EPL: Tottenham return to top four after N’Forest victory

Tottenham returned to the Premier League‘s top four for the first time since February by beating Nottingham Forest.

The hosts opened the scoring inside 15 minutes when Forest defender Murillo diverted Timo Werner’s cross into his own net.

Forest levelled 12 minutes later through Chris Wood, who finished off Anthony Elanga’s cross.

But centre-back Micky van de Ven restored Tottenham’s lead in the 52nd minute with a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty area that found the top corner.

And six minutes later, Pedro Porro netted a third for Spurs, hammering in James Maddison’s pass across goal.

Victory meant Tottenham moved above Aston Villa on goal difference, having played one game fewer.

Nottingham Forest stayed 17th, only outside of the drop zone thanks to their superior goal difference over Luton.

Son Heung-min scored a late winner as Tottenham recovered from a goal down to beat Luton and keep the pressure on Aston Villa in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Son collected half-time substitute Brennan Johnson’s clever pass before beating Hatters goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski with a low shot, which took a deflection off Daiki Hashioka on its way in.

Tahith Chong’s well-worked goal had given the Hatters an early lead, but Spurs responded well and equalised early in the second half when Johnson’s cross was turned into his own net by Issa Kabore.

Poyet tips Tottenham for trophy glories

Former Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet, who was a coach the last time the club won silverware, told Sky Sports why they are on the right track to winning another trophy.

Poyet played for Tottenham from 2001 to 2004 before returning to White Hart Lane under Juande Ramos, who led the club to the Carabao Cup in 2008 – still the most recent trophy the club has lifted, more than 16 years ago.

Spurs endured early exits from both the Carabao and FA Cups this season, but have their Champions League hopes in their own hands after thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park on Sunday. They can jump up into fourth spot, for 24 hours at least, when they take on Fulham in a  Premier League today.

The job Ange Postecoglou has done since inheriting a miserable situation in north London last year following the bad-tempered exit of Antonio Conte has impressed Poyet, who thinks his former side are on the right path to bringing the good times back to the club.

“I’ve got plenty of friends who are Spurs fans, and they’re delighted,” he told Sky Sports. “It was a massive change, and they’re really enjoying watching the team now. They know they are going to go for it in any game, in any competition. If they keep getting better there is only one way, which is up.

“The first season has been outstanding for Postecoglou, and next year the fans are going to ask for something more. That’s how it works! Can Tottenham win a trophy, or something they have been after for a long time? It’s a good start, it’s a good atmosphere at the club at the moment and everyone is enjoying watching the team at this time.

“Some people say, ‘oh, maybe next year?’. When you start with that, then 15 or 16 years go past and you don’t win. Without any doubt, it will be easier with the way the team is playing right now. They are an attacking, offensive team, and they will be closer to winning trophies.

“Unfortunately, 15 years ago or so it became more important to qualify for the Champions League than win trophies. That’s just financial. On the other side are the fans and players. The fans want players, and the players are not winners until they have won something.”

EPL: Tottenham beat Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park

Tottenham boosted their hopes of a top-four Premier League finish with an emphatic victory over 10-man Aston Villa at Villa Park.

In an encounter billed as pivotal in the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League, early second-half goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson set Spurs on their way.

And a seemingly leg-weary Villa side, who played at Ajax on Thursday evening, rarely looked capable of clawing their way back into the contest once captain John McGinn was dismissed for a reckless tackle on visiting left-back Destiny Udogie in the 65th minute.

With Spurs in complete control in the closing stages, stoppage-time goals from Son Heung-min and Timo Werner only served to rub salt into Villa’s wounds.

The hosts remain fourth in the table but are now only two points above Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, who have a game in hand.

An underwhelming first period had seen the teams cancel each other out with Johnson’s low attempted cross from the left, which was easily gathered by home goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, the closest thing to resembling a shot on target.

However, Pape Matar Sarr’s superb cross from the right saw Maddison prod in shortly after the break and when home defender Ezri Konsa carelessly gave possession away deep in his own half, Johnson collected Son’s pass to double Tottenham’s lead.

With the home stands already emptying early into 10 added minutes, South Korea forward Son swept home his 159th goal for the north London club and provided Werner’s opportunity, with the German’s placed close-range shot finding the right corner.

EPL: Tottenham hit back late on to beat Crystal Palace 3-1

Tottenham boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League by staging a dramatic late comeback to beat Crystal Palace.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were heading for back-to-back defeats after Eberechi Eze’s opener until two goals in three second-half minutes turned the game around.

Timo Werner scored his first goal for the club by converting Brennan Johnson’s cross in the 78th minute before Cristian Romero headed in James Maddison’s cross in the 80th.

Captain Son Heung-min swept home a minute from time to seal the three points, moving his side to within two points of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Werner had failed to convert when played clean through in a forgettable first half in which the hosts failed to break down Palace’s stubborn defence.

Eze’s sweetly struck free-kick put the visitors ahead in the 59th minute and there were grumbles from the home fans as chances were missed early in the second.

But, to their credit, Spurs stuck to their task to inflict a first defeat on Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

Villa can regain their five-point cushion with victory in the late kick-off – a visit to Luton Town.

EPL: Joao Gomes scores twice as Wolves beat Tottenham 2-1

Joao Gomes scored twice as Wolves gained an excellent win at Tottenham – a result that saw Spurs drop out of the top four in the Premier League.

The visitors went ahead just before half-time when Gomes was left unmarked eight yards out and rose well to powerfully head home Pablo Sarabia’s right-wing corner.

But Tottenham made it 1-1 after only 34 seconds of the second half.

Wolves failed to clear a Spurs throw-in and Dejan Kulusevski ran past Craig Dawson and prodded the ball through Jose Sa’s legs.

Tottenham had fought back after conceding the first goal to beat Brentford and Brighton in their past two home games and Kulusevski had two chances to put the hosts in front this time.

However, Sa made an excellent save low down to his left and Nelson Semedo blocked a goalbound effort to keep it level.

Those squandered chances proved significant as Wolves sprang a quick counter-attack with Pedro Neto pulling the ball back for Gomes to side-foot home what proved to be the winning goal.

Spurs began the day in fourth place, but Aston Villa’s 2-1 win at Fulham saw them move above Ange Postecoglou’s side.

EPL: Son’s hattrick inspires Tottenham against Burnley

Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick as Tottenham recovered from a goal down to thrash Burnley at Turf Moor and continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Lyle Foster finished a lovely, flowing move to give the Clarets an early lead, but Son’s delicate finish restored parity 12 minutes later and the visitors never looked back.

They dominated the rest of the half and Cristian Romero’s curling effort from the edge of the box completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time.

James Maddison continued his fine start to the campaign with a peach of a goal nine minutes into the second half, the former Leicester man curling beyond James Trafford after Burnley had gifted the visitors possession inside their own half.

Spurs, who were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Fulham on Tuesday, move to ten points from their opening four games, while Burnley remain without a point this season.

  • Moussa  Sissoko signs new Spurs  contract till 2023

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko has signed a new contract with the club until 2023.

The Frenchman arrived in north London in the summer of 2016 and has developed into a key player under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 30-year-old played a decisive role in Spurs reaching the Champions League final last season and insists he is ready to take the next step and deliver silverware.

“I’m very proud. At the beginning it was tough, but I never gave up and today everything has changed.”

Sissoko has played 132 times for Spurs in all and has started all six of their Premier League matches so far this season.

Sissoko said: ‘I’m very proud to sign a new deal with the club – that means the club believes in me and they’re happy with what I’m doing, so hopefully I can give my best to the club for a long time and hopefully we can get some trophies all together.’

The midfielder says he feels like a leader in Pochettino’s team as he embarks on his fourth season with the north London club.

He said: ‘I try to be [a leader]. I have a lot of experience, I’m now 30 years old.

‘If I can help new signings and even some players who have been at the club a long time, I’m trying to do it.

‘It will be helpful for everyone. If I can give them some advice it will be no problem with me. I was young as well so I had advice from other players.

‘It is always important to have something from the experienced players, so that is what I’m trying to do.’

  • VAR erases Ndidi, Serge Aurier goals in Leicester’s 2-1 win

Business minded Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi shot his Leicester City side into the lead in the 26th minute against Spurs on Saturday but had the goal cancelled by VAR.

The Video Assistant Referee had ruled that the Nigerian international was off side and as such the goal could not hold.  Ndidi was however not the only one that jubilated first for scoring  and disappointed  later as Tottenham’s Serge Aurier equally suffered the same fate in the 67th minute when he grabbed what should have been the visitors second goal after red hot Harry Kane had scored  the first  in the 29th minute .

Gingered by Kane’s goal Spurs maintained a very strong momentum and looked like they were bent on running away with an away victory.

Serge Aurier celebrates before his goal was cancelled by VAR

Ricardo Pereira however leveled up for Leicester City in the 69th minute just two minutes after Serge Aurier’s goal was annulled by the VAR.

A rejuvenated Leicester City then consolidated with James Maddison getting a second goal in the 85th minute and the Foxes put up a good show to maintain the lead to the end of the match.

The victory of course gave Ndidi who was as usual in action for the entire duration of the match something to take home.

Compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho was however not listed and will be hoping to have an opportunity in Leicester next match when they take on Luton Town in the League Cup on Tuesday at the Kenilworth Road.
