Harry Kane to miss Old Trafford Clash

Harry Kane is out of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League game at Manchester United on Saturday. The striker, who has scored 17 goals in his past 13 matches for Tottenham and England, has not recovered from the hamstring injury that he suffered in the home win over Liverpool last Sunday.

The club described it as a “minor strain to the left hamstring” but it is serious enough to have ruled him out of the game between the teams second and third in the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino said it was not worth taking the risk, particularly as his team have a Champions League tie against Real Madrid at Wembley next Wednesday. He hoped that Kane could be fit for then.

“For tomorrow, we cannot take a risk,” the manager said. “It’s a minor injury, very small, but we cannot take a risk. We’ll see after for Wednesday against Real Madrid. Tomorrow, it’s impossible.

“It is a blow? Yes. You always want all the players available. It’s a problem. We want them available to play. We always believe in the collective, the squad. During the season, problems happen and you must trust all the players, all the squad. I’ve told you the players are not machines and it’s so difficult to cope with international duty, playing every three days. It’s lucky it’s not a big problem but he’s not going to play tomorrow.”

Pochettino was asked whether Kane had demanded to play at Old Trafford. “No, no,” Pochettino said. “It’s a decision from the doctor and medical staff not to take a risk. It’s no sense to take a risk when the problem is small and we can fix it in a few days, probably.”

West Ham Clash: Pochettino banks on dinner effect

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino is hoping that his £10k special dinner with the squad will have a multiply effect on Saturday when the squad file out against West Ham.

The Spurs boss treated 50 members of his squad and staff to posh West End restaurant The Beast on Wednesday night with each member of the squad at liberty to choose what he wants. The special outing according to Pochettino was to take their minds off the London derby and put them in a more relaxed mood ahead of the clash.

Pochettino also paid for £160-a-bottle Argentine wine at the exclusive eatery – ensuring his players were relaxed ahead of the visit to a ground where their title hopes were incidentally dashed last season.

“We had a dinner in a restaurant in London with all the staff and players that I invited, of course. I paid the bill at the end. It is tactics to take all the staff, players and chairman to a restaurant.

It is so important, just as it is important to work on the pitch,” he enthused

Pochettino is no stranger to team bonding exercises and once even walked over hot coals during his time in charge of Southampton.

Pochettino added: “We always try to find the way to stay together out of the training ground because it is so different; all that happens is so different.

“But it is so difficult because here in England, it’s difficult to find a day or night altogether.

“It’s such a busy schedule that we have, we play every two to three days and then all are away for international break.

Striker Fernando Llorente made his first start for the club 24 hours earlier in the 1-0 EFL Cup win over Barnsley

The Spaniard struggled to impose himself after missing a golden early chance to break his duck.

Pochettino has however urged fans to give him time to settle, adding: “It’s true that Fernando arrived here without pre-season because of a problem in his arm.

“Now he is doing very well. He’s so humble and has won the World Cup, but he needs time to learn the dynamic of the team.”

  • Tottenham makes U-turn in Ross Barkley deal

Tottenham makes U-turn in Ross Barkley deal

Tottenham are cooling their interest in Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

The England international was left behind from Everton’s trip to Tanzania last week with the club citing a groin injury.

The 23-year-old, with one year left on contract, has been keen to resolve his future and has so far failed to agree terms on a new deal at Everton as he looks for over £120,000 a week.

However, despite an expected push from Tottenham in the wake of their £54million Kyle Walker windfall, they are opting against pursuing Barkley at this stage.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown interest in homegrown Barkley and Everton expect offers to come later in the window though they do not intend to let him go cheaply.

Everton’s valuation in an inflated market was £50m and that has deterred suitors so far.

Tottenham have also shelved any plans to move for Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira as they weigh up options to replace Kyle Walker.

Kieran Trippier will carry on as first choice though they continue to assess other players for the position to maintain competition for places.

Tottenham, who also steadfastly maintain Eric Dier will not be sold, have not made an offer to Real Madrid for midfielder Mateo Kovacic despite reports a £25m offer was rejected.

Lennon has returned to training after a difficult spell last season which saw him admitted to hospital when he was detained under the Mental Health Act. The 30-year-old has looked sharp in training and is eager to play.

  • Ugo Ehiogu, former England defender suffered cardiac arrest

Ugo Ehiogu, former England defender suffered cardiac arrest

Former England and Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu on Friday died at the age of 44, after suffering a cardiac arrest at Tottenham’s training centre a day before.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja reports that news of Ehiogu’s dead was confirmed by his former team in a statement.

According to John McDermott, Tottenham’s Head of Coaching and Development, Ehiogu died in hospital in the early hours of Friday.

“Ehiogu, who was Spurs’ Under-23s coach, was capped four times by England. Ehiogu’s immense presence will be irreplaceable.

“Words cannot express the shock and sadness that we all feel at the club,” McDermott added.

NAN reports that Ehiogu made over 200 appearances for Aston Villa between 1991 and 2000 and then spent seven years at Middlesbrough.

He won the League Cup with Villa in 1994 and 1996, and also with Boro in 2004.

The centre-back also played for West Brom, Leeds, Rangers and Sheffield United, before retiring in 2009.

NAN reports that he began coaching at Tottenham in 2014.

Ehiogu was a co-founder of music label Dirty Hit, which has British indie band The 1975 on its books.

He married his wife, Gemma, in 2005 and had two children — son Obi Jackson and daughter Jodie.

Villa will hold a minute’s applause before their Championship match against Birmingham City on Sunday, with both sets of players to wear black armbands.

  • Tottenham win at Burnley to cut Chelsea’s lead

Tottenham Hotspur cut the gap on English Premier League leaders Chelsea to seven points as they overcame a stubborn Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The visitors struggled in a drab first half as Dele Alli fired wide when well-placed and both central midfielders Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks were withdrawn through injury.

Winks suffered a particularly nasty fall, tumbling into the Burnley dugout after trying to tackle Stephen Ward, before he was carried off on a stretcher at the interval.

In spite of a lack of attacking fluency, Spurs continued to exert pressure on the Clarets from corner kicks.

It paid off when Eric Dier fired in after the hosts failed to properly clear Christian Eriksen’s delivery.

Vincent Janssen, making his first Premier League start of 2017, became the third Tottenham player forced off injured but that allowed the introduction of Son Heung-min.

And the Korea striker made sure of victory as he tapped in Alli’s squared pass on 77 minutes as Spurs controlled the final stages.

Victory, coupled with Chelsea’s shock 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, ensures Mauricio Pochettino’s side stay in contention for the title with nine games remaining.

A perennial worry with Tottenham is whether they possess the depth required to match the undoubted quality of their starting side and sustain a season-long challenge.

Victory over Southampton in the absence of injured striker Harry Kane last time out suggested those concerns could be consigned to the past, only to reappear in the first half at Turf Moor.

Kyle Walker’s deputy Kieran Tripper made numerous mistakes several times against his former club, while Winks was guilty of trying to forcing passes in midfield.

Also, Janssen was again ineffective, lacking the pace and guile to test the organised duo of Michael Keane and Ben Mee.

While not in the circumstances Spurs would have wanted, the added quality of Mousa Dembele and especially Son ultimately ensured a more comfortable afternoon.

The Korean’s movement was vital in opening up a tiring Burnley as Alli made amends for his earlier uncharacteristic miss to calmly find the striker free to side-foot in.

After the game, Pochettino said Kane could be back “in a few weeks”.

He added that Son in the meantime could again prove a stellar stand-in, while Janssen’s spell on the sidelines looks set to resume.

In other matches played on Saturday in the EPL, Hull City beat West Ham United 2-1, while Manchester United drew goalless with West Brom.

Leicester also beat Stoke City 2-0, with Watford compounding Sunderland’s woes with a 1-0 defeat.(NAN)

  • Alli bags three match ban for horror tackle

Alli bags three match ban for horror tackle

Dele Alli will miss Tottenham’s next three games in European competition after UEFA ruled on the red card he received during last month’s shock Europa League exit against Gent.

Spurs were 1-0 down from the away leg and their task became steeper at Wembley when England midfielder Alli launched into a dangerous lunge on Brecht Dejaegere before receiving his marching orders.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men could only muster a 2-2 draw and the Premier League’s second-place side will now be without Alli when they make their expected return to Europe next season.

Tottenham lie second in the Premier League, seven points ahead of Manchester United in fifth and well placed in the battle for Champions League qualification.

North London rivals Arsenal are languishing in sixth by contrast and UEFA have fined the club €5,000 after supporters entered the field of play during their 5-1 Champions League last-16 defeat to Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium.

The reigning Bundesliga champions were fined €3,000 for their fans throwing objects during the same match.

  • Kane suffers angle ligament damage

    Kane suffers angle ligament damage

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has suffered ligament damage to his right ankle.

However, the injury is not thought to be as severe as the injury which sidelined him for seven weeks earlier this season.

The England international was replaced after seven minutes of Sunday’s 6-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Millwall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he was hurt when defender Jake Cooper blocked his shot close to the byeline.

Spurs said the injury is similar to the one Kane picked up against Sunderland on Sept. 18.

  • Alli is Premier League player of the month

Alli is Premier League player of the month

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been named Premier League Player of the Month for January after scoring five goals to maintain the Londoners’ title push.

England international Alli beat off competition from team-mate Harry Kane as well as Everton full-back Seamus Coleman, Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson after helping Spurs to three wins and two draws last month.

Alli, whose team are second, nine points behind Chelsea, said: “The team’s done very well this month, not just me individually.”We’ve had lots of players in form so it’s an honour to win it.”

“It’s the first one I’ve won and it’s a real honour. I think the whole team played brilliantly this month.” #COYS

Swansea boss Paul Clement landed the manager gong in his first month in charge at the Liberty Stadium.

After taking over on January 3, with the Swans four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table, Clement halted a run of four straight defeats with nine points from 12 in January, including a memorable 3-2 win at Liverpool.

Swansea are now a point clear of the bottom three although it remains tight at the foot of the table.

12 years after:Tottenham rues missing Moses for free

Victor Moses was being watched by Tottenham and Chelsea scouts before he joined Crystal Palace’s academy on the advice of his former coach – back in 2004.

Now 25-years-old, Moses has made his breakthrough season at Stamford Bridge under new boss Antonio Conte, who has won five of his last league games in charge of the club while utilising the Nigeria international in a wing-back role.

Former Arsenal trainee, Tony Loizi, managed Moses at amateur club Cosmos 90 FC and helped to introduce his former player to the English academy system at Crystal Palace. Loizi remembers that Palace had competiton from other London clubs, including  Spurs and Chelsea.

“So many clubs were after him and then Crystal Palace came in,” Loizi told Goal. “Tottenham in particular were looking at him for a long time, but I’m glad that he chose Palace. If he went to Chelsea or Tottenham, he might not have made it.”

“I said to him: ‘look, Victor, there’s no way I would hold you back’ and I asked him to come to Crystal Palace with me. I went down there after the two-week trial and they were signing the schoolboy contracts.

“Chelsea were also in for him and I said: ‘if you sign for Palace you will get to the first team quicker than at any of the other clubs’, and in the end he chose to stay with them after his trial.”

Moses made his Palace debut at the age of 16 in 2007, less than three years after signing his first contract with the club.
