cruddy game of Nigerian politics; after talking to God, you must talk to Tinubu. He is the Jagaban of Borgu; and he is not a phantom phenomenon. He is phat!

Before Bukola Saraki pulled a fast one on his party last year to become the Senate President, he had to launch an underground campaign against Tinubu first. Oh, boy, was that not a good soundtrack in the ears of Tinubu-haters? “Tinubu wants to control all of us, let’s tell him that won’t happen”; that was the mantra of Saraki’s hugger-mugger campaign. In the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara had to read off the same script to become Speaker. Dogara painted Tinubu as a bad boy control-freak first before he rode on to power. Dino Melaye once accused Tinubu as the brain behind his political travails, and those who were standing behind Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President also claimed that Jagaban was the source of their tribulations.

For men’s marital and business woes; they have blamed Tinubu and it sold like hot cakes in the market of ignorance and benightedness. Is Tinubu God? God is not a man! And Tinubu has never called himself such. But his traducers will tell you he acts like the Holy One. But he is a man on a special spiritual assignment, and he doesn’t have to dream dreams and see visions to play that role. Tinubu is not just a whiff and a whale; he is a colossus and a cyclopean phenomenon in Nigerian politics!

Men who choose to fight Tinubu do so dirty; and the field of the fight he now fights has grown wider since he stood behind Muhammadu Buhari in the last Presidential election and triumphed. Buhari was not particularly a thriller as candidate. If Nigerians were voting charisma, charm and pizzazz in the election; Buhari will still be in the ‘other room’ beholding his beautiful wife’s face. If we were voting soothing, mesmerizing speech machinist, the General will still be in his Daura farmland feeding and milking his 100 cows.  But Buhari stands tall as a man of character and modesty who goes not after filthy lucre, gluttony, graft, or maddening amassing of wealth. Tinubu went into the rubbles of Daura and cleaned up the garments of this man who was once called an election serial-loser; built a bullish team coated with savvy salvaging spices around him, and marketed him to the same clientele that had three times in a row rejected the product.  He who was once called a serial-loser is now President over 180 million people and the Giant of Africa because of Tinubu.

Tinubu saw virtues in the President and decided to stand behind him while he convinced all of the Southwest and more to stand behind the APC candidate.  The desire to change Nigeria came in a head-on collision with guts, and there was the birthing of a cohesive, unstoppable rainbow coalition that uploaded millions of brooms at the polls for a clean sweep.Tinubu is a discoverer of talents and a potter who moulds men of skills. He is a man on assignment, and wise men should reverence men behind special assignments. Chief Ebenezer Babatope, a PDP Chieftain from my backyard in Ijeshaland once said this about Tinubu in an interview: “…Though we belong to different parties but you underrate Tinubu at your peril…he is a master strategist”.

A ravishing master-strategist like none other he is. Don’t regard his sporadic slip in politics as a sleep. It is a strategy.  Men on assignment are also strategic. Don’t join them in the shallow insinuation that the Ondo election results two weeks ago portend that the man is diminished in status. Thou must be kidding. If Tinubu’s opponents want to build their strategies around that thought process, they do so at their paralyzing peril and crippling pitfall. In 2003, Tinubu was declared politically dead. The PDP election speed-train swept through the entire Southwest bypassing Lagos State. It’s tough to access Tinubu’s territory without his peoples’ permission. After the PDP sweep, we remember the aftermath a few years later. PDP was chased out in a cross-region shellacking that enthroned AC and ACN. Tinubu made it happen.

Until Divinity declares Tinubu’s assignment over; it’s not a decree that man can re-write. The jostling has begun now for 2018 and 2019. The political fiesta will kick off in Osun State where several men will be struggling to succeed a financially challenged but outstanding, mega-achiever, revolutionary Governor Rauf Aregbesola. Whether you agree with me or not; Tinubu will be a major player in who becomes what in that territory. Some call it imposition, but I call it competition. Politics is competition; and a phat phenomenon like Tinubu knows what competition is all about. Don’t mess with a man who has these manners of virtues on his CV. They are men I like to meet and shake their hands.

How investment in agric can end recession, by Senator Tinubu

THE Senator representing Lagos Central, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has said investment in food and agriculture will end recession.

She emphasised the need to invest in man-power through support for small-holder women farmers.

Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu spoke yesterday at a National Policy Dialogue on Hunger Eradication and Sustainable Development Goals organised by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) in Abuja.

She said the move would help achieve food security and poverty eradication in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs goals, among others, urged nations to reduce poverty, achieve gender equality as well as women and girls empowerment.

Mrs. Tinubu, who is the Senate Chairman on Environment, spoke on the theme: “Roadmap to an inclusive policy option for female smallholder farmers in Nigeria’s agricultural sector”.

She said a vast number of Nigerian farmers, “especially in the rural areas are women, whose productivities are often restricted due to cultural norm and values”.

The senator said: “Overall, women’s access to land is restricted, owing to the fact that our society is patriarchal and in certain cases prohibits women from owning landed property. This has a direct effect on poverty rates.

“We cannot talk about empowering our citizens to undertake agricultural work without stressing the role that women play in food production and processing.

“A good number of Nigerian farmers, particularly those in the rural communities are women. The number could be higher and output better with increased access to credit and training facilities.

“As a nation, we must invest in food production. We must also invest in man-power to get maximum results. A Nigeria with more farmers like

Susan Godwin producing to their maximum potential is one in which we will have food security and be able to eradicate poverty.”

She expressed the Senate’s commitment to ending hunger, poverty and ensuring better welfare for women farmers.

“We must ensure all inclusive policies to ensure participation of various interests in our economy. It is however apparent that gender bias occurs in several other aspects of our lives and I am committed to doing my best to ensure that women get opportunities they deserve,” she added.

  • I won’t quit APC, says Tinubu

•‘I’ll remain true to progressive ideals’

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said he would not quit the party, warning that any indulgence in destructive politics is counter-productive.
He said having laboured along with like-minded patriots to build the national party, he would not abandon the platform because its formation was informed by progressive ideals.
The former Lagos State governor reflected on the ruling party in the wake of unfounded speculations by “fifth columnists” that he had opened talks with opposition elements on establishing a formidable platform to battle for power against the APC in the 2019 elections.
There have been media reports about the prospects of a new party in the first quarter of next year, following the re-alignment of forces.
According to the speculation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction, led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, had been reaching out to prominent APC chieftains, including Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko and his Kano State counterpart, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso, to concretise the plan for an alternative broad-based party.
But, in his tweets yesterday, the former Lagos governor dismissed the reports as fabrication, saying that he would not “engage in destructive pettiness.”
Tinubu said: “This is a party I laboured with others to build. We would not abandon it for another. Millions of Nigerians who voted are watching and praying.”
The frontline politician acknowledged that in the collective progressive thirst for a better Nigeria, the journey may be laced with many obstacles, mistakes and inevitable challenges that must be tackled to get to the promised land.
Tinubu stressed: “In our Journey to national betterment, plans and policies will be made, then amended. Mistakes will occur and then corrected. Achievements will be recorded and replicated. Through it all, I, Asiwaju will remain true to the progressive ideals that fuelled the creation of APC.”
The Third Republic senator said the onus was on him as one of the APC founding fathers to strive at erecting lasting legacies, instead of regressing to destructive tactics.
He also vowed to elevate national interest above individual interest, pointing out that the APC was established to defend a national purpose and better the lot of Nigerians.
Tinubu said: “”I have devoted my political life to achieve what has been achieved. My heart is too much of the people and my mind too fixed on establishing positive historic legacy… rather than engage in destructive pettiness.
“This government of APC is for the betterment of the people and the national purpose is bigger and more important than any individual’s desires.”
